Kristen Sauceda ’20 | Political science and public policy major, history minor

Kristen Sauceda’s horizons expanded beyond the classroom and across borders during her time at Redlands. Her fondest memories on campus were participating in mock Congress, connecting her education to real-life process. Through this experience, she discovered her strengths and a passion for diplomacy. Kristen studied abroad in Germany and traveled to 15 different countries to learn about politics, economics, business, and international relations as part of the IES Abroad European Union program. As a two-time Fulbright Student and global classroom mentor, Kristen worked in Madrid, Spain building a Model United Nations (UN) program for high-school students from the ground up. As a first-year student, Evan Sanford asked about resurrecting the University radio station, KDAWG. To his surprise, he was given an enthusiastic yes and the keys to the building which housed the old equipment. He spent the next two years learning everything he could about running a radio station, from raising the funds and renovating

the space to staffing the station and creating content. For his own show, Inside the Studio with Evan Sanford, he interviewed every speaker that came to campus including journalist James Fallows, actor Mario Lopez, and anthropologist Jane Goodall. He now produces the 11 o’clock news for KESQ, a CBS affiliate in Palm Springs, CA.

“My experiences at KDAWG helped me secure my first job at ABC-7 in Glendale, California after graduation. Thanks to my time at Redlands, I was able to connect the dots between media, business, and my interest in working with people.”

“Dr. Lum’s decades of experience are more insightful than any textbook.”
Johnson Ung ’17 | Chemistry and biology major

Despite having graduated from the University of Redlands almost 50 years apart, Larry Lum ’69, M.D., D.Sc., and Johnson Ung ’17 share a fascination with science and a commitment to hard work. Through their Redlands connection, Ung was recommended for a position as an assistant in Lum’s lab. Now these fellow Redlands alumni work side by side at the University of Virginia conducting immunotherapy cancer research. Lum was one of three principal investigators to receive a $17 million grant to help develop new technology to cure patients with type 1 diabetes. Johnson is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in microbiology at the University of Virginia.

We step up and act.

“I want people in the Rocket Club to be able to get a better sense of what’s going on in the world of aerospace and engineering. We look at current designs and proposals, and design and launch small rockets.”

Anthony Razo ’21 started the Rocket Club to give students even more STEM-related club options. He’s always been fascinated by space, and in high school was a part of a project researching the effects of zero gravity on microscopic organisms. His project was selected to fly to the International Space Station.

Wherever your path takes you, you’ll have career-relevant skills, hands-on experience in your field, and problem-solving abilities.

“I really valued the fact that I was able to talk to my professors on both personal and academic levels. I felt encouraged by my classmates, teammates, and advisors all the time. Being a student-athlete was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.”

Sadie Pickering ’20 | Environmental studies and business management double-major

After growing up in the Pacific Northwest, Sadie Pickering ’20 came to the University of Redlands in search of an environmental studies program but ended up finding much more. “I knew I’d be able to be a part of multiple organizations on campus while playing lacrosse, and that’s what drew me to Redlands,” she says. Pickering, who was a student-athlete, a member of Maroon and Grey (a student organization that works with the University’s fundraising and community relations

team), and the recruiting chair for the Kappa Pi Zeta sorority, says that the connections she made with other students on campus were the best part of her college experience. Being a student-athlete requires discipline, and Pickering’s efforts are displayed both on and off the field. Pickering was a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference player of the week and an Order of Omega outstanding Greek-athlete, selected by the University’s Panhellenic Council.

The University of Redlands became home to the first contemplative classroom in the United States in 2007. This, coupled with their own areas of expertise, enabled Professors Celine Ko, Fran Grace, and Lisa Olson to come together to conduct research on the benefits for students in a holistic learning environment, which includes meditation and other methods for inner inquiry. Students show not only increased wellness, but also mental clarity in the classroom, focused attention, and increased motivation.
