Environmental Performance Review of Turkmenistan
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) carries out Environmental Performance Reviews (EPR) in its Member States that are not also members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in order to improve their environmental management by recommending ways to achieve better policy implementation. This first EPR of Turkmenistan covers 13 issues related to policymaking, planning and implementation, the financing of environmental policies and projects and the integration of environmental concerns into economic sectors, in particular the sustainable management and protection of water resources, waste management, air pollution, forestry, biodiversity and protected areas, energy and climate change. Environmental Performance Review of Albania: Second Review
The present publication takes stock of the progress made by Albania in the management of its environment since the country was first reviewed in 2002. It assesses the implementation of the recommendations contained in the first review. This second Environmental Performance Review also covers 10 issues of importance to Albania related to policymaking, planning and implementation, the financing of environmental policies and projects and the integration of environmental concerns into economic sectors, in particular the sustainable management of water resources, waste management, forestry, biodiversity and protected areas, energy and environment, and environmental health. Technology and Innovation Report 2011: Powering Development with Renewable Energy Technologies
This report argues that responding to the dual challenge of reducing energy poverty and mitigating climate change requires a new energy paradigm. Such a paradigm would have renewable energy technologies complementing (and eventually substituting) conventional energy sources in efforts to alleviate energy poverty across the developing world. This is a realistic paradigm given that the world is faced with energy poverty issues that cannot be resolved using conventional fuel sources without risking irreversible climate change. In finding newer energy solutions that integrate renewable energy with existing energy sources, developing countries will need to develop technology and innovation capabilities. This report seeks to contribute to new policy insights in this extremely complex area. Migration, Environment and Climate Change: Assessing the Evidence
Gradual and sudden environmental changes are resulting in substantial human movement and displacement, and the scale of such flows, both internal and cross-border, is expected to rise with unprecedented impacts on lives and livelihoods. Despite the potential challenge, there has been a lack of strategic thinking about this policy. Adequately planning for and managing environmentally-induced migration will be critical for human security. The papers in this volume were first presented at the Research Workshop on Migration and the Environment: Developing a Global Research Agenda held in Munich, Germany, in April 2008, which addressed the need for more sound empirical research and identify priority areas of research for policy makers in the field of migration and the environment. Final Environmental Review of the 2010 World Exposition: Shanghai, China
Expo 2010 took place in Shanghai, China, from May-October 2010, under the theme, “Better City, Better Life.” This review looks at the quantitative and qualitative environmental impact of Expo 2010, and its long-term influence on the development of Shanghai and surrounding areas. It highlights the city’s development of a 400-kilometer rapid transit network, a significant improvement of municipal planning and management systems, climate change mitigation efforts estimated to have mitigated 4,341 kilotons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent, and the use of LED lighting in nearly 100 percent of the Expo buildings. Global Environment Outlook 5 (GEO-5): Environment for the Future We Want
The Global Environment Outlook (GEO) is a major publication for all those who are interested in environmental issues. It has brought together thousands of scientists and hundreds of collaborating centres. Using the integrated environmental assessment (IEA) methodology, the United Nations Environment Programme has produced five GEO reports thus far, which have analyzed environmental state and trends at the global and regional scales, described plausible outlooks for various time frames and formulated policy options. Each GEO report builds on the assessment findings of its predecessor reports and draws upon lessons learnt.
