At the University of Huddersfield we work closely with our partner organisations to ensure that our courses meet NHS and healthcare priorities. The courses we deliver are therefore updated on a regular basis to ensure that they are contemporary in nature. We are currently developing courses in the following areas.

Degree apprenticeships combine work with part-time study. As apprenticeship standards are developed we will work with employers to develop appropriate programmes. We have recently validated apprenticeship courses in Health Professional Education and Health Research, as well as a degree apprenticeship for the Advanced Clinical Practice (ACP) MSc. Our courses Our health courses increase the depth and breadth of your knowledge and practice, which will enable you to function at the leading edge of practice development and research. These specialist courses address the changing health trends affecting countries worldwide.

You will have the chance to broaden your understanding and knowledge of global healthcare issues by studying alongside health professionals, social workers and others working within health services in specialist areas, as well as students from elsewhere in the world.

Our courses are designed to assist professionals to further develop their career and skills in specialist areas of clinical practice. Previous students have gone on to secure jobs as team leaders, case managers, specialist Macmillan nurses and community nurses. Some have returned to the University to develop their role further as community managers, practice learning facilitators, practice teachers and university lecturers.

Research in context Photovoice study It is recognised that people with a serious mental illness (SMI) have more physical health problems and a shorter life span than the general population. The aim of this study, carried out in collaboration with the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, was to understand what healthy living means to people living with a SMI and the barriers and facilitators to a healthier lifestyle. Using the photovoice methodology and focus groups, we found

that being mentally well was the most important thing.

Healthy was described as “feeling complete”, “being busy” and “finishing my goals”. A key finding was the value of participation in the project and how taking photos of their day to day lives enabled participants to discuss their experiences and engage in activities that enhanced their wellbeing.

Advanced Clinical Practice MSc Duration 3 years part-time

Entry requirements • You must hold current registration on Part 1 of the Nursing and Midwifery Council Register (NMC), Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or the General Pharmaceutical Council. A period of 3 years post-registration experience is required.

Designed for experienced nurses and allied health professionals Advanced clinical practice is delivered by experienced registered healthcare practitioners. The role of the Advanced Clinical Practitioner is characterised by a high degree of autonomy and decision making.

• This course provides theoretical and clinically focused education and training to support the expansion of practice and the development of new skills; specifically clinical history taking, clinical examination skills and consultation skills.

• The theoretical and clinically focused modules enable you to meet the four pillars of professional practice; clinical practice, leadership and management, education and research.

• It provides an opportunity for you to enhance your current knowledge and practice, which may lead to career progression into advanced roles across all specialities of practice.

• This course is accredited by the Royal College of Nursing.

My course involved attending one day a week at university and one day a week in primary care. Initially, I observed then went on to work alongside a GP/ANP mentor, putting theory into practice and seeing how conditions present in real-life situations. This was an essential experience and has been a huge part of my learning. The staff at the University are very approachable, highly knowledgeable and at the forefront of leading the development of the Advanced Clinical Practitioner.

Master of Podiatric Surgery Designed for podiatrists

Duration 3 years part-time

Entry requirements • An MSc in Theory of Podiatric Surgery or an equivalent qualification.

• Be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Podiatrist with annotation, with POMS-S and POMS-A. • You must meet the current requirements with respect to DBS Checks and Occupational Health Checks/Medical Checks.

• Have an approved surgical training place available for your use.

• Have completed an Objective Assessment of Professional Skills.

This new and exciting Master of Podiatric Surgery course is the first in England that leads to eligibility to apply to be annotated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a podiatrist practising podiatric surgery. It offers those who have already studied the Theory of Podiatric Surgery MSc an opportunity to enhance their skills and knowledge allowing them to practise in this specialist area.

• The course incorporates the College of Podiatry fellowship training programme.

• It is supported by tutors from the College of Podiatry faculty of podiatric surgery.

• It contains a large placement element consisting of 600 hours per year, providing you with an opportunity to experience real-world scenarios prior to qualifying.

• You will be taught by academics who are all practising clinicians within podiatric practice.

• Through utilising up-to date research evidence, policy documents and a wide range of clinical experience, you will be assisted to further update and develop your clinical practice.

Designed for podiatrists This course provides registered podiatrists with an opportunity to focus on podiatric specialisms including musculoskeletal or management of long-term conditions, as well as enhance your core skills of assessment, diagnosis and management.

• You will undertake a clinical practice module. This will allow you to develop your clinical practice in the University’s podiatry clinic, as well as out in practice on a 17 week placement.

• Y ou will advance your specialist skills through option modules including injection therapy, independent prescribing, diagnostic imaging, forensic podiatry, wound care and tissue viability.

• Huddersfield is the only university offering a full-time Master’s course in podiatry with a placement in musculoskeletal (MSK) or long-term conditions.

This course has not only helped to increase my professional confidence but also my clinical skill set. Consequently, aiding me in my future career as it has broadened my scope of practice and allowed me to branch off into more areas of the profession. Overall, the Podiatry MSc course has allowed me to develop my knowledge, critical evaluation skills and question my practice. I plan to bring these new skills into my practice and continue to work towards being a well-rounded podiatrist.

Theory of Podiatric Surgery MSc Designed for podiatrists

Duration 1 year full-time and 2 years part-time

Podiatric surgeons undertake invasive surgery on the foot and ankle, as well as manage a wide range of conditions surgically. This course offers podiatrists the opportunity to expand and develop their knowledge and skills in this specialist area. It will assist you to gain the competencies required to become a podiatric surgeon.

• Huddersfield is the only university offering this course on a full-time basis with a placement in podiatric surgery. You will undertake a clinical practice module, enabling you to develop your clinical practice in the University’s podiatry clinic, as well as out in practice on a 17-week placement with a podiatric surgery team.

• This course is supported by the Northern Deanery of the College of Podiatry Faculty of Podiatric Surgery.

• Involvement from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists ensures that our course meets the current needs of the profession and its existing training programmes.

This course has benefited my practice and provided the knowledge behind some of the courses I have already attended, for example Advanced Life Support. This course was well presented and delivered. The supporting materials were readily available on Brightspace and the addition of the reference builder was a huge bonus as it took the stress out of referencing the work.

Designed for nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and paramedics This course is aimed at registered healthcare professionals working in an acute secondary care setting. It is designed to enhance your knowledge and critical understanding of managing and caring for patients within an acute or critical care setting.

• The course was designed and validated in conjunction with local employers and aims to develop you academically, as well as clinically.

Critical Care PgCert Designed for nurses, allied health and social care professionals

Duration 1 year part-time

Entry requirements • You must be a health or social care practitioner, registered with a professional body such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) with at least 12 months post-registration employment within a critical care setting.

This course is designed to enhance the skills of health and social care professionals currently working within an acute or critical care setting. It provides an opportunity for you to enhance your knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiological effects of critical illness, as well as examine the current evidence and developments in this field of care.

• Have an honours degree (2:2 or above) or can demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills at honours degree standard.

• Structured around the Critical Care National Network (CC3N) Step 2 and Step 3 competencies, your studies will focus on advancing your knowledge and applying skills in critical care practice.

• If your first language is not English, you will need to meet the minimum requirements of an English Language qualification.

• This course was designed and validated in conjunction with local employers and aims to develop you academically as well as clinically.

Supported enthusiastically by our local critical care educational leads, this competency based programme provides a clear structure guided by the Critical Care National Nurses Network (2015) requirements. It introduces you to the multifaceted nature of caring for a critically ill patient and provides you with the opportunity to develop your theoretical understanding and demonstrate competency under the supervision of an experienced critical care practitioner/mentor.

Emergency Care PgCert Duration 1 year part-time

Entry requirements • You must be a health or social care practitioner, registered with a professional body such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) with at least 12 months’ post-registration employment within an emergency care setting.

This course will facilitate the rightful recognition of the specialist knowledge and skills required to work in emergency care settings. It includes the diversity of clinical topics required to care for the range of patients presenting, from both an age and clinical condition perspective. In time, this will be the foundation course for any career progression in emergency care.

Designed for nurses, paramedics, allied health and social care professionals This course is designed for health and social care professionals working in an emergency care setting.

It provides academic accreditation to the specialist knowledge and skills required to work in the field of emergency care. The course aims to encourage clinical and professional development, leadership skills and career progression in emergency care.

• The course content is informed by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) National Curriculum and Framework for Emergency Nursing. It provides a foundation for caring for people throughout the life span and with conditions specific to all body systems.

• Elements unique to emergency care will be covered including major incident management, emergency care of children and younger people, minor injury management, as well as emergency mental health care. In addition, the course will include initial assessment and treatment of acutely ill adults.

• Specific cross-cutting themes such as medicines management and safeguarding concerns will be integrated throughout the course.

End of Life PgCert Designed for nurses, paramedics, allied health and social care professionals

Duration 1 year part-time

Entry requirements • You must be a health or social care practitioner, registered with a professional body such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) with at least 12 months post-registration employment.

• Have an honours degree (2:2 or above) or can demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills at honours degree standard.

Palliative and end of life care is increasingly at the centre of all health and social care policy.

Kirkwood Hospice in collaboration with the University of Huddersfield is committed to ensuring that palliative and end of life care education is available for all health and social care professionals, facilitating the transfer of policy into practice for the benefit of the patients who are cared for.

This course is aimed at professionals who are either working in the field or have a particular interest in palliative and end of life care, as well as those working with individuals living with life limiting illnesses. It provides you with the opportunity to consolidate and enhance your knowledge and understanding of effective palliative/end of life care.

• This course was developed in partnership with Kirkwood Hospice and was aligned with the End of Life Core Skills Education and Training Framework (NHS England).

• Learning will be focused towards enhancing your knowledge, skills and the essential attributes required to drive high quality care for the individual with palliative care needs, whilst encompassing the care and support of families and loved ones in a variety of health and social care settings.

• Throughout the course emphasis will be placed on the holistic assessment of the individual and the development of management plans from which optimum end of life care can be delivered. Legal and ethical requirements will also be examined within the context of end of life care and their implications for practice.

Long-term conditions such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, depression and arthritis do not have a cure. This means the health and social care practitioner’s key role of is to provide support to individuals inorder to maximise their health, well-being and quality of life. Self-management support is at the heart of person-centred care but surprisingly few practitioners have had an opportunity to attend any formal education on this topic.

Some of our courses are supported by funding from Health Education Yorkshire and the Humber (HEYH), however these places are limited. For information please contact the Admissions Team. If you are not eligible for a HEYH funding, you may be able to apply for a government student loan. These loans are only available for full Master’s courses (180 credits) and top-up honours degrees. If you would like more information on how this may apply to you, please contact the Student Finance Office. Alternatively, further information can be found at: hud.ac.uk/students/finance
