Welcome to Pharmacy Welcome to Pharmacy here at the University of Huddersfield. We’re a modern and dedicated teaching and research environment within the School of Applied Sciences.

We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching and our tutors care about what you achieve. In fact, we are the UK’s only University where all our permanent teaching staff are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy.* Teaching and research within Pharmacy at the University of Huddersfield is delivered by a team of academic staff including a large number of Pharmacists, with excellent local, national and international links. We conduct innovative research that makes a real impact on people’s lives, applying pharmaceutical

science into clinical practice in fields such as formulation, drug delivery, neuropharmacology, cancer pharmacology, pharmacogenetics and personalised medicines. There are lots of great reasons to study Pharmacy with us at Huddersfield. We’ve a clear focus on best practice and your learning is supported by simulated experiences in our modern, bespoke facilities.

We offer placements in all four years of the Pharmacy MPharm course including in community and hospital-based pharmacies, and experience with other healthcare professions. These placements offer you the opportunity to develop relationships with employers and gain relevant real-world experience, which can help to enhance your employability. You could also take part in extra-curricular activities and might have the opportunity,

for example, to join our transatlantic exchange programme with Wilkes College of Pharmacy in Pennsylvania.** The Pharmacy MPharm degree, as with all other Pharmacy degrees in the UK, is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), to allow students to enter pre-registration training, the next step on the journey to becoming a Pharmacist. At Huddersfield we support you in applying for pre-registration positions and also provide advice on alternative options.

The Professional Pharmaceutical Studies BSc(Hons) is suitable if you are interested in how medicines work, and want to know more about the actions, formulations and uses of medicines, but are not wishing to undertake five years of study in order to register and practise as a Pharmacist. Graduates may consider careers in the pharmaceutical industry, commercial and healthcare sectors or the NHS.

Our friendly staff have expertise across all areas of pharmacy. They will support you with the opportunity to gain a strong foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences, and the knowledge and professional skills for a variety of careers in pharmacy. * Permanent staff, after probation: some recently appointed colleagues will only obtain recognition in the months after their arrival in Huddersfield, once they have started teaching. ** T here are four places available each year on the exchange programme with Wilkes College of Pharmacy in Pennsylvania and selection is by interview of those who express an interest. Pharmacy MPharm Pharmacy is a serious profession where academic ability is important, along with skills, values and professional attitudes. The Pharmacy MPharm course has been designed to provide you with the opportunity to gain a strong foundation in the pharmaceutical sciences, and the knowledge, professional skills and outlook to support you in a career in any area of pharmacy. With a focus on medicines and patients from the start, the course is structured to support your learning experience, as your studies are integrated between science practice and practical and professional skills.

Our teaching staff have expertise across all areas of pharmacy and other areas of science. You’ll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in our modern laboratories and custom-designed pharmacy suite.

The Pharmacy MPharm degree is the only qualification in the

UK that can be used to register and practise as a Pharmacist and this course, as with all other Pharmacy degrees in the UK, is accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). On completion of your MPharm degree, you’ll be required to undertake a pre-registration year prior to registering as a Pharmacist.

Placements are organised to offer a wide range of opportunities in different healthcare settings, including hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry, independently-owned and multi-national pharmacies, GP practices and outpatient clinics. These help to provide you with valuable practical experience and the opportunity to learn alongside other healthcare professionals.

Pharmacy offers a variety of interesting careers.

Pharmacists can work in a range of positions across its various sectors including community, primary care, hospitals and industry.

The course is constructed around a series of annual themes providing an integrated approach to the study of a range of pharmaceutical topics. You are supported in developing real world problem solving skills by assignments and group work.

Science Extended Degree leading to a BSc(Hons) degree

Key information: UCAS code: BCF0 Duration: Full-time (Year 0 of a 4/5 years degree including placement year) Entry requirements: CCE at A Level MMP at BTEC. This does not need to be in a technical or Science subject.

80 UCAS points from a combination of Level 3 qualifications.

Applicants with no formal educational qualifications will be required to complete an aptitude test and demonstrate ability to benefit from the course either by evidence of previous study or satisfactory completion of the test.

All applicants are invited to an interview.

If you do not have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry to a science based degree at the University of Huddersfield, you can apply to the Science Extended Degree.

This is designed to provide you with the opportunity to gain a thorough grounding in the four main disciplines in science- biology, chemistry, maths and physics. It will help you to develop the transferable theoretical knowledge, practical skills and scientific understanding essential for successful completion of other science based degrees here at the University of Huddersfield.

“I’m from Huddersfield and was keen to stay here due to my athletic background as a race walker for team GB. Since I was about 14 I’ve wanted to do something linked with the use of medicine, and how this helps people, and chemistry.

I found out about pharmacy as a potential career when I was about 16 from a placement I went on at my local community pharmacy. It really interested me and I immediately started researching universities that offered pharmacy courses.

“I attended several interviews and open days at other universities, but when I saw the facilities here and met the staff, I immediately chose Huddersfield. I get the support

I feel prepared for the workplace and I’m coached on how to be professional right from the start of the course.

I need as an individual as well as being positively encouraged to be an independent learner.

I like that in the lectures, the skills and training offered are not just the theory, but cover the wider practical and professional skills required to help me be successful in my career.

“My most memorable event so far has been my dispensing exams, where my professional practical skills were assessed in timed tests.

Also the role playing I’ve done as preparation has really helped my communications skills when dealing with different patient and prescription scenarios.

“After my degree I’d like to complete my pre-registration training in a hospital. I’d like to progress through a hospital pharmacy career and gain a diploma in clinical pharmacy. I’m interested in specialising in oncology and anti-cancer agents.”

I really enjoy teaching pharmaceutics

Dr Kofi Asare-Addo Lecturer in Pharmaceutics

“I’ve always enjoyed chemistry and been interested in how drugs work, so at university I studied pharmaceutical science. I’m originally from Ghana and went to college and university here in the UK. I joined the University of Huddersfield in 2012, upon completing my PhD as a Research Assistant, and since 2014 I’ve been a Lecturer in Pharmaceutics.

“Whilst studying for my undergraduate degree I really enjoyed the pharmaceutics aspect of it. I also spent time in a secondary school and summer schools where I helped to teach science and maths. I realised that I enjoyed teaching and helping students to learn, so I decided to a make a career out of it.

One of the reasons I studied and completed my PhD in Pharmacy was to help me in my career as a Lecturer in Higher Education.

What I enjoy the most about teaching my subject is when my students are really engaged with their learning.

I try to incorporate my research into my teaching as much as possible, including taking small experiments into the classroom. This helps my students to see the practical applications of what I teach them.
