I’d like to join a sports club The University of Nottingham, in partnership with our Students’ Union, has over 70 sports clubs so there really is something for everyone. As well as running the competitive teams, our clubs offer a huge range of sessions from beginner to advanced level. Regular trips and socials mean they are a great way to meet new people at university as well as offering opportunities to volunteer on the club committees.

How can I get involved?

All our sports clubs will be at the Welcome Fair, so you can come along and meet them in person. Many will host trials for their teams and tasters so you can try the club out before joining – for dates and times visit nottingham.ac.uk/sport/welcome If you’ve missed these events, don’t worry – you can contact our sports clubs throughout the year and they will be happy to help you get involved with their activities. Play for fun with Engage Whether you are unsure about joining a team, have a busy schedule or want to try something new, our Engage programme offers the perfect chance for you to have some fun and get involved.

Try as many sports as possible

From kayak to netball, dodgeball to shooting, basketball to polo – there really is something for everyone. You don’t have to commit to going every week and can take part in as many sessions as you can fit in. All levels of ability are welcome so whether you are a complete beginner or have a base knowledge, the sessions will cater for you.

There’s always a friendly face

All sessions are student-led with some being coached. These sessions are more structured and include drills and game play with a coach or instructor - one thing you can be sure of is that you’ll always be made to feel welcome.

Don’t worry about specialist clothing

Everything that you need to take part in the session will be provided, including all specialist clothing and equipment. Just make sure you are wearing something that you can get active in!

Value for money

All sessions held on our campuses are free with your University of Nottingham sports and fitness membership or just £3 per session for non-members (for some activities hosted offcampus the cost may be higher).

Most of our sessions don’t require booking so you can just turn up, register at reception and play.

Compete on campus in an intramural sports league Join over 3,000 University of Nottingham students playing weekly in our intramural sports leagues (IMS). It’s the perfect way to enjoy competitive sport and make new friends right here on campus.

The University of Nottingham offers one of the largest programmes across the country and you can choose from the following sports.

• Badminton • Basketball (mixed) • Dodgeball • Football (11-a-side) • Football (7-a-side) • Football (women’s 7-a-side) • Futsal • Hockey (mixed) • Netball • Rugby Union • Squash • Table tennis • Tennis • Volleyball Many of the competitions act as qualifiers for the Tri-Campus games (page 28) where you could represent Team UK against students from our China and Malaysia campuses.

League winners will also get the chance to play against Loughborough University’s IMS teams in our annual IMS Varsity event.

How can I get involved?

IMS teams can be made up of any group; hall teams, society teams, course teams or a group of friends. To join an existing team, contact your hall, society or sport sec to find out what’s available. Join the #GreenandGold Competing…

If you’d like to represent the University of Nottingham, then we have over a hundred teams competing in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues and events each year. These teams will host home fixtures on campus and travel to play against other universities.

We have a proud history of sporting success and have been in the top ten of the BUCS league tables for 30 years. Last year University of Nottingham teams won over 40 league titles and our national champions included the men’s table tennis team and women’s squash. The Green and Gold also went on to win 22 national individual titles including Li Lian Yang in the women’s badminton singles and Coline Aumard in the women’s squash singles. Other notable sporting achievements include Maria Tsaptsinos who won a Table Tennis bronze medal for Team England at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Outside of BUCS, a number of sports clubs provide students with the extra challenge of competing in a National League.

Spectating…

Many of our teams compete in the BUCS weekly leagues against other universities to win league titles and reach national finals and they need as many of you as possible to head out and support.

New for 2018/19, the University of Nottingham Sport will be selecting a number of fixtures during term time for live coverage. We will be going all out for our chosen “Match in Focus” to get as many students behind the #GreenandGold as possible to make the home advantage count! Health and fitness programmes to reach your goals Want to get fitter, healthier or just more active…whatever your workout goals, our team of qualified fitness instructors are on hand with a range of complimentary services as part of your membership.

• Fitness suite inductions: learn the basics of using the huge array of equipment safely and effectively • Personal fitness programme: let a member of the team give you some fresh ideas to get the most out of your time in the fitness suite or get you back on track.

• Personal fitness programme review: after four-six weeks it’s time to change things up, book in with the same instructor or use the knowledge of another to get some new hints and tips.

• 1-2-1 training session: make the most of our expertise with a session in boxing pad work, kettlebells, indoor cycling/ watt bike, stretching and flexibility, nutritional advice, power plate and body MOTs. • Lifting clinics: ideal if you’re new to weight training and want to learn the basics of the three major lift styles: deadlift, press and squat.

Sport and fitness for everyone We understand that physical activity and sport can have a positive impact on the wellbeing of our students. Our dedicated Disability Sports Officer works closely with key groups to develop our inclusive offer - ensuring that we best support the needs of the community and enable all students to be active whilst at University.

Work out with us

We offer 1-2-1 supported fitness sessions with our friendly fitness instructors as well as adapted wellbeing workouts and classes to ensure disabled students can make the most of our extensive facilities. Our referral scheme via the Disability Support and Mental Health Advisory teams also offers discounted UoN sports and fitness membership to eligible disabled students.

Train with a buddy

If you want to get fit or prepare for a competition, our Sports Buddy scheme pairs up like-minded students to support each other during their work outs. You can volunteer as a buddy or request a companion for your training.

Volunteer with us

Students can volunteer within our Wheelchair basketball or Goalball clubs or join our Leadership Academy (see page 20), where our student leaders can access training and opportunities in local special schools.

Join a sports club

Our popular Wheelchair basketball and Goalball clubs welcome disabled and non-disabled students and several clubs run specific inclusive Engage sessions including archery, athletics, climbing, equestrian, handball, swimming and trampoline.

Over 55 clubs have also pledged commitment to our award-winning Welfare in Sport programme, which promotes mental health awareness in sport.

NewU

NewU is a University run campaign for students, which focuses on providing support through the delivery of mental health, healthy eating and stress busting workshops, also encouraging physical activity through our Engage programme.

Welfare in Sport

Welfare in Sport is a campaign group run by students at the University. The aim of the group is to raise awareness of mental health issues amongst members of sports clubs, remove barriers for students participating in sport, and to provide a platform for sports clubs at UoN to improve welfare support for all their members.

Club Welfare

All of our sports clubs have a welfare officer, who along with club committees receive training and support from the University and Student Union, to ensure that they are providing a supportive environment for their student members to play, train and compete in.

Supported Fitness Sessions We provide disabled students and students with mental health conditions the opportunity to access 1-2-1 supported sessions in the gym environment with our friendly fitness instructor team.

We hope that by encouraging an open and inclusive atmosphere through our fitness offer and sports clubs that more people will feel able to join us, make friends and keep active during their time in Nottingham.

Lead on and off the field Sport is an incredibly powerful tool and we want our student leaders to be at the forefront of the latest programmes and initiatives focussing on young people staying healthy and making positive changes. Our Leadership Academy offers a range of programmes and support to get involved and develop your skills along the way.

Inspire your local community

Working closely with our Widening Participation team, our leaders work in local schools to deliver programmes using sport to raise aspirations and drive behavioural change. Our training programme includes opportunities with the world-renowned Laureus Foundation and their deliver partner Magic Bus. These programmes are perfect for those considering a career in education and / or interested in psychology.

Gain coaching qualifications

You can apply for our qualification fund to study for national recognised coaching qualifications. We offer plenty of options to use your skills amongst your peers, leaders can volunteer within sports clubs, intramural sport, the Engage programme or our disability sport initiatives. We also offer a Sports Leadership Module on the popular Nottingham Advantage Award (NAA), allowing you to gain credits towards the official NAA Accreditation on your degree transcript.

Tri-Campus Games

Unique within higher education, this event sees students from across our three international campuses – Nottingham, Malaysia and China – compete against each other in a range of sports and challenges. Taking it in turns to host at each campus, it provides an amazing sporting and educational exchange for our qualifying IMS (intramural sports) teams and selected sports clubs members who compete to represent Team UK. The eleventh Tri-Campus Games is set to take place in June 2019 in Malaysia.

Nottingham Varsity Series

Each year the University of Nottingham takes on local rivals Nottingham Trent University in the annual Varsity series, with the best sportsmen and women from both institutions competing in some of Nottingham’s biggest sporting venues.

Led by our Students’ Union, highlights include the sell-out crowd at Motorpoint Arena for the Ice Hockey fixture – the largest Varsity game outside the United States.

A heady mix of fun and rivalry, Varsity is a chance for our athletes to play on the big stage and for everyone to get behind the #GreenandGold!
