With shoulders hunched and eyes that skittishly reveal a history of physical abuse, Rose tries to stay out of her husband's way, but even feigning sleep in bed she is a target for his drunken tirades. Their son Thomas escaped to Brussels the first chance he got, and now Rose is the only one left to suffer her husband's cruelty -- which she nobly endures, until the night he recklessly hits a young woman while driving home from a bar.

Martin Provost Martin Provost is a French film director, writer and actor. A former screen and stage actor and member of the Comédie Française, Martin Provost wrote plays and novels before directing ‘Séraphine’. He also completed two shorts before his first feature, 'Tortilla y Cinéma', in 1997. 'Le Ventre de Juliette' followed in 1992, but 'Séraphine', his film on the artist Séraphine de Senlis, proved to be his public and critical breakthrough, scooping seven awards at the Césars – including Best Film and Best Actress for Yolande Moreau. His latest film is “Ou Va La Nuit”, also starring Yolande Moreau and based on the novel The Long Falling.

Dagmar Schumacher Ms. Dagmar Schumacher is the Director of the Brussels office of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (UN Women). The office in Brussels is responsible for liaising with EU institutions on advocacy, policy dialogue and joint programming. Prior to joining UN Women, Ms. Schumacher worked at the Headquarters of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme in Bonn. For five years she held both positions: Chief, Partnerships Section, UNV as well as of Donor Relations Adviser on Germany for UNDP. From 1998 – 2002 she was working with UNDP in Hanoi, heading the Poverty and Social Development Unit. She was also serving as Liaison Officer in Bonn in order to organize the move of UNV from Geneva to Germany and served as Programme Specialist for CIS and Eastern European countries with UNV. Ms. Schumacher started her career with the United Nations in 1990 as Junior Professional Officer in the Regional Office of UNIFEM in the Andean Region. Subsequently, she was the UNIFEM focal point in Buenos Aires, Argentina in preparation of the Latin-American Preparatory Conference for the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995. Ms. Schumacher is a German citizen. She holds a Master’s Degree from Kiel University.
