C H A N N E L I N G PA S S I O N I N T O PU R P OS E “What do you want to be when you grow up?” As a young girl navigating small-town life in Thomson, Ga., Savannah Lewis certainly didn’t have the answer. But she always had a strong interest in math and science. Savannah may not have had many STEM field role models, but she did have two sources of inspiration — two influential people who taught her the power of perseverance.

“After looking into the engineering program, I felt as though UK was the best choice for me.”

“When I was in middle school, my parents went back to school to earn their associate degrees,” Savannah said. “That really inspired me, because my parents didn’t put an expiration date on their dreams.” So, she decided to chase hers.

She has reached many milestones throughout her engineering journey, from accepting a co-op position with the National Air and Space Intelligence Center to being awarded the 2020 Outstanding Junior Award from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

Lewis dedicated herself in school, and when it came time to decide where to continue her education, she wanted a place that would foster her wildest ambitions — to become an astronaut. That’s where the University of Kentucky came in.

As the first person in her family to pursue a bachelor’s degree and study engineering, Savannah describes the feeling as daunting yet rewarding. “Knowing that I’m helping this profession become more diverse, by increasing representation, makes me extremely proud.”

“When I first got to college, it was very hard,” Savannah said. She struggled finding her place and in some of her courses, but the resources at UK and the friends she made drove her to succeed and gave her that sense of community during her first year.

“BECAUSE THERE ARE FEW BLACK ENGINEERS IN SOCIETY, IT’S MORE DIFFICULT FOR BLACK CHILDREN TO SEE THAT

AS A POSSIBILITY FOR THEMSELVES. THERE ARE KIDS THAT HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT,

BECAUSE THEY DON’T HAVE THE RESOURCES AVAILABLE

TO BE EXPOSED TO OPPORTUNITIES. I WANT THE YOUNGER GENERATION TO KNOW THEY ARE MORE THAN CAPABLE OF OBTAINING A DEGREE AND HAVING THE CAREER OF THEIR DREAMS.”

– Savannah Lewis, ‘21, Thomson, Ga., Engineering

DR. JENNIFER MCMULLEN HAS BEEN MY FAVORITE PROFESSOR AT UK. I HAD HER FOR KHP 445, A FULLY ONLINE CLASS, AND I NEVER GOT TO MEET HER IN PERSON, BUT SHE FOUND A WAY TO BE ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS I’VE EVER HAD. SHE CHECKED UP ON HER STUDENTS REGULARLY - IT WAS EVIDENT THAT SHE REALLY CARED ABOUT US AND OUR SUCCESS. ON MOST OF MY ASSIGNMENTS, THERE WOULD BE A QUESTION AT THE END JUST ASKING ME HOW I WAS, WHAT I WAS EXCITED ABOUT OR WHAT I WAS WORRIED ABOUT. THE SIMPLE QUESTIONS MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE FOR ME - IT SHOWED ME THAT SHE GENUINELY CARED ABOUT ME.

FAC U LT Y W H O J O I N YO U O N YO U R J O U R N E Y For Chris Crawford, professor of physics and astronomy in the College of Arts & Sciences, it was hard to put his emotions into words after he learned his students nominated him for the 2021 UK Great Teacher Award. “All my effort and energy at UK is directed towards the student research and teaching, and so to see recognition from the people that I’m working hardest for, and care the most about, it adds great fulfillment to my job,” Professor Crawford said.

“It reminds me how amazing it is that our predecessors could have figured all this out. And so it’s fun to see this physics being rediscovered every year.”

an extra dimension to my courses in terms of real-life examples and relevant assignments,” he said. “At the same time, teaching is when I get my best new ideas for research. I also value my students taking part in my research.”

HEAR FROM PROFESSOR CRAWFORD ON HOW HIS STUDENTS INSPIRE HIM!

Crawford says the raw energy and optimistic outlook his students bring to the classroom inspires him in his own research.

Crawford is a leading researcher of fundamental symmetries in nuclear physics, which is something he integrates into his teaching.

“Often I have no idea how to attack a problem, but I just have to remember to do it like my students do, and we’ll be just fine.”

“There’s a great synergism between research and teaching. I feel like the research I do adds

Part of the joy in teaching for Crawford is watching his students understand elements of physics for the first time.

M A K E E V E RY DAY T H E ... B E S T. DAY. E V E R! At UK, we don’t just say we put students first in everything we do – we put our words into action. In the last 10 years alone, we’ve spent $2.8 billion transforming campus to have everything you’ll need to do all the things you never thought possible. When you walk in your residence hall and first meet your roommate or meet up with your study group at the Gatton Student Center, you’re walking into spaces that have been carefully crafted with your success in mind.

Where the UK community hangs out, lives and studies on campus are some of the newest facilities in the country and are full of all the amenities - comfy furniture, tons of spaces to charge all your devices, and great snack and dining options. Some of the newest and most modern residence halls in the Southeastern Conference – yeah, we have those, too.

CONSIDERING THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS ENROLLED AT UK, I WAS CERTAIN THAT I WOULD ONLY BECOME CLOSE WITH A SELECT GROUP OF FRIENDS. I KNOW THAT ON A WALK TO AND FROM CLASS AND AROUND CAMPUS THERE ARE ALWAYS FRIENDLY FACES SURROUNDING ME, AND THAT IS THANKS TO THE ABUNDANCE AND VARIETY OF ORGANIZATIONS THAT HAVE ALLOWED ME TO FORM THESE FRIENDSHIPS.

YO U R N E W KENTUCK Y HOME Tanner Thompson grew up in Monticello, Ky., the son of a high school football coach, so he frequently trekked to Lexington with his dad for UK home football games. He thought he knew what campus was like, but it was his campus tour that was the pivotal moment for him. “Touring UK, I felt so at home on campus,” Tanner said. “The residence halls were amazing, the buildings were beautiful and everyone on campus I interacted with was so friendly. There’s a close-knit community feel that truly defines UK. I knew it was the place for me.” That sense of belonging that Tanner felt on his tour has continued throughout his UK experience. “When I toured campus, I thought it was a huge place, but after arriving on campus, it really feels like home. I am rarely in a place where there are not familiar faces, I have great relationships with my professors and it is extremely easy to get involved,” Tanner said.

UK’s Living Learning Program provides a strong, residential academic experience connected to students’ majors or interests. An LLP will help you form connections through specialized programs and intentional interactions with UK faculty and staff, all focused on your success. go.uky.edu/llp

W H E R E C H A M PI O N S ARE BORN Athletics are an exciting aspect of college life, and as a member of Big Blue Nation, you’ll be part of a powerhouse program in one of the country’s top conferences – the Southeastern Conference. UK’s 23 varsity sports have become synonymous with championships. Whether it’s the historic men’s basketball program or the 2021 women’s volleyball and rifle national championship teams, the goal every year is simple: compete for and win conference and national championships. And as a student you can take in all the action with tickets that range in price from free to $11. That’s a golden opportunity you’ll want to take advantage of! And speaking of golden, did you know that 22 athletes with UK connections competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics bringing home a school-record 12 medals? Fencing, track and field, rifle and men’s basketball all featured medal-winning Wildcats. It’s always exciting cheering on the Wildcats – blue body paint is optional, but screaming and cheering are not.

B B N VO LV E D Getting involved in a student organization is not just fun and games (though they are a lot of fun); it’s about making you happier and more successful. Research shows that students who are involved with a student organization are more connected to their university and perform better in the classroom. And with more than 550 student organizations, there’s an activity for you at UK. Join an intramural team, even if you’re not an athlete. Give back through organizations like DanceBlue, a 24-hour no sitting, no sleeping dance marathon to raise money for UK’s Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic. Or take part in academic, social, religious, cultural, arts, media, political, activism, Greek life or other special interest groups to name a few. Get involved - and earn some money - by getting an on-campus job. UK’s student employment team will help you find a job that works with your course schedule.

DANCEBLUE IS A SUPER POWERFUL EXPERIENCE. YOU GET TO SEE THE KIDS YOU’VE BEEN RAISING MONEY FOR ALL YEAR AND IT IS A TRULY EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE OF THE POWER AND INFLUENCE OF OUR COLLECTIVE STUDENT BODY. DANCEBLUE CHANGES THE LIVES OF SO MANY KENTUCKY CHILDREN AND IT’S WHERE I’VE MADE SOME OF MY CLOSEST FRIENDS.

It’s pretty easy to see why Lexington is a great college town. Nestled in the heart of Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region, Lexington is a vibrant, friendly community of a little more than 330,000 and has the amenities of a bustling city, wrapped in small-town charm and surrounded by rolling hills and beautiful horse farms. Our hometown has a close connection with the University and a culture that students describe as close-knit, eclectic, opportunity-rich, and supportive of all things local. Lexington is also within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the country’s population, making it an ideal college location that’s not too far away from home. www.visitlex.com

DRE AMS MADE POSSIBLE “Opportunities don’t chase people, opportunities wait for the chasers.” That’s just a little something Montre’ale Jones tells himself as he takes on new leadership activities, academic opportunities and life’s challenges. Growing up in Hopkinsville, Ky., Montre’ale — like many children — found construction fascinating, enjoying the process of building something from his imagination. But a question from his mom would help him reframe his future plans. “One day I announced to my mom ‘hey, I want to be a construction worker.’ And she was like, ‘well, why don’t you be the architect?’ I didn’t know at first what that was. But as I learned what the architect was, their role and their significance in society — that they are pivotal in how we interact in space and with each other on a daily basis — I knew that’s something I wanted to be a part of.” After high school graduation and two years at a community college, Montre’ale transferred to the University of Kentucky College of Design to complete his degree in architecture. “I wanted to make my transition seamless and that’s what it was. When I got to UK — after being involved at my community college — I was ready for that bigger step, that bigger platform and place.” As he pursued his bachelor’s degree in architecture, Montre’ale stayed true to his mantra and continued

16 University of Kentucky

to chase opportunities. He got involved with MANRRS (Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences), and not only was active in the award-winning UK chapter but also served as a national officer. Additionally he was part of Homecoming Court, involved in the Student Government Association and several other student organizations. Montre’ale conducted faculty-mentored research as part of a Gaines Fellowship at UK and was afforded several chances to travel around the U.S. and abroad, like Italy and China, giving him even more opportunities to grow. He then decided to complete a master’s degree in urban and environmental design before leaving UK to join the workforce. “I chose to remain at UK for graduate school because I really think there’s something special here. I value the education and the people here within my college itself. They are very knowledgeable people with a vast network. My education here at the university’s College of Design has been nothing but phenomenal.” As Montre’ale begins to pursue his career in architecture, one thing is for certain, his drive and resilience is a lasting legacy his Wildcat family will not forget.

“I DON’T LIKE TO

LEAVE SPACES THE WAY I FOUND THEM. AND I REALLY THINK I MADE AN IMPACT HERE AT UK IN DIFFERENT SPACES. I’M PROUD TO SAY THAT I’VE CHANGED THE CAMPUS. AND I THINK THE CAMPUS HAS CHANGED ME.”
