EXTERNAL SUPPORT / 22
WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF SALFORD!
Welcome to The University of Salford! We are so excited that you are joining us and we cannot wait to welcome you onto campus. This booklet will introduce you to our team and the support that we can offer, as well as highlight the other university support that may be useful to you.
Please feel free to contact us on askUS@salford.ac.uk to find out more about any of the information.
WHAT IS ESTRANGEMENT?
SO, WHAT IS ESTRANGEMENT?
'Estrangement' is a term used by Student Finance to describe those aged 18-24 who are not in contact with their parents. Here at the university, we offer support based on a wider definition of estrangement. We can support both those who have no contact or relationship with their biological or adoptive parents, as well as those that are able to demonstrate a negative relationship with them.
SUPPORT FOR YOUR SUPPORTERS
If you’d like and you give us permission to, we can also speak about your time at university with a member of your support network. Whether they are a social worker or Personal Adviser, a foster parent or a current teacher supporting you on your transition to university, we want you to let them know that we are here if they have any questions.
We as a team and as a university are committed to offering you the specific support that you need both before, during and after you apply.
WHAT IS CARE EXPERIENCE?
Support is available for you whether you meet the definition of a Care Leaver, or if you instead fit the wider definition of ‘Care Experienced’.
A Care Leaver is anyone who meets the statuary definition, meaning that you have spent a period of at least 13 weeks in care between age 14-16 and that spanned over your 16th birthday. This usually means that you are supported by a Local Authority, and that you may have a personal advisor or social worker to help you transition to university. However, we understand that different Local Authorities have different offers of support and therefore we can help you speak to your Local Authority if needed.
Care experience refers to anyone who has spent any amount of time in care at any age. This may mean that you are a Care Leaver that is supported by a Local Authority, but the University can offer support to anyone who has experienced care for any amount of time.
Students who are care experienced often face the same barriers to higher education that Care Leavers do, but often do not have the same level of Local Authority support. Therefore, the university offers the same support to both students that care experienced and those that are Care Leavers.
STAND ALONE
LEGACY PLEDGE
We recognise the differences, but also the similarities that estranged students share with care experienced students. We will continue to include estranged students in our action plan of our NNECL Quality Mark Award so all actions in this will apply to estranged students where possible.
We will integrate our current pledge into the NNECL Quality Mark. We pledge that we will always ensure that the support for both groups will be equitable and will always offer the same level of support for both.
WHAT IS SEEKING SANCTUARY?
We are dedicated to ensuring access to Higher Education regardless of a person’s background and therefore we offer specific support for those who have sought asylum in the UK. This could look like any of the following:
/ You have claimed asylum in the UK and are awaiting a decision on your claim, or you are the dependent of someone who has done this
/ You have claimed asylum and been granted limited status in the UK or are the dependent of someone who has done this
/ You have been given humanitarian protection in the UK
/ You are from another form of forced migrant background
WHAT ARE CARING RESPONSIBILITIES?
We know that juggling your studies can be difficult at the best of times, and this can become more complex when you have caring responsibilities. Having caring responsibilities means that you provide unpaid care to someone, such as a relative, friend or neighbour, who could not go without this care due to a long term physical or mental health condition, disability, addiction or frailty.
WHAT DOES LGBTQIA+ MEAN?
Here at Salford, we want everyone to be able to be and express themselves to become their most true self. So, we have specific support for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual and more!

REGISTERING FOR SUPPORT
When you start university, we contact everyone who has ticked on either their UCAS application or their Online Registration form that they are a member of one of our student groups. Do not worry if you have not done this, we can support you at any point if you contact us. If you are unsure, then please contact us so that we can ensure we are supporting you.
When we contact you, we will ask you to fill out our registration form. On the registration form you will be asked to provide details about yourself and your circumstances and you may be asked to provide some evidence of this. Please see below for the evidence that we can accept:
FOR STUDENTS THAT ARE ESTRANGED:
/ The decision letter/email from Student Finance that grants you independent status for either the current academic year or the duration of your studies due to being irreconcilably estranged from your parent(s)
/ A letter from a member of staff at school or college which explains that they knew about the difficult relationship whilst the student was at school and their subsequent estrangement
/ A letter from the student’s doctor explaining that they have consistently, and historically reported difficulties associated with estrangement
/ A letter from a social worker or local authority that shows they were aware of the student’s difficult situation and/or they allocated them a child protection order
/ A letter from a counsellor or an organisation such as National Association of People Abused in Childhood or Karma Nirvana that can vouch for the fact the student has been seeking support for their estrangement or disownment
/ A letter from a housing support worker who may have helped the student find accommodation after they left home
/ A letter from a faith leader explaining that they were aware of the difficulties in the student’s family and their subsequent estrangement
/ A statement of incident from the Police that shows any callouts, arrests or cautions involved in the case
/ Appropriate evidence for any student who is still in contact with their family but has a poor, controlling or negative relationship with them
FOR STUDENTS THAT ARE CARE EXPERIENCED:
/ A letter from your local authority stating your name, date of birth, the dates you were in care and any further details of the support you are receiving as a care leaver. If you have already registered with Student Finance as a Care Leaver, we just need to receive this same letter.
/ Adoption certificate
/ Court Order documents
Our team are here to support you through this process and beyond so do reach out to us with any questions. Even if you do not yet have any of the above evidence, please contact us to let us know so that we can begin to support you.
FOR STUDENTS WITH CARING RESPONSIBILITIES:
/ A doctor’s or consultant’s letter confirming the responsibility of caring for a close friend, relative or neighbour and any perceived impact on the student
/ A local authority carers’ assessment
/ A DLA letter that names you and must clearly state either higher or middle rate care component
/ Carer Allowance documentation from DWP showing the termination due to start of studies

Our University works hard to provide the best support and opportunities for Care Experienced students, from the guaranteed accommodation to check ins over christmas when many of us stay on campus, I know theres always someone there if I needed them. My favourite part of studying at Salford is that we’re such a diverse community, and there are so many people with so many different stories.

STUDENT FINANCE
You may be unsure about what exactly Student Finance can offer you during your studies. Let’s break it down.
Most students will apply to Student Finance for both a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan. The tuition fee loan is paid by student finance directly to the university and covers the cost of your course for each academic year. Student Finance also offers students support, via a maintenance loan, for the total length of your degree plus one additional ‘gift’ year.
The Student Finance Maintenance loan is money given to each student to help them fund their living costs whilst at university and this is usually means-tested, based on parental income. However, if you are a student that is estranged or care experienced, you may be able to request independent status.
This requires you to provide evidence to student finance and this is something that we can help you with.
If you have any questions at all about independent status with Student Finance, then please do reach out to our team on askUS@salford.ac.uk
If you have not yet applied for Student Finance, then you should do this as soon as possible. Once you are a registered student with us at Salford, you can contact our Money Matters team on moneymatters@salford.ac.uk as they can help you with this.
ACCOMMODATION
Finding somewhere to live can be a big worry, and we are here to offer you support that ensures your transition to university is smooth and that you have somewhere to call home during your studies.
The university partners with Campus Living Villages (CLV) who provide student accommodation and manage two of the Salford accommodation villages: Peel Park Quarter and John Lester and Eddie Coleman Courts. If you stay in either of these villages, we can offer added support:
/ CLV can offer flexible contracts, meaning you do not have to leave your accommodation over any of the holidays. This provides a lot more security and stability for you over the year as you will not have to worry about finding somewhere to live outside of the academic year and will prevent you becoming homeless during the holidays.
/ It can be arranged that you do not have to pay a deposit and rental advance up front, instead delaying it until you receive your first student loan payment. This takes away the worry of having an added cost that you cannot pay before you are receiving student finance.
/ If you would like to stay on longer than the first year, then we will ask you if you would like to carry on living there. PPQ is only for first year students, but we have arranged that care experienced and estranged students can stay if they want to.
/ The university also works with ‘Housing Hand’, who are the UK’s biggest rent guarantor provider. You will need a guarantor for most types of accommodation you may live in, and normally this guarantor is a parent or guardian. Housing Hand can act as a guarantor for all types of accommodation, although there is a fee for this. In your first year there is an exclusive University of Salford price that can be paid in instalments over the year (you will need to cover this yourself).
/ The university may be able to cover the cost of using Housing Hand during your second and third year if you are estranged or care experienced. If you can’t find a guarantor and can not afford this fee in your first year, then talk to us for advice.
/ The university is also a Unite Foundation university. The Unite Foundation offer a small number of free rooms within one of their accommodation blocks in Manchester for up to 3 years of undergraduate study for students that are either estranged or a care leaver. You can apply for this at thisisusatuni.org/ unite-foundation-scholarship/
HOMELESSNESS
For students that may not have family support to help out, it can be very easy to become homeless. A lot of the time this may not mean you are sleeping on the street: you could be sofa-surfing, living temporarily with relatives, or staying in a Foyer accommodation.
Once you are a student the university will not let you become homeless and there are various sources of support available to you. To access the help you need you should keep in contact with us at askUS@salford.ac.uk and make sure we are aware of your situation. We can help you!
You can also access free external support from Shelter (shelter.org.uk) who are a charity that specialise in helping those who are homeless or are struggling with bad housing.
WELLBEING AND DISABILITY SUPPORT
It is important that all students take care of their wellbeing while at university and there are plenty of resources available to help you do that.
Your first point of contact is the Specialist and Inclusive Support Team, and we can put you in contact with other support networks within the university depending on your needs. We can set up a one-toone appointment with you to make sure you are receiving all the help both during your application and after you arrive at the university.
The Wellbeing team (wellbeing@salford. ac.uk) can speak to you about any worries you have during your studies and, after meeting the team, can refer you on to counselling if necessary.
If you have an added support need the Disability Inclusion Service (disability@ salford.ac.uk) team can make sure that support is in place before you arrive at the university. There is also a Disabled Students’ Allowance that can help you pay for equipment, a non-medical helper, or just day-to-day costs. This is open to
those who have a mental health problem, long term illness or any other disability. You can find out more at gov.uk/disabledstudents-allowance-dsa
There are also external wellbeing support services that are made specifically for students. During the academic year you can contact Greater Manchester Nightline, a non-judgemental listening service that is run by students for students. You can find out more at manchester.nightline.ac.uk/
Should you ever wish to access counselling outside of university working hours, then Care First is a great resource that you can contact. Care First offer a free 24 hour telephone counselling service and can be contacted on 0800 970 1080
FINANCES AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT

/ The Salford Support Fund is the hardship fund for students who are experiencing unexpected financial hardship. You can apply for this fund by contacting askUS@salford.ac.uk
/ The Inspire Funding is £150 for each academic year you progress onto and this money can be spent on the online shop via the Inspire website salford-inspire.co.uk/
/ Students with a household income of under £25,000 and who apply to the university from an address that that has low uptake in Higher Education could be entitled to a further £350 uplift.
FOR STUDENTS THAT ARE ESTRANGED:
/ We offer up to £1100 per academic year for students that are estranged. For more information and for the eligibility criteria, you can visit our webpage or contact us directly.

For more information and for the eligibility criteria, you can visit our webpage or contact us directly. salford.ac.uk/askus/topics/ specialist-support/care-experienced
FOR STUDENTS THAT ARE EITHER CARE EXPERIENCED OR ESTRANGED:
/ The Campus Living Villages Community Bursary offers a rent rebate that is assessed on a needs basis if you are living at one of the two buildings owned by Campus Living Villages in Salford. This means that we can help you make your final rent instalment a little cheaper. If you are eligible for this then we will contact you directly.
FOR STUDENTS SEEKING SANCTUARY:
/ We offer 8 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate places on our Sanctuary Scholarship which offers successful applicants a place on their offered course of study without fees and up to £1100 bursary per academic year progressed on to. For more information on the scholarship, how to apply, and the eligibility criteria please visit our webpage or reach out to us directly. salford.ac.uk/askus/topics/ specialist-support/sanctuaryseekers
