PRIORITIZING STUDENT WELLNESS DURING FINALS As finals week looms, student self-care often takes a backseat as studying, papers, and projects become top priorities. Jen Papproth, Executive Director of Accessibility and Healthy Living at UNO, says prioritizing self-care during finals is vital. Building in time to exercise, meditate, or do yoga can be helpful. Additionally, engaging with support systems, planning ahead, and breaking up tasks may decrease overwhelming feelings for students. ?This is a timeframe when we often overextend ourselves and experience high levels of stress. When we are not taking care of our basic needs, we are not typically our best selves,? said Papproth.

TIPS FOR TALKING TO YOUR STUDENT ABOUT GRADES -

Establish expectations about discussing grades before the semester begins to make it a natural part of ongoing communication.

-

Approach conversations about grades with a helpful tone, emphasizing support and understanding rather than passing judgment.

-

Set aside dedicated time for a thorough discussion about grades to foster meaningful communication.

-

Keep in mind that first-semester grades for new students may differ from high school grades and should be viewed in the context of a significant transitional period.

-

Acknowledge and congratulate good grades while encouraging an honest evaluation of poor grades to identify lessons learned and strategies for improvement.

UNO offers various wellness resources that students are encouraged to take advantage of. Papproth says parents can help encourage students as their academic journey intensifies. ?Reminding students of taking breaks and offering to give them a healthy snack will promote subtle and encouraging reminders to practice self-care.?
