From the Director

We

learned this year about life after the centennial campaign. Those festivities and all the attention they generated now stand as part of our history. Forward we go. Conventional wisdom might have predicted we’d step back to catch our breath on the philanthropic side, but thanks to the support of so many across the University School of Nashville community, there’s good news to share from the start of this next generation on Edgehill.

Our culture of philanthropy is almost as old as the school itself, reaching back to the original Rockefeller Foundation gift to construct Peabody Demonstration School in 1924. But it really was not until the transition from PDS to USN in 1975 that constituents were asked to give in support of our historic mission. As a result, we’ve counted more on Annual Fund contributions and seen permanent endowment resources grow from a very modest start. It’s all a coming of age story.

More recently, we’ve made time for these longer-term conversations, without losing sight of the continued daily importance of the Annual Fund in keeping us running at our best. The combination of efforts in those two complementary directions is the story of the year just past and the years we’re planning. You’ll see highlights of that story documented, as well they should be, across the pages of this publication.

We are, at our very core, here to create opportunities, to make possible that which probably would not have happened otherwise. For students, that means the chance to learn with young people they may never otherwise have met, from backgrounds as interesting as our growing city is proving to be. For faculty, it means teaching in an environment blending autonomy and collegiality, where excellence is appreciated, expected, and abundant. And for the rest of us, it’s a chance to help open those doors and see the difference we each can make.

Families who enroll in USN are confident their students will receive an excellent education here. Faculty are confident they will receive the tools necessary to shape innovative curriculum here. Students are confident they will have a variety of co-curricular opportunities to find their niches here. And we’ve reframed this annual publication as an all-encompassing report on the generosity of our donors and volunteers who make all of this possible as the world changes.

The philanthropic culture of PDS/USN is strengthened by countless volunteer hours in preparation for parents to host a half-dozen fundraising events, hundreds of phone calls alumni and parents make to their peers to solicit gifts, financial commitments of all sizes from families and friends, and the unwavering generosity of faculty and staff who choose to invest in the school where they already share their talents and skills each day. We value and prioritize relationships with these philanthropists as they help create the environment to guarantee a long and secure future for the school we all know and love.

The george peabody Society

N

amed in memory of the father of modern philanthropy whose education fund planted the seeds for University School of Nashville, the George Peabody Society recognizes our most loyal donors, who have faithfully invested in the school every year for at least a quarter century. These families, which include trustees, parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty, and friends of USN, have given gifts of all sizes over the years. Their commitment inspires us all.

Membership in the George Peabody Society has nearly quadrupled in the past five years from 19 to 70 donors.

Five members are new this year. The longest consecutive giving streak is 34 years in a row, and three families achieved this milestone: Weaver Barksdale, Samuel Dillard ’56 and Allison Dillard, and Allis Dale and John Gillmor. And we’re pleased to share alumni are more than one third of George Peabody Society members.

The annual fund

T

he Annual Fund is a critical stream of philanthropy, accounting for 6 percent of University School of Nashville’s operating budget. It broadly supports faculty development, need-based financial aid, academic programming, visual and performing arts, athletics and lifelong wellness, and campus and environmental stewardship.

We are thankful for the thousands of alumni, parents, faculty and staff, grandparents, and friends who gave to the Annual Fund this year. When combined, these gifts exceeded $1.48 million—a new record for USN. Additionally, we are especially grateful for the many volunteers whose emails, phone calls, and conversations about giving made our success possible.

Faculty experiences inspire great teaching and learning History comes to life in Ireland

s

eventh Grade Social Studies Teacher Doug Brown, French Teacher Martha Moore, and Head of Middle School Jeff Greenfield crossed the Atlantic Ocean with 20 middle and high school students to study the history and culture of the Kingdom of Leinster.

“We went to Ireland because I found a book about the conquest of Ireland in the 1100s by the Normans, and everything else that has happened in Ireland—religiously and culturally—is because of that historical moment in time,” Brown said.

Students visited the Carlow and Kilkenny castles, centers of Norman occupation and Irish resistance, and Waterford, site of the first landing and battle between Norman forces under the leadership of Richard “Strongbow” DeClare and Norse warriors loyal to the High King of Ireland. In Dublin, they toured the National Gallery, Christ Church Cathedral, and the site of the Easter Uprising.

Most memorable for students were their two-night homestays with families in Carlow. For Brown, he’s been able to add color and details for his lessons in seventh-grade social studies.

“There were many interesting parts to the trip but I think the big highlights were the Neolithic structures and the people who built them, the very deeply rooted religious beliefs and troubles, and the ancient game of hurling. I look forward to adding these topics and games to my Middle Ages Unit,” Brown said.

Summer institute connects progressive education, technology

L

ower School Math Coordinator Christy Plummer had an opportunity to visit Brightworks in San Francisco as a member of USN’s Strategic Planning committee and came away “inspired by the vision, the practice, and the place.” She returned to the 7-year-old K-12 experiential school in 2018 for a three-and-a-half day institute designed for educators to learn the Brightworks school methodology of integrated, engagement-based learning through a mix of pedagogical discussions, hands-on collaborations, and open and honest question-and-answer sessions about big-picture planning and everyday practicalities. During the Curriculum Development Workshop, Plummer worked with a team of Brightworks educators to understand the key components of learner-led curriculum that reinforce the importance of deep thinking, empathy, and creativity, among other worthy virtues.

“For me, the summer institute became a place to imagine possibilities and dream big about educational experiences we’d like to create for children and to plan the steps that will move us in that direction,” Plummer said. “The amazing educators who gathered for this event added to the magic, and our conversations filled me with gratitude and inspiration. It was an opportunity to reconnect with USN’s progressive education roots but in today’s high-tech world.”

Among her takeaways were to truly value students’ questions by setting aside time to explore and investigate those inquiries as well as to travel beyond USN’s Edgehill campus regularly because the school building is a small part of a larger urban learning environment.

Students manage feelings through Social and Emotional Learning

L

ower School Counselor Shanna Kraai and Third Grade Teacher Sarah Wiley traveled to San Mateo, California to attend workshops at The Institute for Social and Emotional Learning. University School of Nashville has put increasing emphasis on students gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities to understand their emotions, manage those feelings, and feel empathy for classmates. The summer workshops gave the counselor and educator the opportunities to experience a range of SEL activities and also understand the research and rationale that underpin them.

“It was great to have a classroom teacher join me and learn about the SEL practices,” Kraai said. “I use the ideas and activities daily in my counseling lessons in classrooms as well as share relevant information with staff.

Our hope is to deepen our conversations around these important life skills through our assemblies, morning meetings, counseling support, and everyday conversations.”

Already, Kraai has incorporated what they learned in California with monthly themes, like mindfulness and responsibility, as a part of Lower School’s Social Emotional Learning curriculum. The breathing tool has become a favorite practice for students. They touch their thumbs and index fingers together as if holding a tape measure and slowly pull their fingertips together and apart with each inhale and exhale. Other practices like the listening tool and quiet/safe place tool have made their way into the SEL toolbox at USN.

Faculty gain skills to better teach Spanish as a second language

P

rofessional development can be as simple yet rewarding as watching an admired colleague in action, as Sibley Kelly and Rhonda Prater-Gelinas did while they watched “superstar” teachers work with students in a fishbowl lab. They traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio for the International Forum on Language Teaching, a conference designed for K-12 instructors of world languages to align their instructional approaches of second language acquisition with ways that best fit with brain research. “iFLT Fluency Matters 2018 was a spectacular conference that allowed me to be a teacher, student, and observer. I learned new ideas and concepts to share with my students on how to learn a second language with much less stress, more emphasis on the language itself, and less emphasis on the dynamics of grammar. I left the conference feeling inspired and supplied with tools to use in my classroom,” said Prater-Gelinas, who teaches High School Spanish.

“Although I have been incorporating Comprehensible Input in my lesson plans for years, now the dynamics and importance of it are clearer to me, and this year my goal is to include at least one new CI activity in my classes each week, like personalized questions and answers and self-selected reading.”

Kelly, who teaches Spanish in the Middle School, attended sessions focused on reading in the target language, which she says is the most effective way to acquire language. Now she will teach beginner novels and graphic novels to her Middle School students for the first time.

“The sessions were instrumental in helping me learn how to approach novels, pick out which novels will be best, and consider how to teach reading, something I’ve never been trained to do as a world language teacher. My book orders are in and I am ready to give this a try,” she said.

Meador grant sends science teacher on European tour

W

ith support from the Helen Meador Travel Grant, Eighth Grade Science Teacher Pamela Malinowki traveled to Italy and Switzerland to visit areas of cultural and historical importance and study how they relate to modern science. She found science in every facet of her trip, including live data collection during a tour of the European Organization for Nuclear Research as well as in the simple levers, pulleys, and ramps at the bottom of the Roman Colosseum.

In Rome and Florence, she was able to tour a number of historic sites, such as the famous hydrochronometer at Pincio.

Created in 1893, this water clock is still working today. She also visited the House of Medici, where Galileo was imprisoned during the last eight years of his life, and the Campo de’ Fiori, a plaza where Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for his heretical belief that stars were distant suns with their own planets. A statue of Bruno still stands in this spot.

“The statue faces the Vatican and, in my opinion, is a statement of how science and religion in modern times seem to oppose each other,” Malinowski said.

During her visits to Pompeii and the Alps town of Zermatt, Malinowski learned about clean living practices both in ancient and modern times. The archaeological sites of Pompeii show streets built on inclines to help waste move through them, with large stepping stones to allow pedestrians to cross over easily.

In the mountain town of Zermatt, all vehicles including taxis, buses, and work trucks are fully electric. As a result, the air is noticeably cleaner than in cities with gas-powered vehicles.

One highlight of Malinowski’s trip was a visit to the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva. There she learned about the WMO’s global initiatives to combat climate change and received materials she said she hopes “to create case studies for [her] students to delve into how weather can impact the lives of those around the world, rather than just in the United States.”

Manning Finds art immersed in Australian culture

h

igh School Theater Director Jim Manning toured Australia this past summer to attend shows, view galleries, and chat with leaders in immersive theater, much of which is coming out of Melbourne. This style takes lots of different forms; usually, the audience moves around to discover the show on their own, Manning said.

“I have been blown away with the amount of art this city creates, both in high-brow and more experimental settings,” he said.

Immersive art he experienced included Melbourne’s highway sculptures best viewed when passing by at 80 kilometers per hour, Sydney’s light displays on the sides of buildings and inside tunnels, and the Australian Centre for Moving Image, which was running an immersive exhibit on the film versions of “Alice in Wonderland.”

He spoke with the educational leader at Malthouse Theatre, a group that focuses on shows written by authors from disadvantaged groups, including indigenous people. There he learned how the educational system in Australia requires students to interact with the arts through creation and viewing of plays.

Manning saw “Brother’s Wreck” onstage at Malthouse Theatre, a play about a family’s struggle with death and addressing the problem of Aboriginal suicide.

Manning also was able to meet with immersive theater directors to learn how the audience can follow different characters and explore the space as well as how Australian theater produces pieces in public locations and without actors.

“The range of shows being explored in Melbourne was pretty mind-blowing. I have produced one immersive show myself, but have been wondering how that might work in a school environment. Oddly, the one show I saw that was immersive involved a cast of 8-year-olds in environments that they had created. I didn’t even realize it was going to be immersive theater until I was in the experience,” he said. “This gave me some interesting ideas on how the Art and Theater Departments might work together to help students bring their visions to life. It certainly gave me an interesting moment to see the world through a child’s perspective.”

un by hundreds of USN parent and family volunteers, coordinated and overseen by USNA Office Manager Debra Alberts, University School of Nashville Association serves as the school’s vibrant service and fundraising arm. Events such as Fall Book Frenzy, Artclectic, Evening Classes, and Music Night welcomed visitors from the broader Nashville community to campus and raised over $150,000 for USN. On-campus programs including Tiger Club for athletics, Tiger Arts Patrons, and Bonus Bucks brought in more than $20,000, bringing the total contributions from USNA to nearly $180,000 in 2017-2018.

Volunteer support a backbone for life at USN

B

eyond fundraising for the school, University School of Nashville Association is the welcome wagon for families new to USN. It is how parent Grace Jackson met her new friends just days after relocating from Virginia and why she often can be found putting her organizational skills to good use in the Hassenfeld Library and Lower School lost and found.

“When we first moved to Nashville, we were fresh off the plane, without a house because of the crazy real estate market, and the one stable thing in our lives was USN. Our things were in storage and we lived in corporate housing, but my kids were happy and safe, so it was natural for me to keep coming back. I volunteered as much as I could,” said Jackson, mom of Quincy ’29 and Maxwell ’27. The former teacher jumped into life at USN, served as an Annual Fund new parent co-chair with her husband, Vince, helped with events including the Fall Book Frenzy and Music Night, and began shelving books in the library twice a week.

“There is always a way to give back. It’s not always about the financial giving. Parent involvement and time are just as valuable,” she said. Through USNA she met parent Tonia Klein, and the two began taking Evening Classes together and even organizing the lost and found for a few hours every other week. Donning disposable gloves and spraying disinfectant, the duo purges souring lunch bags, sorts and folds clothes, and returns labeled items to students. They even brought in a clothing rack and laminated signs to organize the lost and found by category, helping items be easily retrievable.

“I love interacting with the kids and the energy of the school. We truly believe this is the best place and that is why we give back with our time,” Jackson said.

A REFLection from USNA President Susan Schoenecker

T

he weight of USNA is carried by upwards of 600 volunteers and USN supporters with varying levels of affiliation with the school. They are led by a president who at times may appear to be a school staff member with the volume of organizing and time it takes to put on a concert or coordinate refreshments for visiting grandparents and special friends. Susan Schoenecker’s road to USNA presidency began with sorting and organizing books for Fall Book Frenzy when her son, Tyler ’20, enrolled in Middle School. Daughter, Abigail ’22, joined USN soon thereafter.

“I loved being involved where my kids were because I would get a different perspective from what they told me and learn what was really going on. I got to know their friends and build community beyond their teachers,” she said. “USNA was my way of getting myself out there and meeting other people. USNA is the one opportunity where parents get to work with people from the entire school—in first grade and High School or a business that I would not have known about. You want to be involved with what your kids are doing and have a part in their experiences.”

The highlight of her term in office is not in the volume of philanthropic support of her output but rather on the “many volunteers that did so many things for USN.” “The work we do is important because it shows faculty and staff how much we value them when we are willing to give our time and energy,” she said. “Everybody should volunteer. I really think that when you’re volunteering it doesn’t have to be a lot. The littlest bit is a big deal.”

Horizons at usn

In

its fifth year, Horizons at USN immersed 76 public school students from grades 1-5 in academic enrichment opportunities, taking them on field trips from Edgehill Avenue throughout Nashville and even to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

With a $250,000 challenge grant from the Care Foundation of America Inc., the summer camp launched its middle school program in 2017-2018. The rising fifth graders, who have been with Horizons at USN since the program’s inception in 2014, participated in USN Summer Camps. Experiencing traditional day camps alongside students from private and public schools across Middle Tennessee gave them a “diversity of experiences with a diversity of people for them to try something new that they never had before,” said Executive Director Sam Jackson.

Other highlights this year were a fun-filled water day on the back field and an onsite reading clinic with 30 volunteers, including Vanderbilt University graduate students as well as USN students, alumni, faculty, and staff.

With the continuous philanthropic support of its donors, Horizons at USN will reach capacity in 2021 with 120 students headed to first through eighth grades. Through daily lessons in swimming, math, science, reading, and writing as well as a rotation of arts, sports, and computer programming, the academic enrichment program works to combat the summer slope of learning loss. Over six weeks during the summer, students grew an average of two to three months in their reading and math skills and became proficient swimmers. During the academic year, Horizons at USN hosts additional programming for students and parents each month.
