Dear USD Alumni Community, What an exciting time to be a Torero! USD alumni are a vibrant part of the university community, and it is an honor to serve as president of the USD Alumni Association. As you’ll see in the pages of this annual report, it was a great year, and I hope you were a part of the fun. Your participation helps strengthen the Torero Network, and we need your help now more than ever. Join us for Homecoming and Family Weekend, the USD Wine Classic or at a Torero Club event in your community. I invite you to meet up with former classmates, cheer on your favorite Torero athletic teams and send a class note to USD Magazine. And come to Alcalá Park to be amazed by our current students. They are accomplishing great things yet their success rests on the foundation laid by those who came before them.

Letter from the Director of Alumni Relations GREETINGS TOREROS! The USD Alumni Association is stronger than ever, and it is a great time to be a part of the university community. As USD enters a year of significant transition to a new president, we take a moment to look back on the success of the previous year. You will see that this annual report includes lots of data, but of all the measurements, the most important number to me is 1,055. This represents the number of alumni who volunteered their time on behalf of the USD Alumni Association last year. We are grateful for their service and honored by their commitment to USD. Your Alumni Office staff is here to serve you, and we rely on YOUR participation as we continue to build support for the University of San Diego. I urge you to join us – as a volunteer and as a donor – as we work to make USD a viable option for generations of future Toreros. As always, it’s a great day to be a Torero! Best wishes, Charles Bass Director, Office of Alumni Relations

USD Alumni Vision

USD Alumni Mission

Our Strategic Plan

• We envision alumni — both undergraduate and graduate — who are connected and proud, who raise the profile of the University of San Diego and who continue to support its mission of service and Catholic education.

Our mission is to connect, engage and involve alumni with the University of San Diego and with one another in support of the university’s mission and goals as a Roman Catholic institution.

The USD Alumni Association developed a strategic plan to chart the course of the organization through 2015. This strategic plan outlines a new way of thinking, organizing and measuring success that will better meet the needs of alumni and the university. The USD Alumni Association is primarily charged with engaging alumni and building relationships with alumni. At USD, alumni are encouraged to give back to the university by volunteering and by contributing to class giving, alumni endowed scholarships and the Alcalá Alumni Fund, which supports the university’s greatest needs.

• We envision alumni who are excited about having graduated from USD. They support each other, cheer for each other and support the university spiritually, intellectually and financially.

We also strive to build effective communication vehicles, programs and events that build strong and lasting relationships between alumni and their alma mater.

• We envision that prospective students will choose USD in part because of the strength and vibrancy of its alumni network. • We envision a transformed USD community that instinctively expects alumni involvement in all facets of campus life.

USD’s national and international prominence is enhanced through stronger ties with alumni and by the alumni themselves.

Five core themes of the USD Alumni Association Highlights in 2013-14 strategic plan are: The Alumni Association is proud of its accomplishments during 2013-14. Here are just 1. Employ targeted and segmented engagement strategies. 2. Promote an alumni-inclusive perspective: alumni relations is the work of the entire USD community. 3. Embrace a volunteer-driven organization model where volunteers are empowered to build and manage their own programs. Work with alumni to create engagement experiences. 4. Become more relevant in the lives of alumni through targeted communication and programs that resonate with alumni. 5. Measure success through targeted benchmarks and create an engagement dashboard with monthly progress.

some of the highlights. • More than 50 alumni and parents participated in our inaugural Volunteer Leadership Conference, featuring interactions with senior USD administrators and faculty. • Alumni and parents enjoyed networking, unique venues and lively presentations by USD’s athletic director and undergraduate deans during the inaugural Torero Tour. The successful tour visited six cities in seven days, complete with the Diego mascot and the Torero Bus! • USD’s regional alumni chapters have been expanded to become Torero Clubs, welcoming all alumni, parents and USD friends in 23 regions across the U.S. • The Office of International Constituent Relations is now part of the Office of Alumni Relations, providing greater opportunities to engage alumni and friends living abroad. • Every day, new opportunities are discovered to involve alumni in the life of the university. How do you want to be part of Torero life?

Signature Alumni Events

Homecoming and Family Weekend Homecoming, reunions and parent weekends have been long-standing traditions at the University of San Diego. Borrowing the best elements from Homecoming festivities, which were first celebrated in 1957, and Parent and Family Weekend, which was first held in 1988, USD combined the traditions in 2011 into one Torero Blue weekend! Programs included forums, campus tours, affinity and class reunions, a student concert, tailgate festivities, a football game and a closing Mass. In 2013 approximately 2,500 USD alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty and employees attended the host of weekend activities.

BY THE NUMBERS — HOMECOMING AND FAMILY WEEKEND 2013: • 2,500 Attendees • 900

• 35-33 The score when Toreros defeated Marist University on the football field • $1.75 Million donated throughout the year by alumni • 85+

USD Wine Classic

Alumni Christmas Mass

Established in 2009 by the Alumni Association Board, the University of San Diego Wine Classic is an unforgettable wine tasting event held at the Joan B. Kroc Institute of Peace & Justice’s scenic Garden of the Sea, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The event draws more than 750 guests and showcases the owners and vintners from 30 USD-affiliated wineries, and features more than 60 wines. This year’s Wine Classic raised more than $56,000 for the Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund. More than 50 alumni volunteers help plan and work at the event to create a magical experience. New this year, the Vintner’s Dinner precedes the Wine Classic featuring four wineries, vintners, and dinner in the La Gran Terraza restaurant on campus. Featuring a gourmet four-course dinner paired with featured wines, the vintners discuss the philosophy behind wine making.

Each December, alumni and friends join together in a celebration of faith at the annual USD Alumni Christmas Mass in Founders Chapel. During this special holiday tradition, the Student Alumni Association hosted a toy drive; guests brought unwrapped toys which were contributed to the local Mission Valley YMCA to be distributed to families in need. The most recent recipient of both the Bishop Buddy and Mother Hill Awards are recognized at the conclusion of the Mass.

Alumni Philanthropy Annually, alumni participation is calculated as the percentage of alumni who give financially to their alma mater. National ranking guidebooks, such as U.S. News & World Report, use alumni participation as evidence of alumni satisfaction to measure the university’s prestige and institutional quality rating. When alumni give to USD, the university’s rankings increase and so does the value of your degree.

THE GREAT E-WASTE COLLECTION – NEW THIS YEAR! The Young Alumni Network hosted the first event Great E-Waste Collection Day for the USD E-Waste Collection Center. All those old batteries, alarm clocks and computers count as donations to USD and help build USD rankings and programs.

MYTHBUSTER VIDEOS – NEW! Young Alumni were featured in web videos about debunking myths about giving to USD. Check them out at sandiego.edu/giving.

ALCALÁ ALUMNI FUND – ENRICHING CAMPUS LIFE

TORERO REGIONAL RALLY – INAUGURAL YEAR! USD Torero Clubs competed to gain the highest giving rate in order to win bragging rights, a $2,000 scholarship for a student from their area, and a shout-out in the USD Magazine. Kansas City and Chicago brought home the prize with 23.4 percent and 15.6 percent respectively.

This fund provides critical, unrestricted funding to support the university’s greatest needs. Allocated with direction from alumni, gifts to the Alcalá Alumni Fund in 2013-14 supported the Social Innovation Challenge, Changemaker Challenge, Community Service Learning and Veteran Student Services.

ALUMNI CONNECTIONS FUND Established in 2013 by the Alumni Board, this fund reinvests in USD alumni. Every dollar raised is directed toward engaging alumni locally, nationally and globally.

“I give to USD because every gift, no matter the amount, makes a difference.”

Torero Clubs is a concept that allows all USD constituents to stay connected to the university and to one another. All USD alumni, parents, students and friends are encouraged to participate and attend Torero Club events and programming. Not only is this a great opportunity for professional networking, but it also provides an ongoing connection to USD. The Torero Club launch was kicked off by the Torero Tour. The Torero Tour was a six-city, seven-day event that saw three of our deans and executive director of athletics on the road bringing USD to the people. Alumni–Student Relations

Alumni have several ways to meet and mentor current students. Alumni volunteers advise, speak to and network with students throughout the year at various events on campus or through students clubs and activities. Here are a few: • Senior Seminar • Alumni Speakers • Student Organization Advisors • Senior Salute • And More!

STUDENT ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The University of San Diego Student Alumni Association (SAA) is an official USD student organization focused on connecting students with alumni to promote personal and career development, to foster university tradition and to develop a culture of philanthropy. Charged with connecting current students with alumni, SAA plans and hosts several signature programs with featured alumni, including Networking with the Pros, Take a Torero to Lunch and the end-of-the-semester tradition, Finals Feeding Frenzy. Students involved with the Student Alumni Association network with successful alumni, build USD tradition and Torero pride, and receive training in networking and professionalism.

“Being a part of Student Alumni Association has given me a lot of management experience and connections. Networking is vital to a successful career, and SAA is fantastic for helping me take my professionalism out of theory and into the real world.”
