CME Symposium at UHS

UHS monthly CME symposium featured Dr. Ahmad Munzer Alwaa and Dr. Kurdali from the Department of ENT, University Hospital Sharjah.

Dr. Alwaa, who is Consultant ENT and Head of the Department spoke about “Facial Plastic Surgey and Reconstruction”.

Dr. Kurdali, Senior Specialist ENT at UHS spole about “Otitis Externa – Study in UHS”.

The event was very well attanded and two CME credit hours were awarded to the attendees.

Mammography is particularly important because it can detect breast cancers too small to be felt by physical examination. Research has shown that routine mammography detects 40% of cancers not found on physical examination, thus reducing the death rate from breast cancer by 30%.

UHS Breast Cancer Awareness Drive at Air Arabia UHS team comprising of Dr. Zelal Abed, General Surgeon, Ms. Anne Marie R. Aquino and Ms. Wyndra Molina teamed together for an awareness drive exclusively for the employees. The drive, which is in support of the International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, aims to encourage women to get themselves checked in order to enable early detection and treatment.

UHS breast cancer treatment centre, which has been developed in collaboration with Gustave Roussy, a leading cancer research institute and health centre dedicated to oncology in Europe offers comprehensive and multidisciplinary breast cancer treatment that includes the rapid diagnosis of a breast lesion, the development of a treatment pathway, breast cancer surgery, including oncoplastic (reconstructive and plastic surgery) and administration of chemotherapy.

UHS Breast Cancer Awareness Drive with Pink Caravan University Hospital Sharjah joined hands with Pink Caravan to spearhead breast cancer awareness initiative offering women complimentary consultations and mammograms to help reduce the incidence of the disease and save lives across the Emirates.

As part of the awareness drive, which is in support of the International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, UHS team visited the office of Sharjah Ladies Club; United Arab Emirates Women’s Association, Sharjah HR & Air Arabia and educated the staff about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

UHS is celebrating International Day of Radiology

Let’s celebrate together!

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF RADIOLOGY November 8, 2015

University Hospital Sharjah is joining the European Society of Radiology (ESR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) in celebrating the fourth International Day of Radiology (IDoR 2015), along with radiological societies the world over.

November 8, the day that Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen discovered the existence of x-rays in 1895, is celebrated every year as International Day of Radiology with the intention to build greater awareness of the value that radiology contributes to safe patient care and to improve understanding of the vital role radiologists play in the healthcare continuum.

Paediatric imaging has been chosen as the main theme of the day, to highlight the important role that radiology plays in the detection, diagnosis and management of a wide variety of diseases affecting children, and the special treatment younger patients need.

University Hospital Sharjah supports World Diabetes Day

The theme for this year’s World Diabetes Day on 14th November 2015 is “Nourishing development: halting the diabetes epidemic through healthy eating”.

In recognition of World Diabetes Day, UHS will promote the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and will aim to improve patient education, so that patients are better able to avoid or delay complications associated with diabetes.

Statistics have revealed the Middle East and North Africa account for 9% of the total worldwide cases of diabetes. As a result, it is now noted as the world’s number one region in diabetes prevalence.

Prematurity Day

UHS is celebrating Prematurity awareness day University Hospital Sharjah, as part of its annual awareness programs is hosting a range of activities to mark World Prematurity Day, an international campaign launched by the World Health Organization to raise awareness about the complications of preterm birth (before 37 completed weeks of gestation), which affects 13-15 million babies every year.

The awareness activities are aimed to raise awareness about the risk factors of premature birth and will highlight efforts to prevent it. The event will be attended by parents of pre-mature babies and some of them of them will share their experience as well.

Coffee Mornings at UHS In the latest coffee Mornings at UHS, Dr Adel Karrani, MBBS (Ireland), Masters of Science in Psychiatry (UK), MRCPsych (UK) Consultant Psychiatrist spoke about “Mixed Anxiety Depression” As highlighted by Dr. Karrani, mixed anxiety-depressive disorder (MADD) is a diagnostic category defining patients who suffer from both anxiety and depressive symptoms of limited and equal intensity accompanied by at least some autonomic features.

University Hospital Sharjah is now a GCAA approved “Aviation Clinic�

UHS is now is a General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) approved centre and will now be conducting GCAA aviation medicals.

Aviation Medicine is concerned with the health and safety of those who fly both crew and passengers. An Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) is a physician designated by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and given the authority to perform flight physical examinations and issue aviation medical certificates if the applicant meets regulatory requirements.
