Message from the Dean It is our pleasure to welcome you to this Faculty, home of the liberal arts. You enter a stimulating environment that will broaden your intellectual horizons, and help you achieve personal and professional success through the best possible learning experience. Our university now features for the first time in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. As the most diverse Faculty at the University we offer an exciting range of programmes and discipline-based majors. The BA-programme offers students the opportunity to select and combine their core and elective modules from a range of disciplines. Other programmes specify either partially or fully the modules that students need to take to specialise in a chosen field. The vast offerings in the Faculty can be daunting and students are advised to seek guidance from lecturers in the Faculty to assist them in considering all aspects carefully before making a final decision on the most appropriate choice for their interests and career ambitions. Areas of study span the breadth and depth of the human experience. We are home to 17 academic departments, two teaching and research units, five centres, an institute and a psychology clinic. We offer programmes across disciplines that bring together ideas and practice, in a place where you will think hard about what you stand for. A rich array of choices awaits you to prepare you with knowledge and skills to become capable of making sense of the world and ready for a lifetime of learning. Your dedicated lecturers will ensure you receive the best tools to learn deeply and to continue learning across your lifetime. Take advantage of everything we offer: ask questions, meet new people, attend events, and fully explore all we have to offer with the exciting opportunities to transform your life at TUKS’s Faculty of Humanities.

Faculty of Humanities 2016/17

Undergraduate programmes Important information on undergraduate programmes for 2017 The following persons will be considered for admission: a candidate who is in possession of a certificate that is deemed by the University to be equivalent to the required Grade 12 certificate with university endorsement; a candidate who is a graduate from another tertiary institution or has been granted the status of a graduate of such an institution; and a candidate who is a graduate of another faculty at the University of Pretoria. Candidates who comply with the minimum subject requirements and achievement levels as well as the APS requirements of these programmes will be granted placement in the programmes, subject to the availability of space. The abovementioned is not applicable to selection programmes. To retain admission, learners will be expected to obtain an APS of at least 28 in Grade 12. Prospective students who have already been granted provisional admission in these programmes, but obtained at least an APS of 27 in Grade 12, will be considered by the Admission Committee should space be available. The Admission Committee of the Faculty of Humanities will consider these students once the results of the National Benchmark Test (NBT) are available and depending on the availability of space. The Faculty will assess satisfactory performance in the NBT in the light of its commitment to ensure that an appropriate proportion of the applicants will be drawn from the disadvantaged category of the population. Applicants who meet the minimum APS requirement, but who do not comply with the subject requirements must write the NBT. Life Orientation is excluded when calculating the APS. ‘I am an honours student in International Relations and in the Faculty of Humanities we can be ourselves and focus on what it means to be fully human. I have been offered many opportunities to develop my skills and this has complimented my individuality. Vincent van Gogh wrote, “Whoever loves much, performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is done well.” Serving as the Chairperson of House Humanities for the term 2014/15 was a privilege. The Executive Committee were passionate and dedicated and together we presented the Zuriel Oduwole seminar (called, A promising Africa), boot camps, organ donor awareness days, a tutoring programme at the Bramley Children’s home; a first-year braai, a work and study opportunities pool project and an essay competition.’ Sumien Deetlefs ‘I obtained my BMus degree cum laude in 2014. I have performed with various orchestras and conductors and also had the opportunity to perform at various festivals, such as the Music for All, Klein Karoo Klassique and the KZNPO Youth Concerto Festival. Throughout my career, I have won several competitions including the Arts Trust National Piano Competition (2009), First Atterbury National Piano Competition (2011), Unisa South African Music Scholarship Competition (2012), Philip H.Moore Competition (2013) and the ATKV Muziq Competition (2014). I was also a prize winner at the Unisa 120th Anniversary Bursary Competition (2014) and the Unisa National Piano Competition (2015). I am also a member of the Golden Key Society.’ Willem de Beer

Faculty of Humanities 2016/17

Bachelor of Arts/Professional programmes Why a programme in the Humanities? A variety of disciplines and programmes equip students for a wide range of professions. Specialised and more general training programmes develop high-level critical thinking skills and the capacity to communicate effectively in the world of work. The lecturers who teach in the Faculty are all specialists in their respective fields. The Faculty modifies its undergraduate and postgraduate offerings from time to time with a view to remaining competitive on both the national and international tertiary education fronts. Students who register for programmes offered in this Faculty will be able to do the following: equip themselves with discipline-specific knowledge, insight and skills; develop analytical skills that are in demand in both the South African and the international labour market; acquire critical thinking and problem-solving skills; conduct research; and talk and write authoritatively about their chosen field of study.

BA – Bachelor of Arts What does the programme entail?

The BA degee is chosen by more students than any other programme. It is adaptable enabling students to explore disciplines and to proceed with those most appropriate to their interests and abilities.

Programme

At first-year level Academic Information Management (AIM) and Academic Literacy (ALL) are fundamental modules (compulsory). In compiling their programmes students have an extraordinarily wide choice. See page 5 of this brochure or the alphabetical list of modules in the Faculty’s Yearbook at www.up.ac.za/yearbooks. Students determine the focus of their studies (normally the two majors taken up to the third year level) as well as the supporting subjects they decide to include in the programme. First year: Select four disciplines and complete two semester modules (or four quarter modules) from each discipline plus one module of at least six credits. Second year: At the beginning of the second year of study decide which three of the four disciplines completed at firstyear level will be continued with for the full year. Third year: Select any two of the three disciplines completed at second-year level and complete two semester modules (or four quarter modules) from each. Note that students need not decide on these two core disciplines at the beginning of their first year of study, but have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with disciplines before deciding on the focus for their final year (and possibly for postgraduate studies). With a view to postgraduate studies, students choosing psychology as core discipline have to include research at second-year and third-year level in their BA programme. Modules from other faculties may be included in the BA programme on the following conditions: Only two at first-year level and one of these at second- and third-year level. Refer to the list on page 6 of this brochure. The admission requirements for these disciplines are in the yearbooks of the faculties concerned.

Postgraduate studies

Since the programme allows for two core disciplines, students have more than one option for postgraduate study. Therefore students have an alternative, should they not comply with the selection requirements for postgraduate study in a specific discipline. With good planning, students who complete the BA programme have an equal chance of being selected for postgraduate studies in a particular subject as those who enrol for the more specialised programmes.

Specialised programmes Bachelor and Bachelor of Arts in the Visual and Performing Arts BA (Fine Arts) Selection procedures

Please refer to the table on page 3.

What does the programme entail?

Information design is a career with unusual and challenging opportunities. The successful information designer (visual communication designer) is a professional, highly qualified person who plays a decisive strategic role in creating the contemporary visual environment. We live in a world in which we are surrounded by words and images and it is the designer’s responsibility to provide original solutions to mass communication problems.

What does the programme entail?

BA (Fine Arts) covers a broad spectrum of professional art practices. The two majors of the degree are the studio-based component of art practice, Fine Arts (BKK), and Professional Art Practice (VIT) and a theoretical subject, Visual Cultural Studies (VKK).

The functions of information design can be broadly defined in terms of the following four intentions: Establish visual identities for people, organisations or products. Visually inform, direct, explain, describe and educate. Persuade people to change their behaviours. Create an entertaining, aesthetic or intriguing experience.

BA (Fine Arts) is a four-year programme that incorporates training in the disciplines of art practice such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, new media and photography. Once fundamental aspects of these disciplines are mastered, increasingly more challenging goals are set that often require inter- and multidisciplinary skills and knowledge, such as installation art, public art and performance art. The role played by multimedia in the form of projections, video and digital art has also become a major form of expression in the fine arts programme.

Information designers execute projects in three types of media: print, screen-based and 3D media. Typical design applications include: Corporate identity and branding Editorial design Advertising and promotion Design for social development Imaging and visualisation Broadcast design Information visualisation

The first two years of BKK entail compulsory projects in various media; the third year focuses on personal development of medium, context and content; and in the fourth year, students work towards their first professional solo exhibition with all the theoretical, professional and practical skills that are associated with an exhibition of good academic quality.

Graduates will leave the programme with confidence and a versatility that will enable them to establish themselves in any of the above areas of professional practice. They can expect to be knowledgeable about current developments in professional practice and to be sensitive to how design can impact society and bring about social change.

The subject Professional Art Practice (VIT) is a three-year subject that is offered within the BA (Fine Arts) programme. This subject focuses on the interdependence and interrelationship of the visual arts and industry. Students are given projects that draw their attention to the spaces and situations of their environment including community-based projects, such as public art projects.

Core modules

BA – Baccalaureus Artium

BA (Spraak-Taalpatologie)

Wat behels die program?

Departementele keuring

Kernmodules

Studente ontvang onderrig in instrumentale musiek of sang (klassiek of jazz).

‘I studied BA and majored in Psychology. I am currently enrolled for a BEd Honours in Educational Psychology, I never anticipated that my life would change so drastically the day I walked into the Human Sciences Building. The programme challenged to go beyond what I knew and believed. I refused the limitations placed on me by my society and my past and over the years I have learned how to become a game changer in my community. Exposure to incredible lectures and different schools of thought promoted independence and self-exploration and in this Faculty I have became confident in taking ownership of my thoughts and ideas.’ Buhle Tshabalala

‘I completed my BA with distinction and I received academic colours from the Student Representative Council. I am Golden Key member and was the best Criminology student in 2014. Currently, I am completing my honours degree in Criminology, which is internationally recognised. The University of Pretoria has equipped me with the skills and knowledge that I require to make a meaningful contribution to human development. My dream job would be to work for the United Nations as a criminologist, and I hope to work alongside policy makers. I am interested in developing procedures that would help to maintain international peace and security while promote human rights.’ Chrysander Kelsey Pawunkumar

‘The Department of Sociology has provided me with opportunities for personal growth, as well as exposure to the workplace and being appointed as a teaching assistant allowed me to put theory to practice with research projects. As a sports lover, I played netball for House Humanities and TuksNetbal and I served on the Student Sports Committee. I was awarded an achievement bursary, an honours merit award, a NSFAS postgraduate scholarship and I am a Golden Key member. I am currently enrolled for a BSocSci (Hons) Industrial Sociology and Labour Studies degree, and working as a first-year Sociology tutor. This programme is versatile, and allows one to branch off into many sectors. I have not yet decided whether I want to pursue a career in academia, research or follow a corporate career.’ Dimakatso Lucy Poopedi

‘I am a speech-language therapist and have always wanted to help people in a medical field. This degree and training helped to prepare me for my community service year at a government hospital in Rustenburg, which I am near to completing. My dream job is to work in a rehabilitation centre for patients who have suffered strokes and other brain injuries. My university achievements include Golden Key membership; I passed the BA (Speech-Language Pathology) with distinction, and I was awarded the P de V Pienaar Award for Best student in Speech Pathology – Academic in 2015.’ Melissa Pike

‘I completed the BA (Speech-language Pathology) degree at Tuks at the end of 2014 and was awarded the P de V Pienaar Award for Best Student in Speech Pathology – Academic in 2015. I loved the programme! I enjoy being able to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families. The variety of practical work in the programme and our supportive lecturers prepared us well for the work environment. I am currently in my community service year, working at a hospital in the North-West province. In the future, I hope to work at a neurological rehabilitation centre.’ Caitlin Pike
