A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT St. Thomas has a unique hockey tradition. Our first men’s hockey team took the ice almost 100 years ago. St. Thomas is ranked first in Division III all-time victories and was the first to surpass 1,000 wins. Our women’s program started in 1998 and we have finished third or better in the MIAC for the past 15 years and made an appearance in the Frozen Four in the 2013-14 campaign. I am excited for yet another unforgettable season of hockey here at St. Thomas.

I also am very proud of the attitude our players and coaches bring to competition. I have had the opportunity to cheer for men’s and women’s teams in many of our 22 varsity sports, culminating with the NCAA Division III football and men’s basketball championship games in 2015-16. The players and coaches always impress me with their sense of gratitude. They are grateful to be competing and for our support as their fans.

SPORTING A MISSION At St. Thomas, we view athletics more broadly than wins and losses. We view athletics as part of our mission of student development and learning. Athletics is integrated here – a venue to form our young men and women with valuable, lifelong lessons such as unselfishness, discipline, care for others, teamwork and experiencing the thrill of being part of something bigger than themselves.

Athletics Director Steve Fritz and his coaches get credit for this. They emphasize balance and the well-rounded student-athlete. On occasion, students will have to miss practice because of an assignment or take a test on the road. The presence of the classroom is respected by coaches and players alike. Coaches are as likely to tout a player’s GPA, internship or job offer as his or her athletic success.

Athletics also fits into our mission of creating community.

There is a great atmosphere when our hockey teams take the ice at Saint Thomas Ice Arena. Students, faculty and staff are joined in the stands by alumni and their families, all proudly wearing their purple.

I embrace striving to win our conference and play at the national level. But more importantly, I want to see our student-athletes well prepared for the next chapter of their lives as strong scholars and great people. That’s what makes a St. Thomas experience stand out.

UNIVERSITY OF ST. THOMAS Archbishop John Ireland founded St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary in 1885 in what once was described as a farmer’s field “far removed from town.”

That fledgling institution, then home to 62 students and five faculty members, has evolved into the University of St. Thomas. It is Minnesota’s largest independent university and is located in the heart of the Twin Cities area, with approximately 10,000 students and 1,800 faculty and staff members.

In its first decade, St. Thomas was a high school, college and seminary, with students enrolled in the classical or theological departments. St. Thomas Academy, The Saint Paul Seminary and the College of St. Thomas eventually formed their own identities and missions, housed on separate campuses.

After 92 years of all-male undergraduate enrollment, the college became coeducational in 1977. The growth of graduate programs led to a decision to rename the institution the University of St. Thomas in 1990 and to build a Minneapolis campus two years later. There’s also a campus in Rome, Italy, which was affiliated in 2000.

Students today are enrolled in one of seven academic colleges or schools: College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, Leadership and Counseling, Opus College of Business, School of Engineering, School of Law, School of Social Work and The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity. All of the graduate programs within these divisions have accreditation from national or international associations.

In 2013, Dr. Julie Sullivan became the first layperson and the first woman to serve as president.

She spearheaded the development of a new strategic plan in 2014. It outlines the university’s priorities for the future, which are described as “bold and expansive” but continues to reinforce the St. Thomas mission: 4

In the Directors’ Cup standings, a measurement of a school’s athletic performance among all sports, we finished 17th among 439 Division III schools and we’ve placed in the top 20 nine of the past 10 years.

While we’ve always strived to be good, the commitment made by the Board of Trustees more than 15 years ago to be the best we can be in Division III was a turning point. The Department of Athletics is fortunate to have great support throughout the university. We know that having great academics, music and athletics, with a strong sense of mission, gives St. Thomas a vibrancy students are looking for.

Our coaches work hard to recruit students who can do well in class and on the field. Last school year, our student-athletes received 131 Academic All-MIAC honors (above 3.50 cumulative grade-point average), including five individuals voted CoSIDA Academic All-America. Given the quality of our coaching staff, it doesn’t surprise me that we have done well in recruiting top student-athletes.

ATHLETICS AT ST. THOMAS People may wonder what has kept me at St. Thomas for parts of six decades – as a student, admissions counselor, basketball coach and athletic director. The answer is: knowing that we’re always going to try to be successful at anything we do.

In 25 years as athletic director, I’ve seen us develop national-level teams across men’s and women’s athletics.

In 2015-16 alone, St. Thomas had eight sports place in the top 10 nationally, led by our national champion men’s basketball team and an NCAA runner-up football finish. Since 2009, 12 different Tommie sports have combined to post 27 top-five NCAA finishes. St. Thomas runners and swimmers also won five NCAA individual or relay championships in 2016.

A shining example is our head hockey coaches Jeff Boeser and Tom Palkowski. For Boeser, the 201718 season marks his eighth season as the Tommies men’s head coach, and he’s been an integral part of St. Thomas’ current streak of 35 consecutive winning seasons. Palkowski has guided the St. Thomas women to a 65-percent winning record in his first ten seasons as head coach.

But I have always told students that a college experience is meant to encompass more than just playing a game. They should enroll here as students first and athletes second. The vast majority of them do, and in the process they evolve into remarkable young men and women who represent their university well and emerge ready to become leaders in our community.

Along the way, if they are fortunate enough to be part of a championship team, they will find the experience all the sweeter!

Volleyball Becomes National Force Tommie volleyball advanced to the eight-team national tournament finals in 2010, 2011 and 2012 after not qualifying during the first 33 years in program history.

The third time was a charm as the 2012 team won NCAA gold to cap a 40-1 season.

St. Thomas is 103-18 over the last five seasons.

Coach of the Year Glenn Caruso was voted National Coach of the Year in Division III football by Liberty Mutual in 2010, 2011 and 2012. As a result, Liberty Mutual has donated $60,000 to the UST Alumni Association and $150,000 to the coach’s charities.

Basketball Emerges onto National Scene St. Thomas became the first MIAC men’s basketball team to win an NCAA championship in 2011 and then again in 2016. In the last nine years alone Tommie teams have reached the women’s or men’s national quarterfinals or beyond seven times.

Diamond Dandies St. Thomas baseball (six) and softball (four) have combined to claim 10 top-three NCAA team finishes in the last 19 seasons. That includes NCAA championships in 2001 and 2009 in baseball, and 2004 and 2005 in softball.

A COMMITMENT TO SUCCESS ­ t. Thomas offers an expansive program of varsity S intercollegiate athletics. The 22 varsity sports include 11 each for men and women. St. Thomas is a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and the NCAA Division III. The university’s athletics department seeks balance among its breadth of programs. At St. Thomas, the term“student-athlete” is truly meaningful. Athletes are first and foremost students.

They seek excellence not only in athletics but in the classroom, and to strike a balance.

St. Thomas takes pride in the balance among its 22 varsity programs. There are no “minor” sports – each program makes unique contributions and is treated equally within the department.

Evidence of this commitment is the men’s and women’s successes in their quest for the MIAC All-Sports Championship.

The award is based on the composite order of finish within the league in each of the varsity sports. The women’s program has claimed the title 25 of the last 31 years. The men’s program has won the all-sport honor 28 of the last 37 years and has finished first or second 41 of the last 44 years. St. Thomas has won at least one conference team championship in all 22 sports in which it has fielded teams. It has an MIAC-best 412 all-time conference regular-season championships.

St. Thomas also has been well represented with national academic awards. Tommie student-athletes have received 100 CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Tommie football’s 20 Academic All-Americas since 2000 rank in the top 15 of all college football programs.

St. Thomas had recorded top-five NCAA team finishes in 21 different sports. It’s one of a select few Division III institutions (and the lone Minnesota college or university) to win NCAA team titles in eight different sports. The Tommies are the lone Minnesota school to win an NCAA outdoor track relay crown.

Tommie athletes have won individual NCAA championships 57 times.

The St. Thomas staff and facilities reflect the program’s focus.

In addition to its athletic director and associate athletic director, St. Thomas has full-time positions in athletic training; equipment manager; facilities; sports information; and strength and conditioning.

The on-campus facilities feature a 5,000-seat outdoor stadium with new FieldTurf and bleachers; a newly resurfaced eightlane outdoor track; and the $52 million Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex, which opened in 2010 with an arena, new field house, swimming pool, locker rooms, and weight and fitness rooms.

Student-athletes who value both academics and athletics and who want to be a part of a program that values each sport and athlete should explore the St. Thomas admissions process.

Streak Grows in MIAC All-sport St. Thomas swept the conference men’s and women’s allsport championships in 201617, the 10th year in a row it captured both. The 2016-17 Tommies won or shared a record 15 of a possible 22 MIAC regular-season titles.

Over the last nine years at St. Thomas – out of 108 total seasons in the 12 traditional team sports of football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, hockey, tennis, baseball and softball – Tommie teams have had 104 winning seasons; one .500 mark; and only three losing seasons.

St. Thomas has had 16 topfive NCAA team finishes over the last four years alone, led by the 2015-16’s NCAA title by men’s hoops and national runner-up finish in football.

St. Thomas placed 17th out of 440 schools in the D-III Directors’ Cup scoring – the ninth time in the last 10 years St. Thomas has placed in the top 20.

Out of 1,000-plus NCAA institutions at the Division I, II and III levels, St. Thomas is still the only one to have secured at least one NCAA team championship in baseball, softball, volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball.

TOMMIES TAKE 17TH IN D-III DIRECTORS’ CUP Led by eight top-20 NCAA team finishes, St. Thomas placed 17th out of 439 institutions in the final 2016-17 Learfield Division III Directors’ Cup all-sport standings.

Among Minnesota institutions at all NCAA levels, only St. Thomas and Minnesota State Mankato (Division II) have finished in the top 26 in each of the last 10 years.

This marks the ninth time in the last 10 years that St. Thomas has finished in the top 20 nationally (top-5 percent) of all Division III instutitions. St. Thomas’ 22 year average finish is 18th place.

The Tommies also had another impressive year in MIAC competition as they swept the conference men’s and women’s all-sport titles for the 10th year in a row.

The Tommies had four top-five national team placings: men's soccer, women's basketball, football and women's hockey. They scored in 12 of their 22 sports to compile 588.5 points.

St. Thomas tied its own record set one year earlier as it claimed 18 of 33 conference team championships or co-championships.

That included a record-tying 15 of 22 regular season, and three of 11 playoff crowns.

Williams (Mass.) took first for the 20th time in the 22-year history of the competition. The Ephs were followed in the top four by Washington (Mo.), Tufts (Mass.) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

St. Thomas, which finished just 80 points behind 11th-place MIT, was fourth among nine institutions from Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota that finished in the top 35.

St. Thomas was first among four MIAC programs to place in this year's top 100, with Gustavus (53rd), Carleton (74th) and Augsburg (94th).

The Directors' Cup competition was initiated 22 years ago to measure institutions' overall program strength and balance. Its scoring formula assigns points for an institution's team placings in national championship competitions and playoffs.

St. Thomas is the lone conference school -- and one of just 10 national institutions -- to place in the top 10 percent (top 40) all 22 years of the competition.

ST. THOMAS WOMEN’S HOCKEY WELCOME TO THE 2016-17 SEASON! Our program has much to celebrate.

We’re coming off another successful year as MIAC playoff champions, and we turn our attention to new challenges this winter.

This marks the 20th season of Tommie

women’s hockey, and its 15th season at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

We lost an All-America player and three other regular contributors, and we must fill those roles on and off the ice.

We welcome new assistant coaches Marty Sertich and Alexandra Kleinhuizen.

They bring excellent resumes as players and coaches.

WHAT’S NEW? St. Thomas women’s hockey coach Tom Palkowski has added two assistant coaches with impressive playing and coaching resumes – Marty Sertich and Alexandra Zebro Kleinhuizen.

A Roseville, Minnesota, native, Sertich retired in 2016 after a 10year professional playing career in Europe and in the American Hockey League. He was college hockey’s Hobey Baker Award winner as a senior captain, and made All-America and was the WCHA Player of the Year while playing for Colorado College.

He received the Man of the Year award for the Iowa Stars’ AHL team in Des Moines.

Kleinhuizen, a native of Oak Grove, Minnesota, played four years as a defenseman for the University of Minnesota Gophers (2006-10) after making all-state for St. Francis/North Branch.

She was most recently the head girls’ hockey coach at St. Francis/North Branch, and also coaches an elite league team.

TOP TOM Tom Palkowski, who’s starting his 11th season as head coach, has guided the Tommies to four consecutive MIAC playoff titles and NCAA playoff trips. He has coached athletes to nine AllAmerica honors in the last 10 seasons.

ON A ROLL St. Thomas has also claimed two 20-win seasons in the last four years.

DID YOU KNOW?

We will be tested again early with several strong opponents. We will look to get off to a good start and maintain our intensity throughout the MIAC season as we pursue our goals of contending for a championship.

Junior goalie Kenzie Torpy has played 54 games in net and has surpassed 1,000 saves on her two-year career. Torpy has started in all but two games for the Tommies. Torpy has built a 33-14-6 record, with five shutouts, a .916 save percentage and a 1.96 goals-against average.

LAST SEASON The Tommies became the first women’s hockey program to win the conference playoff title with three victories as the No. 4 or 5 seed. They were just the second MIAC women’s hockey team to win a road playoff championship game.

St. Thomas went 13-1-1 last season when it scored three or more goals, but 1-10-3 when it scored two or less.

The Toms stood 8-10-3 late in the season. Then they went 6-0-1 in a late stretch before losing their NCAA playoff game to No. 1-ranked Plattsburgh State. The game was tied 2-2 midway through the contest.

SCHOLARS St. Thomas women’s hockey had five players qualify for the inaugural American Hockey Coaches Association Academic awards for 2016-17.

These student-athletes surpassed a 3.60 GPA and met the playing criteria of being in 40 percent or more of the team games. This group includes graduated All-America forward Kathryn Larson (3.93 GPA) and these four returners: • Kenzie Torpy, Junior, Goalie (3.87 GPA)

St. Thomas has not had a losing season since 2000. It has placed either first, second or third in the MIAC regular-season or playoff race in each of the last 18 seasons. St. Thomas has been shutout just once in its last 37 games.

GOOD TESTS The Tommies open with road games Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28-29, at Lake Forest (Illinois), and start their home season Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4, against UWStevens Point.

Senior captain Allison Borgstrom contributed seven goals and 10 assists last season, and was named honorable mention AllMIAC. In 85 career games she has 14 goals and 24 assists.

Senior captain Kaylee Druk had 10 goals and seven assists last season. She played in 34 games in her first year at Division I Syracuse. In 91 total college games she has 15 goals and 20 assists.

TOM PALKOWSKI HEAD COACH Now starting his 31st season in coaching, Tom Palkowski

Five of the six players ahead of Palkowski played four seasons.

Palkowski, who coached his 200th game in 2014-15, has won 65 percent of his games (161-81-28). He has coached athletes to nine All-American honors in the last 10 years, including three in a row by goalie Alise Riedel (2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14).

Palkowski also has a 20-year resume as a hockey assistant coach. The Columbia Heights native served 11 seasons in the boys’ programs at Columbia Heights, TotinoGrace and Mounds View high schools. Palkowski was a Tommie assistant when it won back-to-back MIAC titles in 2002-03 and 2003-04. He’s been on staff throughout the Tommies’ 17 consecutive winning seasons where it has become a top-15 team nationally. St. Thomas has won more than 76 percent of games against conference opponents since 2000.

will begin his 11th season as the Tommies’ head coach in 2017-18.

During 2013-14, Palkowski guided the Tommies to the program’s first NCAA Frozen Four berth in their 16year varsity history. That was just their second NCAA playoff trip, and St. Thomas’ 5-0 road victory over No. 5-ranked UW-Stevens Point was the program’s first NCAA playoff victory. The Tommies lost in overtime to eventual champion Plattsburgh State in the national semifinals, then finished fourth after falling 5-3 to UWRiver Falls in the third-place game. Despite playing most of her senior season with a torn ACL, Riedel set an NCAA Championships record with 63 saves in the 1-0 defeat to Plattsburgh State.

Palkowski played one season at Illinois-Chicago and then competed three seasons at St. Thomas, where he helped the Toms post a 50-13-1 record in his first two seasons with a pair of MIAC championships and two NCAA playoff berths. Despite playing just 93 games in three seasons, Palkowski still ranks seventh on the St. Thomas 10

ASSISTANT COACHES MARTY SERTICH Marty Sertich joined the Tommie coaching staff in fall 2017.

A Roseville, Minnesota, native, Sertich retired in 2016 after a 10year professional playing career in Europe and in the American Hockey League. He was college hockey’s Hobey Baker Award winner as a senior captain. He also made AllAmerica and was the WCHA Player of the Year while playing for Colorado College. He received the Man of the Year award for the Iowa Stars’ AHL team in Des Moines.

ALEXANDRA KLEINHUIZEN Alexandra Zebro Kleinhuizen joined the Tommie coaching staff in fall 2017.

Kleinhuizen, a native of Oak Grove, Minnesota, played four years as a defenseman for the University of Minnesota Gophers (2006-10) after making all-state for St. Francis/ North Branch.

She was most recently the head girls’ hockey coach at St. Francis/North Branch. She also coaches an elite league team. She is a former girls’ director for the Minnesota Advancement Program.

Last year, Sertich served as director of girls’ hockey at the Gentry Academy in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota. He currently runs Tradition Hockey, a youth training program based in Roseville. He previously ran a summer hockey camp in Roseville.

Kleinhuizen works as a public speaker and as an entrepreneur. She’s the owner of Evo UltraPerformance, the founder of the Cross Training Athlete Ministry, and owner and founder of Eternal Champion Apparel.

Every year since 2000, the Tommies have finished first, second or third in the conference or playoff races. In those 17 seasons, they have won more than 70 percent of games in the MIAC (221-58-31).

The Tommies are starting their 15th season having their home ice at Saint Thomas Ice Arena, where they have won 75 percent of their contests.

The St. Thomas locker rooms received a facelift in 2014.

St. Thomas has ranked among Division III’s top penalty-kill teams over the last few seasons, near 90 percent, and has had five All-America honorees at goalie in the last 15 seasons.

St. Thomas made its first trip to the national semifinals in March 2014 after winning its first three postseason games. They had return trips to the NCAA playoffs in March 2015, 2016 and 2017.

St. Thomas (14-8-5) won the 2016-17 MIAC championship for the fifth time in six seasons and also secured the program’s 35th consecutive winning season. The Toms lost 3-2 to Augsburg in the conference playoff title game.

The national runner-up in both 2000 and 2005, St. Thomas is ranked first in Division III all-time victories and was the first to surpass 1,000 wins. The Tommies are now 1,119-645-96 in the 93-year history of their program.

St. Thomas claimed a conference playoff berth for the 32nd time in the 32-year history of the event last season.

The Tommies have received 50 All-America honors in the last 46 seasons.

St. Thomas has placed first or second in the MIAC 51 times, including 31 of the last 34 seasons.

RED-HOT ROOKIES Last season as freshmen, in the season’s final nine games, Johnny Panvica scored eight goals and seven assists while Brett Gravelle scored five goals and eight assists.

The pair also made the seven-player MIAC All-Rookie Team.

LOOKING FORWARD

St. Thomas has allowed two or fewer goals in 42 of 69 games over the last three seasons.

The Tommies will open the season in the MIAC Showcase in Blaine Oct. 28 and 29 with games against St. Olaf and Hamline.

Their home opener is Nov. 4 against St. Mary’s.

Over the last four seasons, the Tommies have built a 44-8-3 record in games when they score first.

The Toms will travel to Dudley, Massachusetts, for a Jan. 5-6 tournament at Nichols College. The Nichols’ head coach is exTommie standout and assistant coach Parker Burgess.

St. Thomas faces Nichols the first night and then either Connecticut College or Elmira (New York).

MILESTONE St. Thomas starts its 15th hockey season at Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights. The team is 47-14-3 at home over the last six seasons.

SCHOLARS St. Thomas men’s hockey had a remarkable 14 players – out of 29 on its roster – qualify for the inaugural American Hockey Coaches Association Academic awards for 2016-17. The honorees each surpassed a 3.60 GPA and met the playing criteria of being in 40 percent or more of the team games.

St. Thomas scored just six power-play goals in its first 17 games last season, then scored on 14 of their last 48 power-play attempts over the last 10 games.

The Tommies are 74-6-5 since January 2011 in games when they score three or more goals.

SIR DUKE Eighth-year head coach Jeff “Duke” Boeser (109-54-22) recorded his 100th victory as a head coach last Dec. 2 with a 3-2 win at Hamline. He’s guided the Tommies to five MIAC championships and two runner-up placings in his first seven seasons as cotach.

Boeser has won 60 percent of his games in seven seasons as head coach, including a 76-22-14 mark in conference regular-season play. He’s been in the program as a standout player and assistant coach for a large part of the last four decades.

JEFF BOESER HEAD COACH Jeff Boeser, a key figure in St. Thomas ice hockey success

In 2013-14, St. Thomas became just the second Division III institution to qualify all four of its men’s and women’s hockey and basketball teams into the NCAA playoffs in one season. Amherst (Mass.) did it in 2009 and 2012.

He has guided St. Thomas to five MIAC titles in his first seven seasons. In his first season, Boeser led the Tommies to a second-place conference finish with a 9-5-2 record. He came back in 2011-12 with an MIAC championship team that ranked as high as No. 5 in the national polls. The Tommies finished 18-6-2 overall and lost 3-1 on the road in the NCAA playoffs to eventual champion St. Norbert. Boeser was named MIAC Coach of the Year after his Toms won 11 in a row and claimed the conference title by eight points.

POTENT PLAYER

for more than three decades, was named head coach in April 2010 following the retirement of 23-year head coach Terry Skrypek.

In 2012-13, Boeser led the Toms to their second conference crown (shared with St. John’s).

The 2013-14 campaign would see Boeser and his players capture their third consecutive conference title and first MIAC playoff title since 2008. The Toms, who climbed as high as No. 2 in the national poll, suffered a 3-0 defeat to No. 4-ranked UW-Stevens Point in the NCAA playoff quarterfinals. The Tommies won 11 of their last 13 games and built a conference win streak that peaked at 17. They broke a conference record for fewest goals allowed in a 16-game MIAC season.

St. Thomas hockey fans first met Boeser as the highscoring No. 13 who brought the crowd to its feet in the 1970s. Twice he was named to the All-MIAC team, and was chosen as the conference’s Most Valuable Performer in 1974. He helped lead the Tommies to the NAIA national tournament his junior and senior years.

His 201 points (97 goals, 104 assists) still rank him third on the St. Thomas all-time career-scoring list and fifth on the same MIAC list.

After graduation in 1975, Boeser played on the 1976 U.S. Olympic team. He was also a member of the Finnish elite hockey league in Europe. In 1986, he was inducted into the St. Thomas Athletic Hall of Fame. Boeser worked for more than 25 years on St. Thomas’ staff as the coordinator of the penalty-kill units and with defensemen.

He and his wife Lisa live in Waconia, and their children are son Landon and daughter Amber Sky.

ASSISTANT COACHES NICK BYDAL Nick Bydal brings years of junior hockey playing and coaching experience to St. Thomas, where he joins the men’s hockey staff in 2017-18.

From 2014-16, Bydal was an assistant coach with the Minnesota Magicians, part of the North American Hockey League. For the 2016-17 season he became the first head coach and general manager of the College Station Spirit in the NA3HL while continuing with the Magicians as assistant general manager.

Prior to his time with the Magicians, Bydal coached high school hockey. In 2012, he became an assistant coach at his alma mater, East Grand Forks High, assisting with the varsity and junior-varsity squads.

In 2013, he was an assistant coach for the Crookston High varsity hockey team. He also was an evaluator at the Minnesota Reebok High Performance Select 15 Festival.

In high school, he captained East Grand Forks High to two Minnesota State Tournament appearances., Bydal then spent three seasons with the Bismarck Bobcats of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). He then continued his career as a student-athlete at UW-Stevens Point of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association.

GARRETT GRUENKE Garrett Gruenke starts his third year with the St. Thomas hockey coaching staff. He works with the defensemen and does video analysis. The Plymouth, Minnesota, native played high school hockey for the BenildeSt. Margaret’s Red Knights and won two state championships in 1999 and 2001.

Gruenke played two years of junior hockey in the NAHL with the Bozeman Icedogs. He went on to a four-year hockey career for St. Thomas (2004-08) where he was a captain his senior year, and part of the 2005 national runner-up team. He was an All-MIAC honorable mention his junior and senior years. After attending the University of St. Thomas, he went on to play six years professionally in the CHL for Odessa, Rapid City and Wichita. For two years, Gruenke was a Professional Hockey Players’ Association union representative and he retired in 2014.

Gruenke currently is working for a hockey training company called the Minnesota Advancement Program (MAP) based out of Mendota Heights and Blaine. He is the director of youth development and trains hockey players ages 12 and up.

After graduating from Stevens Point, he spent time in the Southern Professional Hockey League playing with the Fayetteville FireAntz, Louisiana Ice Gators and Augusta RiverHawks.

The Tommies’ 13-8-5 record last winter extended the program’s streak of consecutive winning seasons to 35.

St. Thomas has 52 postseason wins in the last 33 seasons.

St. Thomas men’s hockey has placed first or second in the MIAC race 52 times, including 32 of the last 35 seasons.

St. Thomas has advanced to the MIAC playoffs all 32 years the format has been in place.

In 2015-16, St. Thomas finished second among all Division III men’s teams in goals allowed at 1.46 per game. Drew Fielding ranked first in shutouts (seven) and third in save percentage (.942) and goals against average (1.43).

Jeff “Duke” Boeser starts his eighth season as head coach, and his teams have won five conference titles. This is his fifth decade affiliated with Tommie hockey as a player, assistant or head coach.

ASSISTANT COACHES JACQUE VEZINA Jacque Vezina starts his ninth season on the Tommie staff as goalie coach.

In his first eight seasons, he helped St. Thomas reach three NCAA playoff trips. He’s coached National Player of the Year and two-time All-America goalie Drew Fielding and current AllAmerican Benjamin Myers.

He played two seasons professionally in the CHL with the Rio Grande Valley (Texas) Killer Bees; was a two-time all-conference goalie and played in two NCAA tournaments at UW-River Falls in 2001 and 2003;

and was league MVP in junior hockey in Great Falls, Montana, in 1999. The Hudson, Wisconsin, native was a high school all-stater.

He received a bachelor’s degree in psychology at River Falls and is a full-time staff member at the Mendota Heights-based Flexx Institute of Hockey Training, where over the last six years he’s helped the development of players who have moved on to Junior A, USNDTP and college hockey. Vezina also has worked as a goalie coach for Cedar Rapids of the USHL. Vezina lives in Roberts, Wisconsin, where he and Moria are raising their three daughters and one son.

MEN’S HOCKEY INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS FIELDING NAMED 2014-15 PLAYER OF THE YEAR Tommie goalie Drew Fielding was named the Division III National Player of the Year by U.S. College Hockey Online following the 2014-15 season. He also made USCHO’s sixplayer first-team All-America team. That gave him a sweep of the major awards in D-III men’s hockey. He also was named a Capital One Academic All-America honoree and graduated with a 3.84 GPA in business/financial management.

Fielding, a Burlington, Ontario native, also won the Sid Watson Award as Division III men’s hockey National Player of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association. He’s the first Tommie recipient of the elite award since Steve Aronson was honored in 2000. Fielding was also among 30 players named to the 2014-15 CCM Division III All-America team in men’s hockey announced by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). Fielding helped lead St. Thomas to a 16-6-4 final record in 2014-15 and a fourth consecutive MIAC championship.

He was named conference Player of the Year after sharing the same award in 2013-14. His 19 career shutouts rank third most in Division III history. Fielding finished 52-22-8 on his career with a 1.83 GAA and .925 save percentage in 83 games. His record included two 0-0 ties where he shut out opponents for 65 minutes. St. Thomas has received men’s hockey All-America honors 48 times in the last 45 seasons.
