FOLLOW MY LEAD

Upon our arrival at the Rodriguez home, five-year-old Lakshmi, wearing her dinosaur backpack and sunshine-yellow hair ribbon, proudly announced herself by waving a hand and declaring, “Follow my lead!” One couldn’t help but smile and wonder at her natural confidence and energy. After spending time with her parents, it made perfect sense.

Our students and alumni recognize the importance of degree completion to prepare for professional opportunities with more confidence and skill; often sharing that achieving that milestone has helped them overcome workplace hurdles to career advancement. Equally meaningful is the power of degree completion to enrich their lives and their families’ lives.

Siddarth Sosa Rodriguez ’12, ’14G and Griselle Da Corte Suarez ‘15G are proud alumni ambassadors who graciously invited us to their home for a conversation to learn more about their motivation to attend UNH, the alignment of their programs and careers with their values, and how achieving their degrees has influenced their life as a family.

Siddartha and Grisel’s professional lives – through work in the nonprofit sector, military, and federal government - reflect their values of service to others and the community. Currently, Grisel is working for Easterseals NH, a mission-driven human services agency, where she has been employed for over a decade. Siddartha works for the U.S. Department of State, in addition to his 20-year career serving as a member of the New Hampshire

National Guard and a beloved faculty member at their alma mater, UNH College of Professional Studies.

Each developed an ethic of service early in their lives. As immigrants to the U.S., Siddartha from the Dominican Republic at 11 years old and Grisel from Venezuela as a young professional, they faced the challenges of learning a new language and assimilating to American culture. Siddartha describes that their backgrounds have led to a broader, more inclusive view of what it means to be human. He shares his motivation to serve in the military and work for the federal government:

“I view the United States as a nation of immigrants, as many of us can trace our lineage to other countries. From this perspective, I feel a shared connection with the broader community. However, I also feel a strong desire to contribute to our country in appreciation of the opportunities I have received and to support the ongoing growth and development of our dynamic nation.”

For Grisel, it is a also true that moving between cultures can create a unique perspective on identity and purpose for their daughter, Lakshmi.

“I hope that our diverse family composition will provide our daughter with a more holistic view of what it is to exist. I hope she understands that no matter where we are, or where we come from, we are all looking to become the best version of ourselves. The only difference is that we do it in different ways. At the core, we are all the same.”

The military offered Siddartha a structured path for career development that opened up future career possibilities for him within and outside of the military, including postsecondary education. While a competitive job market initially motivated Siddartha to return to college, he realized how much he enjoyed school and ultimately completed two bachelor’s degrees. He describes pursuing a master’s degree in leadership as a natural transition that enabled him to further develop a growth mindset.

“I always wanted to do more with my life. I had the feeling that I have more to offer and to do that would require more education. UNH CPS made it possible, and I enjoyed every moment. It is one of the reasons I now teach: to give others the same sense of confidence and possibility in their lives.”

Grisel notes that the growth mindset, which positively impacts them as professionals, also influences their approach as parents.

“We all want to give our children the best opportunities to learn and grow. We want to see them succeed but most importantly to help them become great human beings. Part of my daughter’s happiness will come from knowing she has reached her full potential, and I believe education plays an important role in that process. Raising good children who will become well-rounded individuals is our best contribution to the world.”

For this couple, creating meaning is as much about how they live their lives as what they do. Siddartha describes that they have clarity about what they are working towards and stay curious to learn and grow. And, of course, they love Lakshmi with their whole hearts.

“My hope is that she does become the best version of herself. Education is and will be an integral part of achieving that goal. The more we learn, the more we grow. I always tell my students that they are not just learning for a job; they are learning to know themselves better. The more they know themselves, the better they will be able to serve others. I hope to teach that to my daughter as well.”

Faculty Profile

Meet Your Instructor

What attracted you to pursue a career focused on leadership and management?

I was attracted to the field of leadership and management because I was a leader in the corporate sector. I found it fascinating to study the different types of leaders and the various dynamics of an organization.

What was your college experience like?

As I was the first person in my family to go to college, a key to my success was having wonderful mentors who helped encourage and guide me in reaching my goals. (Even though my parents had no/or limited experience with college themselves, they encouraged and expected me to attend and complete my degree.) I was also highly self-motivated to learn as much as I could. This drive and determination led me to obtain my bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees. I had a wonderful college experience every step of the way.

What do you enjoy most about teaching adult students?

Most of my students are working professionals juggling school with family and volunteer commitments, and some are even on military deployments. What I like most about teaching adults is that they connect learning concepts with their real-life personal and professional experiences. I love it when my

students tell me that my class or an example that I used helped them think about things in a different perspective or that my class helped them become a better leader.

What’s your favorite course to teach and why?

One of my favorite courses to teach is LD810—Change Management and Communication, which I redesigned. It is primarily focused on self-reflection to help students understand and gauge how they perceive and process change. Every time I teach this course, I am flooded with messages from students about how the management simulation activity is an eye-opening learning experience. Messages like these are why I love teaching!

What is a key advantage of studying leadership?

Being an effective leader requires a great deal of personal self-reflection and emotional intelligence. Studying emotional intelligence makes students more aware of their strengths and weaknesses so that they can better collaborate and lead others. In our leadership courses, students participate in meaningful weekly discussions in which they are encouraged to share their professional experiences as it relates to the course material. Our use of educational simulations allows students to apply course concepts into real-life scenarios so they can experience various opportunities and challenges that an organization may experience.

The Best Advice I Ever Received...

The opportunity to influence, guide, and inspire others toward a common goal motivates many experienced professionals to seek leadership positions. Yet leadership is challenging even under the best circumstances. For this reason, successful leaders benefit from the guidance and wisdom of others at all stages of their careers.

We asked several outstanding organizational leaders from diverse industries in New Hampshire to answer the question: What is the best professional advice you’ve ever received, and why is it so meaningful? Their answers reveal the characteristics they have worked to develop, including emotional intelligence, resilience, strategic thinking, tolerance, and charisma.

IT Industry

So much of the wisdom I’ve absorbed has been from reading books by great leaders and then reflecting, discussing with other leaders, and applying it. Gates Law comes to mind:

Gates Law: “Most people overestimate what they can achieve in a year and underestimate what they can achieve in ten years.” Setting your sights on a longer-term vision is essential. Ten years is enough to do something truly transformative with a team and positively impact generations. One year may be enough time to try something and succeed or fail. If you stay aligned with your vision, mission and core values over a longer period, great things will happen.

Mainstay Technologies

Mission: Mainstay’s mission is to give more than we get supported by our vision to positively impact every life we touch.

Health Care Industry

The best career advice I have ever received was from my dad - “Don’t ever forget where you came from.” He didn’t mean geographically or even my familial roots, but as a staff nurse working nights for many years. My roots were at the bedside, caring for patients with a team that wanted what was best for our patients. My dad’s advice was meaningful because he wanted to ensure that I remembered how I felt working a nursing shift with limited resources that many don’t want to work. We learned how to depend on each other, and to reach out when necessary. We may have felt alone at times, but being part of a tight and dedicated team were qualities that could be carried through my career.

Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center

Mission: To advance health through research, education, clinical practice and community partnerships, providing each person the best care, in the right place, at the right time, every time.

Human Services Industry

Maureen Beauregard, President & CEO

I am blessed to have had and continue to have mentors, all community/state-wide leaders, who have guided me throughout my career. The career advice that rises to the top is: “Do what’s right, even when it’s hard,” which means keeping the mission and those served by the organization first. This mentality transcends any one individual, department, or leader and can lead to difficult, but necessary decisions. It is an honor to lead an organization that serves thousands of our neighbors each year, and it is incumbent upon all of Easterseals NH & VT to keep these folks front and center.

Easterseals NH & VT

Mission: Our mission is to provide plans of care comprised of thoughtfully integrated services that help those with varied abilities live, learn, work, and play throughout their lifetimes.

Nonprofit Industry

Anthony Poore, President & CEO

My grandfather (Hiram Stewart Poore) would tell me: “Understand a little about a lot and be prepared to travel between the White House and an outhouse when necessary”.

His advice encouraged me to always seek diverse academic, personal, and professional opportunities that broaden my world view and potential for service. His words also encouraged me to be nimble and humble in the approach to my professional and personal aspirations.

Jennifer MacDonald, Chief Operating Officer

With deep gratitude to the leaders and loved ones who have impacted my journey, I have adopted a single, clear mantra that informs my aspirations to contribute to my community, the nation, and the world: “People first, mission always.” When career advancement is approached not as personal elevation, but as an escalating contribution to humanity alongside a team, astounding transformation is possible. The relentless pursuit of benefit to others – to people and mission – brings a collective source of joy and fulfillment to our team at the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute. Here in ReGen Valley, we are seeking to build the epicenter of a new industry, generate inclusive growth and opportunity, and enable the equitable distribution of novel therapies that will save millions of lives.

Nurture Your Leadership

Adult students often arrive at UNH with leadership experience gained from the workplace or community involvement; where they’ve honed skills in managing resources, adaptability, and teamwork. Our active duty and veteran students gain distinct leadership capabilities through military training and within the context of the most challenging environments.

Alumnus Derek Reiss '20, a military veteran student who graduated with a bachelor's in communications studies, describes that expert faculty, educational research, industry resources, and course-based discussions provided him with additional leadership knowledge which he applied in realworld scenarios.

“Exposure to different leadership styles and philosophies helped me identify and cultivate my own. I work daily toward emphasizing my attributes like empathy, integrity, strategic thinking, and resilience and improving in areas that need development, such as statistical acumen.”

Self-awareness of your leadership style and an understanding of the diverse approaches leaders can take to positively influence their teams can be transformative.
