Making the most of your day Thank you for choosing to attend The University of Manchester’s undergraduate open day. By visiting our campus you will be able to gain a real insight into the student experience and life here.

You will have the opportunity to find out more about the courses you are interested in, meet current staff and students, as well as attend sessions on key issues such as accommodation and student finance. We hope you enjoy your visit and take full advantage of the programme we have put together for you.

There is no need to register on the day itself, just head to the first session you want to attend.

Stage 1 Decide which subject sessions you want to attend – you can attend more than one, so just look at the timetable on pages 2-13 to see which ones suit you best. If you are interested in Medicine or Geography, you will need to have pre-booked your place via the online registration form.

You can also find out more about your subject by visiting the relevant Subject Exhibition Stand. These are also listed in the tinted boxes on pages 2-13. The stands will be open from 10am – 3.30pm and will provide you with the opportunity to speak with staff and current students on the course.

Stage 2 We have general information sessions running throughout the day covering topics such as Careers, Student Finance and Accommodation. Have a look at the full list on page 1415 and fit the ones you want to attend around your subject sessions.

Planning your day In order to get the most from your day we recommend that you take time to plan your visit. There is a lot to see and do so we have included a visit planner at the back of this programme to make sure that you don’t miss any of the sessions that you want to attend.

We do advise that where possible you arrive early to your sessions as some will be very popular; in these cases we may limit admittance to one student and one visitor or students only.

As you make your way through the programme and start to plan your day, you will see that next to the building names/session venues there is a number in brackets. This indicates the building number as listed on the campus map on pages 32-33 and will help you to navigate around our campus. If you are having any problems on the day in finding a building please ask a member of our open day team dressed in purple and they will be happy to direct you.

Please note: A British Sign Language interpreter is available in the Whitworth Building (51). Speak to member of staff based in the building for more information. We are constantly improving our campus so there might be areas undergoing refurbishment during our open days.

Stage 3 Finally, we have a variety of Student Experience activities organised such as Campus Tours and Students’ Union Tours. We also have a Student Experience Exhibition, which will have information stands on areas from Sport and Student Finance to Accommodation and Study Abroad. For a full list see pages 22-25 and plan these activities around your other sessions.

University of Manchester Students’ Union The Union boasts over 480 societies and groups, from Archaeology and Amnesty to Politics and Panto. It helps to make decisions at the University, ensuring the interests of all students are represented and preserved.

Whether you are a budding presenter or producer eager to hone your skills at the Union’s very own state of the art media studio, or a music fan wondering who is headlining the official welcome week party, come along and find out what the largest university students’ union in the UK has to offer you. Campus Tour Take a walking guided tour of the main buildings and facilities of the University led by a student ambassador.

University History and Heritage Information Point Throughout its history, The University of Manchester has been pushing the frontiers of knowledge. Major discoveries and advances, such as the splitting of the atom and the world's first programmable computer happened on our campus. One of the University’s Heritage guides will be able to talk to you about some of our oldest and architecturally significant buildings, discoveries that shaped our modern world and answer any questions you may have.

We anticipate that these tours will be very popular and guests may be required to queue outside at peak times throughout the day.

Student Experience Exhibition The Student Experience Exhibition is where you can pick up information about the University’s main student services.

This will include student finance, the Disability Advisory and Support Service, the Accommodation Office, Living at Home in Manchester, IT Services, Sport, the Library and Go Abroad. There are also stands providing information for parents and for The University of Manchester Aspiring Students’ Society (UMASS). In addition, information will be available on how students can get involved in activities such as volunteering and environmental sustainability in our Making a Difference area.

We’ve completed the biggest investment in buildings and facilities ever seen at a British university to create the best learning environment for our students. We are investing a further £1 billion in our campus. In the next few years there will be a new engineering campus, new centres for law and business, a major refurbishment of the library, a bigger improved student’s union building and a new medical school.

Travelling from Piccadilly Train Station?

For visitors travelling via Piccadilly Train Station, Student Ambassadors will be able to provide you with walking directions to the Oxford Road Campus which takes about 20 minutes. There will also be Student Ambassadors along the route to help direct you.

Alternatively, the University has arranged to operate a bus service (number 147) between Piccadilly Station and Oxford Road Campus. The service is free of charge and will operate at the times below. Please follow signs for the taxi rank and Fairfield Street and you will be directed to the bus stop.

Due to local traffic and the popularity of the service, please allow 45 minutes for the journey.

A taxi ride from the station will take approximately 15 minutes and cost around £8.00.

Victoria Station is approximately 15 minutes’ walk from Piccadilly Gardens. Here there are frequent bus services to the Oxford Road Campus. Services include the 41, 42, 43, 142 and 143. Alternatively a tram service to Piccadilly Gardens runs from Victoria Station. You can then catch one of the bus services mentioned above. Taxis are also available outside the station.

The University has its own hotel in Fallowfield, Chancellors (www.chancellorshotel.co.uk) offering three star accommodation set in five acres of landscaped gardens and is only a short distance away from the University's Oxford Road Campus. Luggage Large items of luggage can be stored securely within the Whitworth Building (51), in the Whitworth Corridor Committee Room D. Please note, luggage must be collected by 4pm and unfortunately cannot be stored overnight.

There are plenty of outlets around campus that are open all day, so you can have lunch whenever suits you.

Visitors with disabilities or special requirements The campus is generally accessible for all those with mobility difficulties, although there are a few areas where problems may occur. The main exhibition in the Whitworth Hall (50) is accessible by a lift in the Christie Building (58).

If you are looking for some culture you could visit one of the many galleries or museums in the city centre, or visit the University’s own Manchester Museum (44) or The Whitworth (84) which are free to enter.

These are our tips on making the most out of your day: • Our open days are very popular events and sessions can sometimes become full.

To avoid disappointment we suggest where possible you arrive early.

• Check the programme to see when sessions occur for your subject of interest.

You can attend sessions for more than one subject if you want to.

• Decide on your subject sessions first, and work the general sessions around these.

• Some sessions may be limited to one student and one guest when busy.

• Campus tours run all day – work these around your subject sessions.

• Most sessions finish ten minutes before the scheduled finish time to allow you time to get to the next session.

• Wear sensible shoes and bring a raincoat or umbrella.

Bring a bag for any literature you might pick up.
