While recovering from an ATV accident, James Isabell gave up his job as a laborer and began helping out at a preschool. There, he discovered a passion for early learning, and decided to enroll at UAF. Now, he’s taking classes through UAF’s Northwest and Fairbanks campuses, attending remotely from his home village of Teller, and pursuing his degree in elementary education, all while staying connected to his Inupiat culture and the outdoor life he loves.

The health of the oceans is in flux, and Feyne Elmore is driven to understand how, why and what it means for life on Earth. Supported by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity, she has studied how changes in the salinity of Prudhoe Bay affect tiny but crucial zooplankton. Her work as an undergraduate in the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences helped her earn one of the most prestigious scholarships in science and is setting her research career on a steady course.

Here, you can join the 40 Below Club (membership earned by disrobing at the temperature sign), and cheering on UAF’s 10 Nanook teams is practically a sport unto itself.
