Message from Your FullTime VP, Dallas (And yes, he DID used to have a beard!)

While I miss you all dearly, I am thankful that we live in a time that allows us to continue our world-class legal education from the safety of our homes: Keep up your amazing work! To our graduating colleagues, please do not let these circumstances diminish the magnitude of your accomplishment. This is but one semester in your much larger academic and professional journey, and your continued success is inevitable. I admire you. To those of us that have the privilege of returning to Boyd next year, I cannot wait to see you at school again. This challenge is temporary; it shall pass. Most of all, I am thankful for our collective strength. It is incredible to see student organizations and administration continue with regular activities and business as usual. Clearly, our resolve is much stronger than any virus.

2019 - 2020 AWARD RECIPIENTS WILLIAM S. BOYD SCHOOL OF LAW

SBA Justice Award HON. BRENDA WEKSLER

Judge Weksler joined the Court in 2019 following 16 years as a trial attorney at the Federal Public Defender Office. She has a wide array of litigation experience in federal court representing indigent clients charged with various federal crimes. She taught seminars on several topics across the country, including evidentiary and procedural issues, and was the Trial Training Director for the Federal Public Defender’s Office from 2012-2019. Judge Weksler graduated from Boyd in 2002.

SBA Advocacy Award NV State Senator Yvanna Cancela

SBA Service Award

Yvanna Cancela represents Nevada’s 10th district in the State Senate. She was appointed to the seat in December 2016 and became the first Latina to ever serve in the Chamber. Her work has focused on drug cost transparency and increasing access to affordable healthcare. She chaired the Natural Resources committee and served on Commerce and Labor. Yvanna’s career has been dedicated to community engagement and mobilization. When not in session, Yvanna works as the executive director of the Immigrant Workers Citizenship Project. Yvanna is a fellow colleague and 3L at Boyd.

Marisa Rodriguez, Esq.

Marisa is a Senior Deputy City Attorney with the City of North Las Vegas. She serves as counsel to the city council, city departments, and various city commissions. Marisa was nominated by Senator Cortez-Masto to be a member of the Bipartisan Judicial Selection Commission in Southern Nevada. She serves on the Advisory Board to the Justice Douglas Fellowship Program at Boyd. Last year, she founded the Latino Bar Association’s ¡Andale! 5K which raised over $40,000 to fund scholarships for LSAT preparation. She graduated from Boyd in 2013.
