Maroon & White Gala

1

I find it truly inspiring to see the Cub community uniting for a common purpose. Tonight’s Gala is a magnificent example of the power of community and the profound impact your collective support can have on Jesuit education. The Maroon & White Gala plays a pivotal role in making our mission possible. Through your unwavering support and generosity, we are able to provide $3.5 million in financial aid for our students. It is heartwarming to note that this year, thanks to your gifts, almost half of our students are receiving the gift of Jesuit education through tuition assistance. Your gift is not merely a financial contribution, it is a profound investment in the transformation of young men’s lives. May your generosity continue to shine brightly, and may we all be inspired by the flames of purpose and service that burn within us. Thank you for your unwavering support, and may this evening be a testament to the enduring spirit of Jesuit education. In the spirit of Magis, let us continue to strive for the greater good and set the world ablaze with compassion and knowledge.

A Week in Immersive Italy for Two

ITEM #5

Donated by: The Alumni Mothers Club & Julie and Jim Welch '97 - Amaze Travel

ROME, UMBRIA & TUSCANY TRIP HIGHLIGHTS: • Two nights in Rome staying close to the many iconic landmarks

• First-class train tickets to connect you to Assisi, Siena & Florence

• Two nights in the hilltop town of Assisi

• Private driver transfers to/from the Italy airports

• Two nights in the preserved medieval center of Siena

• Concierge service from Amaze Travel (owned by U of D Alum Jim Welch ’97,

• One night in UNESCO World Heritage Historic Center of Florence • Three intimate private tours including: Food Walking Tour of Rome, Siena Walking

Tour, Florence Artisans Oltrarno Tour

and voted #1 Travel Agency by Hour Detroit!): options to upgrade or add-on to your trip; recommendations for your leisure time including areas to explore & restaurant recommendations

DAY 1: ARRIVE IN ROME! Upon arrival at the Rome airport, you will be met by your driver after exiting customs & baggage claim for your private transfer to your hotel. You will check into your Rome hotel for your 2-night stay. With a central location near to the many historical sites in central Rome, you are surrounded by so many key places just outside your front door including the Trevi Fountain, Palazzo Navona, Spanish Steps, Pantheon and more. We also recommend visiting the Church of the Gesu, the mother church of the Jesuits and where St. Ignatius spent many important years establishing the Jesuits. DAY 2: SAVORING ROME FOOD TOUR Accompanied by a food writer, chef or culinary educator you will explore some of the city's delicious specialties, with an emphasis on its revered street food culture. Rome shines brightly as one of Europe's top food destinations, with a gastronomic culture that can be traced back to ancient Roman times, and you will look at how this history, and more recent outside influences, make for a unique, stimulating, and diverse eating experience. You will walk through the historic city center of Trastevere (meaning ’beyond the Tiber’ in Latin) on the hunt for the best coffee, chocolate, focaccia, cheese, and gelato during the tour. DAY 3: TO THE HEART OF UMBRIA Take the train from Rome northeast into the Umbria region to the hill town of Assisi. Assisi is the birthplace to the revered St. Francis, a person and saint so inspirational that our current Pope took the name when he was elevated to the papacy in 2013. DAY 4: IMMERSE INTO ASSISI It doesn’t take long for the traveler to be captivated by the hill town of Assisi. Spend today exploring and enjoying the town at your leisure. The placement overlooking a picturesque valley is but one of the many wonderful features. The architecture and stone unique to Assisi is consistent across its narrow walkaways and lanes, transporting you to an earlier time. At the northern end of town is the magnificent Basilica of St. Francis which is truly not to be missed. The upper level of the Basilica contains famous paintings by Giotto of the life of St. Francis, while the Saint’s tomb sits down below in a peaceful, stone surrounded chapel. DAY 5: STUNNING SIENA Today you will take the train from Assisi in the heart of Umbria, to the beating heart of Tuscany – the medieval town of Siena. Once a town that held importance across Europe and a rival to neighboring Florence, Siena is a beautiful Tuscan hill town too often missed by tourists. The main square, Il Campo, is among the finest in Europe with the shell-shape that fans out from Palazzo Pubblico. St Catherine of Siena was an extremely influential person during her time on the Catholic Church and European politics, and she is one of just 37 saints given the title of Doctor of the Church. DAY 6: SEEING SIENA Explore Siena with a walking tour, led by a local writer or art historian, explores the history, architecture, and distinct character of this idyllic city. Siena stands as one of the most gracious and alluring cities in Italy. It is a charming, architecturally harmonious, and placid city, filled with glorious Medieval churches, Renaissance palazzos and modern-day preservation efforts. In fact, the entire city center has been put under UNESCO protection, to safeguard its unique charm and historic character. DAY 7: FINISHING WITH FLORENCE ARTISANS This morning take the train from Siena to Florence for your final night in Tuscany. While Florence has so much to offer to see and explore, this afternoon a special and unique tour is arranged for you. The Florentine tradition of producing artisanal goods has been in existence for centuries and remains one of the cornerstones of Florence's visual and social history. This tour explores the area known as Oltrarno (“on the other side of the Arno”), which has produced goods for countless generations of kings, queens, gentlemen, and noblewomen. Florentine leatherworkers, silversmiths, shoemakers, and milliners continue to practice their crafts building upon methods passed down through generations. You will visit the private workshops of these distinguished individuals, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the current state of artisan production. DAY 8: DEPARTURE Sadly, your Italy trip comes to an end today. Pack up all your souvenirs, enjoy a final breakfast before meeting your driver in the lobby of the hotel for your private transfer to the Florence airport.
