Quien soy
M
i nombre es Natan Tarragó Terradellas. Nací en Barcelona el 22 de diciembre de 1982, y actualmente resido en Montblanc, Tarragona. Empecé a pintar y dibujar cuando era muy joven. Mi tío Antonio Lavall Pitarch, pintor y escultor autodidacta, fue quien despertó mi interés por la pintura. El arte fue para mí una forma de recrearme personalmente, divertirme y escaparme de todo. Tras finalizar el bachillerato, opté por continuar mis estudios, en la Escuela de Arte y Diseño EADT de Tarragona, finalizados en 2011. Mi interés con el arte surge desde temprana edad, pero mi vida y mi trabajo artístico han dado un giro de 180º desde que decidí dedicarme a la pintura sin gafas, habiendo sido diagnosticado con Retinosis Pigmentaria. Para mí, el arte es un concepto que engloba todas las creaciones realizadas por los humanos para expresar su visión del mundo que les rodea, ya sea real o imaginario. El arte te permite expresar ideas, emociones, percepciones y nuevas sensaciones. Al mismo tiempo, cualquier patología que afecte la visión personal de un artista, tanto física como psicológica, afectará también su interpretación del mundo. Tuve que adaptarme a la adversidad y no poner barreras, para poder abrir la ventana y ver el mundo y todo lo que hay en él desde una nueva perspectiva, que, hasta entonces, no me había dado cuenta que estaba frente a mí.

Como dijo Francis Bacon,
“El misterio no está en la imagen, sino en cómo fue pintada”.
Todos y cada uno de los nuevos trabajos que comienzo son un nuevo desafío para mí, ya que siempre estoy trabajando en ideas desde un enfoque conceptual. Todos son ni más ni menos de lo que son. Lo que importa no es el resultado, sino todo el proceso creativo. Como dijo Francis Bacon, “El misterio no está en la imagen, sino en cómo fue pintada”. Mi acercamiento al arte es multidisciplinar, con una amplia variedad de propuestas e inquietudes, tanto personales como globales. Es ‘del momento’. Sin querer clasificarlo como parte de ningún movimiento actual o post-ni-ismo, simplemente me esfuerzo por expresarme libremente, pensando y mostrando mis preocupaciones al público.

intar sin gafas es, para mí, una nueva forma de ver la realidad que me rodea. La idea es adaptar mi discapacidad visual a la forma en que veo el mundo de hoy, abriendo nuevas percepciones y formas de expresión antes desconocidas para mí. Estoy convencido de que cualquier tipo de patología, en mi caso visual, afecta la interpretación del mundo de una persona. Mis investigaciones personales me han llevado a creer que esto es particularmente cierto para un artista y su obra, el hecho es que veo el mundo de una manera específica y personal, diferente a cualquier otra persona. Este es el resultado de una combinación de factores. Además de la miopía, también sufro de una afección conocida como retinosis pigmentaria o RTP, como yo la llamo. Tenerlo es prácticamente una forma de vida: es un poco como mirar dentro de un tubo. Me di cuenta de que tratar de corregir esto con gafas me daba una percepción falsa de todo. Solo eliminándolos podría expresar en mis pinturas qué y cómo realmente veo. Hoy en día, sin la ‘máscara’, pinto concentrándome en la espontaneidad de las pinceladas que representan la distorsión que veo y las emociones que esto produce. A menudo se trata de una sensación de impotencia, porque --dependiendo de mi distancia con el modelo-- puedo distinguir más o menos detalles, haciendo el proceso más intuitivo.

Como artistas, tomamos la realidad y le damos cierta corporeidad, basándonos en cómo vemos y sentimos. Ejemplos de artistas con discapacidad visual que han incorporado esto en su trabajo incluyen Turner, Monet, Degas, Cezanne, Renoir y Pissarro, entre otros. Habiendo buscado información sobre mi condición, me sorprendió descubrir que numerosos Grandes Maestros, particularmente los Impresionistas, padecían diferentes problemas oculares. Ante esto, desafiaron sus limitaciones personales, atreviéndose a demostrarlas en su trabajo. Por ejemplo, Cézanne era muy miope y, sin embargo, a diferencia de otros, decidió no compensar esto y reprodujo exactamente lo que vio. Nunca usó gafas para pintar y se negó rotundamente a que su percepción “corrigiera”. “Los paisajes de ciertos pintores impresionistas, con su falta de detalles y colores vibrantes, podrían ser el resultado de su vista, más que de su interpretación personal”. (Noel Dam, 2003). Al quitarme las gafas, he abandonado los confines de la cueva de Platón y puedo ver la verdad, la luz y la realidad en la pintura por primera vez. Pinto lo que realmente veo, y no la realidad transformada que dan mis gafas. Este simple hecho ha permitido ver desde una perspectiva totalmente nueva. Pinto mi realidad. “Mi condición limita mi espacio creativo, pero no mi capacidad para crear”.

Who I am
M
y name is Natan Tarragó Terradellas. I was born in Barcelona on December 22, 1982, and currently reside in Montblanc, Tarragona. I started painting and drawing when I was very young. My uncle, Antonio Lavall Pitarch, a self-taught painter and sculptor, was the one who awoke my interest in painting. Art was for me a way to

recreate myself personally, have fun and escape from everything. After completing high school, I chose to continue my studies, at the EADT School of Art and Design in Tarragona, completed in 2011. My involvement with art stems from an early age, but my life and my artistic work have undergone a 180º turn since I decided to dedicate myself to painting without my glasses, having been diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa. For me, art is a concept that encompasses all the creations made by humans to express their vision of the world around them, be it real or imaginary. Art allows you to express ideas, emotions, perceptions and new sensations. At the same time, any pathology that affects the personal vision of an artist --both physical and psychological-- will also affect his interpretation of the world.

I had to adapt to adversity and not put up barriers, in order to open the window and see the world and everything in it from a new perspective, which, until then, I had not realized was in front of me. Each and every new work I undertake is a fresh challenge for me, as I am always working on ideas from a conceptual approach. All are neither more nor less than what they are. What matters is not the result, but the entire creative process. As Francis Bacon said, “The mystery is not in the image, but in how it was painted.” My approach to art is multidisciplinary, with a wide variety of proposals and concerns, both personal and global. It is ‘of the moment’. Not wishing to classify it as part of any current or post-ni-ism movement, I simply strive to express myself freely, thinking and showing my concerns to the public.

ainting without glasses is, for me, a new way of seeing the reality around me. The idea is to adapt my visual impairment to the way I view the world of today, opening new perceptions and forms of expression previously unknown to me. I am convinced that any type of pathology --in my case a visual one-- affects a person’s interpretation of the world. My personal investigations have led me to believe that this is particularly true for an artist and his work.The fact is, I see the world in a specific and personal way, different from anybody else. 11

This is the result of a combination of factors. In addition to myopia, I also suffer from a condition known as retinitis pigmentosa, or RTP as I call it. Having it is virtually a way of life: it’s a bit like looking into a tube. I came to realise that trying to correct this with glasses gave me a false perception of everything. Only by removing them could I express in my paintings what and how I truly see. Nowadays, with my ’mask’ off, I paint concentrating on the spontaneity of the brushstrokes which represent the distortion that I see, and the emotions this produces. Often this is a sense of impotence, because --depending on my distance from the model--I can distinguish more or less detail of, making the process more intuitive. As artists, we take reality and give it a certain corporeity, based on how we see and feel. Examples of artists with visual impairments who have incorporated this in their work include Turner, Monet,

Degas, Cezanne, Renoir and Pissarro, among others. Having looked for information about my condition, I was surprised to discover that numerous Great Masters, particularly the Impressionists, suffered from different eye problems. In the face of this, they challenged their personal limitations, daring to demonstrate them in their work. For example, Cezanne was severely short-sighted, and yet, unlike others, chose not to compensate for this, and reproduced exactly what he saw. He never used glasses to paint , and rotundly refused to have his perception ‘corrected’. “The landscapes of certain Impressionist painters, with their lack of detail and vibrant colours, could be the result of their eyesight, rather than their personal interpretation.” (Noel Dam,2003). By taking off my glasses, I have now left the confines of Plato’s Cave, and can see truth, light and reality in painting for the first time. I paint what I truly see, and not the transformed reality given by my glasses. This simple fact has allowed to see from a totally new perspective. I paint my reality. “My condition limits my creative space, but not my capacity to create.”

¡Una razón, cómo se desarrolló todo!
E
stas obras forman parte de un largo proceso de trabajo que aún se encuentra vigente. Al principio, antes de llegar al estándar actual, esto nació cuando frecuentaba un club de música, allí fue donde conocí a mucha gente de este mundo, entre ellos algunos DJs, donde alguien me dijo que hiciera un logo que estuviera relacionado con los ídolos de la Isla de Pascua. A partir de aquí comencé a buscar muchas imágenes de máscaras y símbolos de otras culturas, busqué inspiración o referencias para desarrollar la idea de algo que estaba buscando pero todavía estaba cocinando, pero la idea no se acaba. Hice un montón de diseños de máscaras inventados por mi imaginación, había estado trabajando durante muchos meses pero no encontré nada que me llamara la atención para hacer esos logotipos que finalmente dejé de hacer, pero seguí trabajando en las máscaras porque tenía curiosidad por saber dónde podían llevarme. El punto de inflexión fue un día que tomé mi cuaderno de bocetos para una comida con una familia peruana que hizo una “Pachamanca” en mi rollo dibujado, y comenzó a llover y la página donde lo dibujé se mojó, en el momento en que cubrió la carne debajo de la tierra luego de clavar una cruz en el suelo mientras bendecía a la Madre Tierra por esa cocción de esos alimentos, para mí fue algo muy espiritual y sorprendente yo tenía sentimientos di-

ferentes en ese momento, lo curioso fue cuando la comida fue removida de la tierra, dejó de llover y cuando nos sentamos a la mesa cayó una gran inundación, es como si la tierra nos hubiera bendecido en ese momento y nos dejara sacar la comida de su vientre como se cocinaba en un horno dentro de la tierra, algo mágico. La página donde lo dibujé y cómo lo continué fue muy mágico porque a partir de ese momento, como por arte de magia, este tipo de composiciones que hago salieron de la nada. Hoy sigo trabajando en el patrón de principio mucho más evolucionado, para mí son garabatos o dibujos de este tipo si pueden ser parecidos, pero con un contenido y mensaje diferente. Para mí es una forma única de escribir, en ese momento sentí que tenía una forma de avanzar como artista con un estilo muy personal y donde podía moverme libremente sin un objetivo final con una obra y un proceso muy abierto que dentro una misma tendencia de trabajo, hay diferentes etapas o motivaciones. La principal motivación es la inspiración y la curiosidad de ser, el fluir e ir en busca de algo que me fue otorgado por la idea o una motivación real, donde me estoy expresando más como realmente soy, termina siendo tu forma de ser o sentimiento- si es un artista, su verdadera personalidad más mental, creativa, curiosa, sentimental, que proviene de las profundidades del yo interior. Capturo mi esencia de una manera creativa muy automática. Las obras son como anécdotas o historias de un diario personal, es como la escritura automática como solían hacer los surrealistas, las obras son muy psicológicas y expresivas de mis estados de ánimo, mis pensamientos y dudas, representados por estos modernos jeroglíficos y pictogramas relacionados con lo antiguo. unos y símbolos o elementos actuales, personajes de la era del consumidor que todo el mundo puede reconocer. Creando una cosmogonía, un universo único y personal.

A why, how everything developed!
T
hese works are part of a long work process that is still in force. In principle, before reaching the current pattern, this was born when I frequented a music club, there it was where I met many people from this world, including some DJs, where someone told me to make a logo that was related to the idols of the Islands. Pacific Easter. From here I began to look for many images of masks and symbols from other cultures, I looked for inspiration or references to develop the idea of something I was looking for but it was really still cooking, but the idea did not finish. I made many drawings of masks invented by my imagination. I had been working for many months but I could not find anything that caught my attention to make those logos that I finally gave up on doing, but I continued working on the masks because I was curious as to where they could take me. The turning point was one day that I took my drawing pad to a meal with a Peruvian family who made a “Pachamanca” on my drawn roll, and it started to rain and the page where I was drawing got wet, at the moment when they covered the meat under the ground after nailing a cross to the ground while blessing mother earth for that cooking of those foods, for me it was something very spiritual and surprising I had different feelings during that time,

the curious thing was when the food was removed from the earth, it stopped raining and when we sat down on the table a great flood fell, it is as if the earth had blessed us that moment and let us take the food from inside its belly since it was cooked in an oven inside the earth , something magic. The page where I drew it dry and as I continued it was very magical because from that moment, as if by magic, these types of compositions that I do came out of nowhere. Today I continue to work on the pattern of the much more evolved principle, for me they are doodles or drawings of this type if they can be similar but with a different content and message. For me it is a unique way of writing, at that moment I felt that I had a way of moving forward as an artist with a very personal style and where I could move freely without an end goal with a work and a very open process that within the same trend of work there are different stages or motivations. The main motivation is the inspiration and the curiosity of being, the flow and go looking for something that has been granted by the idea or a real motivation, where I am rather expressing myself as I really am, it ends up being your own way of being or feeling an artist, your true personality more mental, creative, curious, sentimental, that comes from the depths of the inner self. I capture my essence in a very automatic creative way. The works are like anecdotes or stories from a personal diary, it is like an automatic writing as the surrealists did, the works are very psychological and expressive of my moods, my thoughts and doubts, represented by these modern hieroglyphs and pictograms related to the ancient and current symbols or elements, characters of the consumer era that everyone can recognize. Creating a cosmogony, a unique and personal universe.
