Sir Brian Urquhart is a living chronicle of a large part of 20th century history and occupies a special place in United Nations history. Throughout his four decades of service to the Organization, starting as one of its very first staff members and ending as an Under-Secretary-General for Special Political Affairs, he also helped shape history-making moments. He was present for the birth of the United Nations in 1945, and was witness to many of the Organization’s - and the world’s - seminal milestones. As SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-moon said in a tribute on the occasion of Sir Brian’s 90th birthday four years ago, "You have had an enormous influence on every Secretary-General. Domestic Workers Across the World: Global and regional statistics and the extent of legal protection (ILO) Report in English, Summary in English, French & Spanish: http://www.ilo.org/travail/Whatsnew/WCMS_173363/lang--en/index.htm Millions of domestic workers around the world are not protected under general labour laws and are highly vulnerable to exploitation, says this new ILO report released on 9 January 2013, which calls on countries to extend social protection to them. According to the report, more than 52 million people worldwide are employed as domestic workers. While a substantial number are men working as gardeners, drivers or butlers, 80 per cent of them are women. Of the 52 million domestic workers, only 10 per cent are covered by labour laws to the same extent as other workers, and more than one quarter are completely excluded from national labour legislation.
