INTRODUCTION

Project Brief Design Overview

Project Brief

With so many skincare gimmicks on the market, it’s hard to find trustworthy products that actually cater to your skin. From bubbling sheet masks to magnetic clay masks and blue light creams, simple products that work are getting harder to find in a field that’s becoming increasingly trend based and gimmicky. Additionally, many skincare brands are vague about what products work well together, what products don’t, and what order to apply them to your skin.

Skin theory is a skincare brand aiming to help those with specific skin needs by offering a simple range of products, each focusing on a single ingredient meant to be combined with another to reach a skincare goal. Formula-like labels advise you what products to mix in order to achieve that desired goal. For example, one label could read “tea tree oil + hyaluronic acid = an ultimate irritation soother”. By having no all-in-one products, customers are able to mix and match specific ingredients for their target needs without unnecessary additives.

Design Overview

Aiming for a clean concept, we wanted to capture the essence of elegance in our design and balance it with a DIY-esqueness. The brand focuses on simple ingredients that feel high-end, so the minimalistic design should reflect this and convey a sense of calm and naturalism. Due to the notion of Skin Theory, the design needs to be interchangeable to highlight a single ingredient per product and stay cohesive across a varitety of packaging and assets.

As an inclusive brand, the target audience is anyone with a specific skin care need who finds that generic products aren’t working for them. With a broad target audience, the design must be readable and pleasing to all ages. Geometric imagery is utilized for accents throughout the design to increase visual interest and allude to the ingredient mixing formulas.

Color Palette

The color scheme consists of white and shades of green to compliment a concious brand with cruelty free, plastic-free products. Green is also representative of nature which most of the skincare ingredients are derived from. Using one hue emphasizes the simplicity of Skin Theory and creates an appealing monochromatic visual.

Only one type family is used throughout the Skin Theory branding to further respresent simplicity, and was chosen for it’s clean lines and unique lack of terminals on letters such as the lowercase “r” and “n”. New Order Semibold is used as a header font, and New Order Regular is used as a body font.

Logo Breakdown

1. The diamonds are a simplified sparkle to symbolize cleanliness, and relates to the geometric imagery associated with formulas.

2. The ligatures connecting the “S” to “k” and “n” to “y” were added to introduce an organic element in relation to the ingredients and their naturalism. It also alludes to the skincare path customers take when aiming for their skin goals.

3. The rounded rectangle and inverted type compliment the first half of the logo to show how different ingredients work together to achieve unity, similar to our skincare formulas.
