2022 Medical Miracles Gala Summary Report

June 9, 2022

T H A N K

On May, 6, 2022 University Health Foundation hosted its 17th annual

Medical Miracles Gala, benefitting University Hospital's Level I Pediatric Trauma Center Burn Program. It is the only regional program providing comprehensive burn care for children suffering from traumatic burn injuries. The evening celebrated a journey made possible by a vision, time, and the power of community. Chaciti McMorris, a pediatric burn survivor, courageously shared her story and testimony, leaving us touched by her love for her health care team and inspired by her goal to help other children suffering from burns. As she heads off to her first year at Texas State University, Chaciti plans to become a Child Life Specialist. "It made me want to do that with my life. It made me want to help little kids like me," said Chaciti as she recounted the importance her exceptional University Hospital team had on her recovery. We are so grateful for the community of health care providers, donors, volunteers, and supporters who made this evening possible. Because of you, future pediatric patients like Chaciti will thrive without limits. And because of you, the most advanced and compassionate pediatric burn care will be available to the children within our communities. Thank You,

Sara M. Alger, CFRE President, University Health Foundation

Looking Forward In 2008,

With the threat of Hurricane Katrina looming, University Hospital's Level I Trauma Team recognized a critical need, the need to make comprehensive pediatric burn care accessible here— in San Antonio and across South Texas. With the impending storm, all of South Texas was about to lose access to critical pediatric burn because, at that time, our region relied on Houston for this specialized care. This meant that patients would need to travel as far as San Diego to receive the lifesaving trauma care they might need. However, University Health, thanks to the plan of a courageous and visionary team—stepped up to build a program here. And they did just that. They established a program, and they grew that program. University Health now has the expertise to care for complex injuries, from initial burn resuscitation and surgery to multi-step burn rehabilitation. The Pediatric Burn Center at Univerity Hospital is rated as one of the best in the country, consistently placing in the top 5% of overall outcomes amongst verified national pediatric trauma centers. But with that reputation comes a responsibility that its team does not take lightly—a duty to push the boundaries of exceptional burn care, leading the way for future children like Chaciti. As San Antonio and surrounding communities grow exponentially, the number of injured patients treated at the trauma center will continue to rise. University Health is planning for these demands while innovating care to improve patient experiences, healing, and outcomes. It will accomplish this vision by: Becoming burn certified as verified by the American Burn Association (ABA). After qualifying for this certification, University Health will be the fourth in the state to have this high mark of distinction. Being an innovative steward of advanced pediatric health care, which requires passionate experts supported by trained teams, support services, and specialized diagnostic tools and equipment specifically for children. Building on University Health's commitment to patient-centered, compassionate care to heal the whole person, body, and mind, not just the injuries.
