Our chemistry courses cover core areas of organic, inorganic, analytical and physical chemistry as well as specialist option modules. Our chemical engineering degrees aim to provide an in-depth coverage of modern, industry-relevant chemical

engineering material from the basics to the process design. Our pharmaceutical chemistry courses cover key areas of chemistry, pharmaceutics and drug design.

You’ll also have the opportunity to go on a placement in the third year of your course, which can provide you with the chance to put theory into practice and gain real-world experience. If you study for an undergraduate Master’s degree these placements are compulsory. If you study for a BSc(Hons) degree they are optional but recommended, as they can be valued by employers and help to enhance your employability after you graduate.

In the chemical and manufacturing industries, chemists devise new synthetic routes on a small scale for pharmaceuticals, fuels, clothing materials and polymers. Chemical engineers transform these reaction conditions so that the products can be manufactured on a large, industrial scale.

Chemical engineering deals with the factors involved in the scale-up of chemical reactions and the design of reactors for industrial manufacturing processes.

This course has been designed to bridge the interface between chemistry and chemical engineering, and offers a grounding in the key concepts of chemical engineering. It offers you the opportunity to gain the knowledge to effectively speak the language of both subject areas. In the third year of your

Science Extended Degree leading to a BSc(Hons) degree

Key information: UCAS code: BCF0 Duration: Full-time (Year 0 of a 4/5 years degree including placement year) Entry requirements: CCE at A Level MMP at BTEC. This does not need to be in a technical or Science subject.

80 UCAS points from a combination of Level 3 qualifications.

Applicants with no formal educational qualifications will be required to complete an aptitude test and demonstrate ability to benefit from the course either by evidence of previous study or satisfactory completion of the test.

All applicants are invited to an interview.

If you do not have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry to a science based degree at the University of Huddersfield, you can apply to the Science Extended Degree.

This is designed to provide you with the opportunity to gain a thorough grounding in the four main disciplines in science- biology, chemistry, maths and physics. It will help you to develop the transferable theoretical knowledge, practical skills and scientific understanding essential for successful completion of other science based degrees here at the University of Huddersfield.

On successful completion of this year (you must pass all six modules), you’ll be able to continue onto the first year of your degree in the following science subject areas:

* Progression onto Chemical Engineering BEng(Hons) is also dependent on achieving a minimum pass mark of 60% in the Foundation Maths module. Progression onto Chemical Engineering MEng is also dependent on achieving a minimum pass mark of 60% in the Foundation Maths module, plus an overall pass mark of at least 70%. ** Progression onto Pharmacy is dependent on meeting stringent performance levels in the Science Extended Degree. You must pass all six modules with an overall pass mark of at least 70%. Plus at least 70% in the Chemistry in Action module and 70% on the maths element of the Foundation Maths module. You must also successfully undertake an interview with the Pharmacy admissions staff.

“I’ve always been interested in how things work, which is why I’m a scientist. I became interested in my field of study at school as chemistry was my favourite subject at GCSE and A Level. Also chemistry is relevant to many aspects of everyday life.
