-Message from Dr. Rosen Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! I hope your semesters and fall sports seasons have gotten off to a fantastic start. The athletic training program faculty are ready for another successful school year and everything we have in store for the students of our program. We are particularly excited to host the presidents of the Athletic Training Strategic Alliance on October 1 as well as the rebranding of our Omaha Sports Medicine Research Laboratory.

A Letter from MATS President: Ben Welch Hello, My name is Benjamin Welch! I am serving as your 2018-2019 Maverick Athletic Training Students (MATS) President. MATS is the student led program coinciding with the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Athletic Training program. We help foster fun and excitement through positive activities to help not only others, but ourselves as we grow into future healthcare professionals.

A little bit about me! I am currently a second-year graduate student here at UNO. While being here, I have had the privilege of completing almost 1000 hours of clinical work divided up between Millard West High School, the UNO men’s soccer team, and the University of Missouri football program. Prior to UNO, I did complete my undergraduate education between two schools; Moberly Area Community College (MACC) and the University of Missouri. I earned my Associate of Arts degree in May 2015 from MACC followed by my Bachelor of Health Sciences in Health Sciences from Mizzou. I have worked at Walmart for almost 6 years now and though I may work very little this coming school year, I do still plan on continue my time there. I do come from a great family of five including 3 dogs, 2 siblings, and 1 me. I was born and raised in Columbia, Missouri and do go back there from time to time. I am recently engaged to my beautiful fiancÊ, Mikayla. She lives in Joplin, Missouri where she attends the Kansas City University medical school satellite campus. Following my presumptive graduation from UNO this coming May, I will be moving down there to support her as our journey together will only be beginning.

Like Mikayla and I will be next year, this school year is just beginning! New students, new peers, new preceptors, new school for some, and new stories to be made. I had a fantastic experience as a first-year graduate student. I met so many people and colleagues, made so many new friends, all of which helped etch unforgettable memories. I am looking forward to this coming year full of gumption and thrill. I implore you to attend and participate in MATS activities as we will undoubtedly enhance your schoolyear making it even better than expected. As your MATS President for the school year, I welcome you to this new schoolyear. Good luck this year and I will see you around!

Graduation Year: 2000 Post-grad position: worked as a GA at Hastings College Current position: ATC at University of Michigan Interesting experience while working as an ATC: I have worked with teams at USA Hockey for the past 10 years. I went to the 2010 para-Olympic games and have worked with the sled hockey teams for 7 years. I was also an athletic trainer for the US World Junior team in Helsinki, Finland.

Advice for current students: Continue to learn, when you graduate that is only the basics needed to be a certified athletic trainer. Have a goal to be able to practice at the highest level of your licensure, there is a lot that you are going to learn, and you should never stop trying to grow. Have fun-we work too many hours not to have fun! Be innovative and think outside the box!

Graduation Year: 2006 Post-grad position: After graduation, I completed the Disney’s Wide World of Sports Internship during the Spring of 2007. Then I completed an internship at Washington State from 2007-2008 and then I finished my Masters in Sports Administration at the University of New Mexico from 2008-2010.

Current position: Stanford University Interesting experience while working as an ATC: I have been very fortunate to work with a company called xmed inc. alongside other athletic trainers in our profession; providing sports medicine and risk management services to action sport athletes, specifically for RedBull events across the county. I have also had the privilege to travel internationally with my sport teams at Stanford, as well as give lectures internationally.

Favorite clinical site/preceptor at UNO: Chad Kinart and Rusty McKune Advice for current students: Always have an open growth mindset and learn to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary approach.

Graduation Year: 2005 Post-grad position: After graduation, I was grandfathered into a physician extender/assistant role at a thriving orthopedic practice that specializes in joint reconstruction for: foot and ankle, spine, and hand. In this role, I was introduced to Orthotics and Prosthetics, as well as clinical trials.

Current position: After working at the practice for 5+ years, I was interested in clinical trials and the device industry. The more I learned about the regulatory process, I realized I needed to go to law school.

After law school, I got my dream job at the FDA as a Regulatory Counsel in the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). CDRH is the device arm of the Agency, where I have been involved in regulatory policy development and cross-cutting device matters that impact the public health (and yes, athletes).

Favorite clinical site/preceptor at UNO: I loved my hockey experience with Rusty McKune, because I have the upmost respect for him. Of course, no one beats Chad Kinart, who was the men’s basketball head athletic trainer and still remains a friend. However, my favorite clinical experience was (and still is) wrestling.

Advice for current students: Think outside the box and push for the career that you want. There are so many cross-cutting issues that are not limited to sports. Don’t be afraid of the unconventional job experience, it will make you well-rounded. Finally, be open to the possibilities ahead.

Graduation Year: 2007 Post-grad position: Became the head athletic trainer at Omaha South High School Current position: Athletic Trainer at Omaha South High School Interesting experience while working as an ATC: No specific experience, but I really believe at the high school level you will really do it all. Anything and everything.

Favorite clinical site/preceptor at UNO: My two high school rotations at Omaha Burke and Omaha North. I knew I wanted to work in the high school setting and I am blessed to call both of those athletic trainers co-workers now.

Advice for current students: Take advantage of the different clinical settings.

It is a huge help and a great experience.

Graduation Year: 2007 Post-grad position: Began working as the assistant athletic trainer to 2 schools in Omaha (Omaha Northwest and Omaha North High schools) through Alegent Health.

Current position: Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in the Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Specialty Pediatric Center Interesting experience while working as an ATC: I help with casting in my current setting, which is a new skill I learned after taking this job Favorite clinical site/preceptor at UNO: My summer internship was working with the Omaha Beef indoor football team. I learned a lot that summer.

Favorite class at UNO: Upper and Lower Extremity Evaluation classes Advice for current students: Work hard to get where you want to be in this field. Utilize your contacts and mentors when job searching. Once you are in a job don’t be afraid to reach out for advice and tips with anything.

Know that you are never alone even if you are the only AT working at your setting.

Hi! I am the new Graduate Assistant working with UNO women’s soccer. I am originally from Omaha, but I completed my athletic training degree at University of Nebraska-Lincoln where I worked with men’s and women’s tennis, football, track and field, women’s basketball, softball, and Lincoln Southwest High School. In addition, I worked at the Campus Recreations Injury Prevention and Care. Something most people in the AT world do not know about me is that I am also a show choir choreographer for middle and high schools. My favorite part of being an AT is the ability to watch an athlete go from being their most vulnerable after injury and throughout the recovery process to their return to sport. I love the ability I have to facilitate growth in my athletes both physically and mentally.

My name is Jeremy Edgerson. I am originally from Kansas City, Missouri and I currently serve as Head Athletic Trainer at College of Saint Mary (NAIA). I graduated from The Lindenwood University with a B.S. in Athletic Training. To further my education and clinical knowledge, I became a graduate assistant at Shorter University (NAIA, NCAA DII) in Rome, Georgia. After two years as a Graduate Assistant and one year as Assistant Athletic Trainer, I took on a more challenging role at Miles College (NCAA DII) in Birmingham, Alabama. At Miles College, I served as the Head Men’s Athletic Trainer and Head Football Athletic Trainer. With much success in the South, I decided it was time to be closer to my family in Kansas City

My biggest piece of advice for any student is to not be afraid to ask questions. So many students feel that they need to know everything all the time, but it is so important to never settle and to never stay too close to your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and never stop learning!

The best part of being an athletic trainer is being in the office in the morning with the athlete and then being able to go see that athlete perform to the best of their ability in the afternoon.

The best advice I can provide to current athletic training students is network early and never be stuck to one location. The perfect position for you may be outside of your comfort zone.

Stephanie Mace IWCC Hi everyone! I’m Stephanie and I am from Jacksonville, Florida. I’m currently working Women’s Soccer, Cross Country, and Track and Field at Iowa Western Community College. Some of you may know me, I completely my Bachelor’s of Science in Athletic Training at UNO. Over the summer, I worked the Baseball Factory camps as an athletic trainer and that was a pretty cool experience. I got to work with and meet coaches that used to play in the MLB and a lot of the kids that I worked with were from all over the United States and from different countries. A fun fact about myself is that I can remember fun facts about the most random things related to the medical field. My favorite part about being an athletic trainer is the relationships that I build with my athletes and being able to learn about different cultures and lifestyles that some of the athletes grew up with.

My current school related goal is to go to graduate school and get my Maters in Exercise Science with an emphasis in strength and conditioning, while also holding a graduate assistant position. My current career goal is to work at an NCAA Division I university/college.

My advice for current students is to take initiative and always put forth 100% to everything that you do!

We will be selling clothing such as t-shirts, long sleeve tshirts, crewneck sweatshirts, and hoodies to all family, friends, and alumni who would like to represent us! Every member of the program will have the opportunity to submit a design. The design will be decided on by the MATS officers and the Athletic Training faculty members.

-Jacqui Gutierrez and Shyanne Saladino Hi All! I just wanted to give you a heads up about open lab sessions. Within the next few weeks (around September 1st) you will be receiving an email/be invited to fill out a Facebook poll within the MATS group page regarding preferred open lab times for the semester. Based on the times suggested by both students and professors, 2-3 open lab sessions will be offered each week throughout the semester. There will be a sign-up genius sent to everyone to sign up for lab sessions along with a comment box where you can describe what you would like to work on during the lab. At least one (1) person must sign up or the lab session will be cancelled.

During these lab sessions, you will have a change to work on practical skills, go over class material, or complete second checkoffs.
