Screening | Timely | Advanced | New | Dissemination “Stand for Pink” is a breast cancer awareness initiative from University Hospital Sharjah to honour survivors, remember those lost to the disease and to support the progress we are making to defeat breast cancer through our Sharjah Breast Care Centre (SBCC).

Following the UAE National Health Agenda 2021 to reduce cancer deaths to about 64.2 per 100,000 of the population, UHS has come up with an initiative, “Stand for Pink” for its campaign against breast cancer. The “Stand for Pink” tagline was derived from the pillars of breast cancer management – Screening and detection, Timely prevention and intervention, Advanced diagnostic procedures including the use of digital mammography and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, New and up-to-date approach to treatment and Dissemination and public awareness regarding breast cancer prevention.

Since 5 years, UHS has partnered with Pink Caravan – a Pan UAE breast cancer initiative that falls under Friends of Cancer Patients’ for early detection of breast cancer. In 2016, UHS launched the first of its kind in Sharjah and Northern Emirates - a one-stop comprehensive centre dedicated to the fight against breast cancer and other breast diseases.

TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE The pink ribbon was originally used by Susan G. Komen for the Cure® since its inception in 1982. The first Komen Race for the Cure® logo design was an abstract female runner outlined with a pink ribbon and was used during the mid-1980s through early 1990s.

The first breast cancer survivor program was launched in 1990 at the Komen National Race for the Cure® in Washington, D.C. The survivors at that time wore buttons initially in black and white. But later that year, the survivor program developed and that pink was used as the designated color for Komen to promote awareness and its programs.

In the following year, pink ribbons were distributed to all breast cancer survivors and participants of the Komen New York City Race for the Cure®. Then in 1992, Alexandra Penney, editor-in-chief of Self magazine, wanted to put the magazine’s second annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month issue over the top. She did this by creating a ribbon and enlisting the cosmetics giants to distribute them in New York City stores. This has been the birth of the PINK RIBBON. At present, any pink ribbon can be used to represent breast cancer awareness. This has been the practice all over the world to spread awareness about breast cancer.

BREAST CANCER FACTS: Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. - WHO 570,000 women died from breast cancer, approximately 15% of all cancer deaths among women in 2015. – WHO The lifetime risk of getting breast cancer in men is about 1 in 1,000. – American Cancer Society In UAE, Breast cancer deaths rates have declined from 8.7 per 100,000 women in 2009 to 5 per 100,000 women in 2014. Late detection of the disease has gone down from 64% in 2009 to 16% in 2013. - HAAD Breast cancer being the third type of cancer-related deaths for both genders, accounting for 11.1% of all cancer deaths. – HAAD Among all Abu Dhabi residents, breast cancer remained the leading cause of cancer cases in 2013, accounting for 16% of all cancers in both genders and at 31.7% - or 253 cases - of female cancer cases. Among female UAE Nationals in particular, breast cancer was the top type of female cancers diagnosed during 2013 (22%). – HAAD

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS: It is important to get familiar with our bodies. So any deviation of the normal should be reported immediately to your doctor.

Most common symptom is a painless, hard mass that has irregular edges. The mass sometimes

can also be tender, soft, or rounded. They can even be painful. That is why it is important to have any new breast mass or lump or breast change checked by a health care provider experienced in diagnosing breast diseases.

Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no distinct lump is felt) Skin irritation or dimpling Breast or nipple pain Nipple retraction (turning inward) Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin Nipple discharge (other than breast milk)

Some of the mentioned symptoms can be caused by things other than breast cancer, if you observed that you have one or more, you should be report to a health care provider so that he or she can ďŹ nd the cause.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING Screening tests can help find breast cancer in its early stages, even before any symptoms appear.

Mammography is the most important screening test for breast cancer. It has been shown to reduce breast cancer by approximately 20%. A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. It can detect breast cancer up to two years before the tumor can be felt by you or your doctor. In 2015, the American Cancer Society releases a new breast cancer guideline for breast screening. Among the changes are the following: At age 40 - Women should start the screening if only they want to.

At age 45 – Women should start yearly mammogram.

At age 55 – Women should have mammogram every other year but women who want to keep

having mammogram yearly should be able to do so.

Regular mammograms should continue for as long as a woman is in good health.

Instructions for Getting a Mammogram: Try not to have your mammogram the week before

you get your period or during your period. Your breasts may be tender or swollen then.

Don’t wear deodorant, perfume, or powder on the

day of the procedure. These products can show up as white spots on the X-ray.

Some women prefer to wear a top with a skirt or pants, instead of a dress. You will need to undress from your waist up for the mammogram.

Breast Examinations are no longer part of the screening as per the guideline because scientific research does not show they provide a clear benefit. But although it is not part of the screening anymore, the American Cancer Society strongly recommends that every women should be aware with the look and feel of their breasts and seek medical attention immediately if changes or a deviation from normal is detected.

GETTING FAMILIAR Breast self-exam (BSE) is regularly examining your breasts on your own. This can be an important way to ďŹ nd any abnormality at an early stage. Not every cancer can be found this way, but it is a critical step you can and should take for yourself.

The 4 Steps for monthly Breast Self-Examination (BSE) Pre-menopausal: choose a day between the 6th -10th day after the start of your monthly period.

Post-Menopausal: choose any day of the last month to perform the above every month.

Pick one motion you will use every time you conduct your BSE, it makes it easier for you to detect any changes in your breast.

Step One | Lying down 1. Place a pillow under your right shoulder 2. Place your right hand behind your head 3. Use the inner pads of the three middle ďŹ ngers of your left hand (See red circle in the diagram) 4. Feel for any changes in your breast, even above and below your collarbone & your armpit area (Like a lump or a hard node or skin thickening) 5. Repeat the same procedure for the left breast

Step Two | Stand upright in front of a mirror 1. Place your right hand behind your head 2. Use the three middle ďŹ ngers of your left hand while feeling your right breast 3. Inspect all areas of your breast, chest and collaborate just like you did when lying down (See the red outlined box) 4. Repeat the same procedure for the left breast using your right hand

UHS AND ITS FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER

SHARJAH BREAST CARE CENTRE In 2016, University Hospital Sharjah in partnership with Friends of Cancer Patients – Pink Caravan launched a center dedicated to the fight against breast cancer – The Sharjah Breast Care Centre.

The centre aims to improve breast care prevention, favor early screening and improve patient’s outcome after treatment. Sharjah Breast Care Centre is a comprehensive and integrative breast centre exclusively dedicated to the prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

It offers a full array of collaborative services, from initial screenings and diagnosis to innovative treatment and supportive counseling. Patients who have breast complaints will receive services ranging from diagnosis to state-of-the-art treatments related to benign breast conditions or breast cancer. We realize that each person is unique, so our personalized multidisciplinary team approach ensures that you will receive the care that is best for you.

The centre has a diverse team of healthcare professionals led by a breast surgeon and supported by a Medical Oncologist, a Breast Radiologist, Breast Care Specialist Nurses, Physician Assistants and Physical Therapists and others, as needed.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS EVENTS University Hospital Sharjah has partnered with Pink Caravan, a pan-UAE breast cancer awareness initiative by the Friends of Cancer Patients, FoCP, in setting up programs during the month of October.
