Funding Programme of the Flemish Government for traineeships in international organisations Most of the internships with international organizations are unpaid, which poses a major hurdle for young graduates and young professionals. The Flemish government wants to help both the organization and the intern with this subsidy: the grant is intended for candidates who have secured an internship offer from an international organization and are under 35 years at the start of the internship. The candidate is responsible for finding an internship, but we are happy to publish vacant positions on our site. If the incumbent meets all the criteria mentioned below, the applicant may apply for a grant with the Flemish Department of Foreign Affairs, no later than one day before the start of the internship. (date of publication : August 2011) Background: A lot of international organisations offer students or young graduates the opportunity to do an internship within the organisation, but most of these internships are unpaid. Because of the financial burden, a lot of young people in Flanders cannot participate in internship programmes. An internship with an international organisation often is the first step towards a career in the public sector and is mutually beneficial for both the organisation, whose work is supported by a highly motivated young professional, and the intern, who gains important work experience. The subsidies the Flemish Government offers through its programme are intended to help young people in taking the financial hurdle that might keep them from doing an internship with an international organisation. At the same time, the Flemish government wants to facilitate the spread of Flemish expertise and build a strong and resourceful network of professionals in international organisations.
