Faculty Cluster Initiative UCF recently launched the Faculty Cluster Initiative to leverage our existing strengths and foster the development of strong, interdisciplinary teams focused on solving today’s toughest scientific and societal challenges through teaching and research. The Faculty Cluster Initiative is adding more than 30 new faculty members in six select fields to advance UCF’s unique areas of excellence and global impact. The strength of this initiative comes from faculty depth, the ability to translate this depth across disciplines and the collaboration of faculty and academic administrators in every college throughout the university.

Cyber Security and Privacy Developing world-class scholarship on the security and privacy for the Internet of Things, and creating tools and methods to prevent and mitigate security and privacy breaches, this cluster cultivates highly skilled graduates for this growing field. Research involves human users, physical facilities, hardware, software, communication protocols and potential attackers, and will provide integrated solutions to both the human and technological causes of tomorrow’s greatest security and privacy challenges. ucf.edu/research/cyber

Energy Conversion and Propulsion Transforming UCF into a global leader in energyrelated research, specifically in the discovery and application of materials for catalysis, this cluster is creating cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research that generates the knowledge base essential for accelerating the discovery and application of novel catalysts for energy conversion, storage and propulsion. ucf.edu/research/energy

O REACTION

We’re seeking the best new minds to solve the world’s most challenging problems. Six faculty clusters have been selected in the program’s inaugural year, including cyber security, renewable energy, coastal systems, genomics and bioinformatics, prosthetics, and energy conversion and propulsion. ucf.edu/research/clusters

Genomics and Bioinformatics

Renewable Energy Systems

Inspiring cross-cutting research that leverages UCF’s strengths in medicine, evolution and ecology, and computer sciences, by providing technical expertise and collaborative opportunities, this cluster focuses on biodiversity, health-related research, and integrating genomics and bioinformatics into curricula at all levels.

Advancing UCF’s work in smart energy systems and sustainable energy storage, this cluster commits itself to research in resilient, intelligent and sustainable energy systems. Through partnerships among university, utility and government stakeholders, it aims to facilitate integration of renewable energy resources, as well as provide innovative solutions that make electricity grids self-organizing, efficient and resilient.

ucf.edu/research/genomics

Prosthetic Interfaces Deploying engineering and circuitry inside the human body can now help erase disabilities and potentially enhance human capacities beyond their evolutionary limits. Intelligent prosthetics is beginning to take center stage in this arena of medicine and engineering. Biomechanics and biomaterials, cellular and tissue engineering, bio-nano-technology, control systems, human computer interaction and intelligent user interfaces/controls provide the essential support to make this cluster successful. ucf.edu/research/prosthetics

ucf.edu/research/rises

Sustainable Coastal Systems Leading world-class efforts to understand ecosystem health and function, and assessing natural and humanrelated impacts to coastal ecosystems, this broad-based research and development cluster integrates science and social needs to address coastal issues, and trains students in conservation and resource management. It transforms thinking beyond disciplinary limits and investigates new challenges for the coming century, addressing future environmental and economic issues and growth opportunities. ucf.edu/research/coastal

Silver Lining Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences WILLIAM SELF and MOSES MURDOCK, ’13, share a common interest — silver. Their work at the Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences on the therapeutic uses of silver ion is garnering attention.

Merging Art Forms As a professor of music in the School of Visual Arts and Design, STELLA SUNG helps students bridge the gap between traditional art forms and cutting-edge technology. Sung is also an internationally renowned composer, creating new works for opera, orchestra and ballet, and leads UCF’s Center for Research in Education in Arts, Technology and Entertainment.

Better Together When Associate Professor of Physics COSTAS EFTHIMIOU proposed a research project involving string theory to student CHRISTOPHER FRYE, ’13, an ideal collaboration was conceived. Under Efthimiou’s mentorship, Frye became a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar, a highly competitive award for scientists, engineers and mathematicians.

CHAMPIONS P L AY H E R E

Knights are champions on and off the field. We’ve earned landmark victories on state and national stages — from conference titles to FBS bowl wins. Every touchdown, 3-point shot, home run, goal and award our student-athletes achieve scores points for the reputation of UCF Athletics. Beyond the scoreboards, some of our biggest triumphs have been in the classroom. UCF student-athletes have earned an average GPA of 3.0 or better for 16 consecutive semesters. And our Graduation Success Rate consistently ranks among the best in the nation.

Orlando

A Great Place to Work and Live Orlando has seen rapid growth and economic expansion in recent years and is a center for the life sciences, medical innovation and technological developments. That’s why Orlando ranked No. 4 on Forbes’ 2015 best cities for future job growth and No. 13 for fastest-growing cities in the U.S., and why Fast Company magazine has included Orlando in its list of “Best Cities for Innovation.” Plus the sunshine and warm climate create a perfect environment to live, work and explore.

Educated Workforce Each year, UCF graduates 15,000 students. Many stay and enter the workforce armed with an education that translates into greater economic earning power. UCF has more than 250,000 alumni and many stay in Central Florida to work in business, sales or hospitality, or in research areas like nanotechnology, engineering, biomedical sciences or pharmaceuticals. Others go out of state, adding to the growing national reputation of UCF and Orlando. UCF also works side-by-side with the community on joint projects — from teaching underprivileged children to read to protecting the environment, and from developing health care solutions to finding alternative energy solutions.

Major Employer

Many of the 10,000 employees in the adjacent Central Florida Research Park work with UCF researchers and students on projects in the sciences, engineering, photonics and optics, modeling and simulation, and healthrelated fields.
