Case Study Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy The Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA) was founded in Baku in 2006 to provide a training institute to meet the needs of its expanding diplomatic service. It has subsequently grown into a school of international affairs, now with both graduate and undergraduate degree programs. In the next five years the ADA will see rapid and dramatic expansion in terms of breadth of provision and a relocation to a new, purpose built campus in Baku. Building the capability of its academic staff to provide innovative learning & teaching is central to its institutional mission statement. Following initial discussions with Professor Vivienne Baumfield (International Dean), University of Glasgow, senior staff from ADA visited the University of Glasgow to discuss their developmental needs with the team in the Learning and Teaching Centre. During this visit, as well as attending the University’s Annual Learning & Teaching Conference, opportunities were organised for the visitors to meet with a range of innovative teachers within the College of Social Sciences as well as the College Dean for Learning & Teaching, Dr Moira Fischbacher-Smith. Following this contact, they engaged Dr Vicky Gunn, Director, Learning and Teaching Centre to collaborate in two key areas: • The development of a preliminary learning and teaching plan, with the ultimate aim of establishing a Learning, Teaching and Research Centre, implementing a PG Certificate in Learning & Teaching in Higher Education, and generating an institutional-wide learning & teaching strategy. • The design and implementation of a new academic staff induction process which included a two-day, intensive workshop on teaching in higher education, delivered in the first year by a member of the LTC team on site in Baku, Azerbaijan. In subsequent years, the input from the LTC will reduce as ADA builds its capability to deliver the induction. This two-day workshop covered the following areas: - An introduction to course design - Student learning: How do small groups foster it? - Assessment & Feedback - Evaluating our practice The principle established in the first year of this collaboration was one which focused on the ADA achieving self-sufficiency to deliver its own PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education within two years. The focus of the partnership is to enable the transformation of the PG Certificate in Learning and Teaching programme design from Glasgow University into one which is relevant to the ADA context. This is being done at the same time as developing a discrete induction programme, unique to academic staff at the ADA. Additionally, mentoring is being provided from within the Learning & Teaching Centre, to facilitate the development of a strategic approach to learning and teaching capacity building.

Case Study Study Visit for Vice Chancellors from Pakistan In January 2012 University of Glasgow hosted a study visit by 18 Vice Chancellors from Pakistan. The aim of the visit was to gain an understanding of the principal policy agendas in UK Higher Education, especially in a Scottish setting, of the governance and management of UK universities. The visit also aimed to identify key issues in the management and development of Pakistani universities, which could benefit from consideration against parallel experiences and initiatives in Scottish/UK universities. Senior staff from the University of Glasgow provided sessions and workshops on key themes including: • • • • •
Organizational structures and strategic planning. Financial strategy and resources. Human Resource strategy. Knowledge exchange and the commercialization of research. International partnerships and collaborations.
Participants in the study visit had the opportunity to meet with staff from across the university who are directly involved in the implementation of these key strands of activity. In these interactive workshops participants were able to discuss challenges of implementation and how might be overcome in their context.
