CENTER FOR MICRO-ENGINEERED MATERIALS (CMEM)

CENTER FOR HIGH
CENTER ON ALCOHOL, SUBSTANCE USE, AND ADDICTIONS (CASAA)
After CHTM became a UNM staple – nearly six years later –researchers commenced on a new interdisciplinary research journey with CASAA. The center serves as the nexus for alcohol, substance use, and addiction research in the State of New Mexico and beyond, by conducting high quality scientific research with the ultimate goal of reducing su ering related to substance use and other addictive behaviors.
NEW MEXICO’S ESTABLISHED PROGRAM TO STIMULATE COMPETITIVE RESEARCH (NM EPSCOR)
ACCELERATING RESILIENCE INNOVATIONS IN DRYLANDS INSTITUTE (ARID)
Last year, in a highly anticipated launch, ARID became a formal part of UNM’s research enterprise. The institute maximizes the resilience of drylands to climate change, while fostering transdisciplinary research, co-creating innovations with community and industry partners, and equitably training the next generation to improve economic, human, and ecosystem health in New Mexico and beyond.
TECHNOLOGY MATERIALS (CHTM)
For more than 40 years, CHTM’s mission has been to create and sustain a culture of excellence that promotes interdisciplinary research and education in photonics, microelectronics and nanoscale materials, as well as devices and their applications. Simultaneously, CHTM fosters interactions between UNM and federal laboratories to promote an entrepreneurial spirit for economic development with a regional focus that maintains global importance.
*Before formally becoming Category 3 centers and institutes in 2017, BBER, SHRI, LGMI, and GPS had long and rich histories that have significantly impacted the UNM research enterprise.

QUANTUM NEW MEXICO INSTITUTE (QNM-I)
Fast forward to 2024, UNM introduced the newest Category 3 Center, the Quantum New Mexico Institute (QNM-I), a research institute that seeks to accomplish transformative, long-lasting breakthroughs in Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE). The QNM-I is a joint institute with Sandia National Laboratories, solidifying New Mexico’s role as a hub for QISE in the nation.

1 University of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM 87131
The University of New Mexico has 11 Category 3 research centers and institutes — its most recent launched in 2024 — with diverse research endeavors, goals, and missions. Category 3 research centers and institutes focus on interdisciplinary research that extends beyond the traditional boundaries of a single discipline, department, or college. For more than 40 years, UNM's 11 centers have elevated the University's interdisciplinary research landscape by exploring new questions to create new knowledge; developing cutting-edge technologies; collaborating with industry and community partners; providing unique opportunities to students at all levels; and changing the world around us.
