Current government reforms in education focus on early childhood development and the importance of high quality early years provision in providing the foundations that prepare young children and babies for the best start in life. So if you’re aspiring to be an early years specialist, and passionate about working with young children and their families, then this course could be for you.

You’ll have the opportunity to explore a variety of issues in relation to children and early childhood, including health and wellbeing, education, learning and development and to look at wider topics such as safeguarding, society and environment.

The course could enable you to consider a wide range of roles in education, specifically teaching in nursery and reception classes and leading practice in pre-schools, nurseries, children’s centres and child minding networks within the private, local authority and voluntary sectors. This course is also a recognised progression route into Primary teacher training and Early Years Teacher Status courses.

Religion and Education BA(Hons)

Religion plays a key role in today’s multicultural society, influencing many aspects of everyday life and culture.

The focus of this course is to help you gain an in-depth understanding of six major world religions – Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhi – and to explore the relationships between religion, education and other aspects of contemporary society.

Through exploring religion and contemporary society you’ll have the opportunity to study related topics such as sociology, ethics and philosophy, as well as vocationally orientated topics such as safeguarding and leadership.

You’ll have the option to undertake a placement opportunity, designed to enhance your practical knowledge and help you to develop the skills required by employers. You could gain experience in schools, children’s centres, charities, children’s services in a local council, or in museum education.

This course is ideal if you’re already in a learning support role within a school, college or other educational setting and would like to enhance your knowledge and skills in this specialist area.

We’ll support you to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to effectively support the process of teaching and learning in a variety of contexts. You’ll also have the opportunity to build upon the unique features of the support role in ways that contribute to raising learner achievement, promoting a commitment to safeguarding, equality of opportunity, anti-discriminatory and inclusive practice.

Flexible teaching to accommodate your work To undertake this course you’ll need to be already working in a learning support role – this could be in a voluntary capacity. To ensure flexibility and access for those working within school and other childcare settings during the week, teaching on this course typically takes place on Saturdays. Your work will help you to contextualise the academic content of the course and therefore provides an important aspect of the programme.
