What does our favourite Disney Princess say about us? Dr Robyn Muir investigates how Disney Princesses have evolved since Snow White first graced our screens in 1937.

In her research, Robyn explores how femininity is represented in Disney films, merchandising, marketing and theme park experiences, and what this means for audiences’ understanding of gender.

Robyn explains: “You can see Disney Princesses in everyday life. Young people can dress like princesses, learn with princesses and even sleep in princess duvets. They are framed as role models to young people. This means we can use media like Disney Princess films to start conversations about important societal issues and build media literacy skills.”

spent my placement at Williams Racing in the Heritage team, which looks after a vast collection of Williams Formula 1 cars.

I worked with many departments and got to know over 200 people. My transferable competencies, such as teamworking, improved the most, but I also gained design skills and learned about practical engineering.

One of my proudest moments was when we ran one of our heritage cars at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It was an event we worked towards for months and seeing it all go well made me feel proud for our entire team.

The other was being recognised for my work contributions during my placement with a ‘Brand Ambassador’ award, which I was presented with during Williams Racing’s Early Careers Awards night.”

FOUNDATION YEAR

A foundation year can develop your skills and make it easier to get started at university. It is an extra year of study at the start of your course that leads into a full degree programme.

You’ll learn about your chosen subject, develop your study skills and get used to university life. On successful completion of your foundation year, you’ll be ready to progress to the first year of your degree course.

As a foundation year student, you’ll be a full student at the University and part of our community. You’ll have access to all our campus facilities and support.

BRAINWAVES

Surrey’s dedication to research-led education has led to a recent breakthrough in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a condition affecting one in 20 children worldwide. Challenges associated with ADHD include school dropout, unemployment, and criminality.

The most common treatment is currently medication, but a study co-led by Professor Roi Cohen Kadosh, head of the School of Psychology, found that painless, safe and non-invasive brain stimulation could significantly improve symptoms.

Professor Kadosh commented: “The results of this study increase our confidence that, in the future, non-invasive brain stimulation could provide an alternative to medication as a treatment pathway for ADHD.”

All accommodation is self-catered and over 50% of rooms have en-suite shower and toilet facilities.

Most accommodation is mixed-sex, but you can apply to live in a single-sex flat. You can also apply for quiet or alcohol-free accommodation. Requests are not guaranteed.

We’ve invested £1.7m to upgrade and expand facilities across the Department of Music and Media. In addition to three professional recording studios, including a concert venue, the department has a new film and TV studio, critical listening room, five edit suites, a creative music technology performance-workshop room, a fully upgraded synthesiser laboratory and a 24/7-access student computer lab.

Guildford School of Acting has three theatres (Bellairs, PATS and Rex Doyle), a 128-capacity studio space, 15 dance and rehearsal studios (facilities include sound system, ballet barres, sprung floors, keyboard/piano), 10 tutorial/ practice rooms, a scenic studio workshop, a technical workshop and stage management production office, extensive costume stores and workrooms, a Mac lab and up-to-the-minute black magic film cameras

The Lakeside Restaurant is a student training kitchen and restaurant in our School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, offering immersive training in management and culinary skills

Our School of Literature and Languages features a new podcast room and a publishing room, and our interpreting labs have the latest technology from BUK solutions which offer ISO-certified solutions for simultaneous interpretation of multilingual events

SUSTAINABILITY AT SURREY

Surrey was ranked 9th in the UK and 46th in the world by the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings, which assesses universities’ performances against the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

NET ZERO CARBON EMISSIONS BY 2030

Our Energy Reduction Working Group (led by the Sustainability Team) is working on over 50 projects to reduce our total energy consumption. These include improving building efficiency, working to increase on-site renewable energy generation, and continuing to expand the number of electric vehicles in our fleet.

EXPANDING OUR SOLAR POWER

Solar generation forms a big part of our net zero mission. Our new solar facility, being developed in partnership with SSE Energy Solutions, will increase our on-site renewable energy to 28% of total annual demand. The project will include wildflower planting, nature corridors, hedgerow expansion and bug hotels.

GOLD STANDARD HEDGEHOG SCHEME

EXAMINING A NEW, FLEXIBLE WAY TO HARVEST SOLAR POWER

Surrey researchers are focusing on exciting new perovskite solar cell technologies, which could lead to solar cells that are lighter, more flexible and better performing than traditional ones, potentially helping the UK reach its 2050 carbon-neutral goal. Our scientists have also discovered a coating for this new solar cell technology that could help slash the cost of solar panels.

OUR RESEARCH INTO SOILLESS BIOMASS ENERGY

Surrey researchers, led by Dr Zoe Harris, are developing a cultivation method that can quickly grow crops without soil to create biomass energy. Producing heat, power and liquid transport fuels from biomass instead of fossil fuels could offer a wide range of environmental and socio-economic benefits.

Our borehole for clean drinking water at Stag Hill campus now provides up to 1 million litres of water a day, increasing the resilience of our supply, and reducing costs and carbon emissions. It also provides teaching and research opportunities.

Our next borehole project, on Manor Park campus, aims to supply the student village, vet school and clinical research buildings.

GREEN FLAG AWARD

Our Stag Hill campus has a range of nature sites and is home to a variety of wildlife, from bee orchids to hedgehogs. Our green spaces are havens for staff, students, and our local community. Not only does our team maintain our beautiful grounds, they also work on improving biodiversity and integrating sustainable practices. This was recognised and celebrated by our Green Flag Award from the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

SUSTAINABLE LABS AT SURREY

LEAF sets out 44 criteria for lab users to improve their sustainability. Our labs and technicians are engaging keenly with the scheme, and several have already started

to progress towards the Bronze LEAF award. Changing the operating temperature for ultra-low temperature freezers (of which the University has hundreds) by dropping from –80 to –70 is another significant improvement. While the change does not affect research, it does reduce carbon emissions by 25% for each freezer.

GREEN APPLE ENVIRONMENT AWARD

We have been awarded a Green Apple Environment Award for our circular and closed-loop recycling process at the University. This award recognises environmental best practice across the world and highlights the initiative and drive of our Horticulture Team to implement more sustainable practices.

Enactus is an international organisation that helps students to engage in social action and social enterprise. Their new project ‘Scorchers Go Green’ aims to educate young children on the importance of sustainability and the impact of climate change. They wish to plant 1,000 trees in the Surrey area by the end of the academic year.

Surrey Garden Society manages a community garden and collaborates with the Estates and Facilities team to help make the campus green. They plant trees and flowers, grow fruit and vegetables and even keep bees.

Surrey Business Society organised a ‘Sustainability in Business’ series of panels and discussions with guest speakers from a variety of businesses and sectors, including: Samsung, OLIO, MUD Jeans and UpCircle.

Surrey Surf Club created ‘Surrey Surf’s Sustainable Swaps’, an IGTV series highlighting the everyday swaps we can make to help the planet and move towards a plastic-free, zero-waste lifestyle. They’ve covered bottles, earbuds and face pads, dental care and hair products.

People & Planet Society launched the ‘Red Racoon Food Co-operative’ in collaboration with the Students’ Union, selling affordable plastic-free food on campus.

SOLVING A STICKY ISSUE

When it comes to recycling packaging materials like glass or cardboard, sticky residue from adhesives can block water systems and even damage recycling machinery.

At Surrey we’re helping industry and communities to improve their recycling efficiency. Our chemistry and physics researchers have invented a type of adhesive which can dissolve easily during the recycling process. Using a new degradable polymer invented at Surrey, labels can be detached up to 10 times faster than with traditional adhesives –providing a more effective recycling solution.

Working on the concept in a project funded by the Malaysian Rubber Board, PhD student Rohani Abu Bakar says: “This brings us one step closer to reaching our sustainability goals on an industrial scale.” surrey.ac.uk/research-surrey

OUR TUITION FEES

UK undergraduate students will be charged £9,250 per year for 2024-25 entry. The same is true for courses that include a foundation year. The fee for a Professional Training year for 2024-25 entry is £1,850, and for work or study abroad for the full year it is £1,385 when supported by the Turing Scheme.

STUDENT LOANS

As a UK undergraduate student, you may be eligible for financial support through Student Finance England, Wales or Northern Ireland (depending on where you are applying from) or the Student Advice Agency Scotland. If you are applying to Student Finance England, you may be eligible for the Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan.

The Government loans you the money to pay your tuition fees and cover some of your living costs

You pay the Government back, in instalments, after you graduate

Your repayments are in proportion to your income

You only start repaying when you earn over a certain amount, currently £25,000

Surrey’s new School of Medicine will contribute to our One Health, One Medicine multidisciplinary approach to health research and education.

The School will offer an independent Graduate Entry Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS)*, developed in collaboration with the University of Exeter Medical School.

THREE-YEAR DEGREE

Most degree courses in England take three years of study to complete. It’s possible to complete the majority of our courses in three years, which will let you start your career or move on to further study quickly.

FOUR-YEAR DEGREE WITH A PROFESSIONAL TRAINING YEAR

Many of our degree courses include a Professional Training placement, where you’ll usually spend one year working in an organisation to develop your skills, make connections and get a taste of what it’s like to work in your chosen industry. You may also have the option of pursuing a study exchange abroad during your placement year.

INTEGRATED MASTERS DEGREE

Many of our subject areas give you the option of studying for a degree course with an integrated masters year. This means that you’ll graduate with a masters-level degree. 2. GET INVOLVED

Your grades are an important factor, but we also look at who you are as a person. We are interested to hear about community involvement, part-time jobs, interests, hobbies and sports.

3. GET EXPERIENCE

It’s a great idea to get some experience in your chosen field. It shows us your interest and helps your personal statement. You’ll be able to talk about your knowledge and why you want to pursue your subject.

4. ENGAGE
