Orientation programme and official start of the academic year for first-year students

2019

Message from the Dean: Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

Welcome to the University of Pretoria, a leading research-intensive university in Africa. Congratulations on your excellent matric results and your wise decision to join the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, the largest and most diverse faculty of its kind in South Africa. This is a faculty where you can fulfil your dreams, explore new ideas and discover that science is fun. Be at the cutting edge of science and think beyond the normal boundaries in this century of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). Here you can pursue careers ranging from the proverbial A to Z: from an actuary to a zoologist; from a forensic scientist to a meteorologist; from a teacher to a professor. Mathematics, culinary science, physics – the sky is the limit… The Faculty has substantial research capabilities, underpinned by a pool

of excellent researchers, top-class research institutes and centres, and a well-established international collaboration network. Our research focuses, among others, on solving grand challenges related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as no poverty, zero hunger, good health and wellbeing, quality education, and clean water and sanitation. We use innovative teaching practices and new technologies to convey knowledge. We prepare dynamic and innovative graduates for a wide variety of disciplines. Our Faculty’s degrees are internationally recognised. Once you graduate here, you will have had access to programmes that allow you to be ready for the workplace or able to start your own business and contribute to the economy by job creation.

I am confident that you will find your experience to be a remarkably rewarding one. The FLY@UP campaign (“The Finish Line is Yours”) aims to help you graduate on time. We put everything in place to enable you to succeed. My advice to you: Work hard, continuously and do not hesitate to utilise all the available development and support opportunities so that you can realise your full potential. We look forward to your contribution to our dynamic academic community.

Prof Jean Lubuma Dean: Natural and Agricultural Sciences
