Graduate Case Studies

FERN WAREHAM AND RACHEL MAFFEI

Course: BA (Hons) Dance

Year of Graduation: 2018

Job Title: Founders of Coalesce Dance Theatre

Coalesce Dance Theatre was founded in 2018 by us, Fern Wareham and Rachel Maffei, after studying together at The University of Salford. We are proud to be an all-female identifying, LGBTQIA+, and disabilityled contemporary dance company based in Manchester. We started by creating self-funded small-scale works for local dance festivals and platforms. In the early years, we took on multiple roles, including dancers, choreographers, bid writers, producers, and more, to build our company's profile.

In 2019, we successfully applied for project funding from Arts Council England, completing 10 ACE-funded projects and receiving over £250,000 in support. We've performed at over 100 venues across the country and have three successful touring shows co-created with young people, embedding their voices into our work

Without the support of The University of Salford Coalesce wouldn't be where it is today. Firstly, being the place we met, grew and established their working practices. Secondly, through the continued support of two of the companies activities; DanceConnect and CYD. These two programmes are highly integral to continued growth and development of dance in the North West.

Salford nurtures and encourages growth beyond leaving the course, they are passionate about the dance scene and deliver high quality training and experiences.

Course: BA (Hons) Dance

Year of Graduation: 2022

Job Title: Head Dance Teacher

As an international student, I’ve since returned to my home in Bulgaria where I am now a Head Dance Teacher. I combine the fundamentals of ballet and contemporary technique, derived from my studies at Salford with my own foundational learnings to choreography and teach young aspiring artists. I’ve also recently gained the role of Dance Instructor for the Summer Academy of Musical Theatre in Bulgaria. I’m also working on new projects that promote the cultural richness and significance of Plodiv.

I learnt so much from my course that I was able to come back to Bulgaria and immediately take up a job as Head Dance Teacher at the National High School for Stage and Film Design in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. I want to thank the University of Salford and my dance lecturers as they gave me everything I need to become the person, teacher and choreographer I am now.

JO FREEMAN

Course: MA Dance Performance and Professional Practices (Emergence)

Year of Graduation: 2021

Job Title: Professional Freelance Dance Creative & Teacher at Northern Ballet School and Fallen Angels Dance Theatre

I am a freelance dance artist and am enjoying a rich and varied career. One of my roles is with Fallen Angels Dance Theatre & Movement. Their approach to creativity has allowed me to feel empowered and valued with my experience in and out of the studio. I have been involved in life changing works with opportunities such as performing at the Royal Opera House, collaborating with Digital Artists and most important growing skills and authenticity as an artist.

My experience studying Dance at Salford really delved deep into so many different aspects of creative roles in the industry. Despite being older than the rest of my cohort, I learnt so much and really valued the variety in our training.

The Emergence Company master’s programme at Salford is prestigious for the industry professionals that work with the students and so I knew it would be an exciting opportunity. I am so grateful that the staff at Salford really did everything they could to give us the best experience possible.

I had difficulties with my mental health during my studies; however, I still felt the staff believed in me and invested in fulfilling my potential and that is something I will forever be grateful for.

I still work closely with the university because of the connections I gained during my time there and have taught and mentored the students. It really feels like I’ve been able to give back and inspire future creatives.

The highlight of the course for me was how we got to work so closely with the choreographers, and I really feel like I built a valued relationship with them and with my cohort that I know will last.

LUCY WISWOULD-GREEN

Course: BA (Hons) Dance

As a third year student studying BA (Hons) Dance at the University of Salford, I have gained so much experience in many different areas that go far beyond dance. The programme here is so dynamic; we’ve delved into everything from contemporary dance and ballet to street dance and choreography, and are constantly pushing our physical and creative boundaries. What I’ve loved most is the collaborative spirit of the New Adelphi building, where we primarily train. Throughout my time at Salford, I have had opportunities to collaborate with fashion students, music students, technicians and more, and I am really finding my own choreographic voice. The Dance at Salford team are amazing, always encouraging us to innovate and providing invaluable feedback. Looking

ahead, I’m excited to see where my passion takes me, whether that’s performing, teaching, or even starting my own dance company.

Salford has definitely equipped me with the skills, resilience, and artistic vision to make that a reality.

WING LEUNG GORETTI

Course: MA Dance

Studying for an MA in Dance at the University of Salford has been an incredibly enriching experience, blending rigorous academic study with creative practice. The course strikes a great balance between practical studio work and critical research, giving me the tools to push boundaries in performance, teaching and scholarly writing. One of the highlights has been collaborating with fellow students and industry professionals, which has expanded my perspective on contemporary dance practices. Navigating life as an international student has had its challenges, but the creative environment and connections with peers have made it a meaningful journey.

A typical day varies—some are spent in the studio experimenting with movement, others in seminars discussing dance philosophy or cultural contexts. The university’s facilities, including well-equipped studios and research resources, have been invaluable. My ambition is to work as a choreographer and educator, bridging different dance traditions, and this MA has given me the confidence and skills to pursue that path. The most rewarding part has been discovering new ways to think about dance—not just as an art form, but as a means of cultural dialogue and innovation.

My time here has allowed me to deepen my understanding of choreography, dance theory, and performance, while also encouraging me to explore my own artistic voice.
