Language alert!

We use "had better (not)" to give advice in a particular situation.

It normally warns of something bad happening, if you do (or don't) do something. but I'd better ask the price We'd better search some more properties You'd better take up the option soon if you want this flat.

In each case "had" is shortened to " 'd" Of course, there are other ways of giving advice eg "I ought to/should ask the price" OR "We must search some more properties"
