ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT: The Washington Liaison Office, Division of Information and External Relations (IERD).

ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING: This position is located in the Washington Liaison Office (WLO) of UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund is a strategic Office within the Division of Information and External Relations (IERD). Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Director of the Washington Office, the Advocacy and Communications Specialist reinforces the capacity of the UNFPA WLO to build and enhance relationships between UNFPA and key US stakeholders.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES/EXPECTED RESULTS: 1.

Contribute to the efforts of the WLO to advocate and communicate UNFPA's mission and mandate with key US stakeholders; With the WLO Director, represent UNFPA in Washington, DC based meetings, events and coalitions; Coordinate UNFPA WLO policy/outreach events on Capitol Hill and with other partners including NGOs, think tanks and universities; Support and coordinate logistics for UNFPA senior staff missions to Washington, D.C. including helping to identify and coordinate their participation in high-profile events and meetings;

Develop and maintain contacts with government officials, NGOS, journalists and other key Washington stakeholders and identify targets of opportunity and vehicles to communicate/advocate with these constituencies; Design and maintain outreach list to identify and address key audiences and stakeholders.

Support UNFPA WLO messaging and communication efforts focusing on the US Government and other key constituencies in Washington, D.C.; Provide advice and coordination on effective messaging, position and tactics to reach key Washington constituencies; Assist UNFPA staff at HQ and around the globe with Washington-related inquiries and information; Develop and maintain media contacts and lists; Draft and distribute media advisors, press releases and other materials and design and organize media events, as appropriate, to promote the activities of the UNFPA WLO including supporting annual release of State of World Population Report;

Initiate and maintain UNFPA WLO social media activities including Twitter and FB accounts; Participate in weekly HQ Media and Communication Branch conference call.

Support UNFPA WLO efforts to update HQ and UNFPA Field Offices on US Government policy and programs in areas of interest to UNFPA; Provide analysis and updates on USG activities including annual US budget and appropriations cycles; Review relevant on-line sources for USG activities, events and RFPs with potential synergy for UNFPA; Provide quarterly updates on WLO activities for UNFPA internal publication VOICES. 5.

Performs other job related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Knowledge and Experience:

Advanced University Degree in international relations, public policy, public affairs, law, communications or related field. .

Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience at the national or international level in public relations, communications or advocacy. .

Previous experience with US Government entities is desirable.

* Fluency in English is required. Fluency in at least one other UN working language is an asset but not a requirement.
