SCHOOL OF VETERINARY MEDICINE

Our School of Veterinary Medicine is an established, accredited vet school with buildings designed by leading architects and housing world-class equipment.

Our facilities include our Veterinary Clinical Skills Centre, where students get hands-on experience with animals; our Veterinary Pathology Centre, one of the largest and most sophisticated in Europe; and our main teaching facility, which houses our lecture theatres and seminar rooms, as well as labs and collaboration spaces. Students are encouraged to practise their skills out of hours in our clinical skills centres and can simulate reallife scenarios in Fledglings, our fully equipped on-site veterinary practice.

Professionalism and employability are central to the programme we offer. Our students gain invaluable experience out on placement in their final year and throughout the course are given opportunities to network and plan for their future. At our annual Careers Fair, we encourage students to connect with leading professionals, learn about diverse career paths within the veterinary field and gain insights into the evolving landscape of veterinary medicine.

We aim to inspire and educate veterinary professionals who will advance veterinary medicine to meet the needs of a changing world.

Our curriculum

Our hands-on curriculum is designed in collaboration with our partner veterinary practices and scientific research institutes, so that our students learn to meet the diverse needs of companion, production, equine, laboratory animals, and exotic and wildlife species. This begins early as students gain animal handling experience in their first few weeks.

In their final year, students complete seven intramural clinical placements, with one of our 100 UK-based partner veterinary practices. Highly trained clinical instruction mentors provide support to every student on work placement.

Opportunities are provided for final-year students to work in a network of clinical practices or facilities which include:

• Small animal primary care practice

• Referral practice and emergency and critical care

• Production animals

• Equine general practice

• Veterinary public health and pathology

Digital innovation and big data

“My time at Surrey empowered me, instilled me with confidence and humbled me too. I’m now a better leader, team player and educator – that’s what happens when you learn from the best! I now have a qualification that sets me apart from the crowd and wonderful memories to look back on. A huge benefit of the course was the small cohort. I always felt I was given a lot of individual attention. The facilities blew my mind (I’m not exaggerating).”

“I loved everything about my course! It was well structured and everything I learnt was relevant; from anatomy and physiology, to practical teaching. The course was also very interactive with a lot of contact time. Every aspect was designed to make us clinically ready graduates from day one.”
