BEng(Hons) / MEng Your course We want to help you make the most of all the exciting opportunities the automotive industry has to offer.

From designing components for high-performance cars, through to working as a trackside team engineer or even designing the next generation of environmentally friendly vehicles.

We’ll give you the chance to develop fundamental skills in automotive engineering, and apply them to real-world scenarios. You could get involved with our racing team, Team HARE, and get hands-on with the design, development and build of a single-seat Formula Student car. With the opportunity to compete at international events held in places like Spain and Germany.

From your second year onwards you’ll be able to work in a fully equipped automotive laboratory. Expert technicians and tutors will be on hand to guide you through your practical work.

Energy Engineering BEng(Hons) / MEng Your course There is a growing need to improve how we all use energy in our daily lives, renewable and sustainable energy sources are becoming more and more important. This course helps you understand the issues and develop your skills to find employment in the energy sector.

We aim to give you a good grounding in both electrical and mechanical principles.

We also look at the commercial side of the industry to help develop your business acumen.

You could develop skills in a range of power generation technologies, including nuclear, wind, tidal and solar, as well as the more traditional fossil fuels.

BEng(Hons) / MEng Your course From high-performance race cars through to lifesaving medical equipment, railways to green technology, none of this would be possible without mechanical engineers.

The course is designed to give you a thorough grounding in the principles and fundamentals of mechanical engineering. You’ll get involved in practical work, projects and problem-solving, we’ll cover a range of topics within the subject, including mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and materials.

We’ll give you the opportunity to design, make and analyse products and processes from a range of different engineering applications. We’ll also look at the business and financial side of your subject, so you can see it in context and get the full picture of how the industry operates.

The course is fully accredited by the IMechE, which means it meets the academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and goes towards part of the academic requirements you need to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

Mechanical Engineering (Top-Up) ­BEng(Hons)

Course length: 1yr full time Entry requirements: A minimum of a Higher National Certificate (HNC) at merit in Mechanical Engineering for year 1 entry, or a Higher National Diploma (HND) at merit in Mechanical Engineering for year 2 entry.

If you have studied Mechanical Engineering for at least two years at university or higher education level, this course helps you to build on your knowledge and skills to gain a degree.

Mechanical engineers play a vital role in our everyday lives. They design, manufacture and operate a wide range of products and processes. From high-performance cars to lifesaving medical equipment, from railways to green technologies, so much of our world is dependent on the skills of mechanical engineers.

This one-year top-up course aims to give you the knowledge and skills you need to take the next step in your mechanical engineering career. We’ll give you the chance to understand how mechanical engineering contributes in the design and operation of power stations, in making best use of our remaining fossil fuels, in the bio-medical industry, in rail transportation and in the manufacturing sector.

Engineering Foundation Year leading to a ­BEng(Hons) Course length: Year 0 of a 4 or 5yr degree Entry requirements: CC/MPP in a relevant subject/64 in relevant subjects. Plus GCSE Maths at grade 4/C or above

Engineering Foundation Year Leading to a BEng(Hons) Your course Perhaps you’re fascinated by engineering, but have never formally studied the subject.

Or you may have decided on a career change. It could also be ideal if you do not have the usual academic qualifications to study at degree level.

The Foundation Year isn’t a stand-alone course, but makes up the first year of your studies leading to a BEng or MEng degree in our Electronic or Mechanical Engineering courses. To go on to a degree, you must gain an average mark of 50%, and have passed each component of your Foundation Year.

We’ll explore mathematics and engineering science, and we’ll also introduce you to electronic, electrical and mechanical engineering. By looking at each discipline in turn, we could help you decide which degree is right for you.

During your studies you’ll have the chance to develop a range of transferable skills, including research, report writing and presentations. All these skills could prove useful in any career.

Example modules • Foundation Mathematics • Foundations of Engineering • Communication and Research • Engineering Investigative Studies

Your future Successful completion of the Foundation Year, which means you must pass all four modules and attain an average mark of 50% or over. You can then progress onto one of the undergraduate courses in either of our Electronic Engineering or Mechanical and Automotive Engineering subject areas, and progress onto year one of your chosen degree.

The legal bit This brochure was prepared in the Spring of 2019 for courses starting in September 2020 and is up to date as at the date of publication. Any subsequent changes to information will be published in the course information listings on our website www.courses.hud.ac.uk and you should check our website for the latest information before you apply.

Changes to a course you have applied for If we propose to make a major change to a course that you are holding an offer for, then we will tell you as soon as possible so that you can decide whether to withdraw your application prior to enrolment.

Where your course allows you to choose modules from a range of options, we will review these each year and change them to reflect the expertise of our staff, current trends in research and as a result of student feedback or demand for certain modules. We will always ensure that you have a range of options to choose from and we will let you know in good time the options available for you to choose for the following year.

Major changes would usually be made with effect from the next academic year, but this may not always be the case. We will notify you as soon as possible should we need to make a major change and will carry out suitable consultation with affected students. If you reasonably believe that the proposed change will cause you detriment or hardship we will, if appropriate, work with you to try to reduce the adverse effect on you or find an appropriate solution. Where an appropriate solution cannot be found and you contact us in writing before the change takes effect you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the University without liability to the University for future tuition fees. We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Major changes

Termination of course

We will only make major changes to the core curriculum of a course or to our services if it is necessary for us to do so and provided such changes are reasonable. A major change in this context is a change that materially changes the services available to you; or the outcomes, or a significant part, of your course, such as the nature of the award or a substantial change to module content, teaching days (part time provision), classes, type of delivery or assessment of the core curriculum.

In exceptional circumstances, we may, for reasons outside of our control, be forced to discontinue or suspend your course. Where this is the case, a formal exit strategy will be followed and we will notify you as soon as possible about what your options are, which may include transferring to a suitable replacement course for which you are qualified, being provided with individual teaching to complete the award for which you were registered, or claiming an interim award and exiting the University.

If you do not wish to take up any of the options that are made available to you, then you can cancel your registration and withdraw from the course without liability to the University for future tuition fees and you will be entitled to a refund of all course fees paid to date.

We will provide reasonable support to assist you with transferring to another university if you wish to do so.

Changes to your course after you enrol as a student We will always try to deliver your course and other services as described. However, sometimes we may have to make changes as set out below: Changes to option modules

For example, it may be necessary to make a major change to reflect changes in the law or the requirements of the University’s regulators; to meet the latest requirements of a commissioning or accrediting body; to improve the quality of educational provision; in response to student, examiners’ or other course evaluators’ feedback; and/or to reflect academic or professional changes within subject areas. Major changes may also be necessary because of circumstances outside our reasonable control, such as a key member of staff leaving the University or being unable to teach, where they have a particular specialism that can’t be adequately covered by other members of staff; or due to damage or interruption to buildings, facilities or equipment.

If you want to start your course in September 2020, you can apply to UCAS any time from 1 September 2019 onwards. Please make sure UCAS receives your application by 15 January 2020.

If you’re at a college or school right now, it’s probably already registered with UCAS. The best thing to do is ask your teacher or careers adviser to help with your application.
