Are you fascinated by people? What makes them tick, why they make the decisions they do, what they need to live, and what they can’t do without? Then a course in Marketing could be for you. It’s about putting people’s desires under the microscope and then developing some pretty savvy ways to get their attention and influence their choices. Marketeers have always fought to gain their customers’ attention. Nowadays that fight is happening on a global scale, as brands and organisations try to capture customers across the world. It’s a challenging yet thrilling time to get the marketing strategy right, and you could help change opinions, influence consumers and win customers. At Huddersfield, we’ll give you the chance to make an impact in the marketing profession, whether you’d like to work on the client side or in a marketing agency. You’ll explore things like how to develop strategy, understanding and choosing the right media channels and executing a brief

for a client. Many of your tutors have business experience, having worked for companies like Nike, Marks and Spencer and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). We’ll encourage you to explore the latest marketing thinking, and then road test it to see if it works. You could develop a concept for a whole new brand, and then present it to an audience. If you like to stand up and get noticed, we’ll also give you the opportunity to enter national competitions like L’Oréal Brandstorm and the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) ‘The Pitch’. Imagine being an award-winner before you’ve even started on your career. We’ve also joined forces with CIM to give you the chance to gain additional professional qualifications that marketing employers are looking for. You’ll be able to take part in their networking and regional events too. In addition marketing courses are accredited by the CIM Graduate Gateway programme.

Advertising and Marketing Communications BA(Hons)

Without marketing, a business won’t have any customers. And without customers, a business can’t succeed. Marketing is essential to any industry, and we’ll give you the chance to learn how to plan and develop effective advertising and marketing campaigns. The world of advertising and communications is constantly changing. The rise of digital and social media means businesses now have a huge amount of promotional channels available to them. This means there are new challenges for brands trying to get their message across. Organisations are hungry for talented professionals who know how to help them stand apart. The course gives you a solid marketing foundation along with specialist studies in advertising and interactive communications. You’ll also have the chance to study the development and expansion of media channels, and the challenges communications managers face today. All the way through your studies, we’ll be considering real examples and brands.

While you’re here, we’ll give you the chance to become involved in two competitions. Every year our marketing students can get involved in L’Oreal’s ‘Brandstorm’ and the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) ‘The Pitch’ competition. Huddersfield students have won both competitions. Take part while you’re here and it could look great on your CV. Thanks to our network of contacts in the business world, we’ll also give you opportunities to work on live projects, not to mention an optional placement year that may see you working in a marketing company or an agency. Employers are looking for graduates who have real-world experience, and we’ll give you the chance to build up your CV. At Huddersfield, we were the first to introduce marketing as an undergraduate degree. Our Advertising and Marketing Communications course is innovative too. We keep things up-to-the-minute, so you could have the opportunity to get a great head start in a marketing career.

“I feel my degree at Huddersfield was excellent in preparing me for the type of work I do now, which is something I put down to the practical hands-on nature of the course and the vast industry experience of the tutors who provide it. Rather than simply discuss theory, nearly every project we were given had a practical aspect which could be applied to real-world industry scenarios.”

My student journey so far

Polly Edmondson Marketing with Public Relations BA(Hons) “I spent a lot of my childhood in Warrington, then moved to Barnsley, and then eventually Huddersfield at about age 11. I decided to stay in Huddersfield to study because I really like the town, and I knew that for the course I wanted to do, the university had a very good name and reputation. “Before university, I took a year out to complete my apprenticeship in Marketing & PR, whilst also getting a year’s work experience in this field. I knew it was what I wanted to do, and Huddersfield offered the unique combination of both Marketing and PR within one course. Therefore, it was always my top choice!”

You’ll make memories that will stay with you forever. “The most memorable moment at University I would have to say is meeting all the brilliant people on my course. There is so much diversity within my course, and everyone is so lovely and welcoming, I have definitely made some friends for life! “Once I finish university, I would really love to go travelling, before heading to London to pursue a career in the PR field. “Being at University makes you realise how quickly the time goes! I would say to anyone coming to university, make the most of your time here, work hard, but also join clubs and socialize too, it’s good to take a break from working hard every now and again. You’ll make memories that will stay with you forever.

Meet our staff Marketing is at the heart of every business

Dr Brendan Canavan Senior Lecturer, Marketing “When I was younger I didn’t really have an idea of what I wanted to do, but being from the Isle of Man I was interested in sustainable tourism, I realised that marketing is at the heart of every business and that is where I wanted to be. “I came to work at the University because my grandad used to work for the University as a careers advisor and he encouraged me to visit and apply. I did, made some friends and got the job. My most memorable event has been marking my first assignment and seeing for the first time how students had picked up and developed the knowledge they learnt in class.

I love how marketing is the key to spotting trends to help us understand customers and markets better. This makes it a very forward looking, positive and varied subject to teach and engage with. “I love how marketing is the key to spotting trends to help us understand customers and markets better.
