OUR SCHOOL Welcome to the School of Health and Society – a forward-thinking, dynamic school with a commitment to lifelong learning and real world impact.

We are one of the largest educators of nurses and midwives in the North West, known for our track record of collaborating with a wide range of industry partners across health and social care to produce highly skilled graduates, with real worklife experience. We are also experts in the social sciences sector and are known locally, regionally, nationally and internationally for our applied research into the interface between health, wellbeing, housing, criminal justice and social care. We effect social and cultural change by research-informed engagement and practice. We are an inclusive School and we celebrate the diversity of the community that we serve. Salford has a rich history and an exciting future; we sit at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse, and actively engage with stakeholders across the region to address the health outcomes arising from the devolution of power to Greater Manchester’s local authorities. We have always been committed to addressing the needs and aspirations of our local community and beyond. One of the most exciting upcoming projects for the University is the recently announced medical school, which will combine the expertise of the University of Salford, University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University, providing world-class training for the next generation of doctors and health professionals. But our focus isn’t just local – we’re actively driving forward our international reach. We have an excellent reputation with the Chinese health and social care sector, giving Chinese students the opportunity to complete our master’s in Nursing programme. This brochure is just a snapshot of some of the fantastic facilities and courses that we can offer you here in Salford. I hope to welcome you to the School in the near future. Margaret Rowe, Dean of the School of Health and Society

ABOUT OUR UNIVERSITY The University of Salford is a friendly, vibrant and pioneering place to study. We think of ourselves as a family and by joining the School of Health and Society, our students, staff and industry partners become part of this family. We continually invest and develop our campus, facilities and industry partnerships to enhance the student experience and to ensure our students are provided with the best possible opportunities to develop the skills needed for success in their career. Founded in 1896, the University has a rich history of innovation and long-standing connections with the community and local economy, as it equipped working people with the knowledge and skills they needed to succeed in the emerging industries of their time. Making a real difference to individuals, communities and businesses has always been at the heart of the University’s activities, and today we’re closer to industry than ever, with more links with small and mediumsized enterprises than any other university in Greater Manchester.

We were one of the first UK institutions to pioneer ‘sandwich’ courses that gave our students practical, work-based experience alongside traditional academic learning. We remain true to our heritage - our courses remain firmly focused on our connections with industry and are designed to equip our students for the challenges of the working world. It’s an exciting time to join us: we’re investing in stateof-the art teaching and research facilities, new student accommodation and in extending our global reach and impact. Our newly opened Simulation Suite has been recognised as a centre of excellence, allowing our students to learn vital skills in an environment that is as close to a real clinical setting as possible. Whether you are just starting out or already qualified, we provide everything you need to further your career or embark on a new one, from single study days to full master’s and doctoral degrees that will greatly enhance your profile.

Our vision: “By pioneering exceptional industry partnerships, we will lead the way in real world experiences, preparing students for life.”

OUR LOCATION There are many things that make Salford unique, but it has to be our location that really sets us apart. University life isn’t just about lectures and labs – the city our students live in also shapes how they learn and the person they will become. Salford and Manchester are cities full of history, culture and places just waiting to be discovered and explored. The city of Salford is at the heart of Greater Manchester, one of the UK’s most vibrant and multicultural city-regions. Manchester is famous for its music, culture, art, science, technology, and sport, in particular for the world famous Manchester United and Manchester City football teams. It’s home to over 100,000 students from across the globe – the largest student population in Europe – creating a wonderful place to live and study. The city is also renowned for its vibrant nightlife and thriving café culture. There’s a host of bars, nightclubs, comedy and music venues to suit all tastes. Soak up the sunshine outside the canalside bars of Castlefield; enjoy craft ales and burgers in the trendy Northern Quarter, or let your hair down in the popular nightspots of Deansgate Locks and Oxford Road. Whatever you enjoy doing, you’ll be sure to find it here. Shoppers are also spoilt for choice: Manchester Arndale shopping centre is less than two miles from campus, where you’ll find the very best of high street and designer shops; hop on a bus to the Trafford Centre, an enormous shopping and entertainment complex; or find your own unique style in the vintage and alternative boutiques of the Northern Quarter. Salford is perfectly located for easy access to other UK cities and countryside. London is just two hours from Manchester by train, and Liverpool is 45 minutes away. The magnificent Lake and Peak District National Parks can be reached within a couple of hours, or travel further afield to visit Scotland or Wales. Manchester Airport has daily flights around the world and across the UK, making international travel a cheap and easy option. Our excellent transport system makes travel across Manchester and Salford as easy as can be. The University is on many busy bus routes and the Metrolink connects the city centre to our campus at MediaCityUK. Peel Park campus has good train links to regional and national train services via Salford Crescent train station, which is based on campus.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS More than 3,000 international students from over 100 countries are currently studying at the University. Our international team travel throughout the year to talk to students about the great things that Salford has to offer, and how our courses can help them take that important first step towards a great career. During these visits, they are available to answer any questions students might have about leaving their home country to study, or about the University itself. They have an in-depth knowledge about all aspects of student life at Salford including details on entry requirements, career options and scholarships. Students can contact us at any time during the enquiry or application period. As well as answering questions we will also send regular emails giving helpful information about the University, including when to start applying for a visa, when to apply for University accommodation and details of our Welcome Programme for international students. Additionally, we can arrange for applicants to speak to the academics who will be teaching a specific course, or to current students from their home country who will be able to talk about their experiences of studying and living in Salford. We understand this is one of the most important decisions of a student’s life, so we will be there to support them all the way, from initial enquiry to the point where they accept their offer and get on the plane - we can even help arrange a transfer from Manchester Airport to their campus accommodation. MORE THAN JUST A DEGREE We believe that a degree should be more than a line on a CV - it should be a reflection of hard work, passion and commitment; an achievement that shows employers who our graduates are and what they’re capable of.

Our courses are designed to develop the clinical knowledge and skills our students need to excel in their chosen area. Our aim is to prepare all our students for employment, ensuring there is a seamless transition between their studies and their future career. One of the ways we do this is by taking advantage of our industry partnerships, providing the opportunity to gain real world experience. All of our courses are taught by enthusiastic, dedicated professionals who are experts within their field. Our flexible and responsive approach to our courses means that our students are learning the latest techniques informed by pioneering research, aiding career development and progression.

WE’RE PROUD OF OUR ACHIEVEMENTS. It’s not just about what we say; we have the evidence to back it up too. Here are just a few examples:

• We’re very proud that in the Complete University Guide 2018 our BSc (Hons) Social Policy course was ranked 3rd in the UK for student satisfaction.

• Our Midwifery Directorate retained its UNICEF Baby Friendly accreditation in 2015 after receiving the UK’s highest ever mark.

OUR STUDENTS AND GRADUATES ARE ALSO OUR BIGGEST ADVOCATES: “Choosing to study Adult Nursing at the University of Salford has been the greatest, most life changing decision I have ever made. The course is both challenging and rewarding and has a robust support network. I would not be in the position that I am in now had it not been for the valuable contribution of the supportive, credible lecturers here, the exciting opportunities that the University has to offer and the top of the range facilities I was able to utilise for my learning and development. Due to close links with partner universities across the globe, the University of Salford offers international study opportunities. In my final year of nursing, I participated in the EU RADAR Programme which involved studying at Fulda University of Applied Sciences in Germany with students and teachers from across the globe. Taking advantage of such opportunities has maximised my employability prospects and provided me with indispensable life skills.” MARIA TAYLOR, BSC (HONS) NURSING (ADULT) GRADUATE “While studying Criminology and Sociology I had the chance to study part of my second year in Detroit, USA. This was an amazing opportunity as it allowed me to experience a different culture, make new friends, meet different types of people and build my confidence to take on new challenges in my future. I currently work as a Management Information Officer for a local authority within children’s services for looked after children. The skills I learnt at Salford have helped me progress and develop within my current role and past jobs.” HOLLY BRYAN, BSC (HONS) CRIMINOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY GRADUATE “I worked as a clinical matron in the Medical Assessment Unit at Fairfield General Hospital while studying for my master’s. I felt the course was tailor made for me - I’ve developed my leadership and management skills in a way that enables me to influence and impact the care of patients with dementia across the whole Trust. I’m sharing this knowledge with the wider team, and we now have a steering group within the Trust, which is developing the service we offer.” ADELE DOHERTY, MSC LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT FOR HEALTHCARE PRACTICE GRADUATE “This course provides a balance between theoretical and clinical skills and helped develop my level of critical thinking through participation in the simulation laboratory, group discussion and presentations. Implementing this knowledge in the day-to-day care of patients has been very useful. We were taught by tutors who are passionate about diabetes and who shared their expert knowledge in diabetes with enthusiasm. The knowledge and skills gained through the course have helped me to acquire a job as a community specialist diabetes nurse.” ISABELLE LATANI BOUDOP, MSC DIABETES CARE GRADUATE “The choice of modules available on the MSc Midwifery enabled me to develop and integrate knowledge and skills in clinical practice, leadership, management, and research. The support from the lecturers was excellent, with both face to face tutorials and online support, which enabled me to maintain a workable balance between study, work and home life.” ANNE MCGLONE, MSC MIDWIFERY GRADUATE

PREPARING OUR STUDENTS TO MAKE A TRUE SUCCESS The University has invested over £150 million in both living and learning spaces over the past five years, bringing the School some of the most advanced facilities available in the UK. From the historic Peel building to the futuristic MediaCityUK campus, we’re proud of our heritage, but we also invest heavily in modern, exceptionally equipped facilities. The School of Health and Society is home to a range of outstanding facilities of which we have continually invested in to give all our students the best possible learning experience. Our commitment to investing in our facilities to encompass the latest equipment is our guarantee to our students that their learning will be at the forefront of practice and will prepare them to make a true success of their future career.

13 Our Simulation Suite, accredited as a centre of teaching excellence, consists of several clinical ward areas, two replica hospital wards with control rooms and a mocked-up rehabilitation flat, all housed on campus within the Mary Seacole building. The hospital wards come complete with lifelike manikins which replicate breathing, talking, blinking, bleeding and more. Students can practice a number of complex procedures on the manikins, including putting in a chest drain, a catheter, and attaching them to a ventilator. Within the suite we also have a maternal and fetal simulation system which allows our midwifery students to appreciate the birthing experience from the onset of labour, through delivery, to treatment of the mother after delivery. We also have a home birth room which can be used to simulate giving birth at home or a water birth. Additionally, we have a number of skills rooms within the School that enhance student learning, from taking blood pressure to giving CPR, helping students get used to working in a ward situation. Housed alongside our replica hospital wards, our immersive simulation room allows users to be transported to any environment without having to leave the suite. The technology combines a series of cameras which project realistic images onto the walls, with audio equipment to transform the space into anything from the back of an ambulance to a nightclub, prison cell or family home.

We have recently developed a brand new specialist counselling suite which is used for training students to become professional counsellors and psychotherapists. The suite features therapeutic areas where one-to-one, family and group interactions can occur.

IMPROVING PEOPLE’S LIVES THROUGH RESEARCH The research undertaken in our leading Centre for Applied Research in Health, Welfare and Policy (CARe) reflects the complex and interconnected global challenges faced by contemporary society. These challenges include health inequalities, ensuring the welfare of children and young people, mobility of populations, access to housing, ensuring fair welfare systems and services, modernisation of health and social care, crime and justice, contested identities, and digitally driven social change. Postgraduate research is central to our research ambitions. These are global issues but their effects are often felt by front line practitioners, communities and individuals. To tackle these issues there is a growing need for robust evidence-based research which is closely connected to practitioners, decision makers and policy makers. CARe brings together a multi-disciplinary team covering nursing, midwifery, counselling, social work, social policy, sociology and criminology to offer robust theoretical and evidence-based approaches in order to generate knowledge and provide significant insights about contemporary society. Our work contributes research driven knowledge to offer a better understanding of the delivery and receipt of interventions, practices and policies.

CARe produces high quality academic outputs and we are renowned for our production of relevant, accessible and applied materials for wider audiences. Working across the University’s pioneering Industry Collaboration Zone (ICZ) initiative CARe draws its strength from individual researchers and the combined research excellence within four research intensive teams. These teams have established reputations in pursuing work along discrete lines of inquiry:

THE SALFORD INSTITUTE FOR DEMENTIA The University of Salford is making a tangible difference to people living with dementia and their families and carers, in our local community and beyond. The Salford Institute for Dementia was established in 2013 with the aim of highlighting the humanity and personhood of those affected by the condition, and enabling them to live positive, fulfilled lives. The Institute brings together the expertise and ambition of over 50 colleagues from across the University. Together, and supported by national organisations such as Alzheimer’s UK and the Dementia Action Alliance, the Institute is working to make Salford a ‘dementia friendly’ University. In May 2017, we opened our new Dementia Hub, which will act as an outreach centre that will allow the public to access information and support about living well with dementia. The £300,000 hub features a visitor’s centre, garden and kitchen, all built to the latest dementia-friendly designs that help people with dementia to better understand the environment. We also offer an MSc Dementia: Care and the Enabling Environment course to help health care professionals understand the ways in which the built environment can be designed and modified to support people living with dementia and their carers. The course can be accessed online, making it a highly flexible and accessible option for practitioners nationally and internationally.

EXCELLENCE LOCALLY, LEADING GLOBALLY SALFORD ANTI-POVERTY TASKFORCE

TRANSNATIONAL RESEARCH

In February 2017, Salford City Council launched its new Anti-Poverty Strategy, outlining the approach of the council and its partners to addressing poverty across the city. In support of this strategy researchers from our Sustainable Housing and Urban Studies Unit (SHUSU) have been working with Salford City Council to establish the Salford Anti-Poverty Taskforce. The aim of this Taskforce is to provide robust research and analysis that can feed into the delivery and development of the Anti-Poverty Strategy, focusing on both qualitative and quantitative research. Working with academics from across the University, SHUSU is responsible for coordinating a programme of research that supports Salford’s anti-poverty agenda. The Taskforce will also provide opportunities for students to support the Anti-Poverty Strategy through dissertation projects and placements.

Our globally-respected researchers have developed positive health, social and cultural change at local, regional, national and international levels. Researchers in Knowledge, Health and Place (KHP) have been working on improving health care and services in Uganda. One project led to a Ugandan Maternal and Newborn Hub being formed which focused on improving maternal and newborn healthcare in order to reduce the high levels of morbidity and mortality in these areas in Uganda. The programme is also being used to educate local and global students through evaluating scenario-based teaching models to help students develop a holistic, empathetic approach to care.

Find out more about our current research and partnerships projects on our website at www.salford.ac.uk/research/care @UoS_CARe or follow us at

CHAMPIONING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT At the University of Salford we offer a range of professional development courses that can be tailored to the individual needs of your organisation. Our courses equip future leaders and managers with the skills they need to make real change to their services, leading to positive outcomes for patients and service users. We combine expert teaching with practical application to deliver learning that is flexible, current to practice, competitively priced and taught in some of the most advanced clinical environments available in the UK. We are adaptable in our approach which means we are able to meet the needs of organisations, whether that is by offering flexible teaching styles, or developing training as a response to the evolving requirements of today’s health and social care professionals. We have recently developed a partnership with The School of Health Studies, Gibraltar Health Authority, and started running our MSc in Leadership and Management for Healthcare Practice in September 2017, with staff from across the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA) enrolling on the course. We’re proud that Salford has been selected to work with GHA, to help build upon and develop the confidence of their staff to try new and creative approaches to the workplace, deal with complex leadership situations and provide effective patient and service outcomes. Dr Ron Coram, Principal of the School of Health Studies commented: “Implementing quality improvements that are locally led, patient-centred and clinically driven, is how contemporary health and social care has to be delivered. Responding to local needs, this master’s course will help GHA staff to transform patient and service outcomes at a local level.” In addition to our suite of leadership and management master’s courses, we offer a diverse range of single modules for continuing professional development that are aimed at those in practice, such as mentorship and non medical prescribing. We can also offer a bespoke service to your organisation, offering training and development that meets your needs.

WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO FEEL AT HOME Where our students decide to live is one of the most important decisions they will make about their University life. Salford has a great range of accommodation on offer to suit the preferences and budget of all our students. University accommodation is provided in partnership with Campus Living Villages, a global provider specialising in safe, supportive and exciting student accommodation. Our newest accommodation area, Peel Park Quarter, creates a mini-village with 1,367 en-suite rooms as well as a cinema, gym, launderette, games room and group study lounges. Adjacent to the accommodation are our sports centre, pool, spa, shops and dining areas. We also have flats for couples and adapted rooms and facilities for students with additional requirements. This is probably the first time many of our students will be living away from home and even the most confident among them will be feeling a little anxious about such a big move. We know how daunting it can be, so all our accommodation areas have friendly, helpful on-site staff, with 24-hour security.

CHOICES OF ACCOMMODATION INCLUDE:

• • • •

Single study bedrooms One bedroom flats for postgraduate and undergraduate couples Accommodation for families with children Adapted rooms for students with special requirements.

For the latest information and prices, contact Salford Student Village through their website www.salfordstudentvillage.com

Or if they need any advice about loans and bursaries, accommodation, visas, health and wellbeing, careers and employability, disability, carer and care leaver support, LGBT issues or any other aspects of student life whilst at Salford, our dedicated askUS advisors across campus are there to help. Academic support is also on hand from the Library and the Students’ Union.
