UNM Truman Health Services No Show Cancellation Policy We understand that issues may occur, and you may need to cancel an appointment. If this happens, we respectfully ask that you contact our office in advance to reschedule your appointment. Our complementary therapy providers (acupuncture, chiropractic and medical massage therapy) want to be available to meet the needs of all our patients. When a patient does not show up for a scheduled appointment, another patient loses an opportunity to be seen. Beginning August 13, 2014, if patients do not contact our office to cancel or reschedule a complementary service appointment, preferably 24 hours in advance, any future appointments will be canceled. Two (2) consecutive no shows or cancellations will result in future appointments being canceled and you will not be able to reschedule with our complementary providers for six (6) months. This policy will enable us to open otherwise unused appointments to better serve the needs of all patients. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we institute this policy.

We are currently seeking individuals to be part of a Patient Advisory Council (PAC). What is PAC? As part of our Patient Centered Medical Home initiative, UNM THS is forming a Patient Advisory Council. PAC will be comprised of 8-10 patients and Staff Liaison. Make a Difference If you would like to be on the Patient Advisory Council, please ask the Patient Services Coordinator (front desk) for an application.

Consider How Smoking Affects You -by Adam Metcalf You have heard it multiple times “smoking is bad for you, you need to stop” and there are multiple reasons why this is true; but if you have HIV the repercussions from smoking are even more dangerous. Take it from Brian a former smoker living with HIV. Brian was in good health, working a steady job, and managing his HIV infection. Brian’s one bad habit, smoking. Brian had gone through some pretty tough health care issues surrounding HIV, but even though he was focused on getting healthy he continued to smoke. Eventually his smoking habit became an even more serious health issue. For Brian, smoking and having HIV led to clogged blood vessels and at the age of 43 he had gotten blood clots in his lungs, a stroke, and needed surgery on an artery in his neck to save his life. “It took a stroke for me to actually stop smoking,” said Brian. For months after the stroke, Brian had trouble speaking and reading. He couldn’t go to work or even dress himself. He still suffers from the after effects of the stroke; his right hand is weak, he can no longer work as a waiter or teach pottery classes. Brian hopes his story will inspire other people living with HIV, and people who are not, to stop smoking. “Smoking is something that you do have control over. You can stop and it’s worth your life to stop smoking” To learn more about Brian and his battle with HIV and smoking visit: http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/campaign/tips/stories/brian.html

Did you know HIV-positive smokers:    

Are a higher risk than non-smokers with HIV of developing lung cancer, head and neck cancers, cervical and anal cancers, and many other types of cancers; Are more likely than non-smokers with HIV to develop bacterial pneumonia, Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonia (PCP), COPD, and heart disease; Are more likely than non-smokers with HIV to develop two conditions that affect the mouth: oral candidiasis (thrush) and oral hairy leukoplakia; Are more likely to have a poorer response to antiretroviral therapy.

People with HIV who smoke are also less likely to keep to their HIV treatment plan and have a greater likelihood of developing an AIDS-defining condition and dying earlier than non-smokers with HIV. Thinking about quitting? There is help available: 1) Call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free coaching and medication assistance by phone. 2) Talk to your primary care doctor or UNM Truman Health Services pharmacist Jessica Conklin about options for quitting. 3) UNM Truman Health Services offers individual and group counseling for smoking cessation. Contact Adam Metcalf, Behavioral Health Therapist, for more details at 925-7518. Did you know 20 minutes after you stop smoking your blood pressure goes down; 8 hours after you stop smoking the carbon monoxide levels in your blood return to normal; 24 hours after your stop smoking your chances of a heart attack decrease; 2 weeks to 3 months your circulation and lung capacity improve by 30%; 5 years after you stop smoking your stroke risk is reduced to non-smoker levels; 10 years after you stop smoking your risk of dying from lung cancer is about half of that of a current smoker!

A Little Bit About Labor Day We all know Labor Day as a celebration at the end of summer, when most workers have the day off, towns have parades, people get together for barbeques and we all have a three day weekend. Although the traditions have changed the meaning behind Labor Day has not. It is a “holiday for the people” and has been celebrated since 1882. The early 19th Century was a time when labor unions were strong and their fight for better working conditions for laborers was at its peak. The Central Labor Union, one of the strongest in New York City, proposed a day off for working people and the first Labor Day was held on Tuesday, September 5, 1882. The proposal from the Central Labor Union stated there should be a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations”, followed by a festival for “recreation and amusement for the laborers and their families”. These traditions, although changed slightly, still exist today. In 1884 Labor Day was changed to the first Monday in September and has remained so ever since. -Happy Labor Day from UNM Truman Health Services!

National HIV Observance Days National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day – September 18th 2014 The AIDS Institute launched National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day (NHAAAD) in 2008. The 2014 theme for NHAAAD is: Aging is a part of life: HIV doesn’t have to be. NHAAAD was established due to the fact that a growing number of people aged 50 and older in the United States are living with HIV infection. Here are some quick facts:

 

Americans aged 50 and older have many of the same HIV risk factors as younger Americans. Persons aged 55 and older accounted for 19% (217,300) of the estimated 1.1 million people living with HIV infection in the United States in 2010.

Older Americans are more likely than younger Americans to be diagnosed with HIV infection later in the course of their disease. For more information about local NHAAAD Events and how you can become involved please contact our Community Health Resources Team at 925-7286 or THSOutreach@unmmg.org. For more information on aging and HIV please visit http://www.thebody.com/index/whatis/older.html

National Gay Men’s HIV Awareness Day – September 27th 2014 National Gay Men's HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NGMHAAD) is September 27. In 2008 the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) launched this observance day to recognize the disproportionate impact of the epidemic on gay men. Gay and bisexual men of all races continue to be the risk group most severely affected by HIV. CDC’s most recent data show that between 2008 and 2010, the number of new infections among men who had sex with men (MSM) increased 12 percent, with an even steeper increase among the youngest MSM. The data clearly showed the urgent need to expand access to proven HIV prevention programs for gay and bisexual men, and to develop new approaches to fight HIV in this population. NGMHAAD is about encouraging HIV awareness, HIV testing, and HIV prevention education and resources. For more information on local NGMHAAD events and how you can get involved contact our Community Health Resources Team at 925-7286 orTHSOutreach@unmmg.org. For more information on HIV among gay men visit http://aids.gov/news-and-events/awareness-days/gay-mens

National Latino AIDS Awareness Day – October 15th 2014 The last day of Hispanic Heritage Month, October 15th, has been designated as National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD). In 2003, NLAAD was established in response to the impact of HIV and AIDS on Hispanic/Latino communities nationwide, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. NLAAD is a national community mobilization and social marketing campaign that unites the Hispanic/Latino community in efforts to raise HIV awareness, promotion of HIV testing, prevention and education; in addition to other critical health issues such as Viral Hepatitis, Sexually Transmitted Infections and Tuberculosis. NLAAD is also a capacity building opportunity that aims to improve the ability of community based organizations, faith based congregations, and local health departments to provide HIV testing, prevention and education services through collaboration and partnership opportunities. Local agencies here in Albuquerque are working to bring multiple events in observation of NLAAD. For more information on local events and how you can get involved contact our Community Health Resources Team at 925-7286 or THSOutreach@unmmg.org. Healing From the Loss of a Loved One By Adam Metcalf, LISW Adapted from the Diagnosis Dictionary from Psychology Today. Read the full article at: http://www.psychologytoday.com/conditions/bereavement

Bereavement is the feeling of being sad because a family member or friend has died. Grief over the loss of a loved one is a normal healthy reaction which continues until a person comes to peaceful acceptance of the loss. People who are grieving often experience anger, guilt, depressed mood, sadness, crying spells, trouble sleeping, change in appetite, loss of interest and pleasure in life, difficulties concentrating and lack of productivity at work. At times, certain circumstances of a death cause complications in the mourning process and limit someone’s ability to come to peaceful acceptance. There can be feelings of responsibility for the death, feelings of injustice around the reasons for the death, and stressful decisions about financial and legal matters. Fears of being alone and of your own mortality may also trigger more severe grief. Additionally, a person may be sad thinking about all of the upcoming experiences that the deceased person will not be a part of. The loss of a loved one includes a loss of a part of your own identity, a puzzle piece of your life that needs to be reorganized. While the loved one should not be forgotten, counseling and support groups help a person to separate from the person who died, readjust roles, identity and skills and get their emotional needs met from others. Grief can be painful and exhausting which leads some people to try and avoid it; however, expressing grief can lead to powerful healing. Grief counseling and bereavement support groups can help this healing process by: 

Describing normal grieving and encouraging the bereaved to accept the loss by talking about it

Helping the bereaved to identify and express feelings related to the loss (for example, anger, guilt, anxiety, helplessness, and sadness)

Helping the bereaved to separate emotionally from the deceased, as well as to make decisions and adjust to life without the deceased

Helping the bereaved to understand his or her methods of coping

Describing normal grieving and the differences in grieving among individuals

Providing continuous support

Providing support at important times, such as birthdays and anniversaries

Identifying coping problems the bereaved may have and other resources available

UNM Truman Health Services offers professional grief counseling and a bereavement support group to help you through this difficult time. Join us the third Monday of every month.
