WEDNESDAY 13 OCTOBER Kent Law Society Lecture in memory of Keith Tucker

Edward Garnier QC MP The Role of Law Officers in Government Edward Garnier is HM Solicitor General and the MP for Harborough. He is also a consultant to insurance law firm, Greenwoods, who act for some of Britain’s largest insurance companies. He was called to the Bar in 1976 and practises as a defamation and media law specialist from chambers at One Brick Court in the Temple, London. He became a Queen’s Counsel in 1995, a Crown Court Recorder in 1998 and a Bencher of the Middle Temple in 2001. Following the 1997 election, Edward Garnier was appointed Shadow Minister, Lord Chancellor’s Department, until 1999 when he became Shadow Attorney General. He was appointed Shadow Home Affairs Minister in 2005, Shadow Minister for Justice in 2007, Shadow Attorney General in 2009 and in May this year he was appointed HM Solicitor General.

Mr Jonathan Kestenbaum Transforming the UK’s capacity for innovation Jonathan Kestenbaum is Chief Executive of NESTA, the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts. NESTA is the largest independent endowment in the UK exclusively dedicated to fostering innovation. Over the past five years NESTA has backed some of the UK’s fastest growing high technology companies. Jonathan previously worked as Chief of Staff to the Chairman of Apax Partners, Sir Ronald Cohen. Together they built The Portland Trust, which developed a $500 million fund for small businesses in the Middle East. Jonathan graduated from the LSE and Cambridge, followed by an MBA with distinction from the Cass Business School. He is a graduate of the Cabinet Office Top Management programme and the Strategic Agility programme at Harvard Business School. He is also a Companion of the Chartered Institute of Management.

Professor Vernon Bogdanor The coalition and the constitution Vernon Bogdanor CBE is Professor of Government at Oxford University and a Visiting Professor of Constitutional History at King’s College, London. One of Britain’s foremost constitutional experts, he has written extensively on political and constitutional issues and is also a frequent contributor to television, radio and the press. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, Honorary Fellow of the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies, and a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences. He has been an adviser to a number of governments, including those of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Kosovo, Israel and Slovakia. He is an Honorary Fellow of The Queen’s College, Oxford, and an Honorary Bencher of the Middle Temple. In July 2010, he was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Kent.

WEDNESDAY 8 DECEMBER Rutherford Annual Lecture in conjunction with The English Speaking Union

Professor Sir Christopher Frayling Horace Walpole’s Cat Christopher Frayling was until recently Rector of the Royal College of Art, Chairman of Arts Council England and Chairman of the Design Council. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Cultural History at the RCA and a Fellow of Churchill College Cambridge. A writer, critic and award-winning broadcaster on network radio and television, he has published eighteen books on the history of culture ‘high’ and ‘low’, the most recent being: ‘Henry Cole and the Chamber of Horrors’ and ‘Horace Walpole’s Cat’.
