JUST A NOTE

We hope that everyone is having a fantastic summer and that you’ve had a chance to get outside and enjoy some sunshine (when it’s not pouring rain of course!) As the summer nears an end, we are gearing up for the annual HIV Walk NM, happening on Sunday, September 30th. We invite you and your family and/or friends to come out and walk with us as part of Team Truman! You don’t need to sign up, all you need to do is: show up on the day of the event, find someone from Team Truman (we will have a table at the event so it will be easy to find us), walk along with us (if you wish to and are able to), and have a great time! The annual HIV Walk is an event to bring together folks from all across the state to raise awareness of HIV, decrease HIV related stigma, and raise money to help organizations that provide services for people living with HIV. We hope to see you there! If you have any questions about the event please feel free to contact us at THSInfo@unmmg.org or call (505) 925-7286. —Your Truman Health Services Team

Within the first month of taking PrEP, some complain about nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and dizziness. Most people don’t experience serious side effects, but be sure to discuss health concerns you may have with your doctor.

AUTUMN is HERE HEALTH & SAFETY TIPS

HEALTH & SAFETY TIPS

KEEP FOOD SAFE

Now that summer is coming to a close, follow these tips

Food is center stage during the holidays. Be

from DOH for a safe and healthy autumn!

sure to keep it safe by following basic food

TAKE STEPS TO PREVENT THE FLU The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year in the fall. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands often. Stay home if you get sick.

GET SMART ABOUT ANTIBIOTICS Antibiotics can cure bacterial infections, but not viral infections. The common cold and the flu are viral infections, so avoid using antibiotics if you have one of these. Using antibiotics when they are not needed causes some bacteria to become resistant to the antibiotic, and therefore stronger and harder to kill. See your doctor or nurse to find out if your illness is bacterial or viral.

HAVE A SAFE AND HEALTHY HALLOWEEN Make Halloween festivities fun, safe, and healthy for trick-or-treaters and party guests.

TEST AND REPLACE BATTERIES Check or replace carbon monoxide batteries twice a year when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. Replace smoke alarm alkaline batteries at least once a year. Test alarms every month to ensure they work properly.

safety steps. Clean hands and surfaces often. Separate foods to avoid cross-contamination. Cook to proper temperatures. Chill promptly.

LEARN YOUR FAMILY HISTORY National Family History Day is observed on Thanksgiving Day. Over the holiday or at another family gathering, talk about and write down the health conditions that run in your family. Learning about your family’s health history can help you take steps to ensure a longer, healthier future together.

BE PREPARED FOR COLD WEATHER. Exposure to cold temperatures can cause serious health problems. Infants and the elderly are particularly at risk, but anyone can be affected. Know how to prevent health problems and what to do if a cold-weather emergency arises. Remember that using space heaters and fireplaces can increase the risk of household fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

AT YOUR APPOINTMENT You can make sure you get the best care possible by being an active member of your healthcare team. Being involved means being prepared and asking questions. Asking questions about your medical treatments and medications can improve the quality of your health care. · Use a notebook to keep track of  appointments, results, questions  for your provider (and answers),  medications, etc. · Keep a symptom tracker list. Let your  provider know if there have been any  issues with your medication(s) or any  other health concerns since your last  appointment. · This will help your  appointment go faster and  run more smoothly. · Bring a list of questions about your  diagnosis if you are newly diagnosed. · Write your appointment date and  time on the calendar so that you  won't miss it. · If you have a cell phone, use it to keep  track of appointments and any notes  from your latest appointment. · Cell phone apps are also available to  help you with medication adherence.  Share any information on issues with  your medication with your provider. · While at your appointment, let your  provider know how you are feeling. · Be honest and don't leave out  any details. Your provider cannot  give you the best care possible if  you don't share all of your health  information. Don't worry about being  embarrassed—your provider has  heard it all! · Keep an open mind. · Write everything down. This will  help you keep track of your health  progress, and can alert your provider  immediately if anything changes.

HIV Guide for the Newly Diagnosed Adapted from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention

How Can I Stay Healthy with HIV? · Take medication called ART (antiretroviral therapy) the  right way, every day, regardless of how long you have  had the virus. · Stay in medical care. · Visit your healthcare provider regularly. · Find a local support group, talk to others who have HIV.

How can I help paying for ART? · If you have health insurance, your insurer is required  to cover some medications used to treat HIV.

· If you don't have health insurance or you can't afford  your co-pay or co-insurance amount, you may be  able to get help through Medicare, Medicaid, the  Ryan White HIV/AIDS program, and community  health centers.

How Can I Protect Others? · Take ART every day. This can keep you healthy and  greatly reduce your chances of transmitting HIV.

· Tell your sex partner(s) that you are living with HIV. · Use condoms correctly every time you have sex. · Choose sexual activities that will minimize your risk  of spreading HIV.

· If you inject drugs or other substances, never share  your needles or works.

· Talk to your partners about taking daily medications  to prevent HIV. · Get tested and treated for other sexually-transmitted  infections/diseases.

· Remind your friends/partners to get tested regularly.

WHAT DOES “LGBTQ+” MEAN? BY CURTIS BILLIE, HEALTH EDUCATOR

DID YOU KNOW? The amount of HIV in your blood is called your "viral load." Viral load shows how fast HIV is reproducing in your body—the lower the viral load, the better. Your "CD4 cell count" measures the health of your immune system. The higher it is, the better your body can fight infection.

This is a great question as

should share the same respect.

The list of identities does go on but generally LGBTQ+ is used as it does not limit who is a part of the community, and it rolls off the tongue much easier. There are many other sexual orientations such as Pansexual (attracted to other people regardless of gender) and Asexual (a person who has no sexual feelings or desires) just to name a few others. They fit under the + acronym, not to diminish them nor their sexualities but simply to keep the acronym user friendly. Here’s the catch,

“They fit under the + acronym, not to diminish them nor their sexualities but simply to keep the acronym user friendly.” —Curtis Billie, Health Educator

Here are 5 facts from the CDC about your viral load and CD4 cell count that you should know: 1. Taking every dose, every day, is the key #to a low viral load and a high CD4 count. #When HIV medicine keeps the virus under #control, your body can make more CD4 #cells. Healthy adults usually have 500 to #1800 CD4 cell counts. 2. CD4 cells defend your body against #infections and other illnesses. Without HIV #medicine, too many CD4 cells are #destroyed by the virus. The lower your #CD4 cell count is, the harder it is to #stay healthy. 3. An undetectable viral load is the result #you want from taking your HIV #medication. Having an undetectable viral #load means the amount of virus is so low #that it cannot be measured by the blood #test. This shows that your medicine is #working and has the virus under control. 4. An undetectable viral load doesn't mean #that you no longer have HIV. Your body #can never completely get rid of HIV. It #is still there even when lab tests cannot #detect it. Even though your viral load #isn't detectable, you should still take #your medication. 5. HIV viral medicine makes it harder for #the virus to make copies of itself. Taking #your medicine at the correct time every #day keeps the right amount in your body. #When you skip doses, the virus can multiply #and change so that your medicine no #longer works.
