Our fashion and textiles studios provide you with an impressive and inspiring backdrop to your studies and they’re kitted out with the latest specialist equipment, supported by expert technical staff.

There’s no substitute for real life, hands-on experience. That’s why we’ve developed solid relationships with the fashion and textiles industry to help to give you the opportunity to work with inspirational organisations which lead the creative economy both in the UK and overseas. As testament to this, we have one of the highest proportions of students undertaking an optional placement year in the UK.** All our

Fashion and Textiles students have the opportunity to spend a year in industry, and in 2015/16, 76%*** of students who completed their second year opted to go on to a placement year. They took up placements with companies including Alexander McQueen, London; Karl Lagerfeld, Amsterdam; ASOS, London; Boohoo, Manchester; and Marks and Spencer, London. Our placements provide a taste of what it’s really like in the fashion and textiles industry, open up your career opportunities and also enhance your final year studies.

Our industry links also provide opportunities for you to work on sponsored projects and competitions.

We aim to help you gain the skills and experience required by the international jobs market in both creative and technical roles such as designing, buying, product development, fabric and garment technology, manufacturing, styling, trend forecasting, marketing, promotion and journalism to name a few.

This course aims to offer a fresh and original approach to costume design through combining textiles and construction. You’ll have the opportunity to learn how to analyse text, music and character and develop individual concepts for costume designs. You’ll also be encouraged to take risks, question and challenge your work, and develop an individual identity.

Underpinned by craftsmanship, this route of the Textile Practice course aims to help you to develop your making skills through creative development and thinking. You’ll have the opportunity to explore a mix of both traditional and future materials, and apply your creativity in a number of ways including cloth, craft design, artefacts, education and textile art.

You’ll have the opportunity to develop your professional awareness through working on projects that involve socially engaged practices, the wider community and craft practitioners. These aim to give you insight into the aesthetic and professional opportunities that are available to you as a contemporary practitioner within the field of textile crafts and art.

Sustainability and design ethics are woven into the course through both theory and practical work, and you’ll be supported in learning to recognise how you can use your creativity to explore solutions to real-world problems.

Our fashion and textiles department offers a range of facilities to help you to bring your ideas to life. This includes computerised ARM looms, Sheima Seiki knitting machines, computer aided design (CAD) embroidery, industry standard sewing machines, pattern cutting equipment, laser-cutting, digital ink-jet fabric printing, screen printing and printmaking.

My student journey so far

Rachel Purcell Fashion and Textile Buying Management BA(Hons)

“I loved dressing up when I was a child,” says Rachel Purcell from Warrington.

“I loved making clothes, cutting them up and sewing them back together. When I was 15, I wanted to have my own wedding dress shop, so my dreams have always been related to fashion.”

As she grew older, Rachel’s ambitions turned towards the business side of the industry.

“When I was in year nine at school, I discovered that fashion buying was an option.

Then I went to college, where I studied business and textiles,”

I secured myself a placement at Hunter Boots in London where I was able to apply what I had learned on the course in real life.

she explains. This shift in focus led Rachel to study Fashion and Textile Buying Management BA(Hons) at the University of Huddersfield.

“We did a module called Fashion Buying Merchandising and Retail, in which we identified a gap in the market and developed a fashion range, going through every stage of the process. At the moment we’re studying international expansion and finance, so the course puts you in a really good position to get a job in the future. My dream job is to be a womenswear buyer at Liberty. I like premium, luxury fashion.”

Nicola Perren Senior Lecturer and Admissions Tutor, Textile Practice

“This is a subject that you have to be passionate about. You have to put your all into it,” explains Nicola Perren, Senior Lecturer.

“My students are inspiring. I get excited by the weird and wonderful things they come up with. I’m particularly inspired by students who overcome challenges and hardships.

It’s not always about what they achieve academically, but I feel very proud of the journey they’ve been on.”

With parents in the armed forces, Nicola had an interesting childhood. “Until I came to Huddersfield, I’d moved every two years,” she recalls. “And when I was younger I wanted to be a spy

I was interested in the arts and I was quite sporty, so in my mind it was a way of combining the two.”

Nicola’s interest in the arts led her to study textile design at the University, before returning as a Lecturer, and she’s had some memorable moments. “When Sir Patrick Stewart became Chancellor of the University, I taught him how to use a loom! He came for a couple of hours and did some weaving. His mum used to work in the mills, so he felt quite at home.”
