Prepared for the worst ... with the best. Greetings, from my home office, where I never imagined just months ago would become my primary professional headquarters. We are all in such a profoundly changed world since last I wrote, that it’s difficult to find the words to summarize what’s happened – and what’s happening – at University Liggett School. And while this letter is not the place to pore over all of the intense collaboration and execution necessary for our school to rise up to the unprecedented challenges of the pandemic, it is the place for me to highlight one of the most essential factors to our success. Our outstanding, innovative and deeply committed teachers.

In my last letter, I introduced you to the final fundraising effort of our $50 million Sure Foundations campaign. In that piece, I celebrated our Faculty of Excellence and encouraged you to learn more about them and consider supporting their excellence with a commitment of your own. And while we could never have known that only months later, they would be called upon to reimagine their classrooms and curriculum in an entirely digital format, I realize now we were prepared for the worst all along…because we are so fortunate to have the best faculty anywhere as our own.
When news of the pandemic made clear that this was a crisis we would have to respond to in a decisive fashion, our faculty surrendered their spring breaks to ensure that when students returned to their virtual learning environment on March 30th, they would feel noticed, supported and energized. The feedback we have received from not only current families, but others in our extended local community, is that our University Liggett School faculty has created something incredibly special in this era of separation – meaningful, deeply engaging togetherness. In the Lower School, classroom and resource teachers schedule group and individual check-ins throughout the day and employ tools, such as See-Saw and Google Classroom, to give feedback on student work that is completed at each student’s own pace. In the Middle and Upper School, students virtually “follow” their normal daily schedule. At the appointed time a class or advisory would normally meet, they join a Zoom session hosted by that particular teacher. The Remote Learning Program, and the moments of unexpected magic within, have brought tears of awe and gratitude to more than one of us on the executive team, as well as to the students and parents who were just as vital to making our plans work. Scavenger hunts, hand-delivered science kits for kitchen gem digs, blinded Lego building competitions, gym class challenges, sidewalk chalk chemistry continued on page 2
