Course info
Some of the decisions that are made in governments and other institutions can have a huge effect on our lives, particularly now that we live in a truly globalised society. This course aims to give you an understanding of how those decisions are made, and encourages you to take an in-depth look at issues such as conflict resolution, democratisation and development, as well as systems of governance.
Course length: 3yrs full-time
Throughout the course you’ll gain a critical understanding of political processes and institutions, focusing specifically on British politics. You could look at political parties, political leadership, policy-making and elections, as well as political philosophy and global political issues. We know there is no substitute for gaining hands-on experience, so we give you the opportunity to apply the theory through a 90-hour work placement in your second year, giving you practical experience in a professional setting. You’ll also benefit from guest lecturers such as MPs and political figures, and engage in student-led debates. In your second year you’ll also have the opportunity to study abroad for a term. Previous students have studied in America, France, Italy and Spain.
Example modules • Introduction to Politics • British Party Politics
• The Government and Politics of Europe • Human Rights in Contemporary Society
“For my work placement I’ve created a radio show on campus talking about all things politics. We have a weekly broadcast where we cover everything from elections, to philosophy and global politics. Whilst it isn’t the conventional work placement, it has been invaluable in broadening my political insight and interaction with the multi-faceted aspects of politics today. The modules are engaging and keep you thinking dynamically, which has also given me the confidence to pursue my ambitions in the field of politics.” Humayra Sacha is currently studying Politics BSc(Hons) 8
