How is uni different to school?

University is not like school, being in class 9am till 3pm, Monday to Friday. You won’t have a teacher reminding you to do your homework or hand in that assignment. At uni, you design your own timetable, making sure you have time for study, work and socialising. You’re responsible for turning up to class and getting your assessments in on time.

Your results are all up to you.

It’s important to choose subjects that you enjoy, that you do well in and that match your career goals. Try to keep your options open, because you might find that your interests change between Year 10 and when you finish school.

Many of our degrees are recognised internationally, which means you could live and work overseas. But don’t wait until you graduate! Our overseas student exchange program means you can combine study and travel in one of our 100+ partner universities around the world!

If you’re planning to complete the HSC and you’re thinking about going to uni, you need to choose HSC subjects that will give you an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).

To be eligible for an ATAR you must complete at least 10 units of ATAR courses.

Once you’ve met the requirements for an ATAR, the subjects you choose for Years 11 and 12 should also reflect the degree you plan to study at uni. To help you work out what they are, refer to the subjects listed as Assumed Knowledge and Recommended Studies in this brochure. Studying these subjects may also make you eligible for bonus points as part of the University of Newcastle’s Year 12 Bonus Points Scheme.

High Performing Students Program This program gives you the opportunity to study first year university courses while you’re still at high school. Courses are 15 weeks long and there is a course from each faculty area on offer. Eligible students must be performing well in their studies, and have the support of their school and their parent/guardian.

Entry options UAC The Universities Admissions Centre (NSW and ACT) is the central office that receives and processes applications for admission to most undergraduate degrees, advanced diploma and diploma courses at participating tertiary institutions.

High ATAR Guarantee If you choose an eligible UON degree as your first preference and receive an ATAR of 90 or above, we guarantee you an offer to study at UON. Bonus Points for Regional Students HSC students who study in certain regional or rural postcode areas are awarded an additional four bonus points through this scheme.

This includes schools and TAFE colleges with postcodes in the Hunter, Central Coast, Central West, Northern Rivers, Mid-North Coast, New England, Western Plains and Broken Hill mail centres (excludes entry in to the Bachelor of Medicine – Joint Medical Program).

Things you need to know Assumed knowledge These are subjects you should study before starting your degree, as classes will be taught on the assumption that you have a certain level of knowledge before you begin.

ATAR The ATAR is a measure of academic achievement in the HSC that helps universities to rank applicants for selection to tertiary education courses. It is a score between 0 and 99.95.

Bachelor degree This is the university level qualification for entry into many professions, like nursing, teaching or engineering. It’s also the term used to describe the program studied to achieve an undergraduate qualification, like a Bachelor of Arts degree. It takes an average of three to five years of full-time study to complete.

Cut-off The cut-off is the minimum rank for entry into a particular University of Newcastle degree. This is the rank of the last person admitted to the degree. The 2015 cut-offs listed in this brochure are an indication only and change each year according to demand and the number of places available.

Recommended studies These are HSC subjects that are related to the degree.

They’re not compulsory, but you’ll find that they help prepare you for your uni studies.

Undergraduate An undergraduate is a student who is studying for a bachelor degree but has not yet graduated.

Scholarships UON has a number of scholarships available to help with study costs, including textbooks, fees, accommodation and living expenses. Scholarships range from $500 right through to $15,000 per year.

Many of the scholarships on offer consider academic performance, but we also award scholarships for research, sport, industry, equity and to Indigenous students.
