Bobbi Brown on Jones Road and Transformation The Balance of Hookup Culture How Kairo is Transforming the Narrative Surrounding Mental Health

Self Help Books A Peek at The Playground The Reality Behind “Abroad Changed Me” The Transition from College Life to Working Life

The opinions expressed here are not those of Syracuse University, the Office of Student Activities, the Student Association, or the Student Body.

LETTERS FROM T ransformations don’t occur overnight. They take time and are often gradual. When coming up with a theme for this year’s print issue, my Co-Editor-In-Chief, Britney, and I took a minute to reflect on these past few years. Our lives have changed drastically, and it is still unclear what long-lasting effects Covid-19 will have on our physical and mental health, our social skills, and even our culture as a society. One thing that’s for certain is that we are all in the midst of a transformation. Whether we see it or not, our minds are evolving, and we are emerging every day. As I look ahead, I find myself entering a new chapter, with remerging characters, new ones, and fresh settings, and I recognize that many people are experiencing similar situations. As spring and summer approach we often get caught up in trying to transform into our “summer selves”. Take “Hot Girl Summer,” for example. In reality, we are so often blind to the transformations that have already been occurring within ourselves. This issue aims to highlight the big and small transformations that occur every day. From physical transformations like graduating college (pg. 38) to the smaller ones like buying a wardrobe for your first big internship (pg. 7). Our lives are full of changes, and it’s important to recognize them all. When thinking about emergence within the beauty industry, none other than Bobbi Brown came to mind. Her brand, Jones Road Beauty, is her “reinvention of a lifetime” and for this issue, I had the pleasure of interviewing her (pg. 25 ). What stood out most to me was her ability to successfully pivot and manage all her careers. Brown’s capability to transform a clean beauty brand into a successful line is a true testament to her entrepreneurial and work ethic skills. Transform, as a verb, means to make some sort of drastic change, which indicates that while we are evolving subconsciously, we also can do so consciously. 101 Essays That Will Change The Way You Think (pg. 33) is an active way to start changing your thoughts for the better. Sometimes it takes active work to get out of a funk and change your mindset. Change doesn’t always occur overnight. As I ruffle the pages of my black journal from the fall semester, I can’t help but light up as I read over my manifestations. Editor in Chief of University Girl sits at the top of a bulleted list of things I want to accomplish, and I am still in disbelief about taking on this role. Transitioning from a stylist editor to EIC has been a big transition, but luckily, I had my Co-Editor in UGIRL 1

Chief, Britney Kirwan, right there by my side. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner in crime. Taking on this position as EIC has been such an amazing opportunity and one that I am forever grateful for! I wouldn’t be here if not for Chloe Hechter’s trust and faith in me, so I’m extremely appreciative of her guidance throughout this semester. I couldn’t have asked for a better team and am forever grateful for Ainsley Holman, Orli Rein, Sammy Fuss, and Amanda Smith, who have worked countless hours to help with the completion of this magazine. Their dedication, passion, and hard work don’t go unrecognized. I would also like to highlight Katie Hill for not only handling the production of our magazine but for being a great friend. This magazine would not be complete if not for Charlie Wenig’s ability to help manage everything, so thank you so much for your hard work. This semester’s section editors were amazing to work with and I couldn’t have asked for a better team! A big shoutout to Sophie Walter for putting up with our crazy photoshoots and lavish ideas. You helped our creative visions come true. Thank you so much to everyone involved in the print and digital side of things. All your hard work and talent don’t go unnoticed. I am so honored to have worked with such a talented team and can’t wait to see what incredible things everyone accomplishes. But also remind yourself to celebrate the things you have already accomplished! This issue is a transformation of University Girl itself. Happy reading! Xx, Amanda Rosenthal

THE EDITORS

othing in this life is guaranteed. We have certainly learned that within these past couple of years of living in a pandemic. From not having a real high school graduation to my first year of college taking all online classes, I have definitely learned how to quickly adapt to change and to expect the unexpected. We all have. None of us know what could happen tomorrow, and many of us college students have learned to not take anything for granted. We believed that the theme of Transformation for this issue accurately describes our world and what it has gone through in such a short period of time. There has been a transformation in the way that we live, as well as the way that we think. One of the most important is the way that we now view our mental health. It’s been very important to us in times like this to acknowledge the hardships we all encounter at times. This is why we wanted to spotlight Katie Pimental, and her wonderful brand Kairo (pg. 29). Katie and her business partner, Hannah Matthy, started a clothing brand (...as college students, might I add!) in order to break the stigma around mental health. This semester at UGirl, we wanted to bring up these types of conversations to show the actual realities of life and not just what you see on social media.

This is a big transition all of us will make after college and want to help others make this change smoother. I am so grateful to have been one of the Editors-In-Chiefs this semester. Being part of a team full of smart and ambitious young women makes me proud to say that I am a part of this magazine. Everyone has worked so hard this semester, and I want to recognize everyone that has made this print issue possible. I would like to first and foremost thank Amanda Rosenthal, who has been a pleasure to work with this semester. I honestly could not imagine being Co-Editor-In-Chief with anyone else. I would also like to thank Chloe Hechter who entrusted the magazine to us and was always there to help, even while halfway across the world. A big thank you to Ainsley Holman and Orli Rein for being our amazing Creative Directors, and Sammy Fuss and Amanda Smith for playing a major role in our graphic design. I would also like to extend my thank you to Charlie Wenig, Rhea Srivastava, Layla Harrison, Aviya Garg, Mia Gelb, Katie Hill, Ellie Batten, Ally-Lain Hedden, Isabelle Bergstein, Jenna Lopes, Madison Manczko, Jenny Destefano, and the rest of our editorial team. Lastly, I would like to thank anyone who has contributed to the magazine this semester as it is so very much appreciated.

Now to move into the next section of the magazine, we are transforming dark, neutral colors from Winter into bright, vibrant colors for Spring. We wanted our “Blazers and Pumps” (pg. 9) shoot to embody optimism and positivity of what lays ahead for us and to inspire others to transform out of their comfort zones. We want to embrace everybody’s differences and shine a light on how each of us is unique. Moving on to hair and makeup, we decided to do something a little bit different by splitting it into two separate shoots. To go along with the theme of transforming out of your comfort zone, our “Strawberry Shortcake”(pg.17) shoot is meant to display that same message. Professional makeup artist and founder of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown, is the perfect example of someone who has done just that. In our “interview w/ Bobbi Brown” (pg. 25) piece, she shares with us the ways in which she has transformed her business into a new makeup brand known as Jones Road beauty. Our “Bring On The Gems” (pg. 21) shoot, as said before, is meant to be unique and unlike something most people have seen. It’s different, and that’s what makes it so special!

Xx, Britney Kirwan

Live from Syracuse, New York, it’s Wednesday Night Live? Yes, that’s exactly what you heard! The Playground is a student-run comedy club that hosts a show every Wednesday night. This group of students is transforming the way college students view nightlife and allows for more of an expression of this university’s talent (pg. 35). As many of the members are graduating, we thought it was important to include an article on how to transition from college life to working life (pg. 38). UGIRL 2

how to:

create the ultimate capsule wardrobe

just in time for graduation (and a grown up job)!

words: ellie batten | design: vivian yang

H

ere are the facts: growing up is scary and clothes are expensive. I’m willing to bet that if we knew how much money we spend each year trying to keep up with trends, we’d be very scared. Balancing an amazing wardrobe and being a college student is hard work, especially financially– I speak from experience. As graduation creeps around the corner and job offers begin to roll out, your clothes need to make the shift from college girl to working woman. This is where capsule wardrobes come into play. A capsule wardrobe is the accumulation of a few timeless staple pieces that can be easily mixed and matched. The result? An affordable and long-lasting wardrobe transformation.

brilliant blouses

A white tank and button down are two of the most versatile pieces in any closet. You can pair either with jeans, a blazer, or a silk skirt– totally different looks with only a few pieces. Plus, each of these pieces are lifesavers in terms of layering. You can easily transition a white tank from winter to summer by ditching the jeans and leather jacket for a pair of shorts. Free People and J.Crew have so many great options for these white staples. A cable knit sweater is another must-have. It can be a turtleneck or crew neck– whatever you like best. You can throw it on over a slip dress for a more formal look or dress it down with high waisted jeans.

tailored trousers

Everyone needs a good pair of jeans. Find a pair that fits you like a glove in a cut that is super flattering. You can wear jeans with pretty much UGIRL 5

everything– dress them up with black stilettos and a blazer, or dress them down with some sneakers and a graphic tee. Agolde and Good American have great pieces that truly stand the test of time. A pair of trousers are a must, too. You can pair them with a blazer for a business casual look, but you can totally make them less formal with a white tank and sneakers. Djerf Avenue and Reformation have amazing jeans that are super flattering– plus they have petite and tall options, so no one is left out!

dresses for days

No closet is complete without a little black dress– you know this piece is special when it has its own acronym: LBD. They’re sexy, elegant and can be worn in so many different ways. You can pair an LBD with black stilettos for a night out, or with simple white sneakers and a sweater. Either way, the outfit will be timeless and tasteful. The basic LBD is a must-have, but so is a good statement piece. Find a dress with a fun print– floral, polka dots, or stripes, it doesn’t matter. Just make sure it’s a print you would gravitate towards more than once. Revolve and Reformation have so many great dresses, whether you’re looking for an LBD or a statement piece.

outerwear obsessed

Full disclosure: I have a jacket addiction– they complete any outfit, and I could keep buying them until the day I die. That being said, there are a few jackets that everyone needs. There’s nothing better than a good trench coat. You can dress them up or down (are you sensing a trend

here?) and no matter what, you’ll look like you mean business. Pair it with a neutral sweater or turtleneck, trousers, and black boots for a more casual look, or pair it with a blazer and trousers if you’re headed to the office. Speaking of blazers… you have to get one. Sorry, I don’t make the rules. They can be professional and fun– you can wear them with trousers or with jeans and a white tank. Last but definitely not least: the leather jacket. They’re edgy, classic, and they go with everything. You can also wear them in every season except summer– definitely a must-have staple.

savvy shoes

Black boots, white sneakers, and neutral heels can complete virtually any look. Pair the boots with trousers and button down for a business casual look– make it more laid back by swapping the button down for a tank. White sneakers, I’m sure we all know, go with everything. You can wear them in every season, whether you’re going out or chilling in jeans and a tee shirt. Everyone needs a pair of neutral colored heels that can easily transition from the office to a night out. Pair the heels with a LBD, or pair them trousers and a blazer for two totally different looks (you’ll look like a real adult). Steve Madden has amazing boots and heels. For white sneakers, check out Veja for super cute styles. Capsule wardrobes are amazing for many reasons– they make for a timeless closet with pieces that can be worn in so many different ways. Styling staples that can take you from the office to a night out will also save you so much money as you navigate entering the working world.

farewell whistles and bells, hello fashion uniform words: vivian yang | design: samantha fuss

Getting out of bed in the morning is the second hardest thing. The first? Picking out your outfit of the day, of course. From effortlessly chic to comfy athleisure, what you wear expresses who you are. Capsule wardrobes capture that essence and package it in a way that not only helps you, but your wallet. Transforming your overflowing closet is no easy task, but you can start by finding out which capsule wardrobe compliments your personality the best.

If you picked mostly As

the new york way

Minimalist, edgy, and cool– just like Zoe Kravitz. Your capsule wardrobe is filled with dark neutrals and elevated basics, with a few statement pieces thrown into the mix. It’s mini skirts, loose trousers, and long trench coats. Put up your sleek back bun, and you are ready to trek all over the city looking photo-ready.

If you picked mostly Bs

west coast beachy

Your capsule wardrobe is the dissection of Hailey Bieber’s outfits. The ribbed tanks will carry you through the finicky LA weather. The idea of wearing a cardigan as a top also doesn’t phase you. Of course, no matter how lowkey your fit may be, you never fail to disappoint with a pair of cool sneakers.

If you picked mostly Cs

scandanavian chic

You preach the Scandi value of lagom: not too much, not too little. Matilda Djerf is your go-to fashion inspiration, you love the effortless put-together look. Think of a barely fastened button-up with an oversized blazer paired with loosely fit business pants. With a black headband as the finishing touch, you will turn heads.

If you picked mostly Ds

nineties nostalgia

You can’t let go of 90s fashion (we don’t blame you). It’s all about relaxed jeans, asymmetrical tops, mini skirts, and cool accessories. Shoulder bags will never leave your wardrobe. it’s time to channel your inner Rachel Green.

matching sets

Trust me– you can never go wrong with a matching moment! If you want to feel especially put-together without all the effort, channel your inner Jackie Kennedy with a matching blazer and skirt or pant duo. Pro-tip: check out ShopCider for Scream-Queens-esqe sets. You can even add in a pop of your own style with an *office-appropriate* tank top underneath. Make it your own with your favorite jewelry– preferably if you match your metals. Business bonus points for keeping it monochromatic.

slip dresses

No matter where you’re interning, you’ll want to dress for comfort on top of professionalism– it makes all the difference when you’re working long shifts and especially for tough commutes. Slip dresses are a perfect choice to keep it breezy and comfy while still looking chic. You can also layer up with a cardigan or blazer to combat overly harsh air conditioning– oh, the struggles of literally never having a stable body temp. Pair this look with chunky jewelry and some mules (a.k.a. the socially acceptable flip-flop) and you’re ready to conquer another long day.

button-ups and midi skirts

If you’re looking for a go-to option that’s easy to switch up, look no further than the button-up and midi skirt! Both pieces are super lightweight and are sure to keep you cool, while still being dressy enough to work in a professional setting. Plus, if you stock up on shirts in a few basic colors and skirts in a few bold patterns, you can keep the outline without becoming an outfit-repeater.

UGIRL 7

jumpsuits

Arguably the easiest way to look professional with the least amount of effort is courtesy of the jumpsuit. Since it’s just a one piece, it’s super easy to style to fit your fashion needs and won’t clash with accessories you already have. Trust me– you’ll appreciate the time you save by not having to pick out a top and pants, especially if a few extra minutes in the morning are just enough to grab Starbucks on the way.

chunky loafers

When it comes to shoes, you’ll need to equally weigh the factors of comfort, cuteness and versatility. This might seem like a lot, considering that it’s so difficult to find a shoe that fits all three in your size, but chunky loafers check all the boxes. Trendy thanks to Emma Chamberlain, comfy due to the large platform, and versatile because a basic brown or black will fit right in with any outfit. ASOS and Zara are also basically chunky loafer warehouses. You’re welcome.

t’s no secret that having a blazer in your closet is a musthave. Blazers can elevate your style and turn a simple outfit into something that is street style ready. While blazers are often heavy outerwear to keep you warm in the colder months, it’s important that we don’t abandon this fashion staple as the flowers bloom and the sun finally comes out. Styling blazers in the spring and summer is a fun way to add a pop of color to your go-to outfit and they can be a great staple piece even as the temperature begins to rise. Here are the best ways to incorporate blazers into your warm-weather style:

wear it as a dress

Investing in an oversized blazer to wear as a dress can be the ultimate head-turner for any spring or summer gathering. Pastel or bright colored blazers emulate all the spring vibes and is an easy go-to when you want to be comfortable but chic at the same time.

it’s all in the details

Blazers are especially versatile because they can become an accessory piece to any outfit. A personal style favorite is to coordinate the color of your blazer with another piece in your outfit. This will make the outfit more harmonious and you’ll look very put together, even if you are dressing the blazer down for a more casual look.

keep it casual

Ditch your zip-up hoodie and embrace your inner “modeloff-duty” by pairing a blazer with biker shorts or sweat shorts. This will create the ultimate cool-girl look and keep things casual yet extremely trendy.

dress it up

Blazers can also be utilized for more formal spring and summer events. They are the perfect summer night coverup, especially for a night out when you need a cute jacket but don’t want to dig up your winter puffer.

monochrome is a girl’s best friend:

It’s time to embrace monochrome outfits for spring and summer– especially if this outfit involves a blazer. Make a fashion statement and stand out in a crowd in a monochrome blazer set. Blazers are the perfect way to start your monochrome journey and explore the world of matching colors.

things to block: him and colors

Color blocking is one of our favorite spring and summer trends. Create a bold look and contrast the colors in your outfit with a blazer that is a completely different (yet complementary) color. Be brave with color blocking and you might be the next blazer trendsetter.

Make a statement this spring and step out in your favorite blazer using the style tips above. You won’t regret it!

upgrade your living space

t’s time to ditch dorm room decor. Cramped spaces and twin XL beds are a thing of the past, and, as we start to move up in the world, it’s only natural that our taste improves as well. Don’t get it twisted, though: redesigning your interior space does NOT mean dulling it down or removing the things that let your personality shine. It’s totally possible to achieve the perfect combination of classy and youthful, and we’re going to show you how. Let’s start with the two things we’re definitely leaving behind: Amazon LED strips and those fake ivy vines that look very, well, fake. Nothing screams “freshman year dorm room” like plastic plants or light strips plastered chaotically on your walls. Instead, opt for *gasp* real plants that’ll add some natural beauty to your space. You’re an adult now, you can handle it! Believe it or not, you don’t have to ditch your lights. Instead of LED strips that clutter your walls, go for LED light bulbs! Using an LED bulb with a funky floor lamp will create the same vibe in a cleaner, more unique way. Plus, lamp shopping is bound to make you feel like you have your sh*t together, no? Let’s talk about wall decor. Before you get angry, no, you don’t have to throw out your Harry Styles poster. Posters are an amazing way to show off your personality and interests,

so why not display them in a creative way? Scotch tape is an easy choice, but it won’t elevate your room like a frame would. Finding cool, decorative frames for your posters will make them super eye-catching and classy, and just imagine how much better Harry will look in a nice frame! When choosing furniture and decorations, go in with a specific color scheme in mind. An important part of upgrading your space is making it cohesive, and whether you like calming neutrals or something spunky and bright, choosing this in advance will make it a lot easier to find things that match. That being said, don’t be afraid to experiment with fun colors and patterns. Maximalism is so in right now, so go a little crazy! Transitioning into the real world can be intimidating, and that’s why it’s so important to have a unique space that feels like home. The best thing about moving out of your dorm room is the new freedom to personalize this space to your heart’s content, so make it your own! After a long day of girl-bossing, you deserve to come back to an apartment that looks great and feels like you. Adulting just became so much easier, so let’s get decorating! UGIRL 14

HARNESSING HEMP: HOW TO INCORPORATE

CBDWELLNESS ROUTINE INTO YOUR

perking up without sparking up.

words: ainsley holman | design: samantha fuss

F

rom patches to gummies to pills, CBD has entered the world of self care with gusto and grace. In case you’ve been MIA, cannabidiol (CBD) oil is a product derived from marijuana plants and is a master at quelling stress, relieving chronic pain, kickstarting neuroproductivity, and more. While it may seem daunting at first, CBD works wonders, especially when used properly! Here are University Girl’s top picks for incorporating CBD into your weekly (or daily) self care ritual.

Incorporating infused bath bombs into your routine is the perfect introduction to CBD’s pain relieving powers. The skin, our body’s largest organ, acts as a sponge for the CBD and essential oils. Being that it is a full-body topical application, these bath bombs work quickly, providing immense comfort to aching bones or sore muscles. Kush Queen’s Relieve CBD Bath Bomb ($16) is our current favorite, with the ability to choose a specific dosage or color.

There is nothing more luxurious than treating yourself (and your dark circles) to an eye mask! The skin under your eyes is incredibly delicate and requires specific care and attention, which is why we have been loving the Patchology MoodPatch Chill Mode Eye Gels ($15). Containing CBD, reishi, and snow mushroom, these patches work wonders on tired eyes. Pop them in your fridge the night before for an extra-cooling effect! UGIRL 15

CBD topical creams are a great way to target specific areas in need of soothing. The CBD Body Lotion from Lord Jones ($60) is an exceptional choice, as it contains 200mg of full spectrum CBD in each bottle. Its hydrating properties accompany its cooling nature, making it the ideal topical lotion for pain and aches.

CBD tinctures are a super common way of ingesting cannabinoids! Xula’s Calm and Clarity Drops ($68) are the perfect addition to your self care routine. The company offers a range of drops depending on what you are looking for, but our current favorite are the “ah!” drops, intended for relaxation and mental clarity. Containing hemp, passionflower, mugwort, damiana, and more, you’ll feel the effects of these liquid lovelies within an hour.

Gummies provide the perfect amount of “chill” without the strong scents or tastes commonly associated with other digestible CBD products. There are a lot of CBD gummies on the market, one of them being Hollyweed’s CBD Gummy Cubes ($24). The quality and taste of Hollyweed’s products, as well as their certified third party lab testing, make them a great option. Pop these 100% organic candies for a relaxing evening (or day, we get it) and experience the calming effects of CBD!

All of these products are the perfect way to slip into the cannabis and hemp wellness world. Just remember, whether you’re a CBD newbie or cannabis connoisseur, play it safe when it comes to dosages, no one wants to get too chilled out.

D O L B Masks Off: The Return

of

The

Red Lip

words: emily bruck | design gianna corrente

UGIRL 19

S

ince March of 2020 our world as we know it has been undoubtedly altered. Masks on, smiles shielded, and makeup limited, the importance of facial features has shriveled up to solely a cat eye and some high quality mascara. But now, it is expected that lip products will make a steady comeback. A calm natural tone to brighten up your skin, or a bold red lip to help those pearly whites stand out, lip decoration will make all the difference in our newest (and old?) normal. The most important thing is that you let your smile be shown to the world, because it’s beautiful.

“Most can relate to the annoyance of everyday life with a mask. From our makeup rubbing off, to the inability to broadcast our smiles, the presence of COVID-19 has heavily affected the way we present ourselves in person.” But now, with the removal of a mask mandate, it’s time to reinvent ourselves with the inclusion of the lower half of our face. The first and most essential feature of this: your smile. So, in this article we’ll highlight our recommendations for the best lip colors and products to get your post-covid look kickstarted. First, the classy lip moisturizer and shiner: Laneige Lip Mask. This product has taken the media by storm. Tik Tok influencers flaunt it, recommend it, and sponsor it. The Laneige Lip Mask is a moisturizing lip gel that contains hyaluronic acid, vitamin c, and other hydrating ingredients. Not only is it great to get those lips looking healthy, but it looks so effortlessly cute in action. Upon application it tints your lips slightly based on your color/ essence of choice (Original Berry, Vanilla, Gummy Bear, etc), and creates a sexy shine. It sells for $22 at Sephora for a 0.7 oz container. This product is undoubtedly necessary for looking cute as your 8ams without doing your makeup.

Next, our recommendation for every girl’s fav, plumping lip gloss: we say Dior for the win! The Dior Lip Maximizer creates a glamorous plumping effect with a shimmer finish. It is made to be long lasting and comfortable despite its plumping effect. Coming in 12+ colors, from shiny to matte, Dior Lip Max is a musthave for your signature plumping look post-masks. Our next recommendation is a lip gloss to buy if you don’t want to break the bank. We’ll always recommend trusty ulta brand products, which usually sell in the $5 to $7 range. We saved the best for last. Now that your pearly whites are out in the open and on the move, it is essential that you have a solid red lipstick in your toolbox. Let’s contrast your beautiful teeth with your newly moisturized lips from your Laneige lip mask with a bold red! Our rec if you’re willing to drop some bills: Armani Lip Power Longwear Satin Lipstick. This lipstick is the classic bold red, selling at Sephora for $40. The quality definitely is worth the price, as it gives the lips a natural comfortable feel despite the bold color. The color is extremely pigmented and lasts for a long time. We’d recommend the neutral red (color 400), or the fighter warm red (403). It gives glamor. And your classic drugstore bold red, which also won’t fail: Nyx Butter Lipstick. This is the most classic drugstore lipstick. It has a matte finish, and sells for $6.50. It is pigmented and comes in a variety of colors. Whether moisturizing your lips or finishing up a full face of makeup, lip products can make all the difference. Now that masks have made their slow exit, it is now more important than ever to spice up your facial features and your smile. Some Laniege for subtle glam, to an Armani bold red, you’re sure to upscale your look with all of these products.

pring is all about vibrant colors, attending fun picnic dates with friends, frolicking in a Love Shack Fancy dress, the list goes on. You want to look your absolute best, especially for the season that succeeds the cold winter and precedes the perfect summer. Forget your dyson airwrap and grab a bottle of glue (hair safe, of course), because crystals, rhinestones, gems (whatever you prefer to call it) – is the new it girl hairstyle. Remember, when we were kids and had our friends apply tinsel to our hair during sleepovers? Hair gems is kind of a similar concept, but the chic and improved version. I mean who can say , wearing jewelry does not elevate your look when it’s attached to your hair. Decorating your hair with gems isn’t a one way approach either– there are a variety of possibilities on how you can play around with colorful embellishments to feel like you’re scrapbooking on either yourself or your companions. Below is a how-to guide on how you can achieve this hairstyle and feel like a gem, no pun intended!

1 Start with clean hair. Comb down or hairspray any flyaways or knots!

2 Grab nonhazardous or wig/hair safe glue. 3 Lay out the gems you want to attach. 4 Apply to head, pressing firmly. 5 Rock your hairstyle with confidence! Audrey Hepburn once said, “To pull off any look, wear it with confidence.” The last step is crucial, and will make sure everyone takes note that you are a walking disco ball. Shine bright like a diamond, right? There’s nothing more unique than a nice set of jewelry affixed to your beautiful luscious mane. And remember, even if life can’t be perfect, your hair can be.

THE REINVENTION OF A LIFETIME

“there is nothing more beautiful than confidence, that’s what I teach.” words: amanda rosenthal | design: samantha fuss

You are a beauty expert. What motivated you to create your clean makeup brand, Jones Road Beauty? When I left my namesake brand in 2016, I didn’t really know what I was going to do next. Then, in 2018, Masterclass called me and invited me to do a Masterclass. I was the first and only makeup artist to do one, and as I was preparing for that, I searched through so many brands of makeup but the kind of makeup I wanted to use – clean, no makeup, makeup -- simply didn’t exist. So I made it. Our theme for this issue is all about transformation and emergence. In what ways do you consider Jones Road a transformation?

T

his spring, I had the pleasure of interviewing makeup artist Bobbi Brown. A true household makeup name who is currently in the process of a transformation of her own. Brown, 64, founded Bobbi Brown Cosmetics in 1991. Now, she has transitioned into a “no-makeup-makeup” career through her new brand “Jones Road.” Brown is truly reinventing her name and changing the way women wear makeup. You graduated from Emerson College with a degree in theatrical makeup and photography. What inspired you to pursue such a creative major and career? Emerson wasn’t the first college I attended. I quickly found out that the traditional college experience wasn’t for me, as I was not a great student. I wanted to drop out, but my parents wouldn’t let me. One day, my mom asked me, “if it was your birthday and you could do whatever you wanted, what would you do?” I said I wanted to go and play with makeup. I found Emerson College in Boston, and they let me create my own major where I was able to study theatrical makeup.

As someone who has been a makeup artist for 40 years and a lifelong entrepreneur who launched one successful beauty brand already, Jones Road is the reinvention of a lifetime. It was the opportunity that brought me back to what I love most, which is being a makeup artist and helping women feel better about themselves inside and out.

It’s also been fun to be an indie brand again and launch a direct-to-consumer business, in the middle of a pandemic. I basically had to take everything I already knew about launching a new brand and reinvent the rules – and I also really like being the boss again so that’s been fun too. What was the most challenging obstacle you had to overcome when creating Jones Road? The most challenging part has been hiring the right people fast enough. Jones Road has grown quickly, and we have a very small team. We’re learning how to scale up and put processes in place to keep up with our growth. Having been involved industry for years, what you seen in beauty

in the beauty major shift have trends recently?

The beauty industry has changed so much since I launched my first brand. Social media has transformed the industry. Now, we can develop direct relationships with our customers via Instagram, TikTok and YouTube. When they have questions, I answer them directly. Also, e-commerce has revolutionized how we buy beauty products. You no longer need to be in a big department store to build a beauty brand – Jones Road is sold directly to our customers via our website. If you could go back and give your younger self one beauty tip, what would it be? Just be yourself, and it’s all going to be okay.

You have a large following on TikTok. Why did you ultimately decide to go on Tiktok, and what do you attribute your success to? At the beginning of the year, my son, Cody, who is also our director of e-commerce, encouraged me to try TikTok, so with my iPhone I recorded two short videos. In the first one, I just introduced myself and asked the audience what kind of information they wanted. In the second video, I talked about how I don’t believe in contouring your nose – that you should embrace your strong features because that’s what makes you unique. I didn’t have a script. I didn’t overthink it, and in 24 hours, the contouring video went viral, now having over 8 million views. You are very passionate about female empowerment and mentorship. What has been the best advice you have received from a mentor? Leonard ask for

Lauder once told me “Don’t permission. Ask for forgiveness.”

There are many young women and men who look up to all that you have accomplished. What is one piece of advice you would offer to those looking to get involved in the beauty industry? Be focused. Be tenacious. Don’t quit your day job right away. Develop a great product first. I can’t tell you how many people come to me for advice on how to launch a brand, but they don’t even have a product yet.

You own a successful makeup line, are an owner of The George Hotel, have written several different books, on top of everything else you manage. How are you able to pivot and succeed in managing all these channels? I don’t have a hobby – I don’t play tennis, and I don’t golf – but I love to create and launch new businesses. I’m a curious person by nature, and I like to try new things. I guess being an entrepreneur is my hobby.

lthough it is hard to admit, it seems like there is a constant pressure to participate in hookup culture, especially as a college student. In our youth, it seems that it is a common belief that we are the hottest version of ourselves and that we should be attracting the most people during our time at college. The hookup culture is not for everyone, and you need to shift gears if you have had one too many embarrassing dates or “Hookups from Hell.” It’s time to weigh the pros and cons.

schedule for yourself where you can put personal limits on hookup culture. Of course, the planner caters to everyone, whether you want to hook up once a week, month, or are just really sick of it and plan to hook up once a semester. Hookup culture is great and teaches us to not settle for the first person we meet, but sometimes we want to take more time for ourselves. Essentially, The Hookup Planner is for those who are looking to hookup less if you feel like you may be losing intimacy with yourself and/or others.

Of course, hookup culture has its ups and downs. Casual dating is great for storytimes with your friends and getting to know your type, but sometimes taking a break can help create balance. Creating balance within hookup culture includes doing a personal check of whether your routine answers the question: Am I doing this for myself or for others? It is easy to get caught up in others’ expectations of ourselves, but it is important to know that when having relationships that you are staying true to yourself and having fun.

I know, you just read the subtitle and thought, The Hookup whattt? The name itself is silly, but the concept is essential. The Hookup Planner is a

Balancing the dating scene is essential. Although it may seem crazy, putting limits on how many people you hook-up with over the course of a week or month can help you create a more intimate relationship with yourself and others just without the sex part. This not only applies to our single ladies but applies to our girls that are in relationships. Talking to my cuffed girls, feeling like sex is a central part of your relationship can diminish the intimacy of knowing each other. Taking small breaks throughout the week or spending more quality time together by having date nights or cooking dinners together can transform your relationship and help you learn more about each other.

Now back to the single ladies, learning how to balance your sex life can create a more intimate relationship with yourself by taking time to understand what you really want. This also opens a lot more time to spend with your friends and create stronger relationships with them through needed ladies’ nights.

making your socials all about you

If you are trying to take the backseat on hooking up, it may be time to revamp your feed. Personally, Pinterest has always been my go-to since the algorithm is always changing. After a couple of pins of that cute dress you want and how to do Hailey Bieber’s slicked bun, and your feed is all about you. We are always surrounded by social media, so it’s important to be able to filter your feed to be positive, aspirational, and reflect your true interests since it is one of the most influential aspects of our lives. Creating a balance in hookup culture is not just about having less sex, but it is about reflecting on your wants and needs. Whether it’s to focus more on self care or spending more time with your friends, having a balance of your sex, social, and personal life is essential, especially during the fundamental years of our life.

HOW

kairo is

transforming the narrative surrounding MENTAL HEALTH

UGIRL 29

C

o-owners Katie Pimentel and Hannah Matthy never imagined that their brand Kairo would become what it is today. With a shared passion for improving mental health and a little help from Tiktok, their brand now has over 18 thousand followers and continues to transform this stigmatized narrative. From the age of 13, the two constantly helped one another with everything; however, the effects of growing up in a small town where mental health is judged and silenced truly shaped Katie’s life. With the help of her best friend Hannah, the two came together to create a brand that eliminated these judgments.

BE KIND TO YOUR MIND @shop.kairo

“Mental health and anxiety were not discussed in my town, and I felt that it was a very judged topic. However, Hannah and I had been on the same cheerleading team since the age of 13, and while we lived an hour apart, I would still When determining what the name of their brand would be, the girls go to Hannah when I needed help with my mental state knew they wanted something unique and relating to their interests. because we understood and could rely on each other.” “We decided to search for unique words with a cool As we know, Tiktok began to take over our lives once the meaning, and Kairosclerosis came up. It means pandemic hit in 2020. Quarantine emphasized the importance ‘the moment you realize you are truly happy,’ but of taking time for yourself. With trends about self-care tips, we decided to shorten it and make it into Kairo, journaling, and meditation being at the top of everyone’s For which we felt represented who we were perfectly.” You Page, the narrative about mental health began to shift. During a Facetime call, the two talked about a trend they had come across on tik-tok about transforming pictures, which sparked an idea to create their brand. They decided to base said company on the normalization of mental health struggles.

As we all have seen, a lot of companies usually take performative action when using mental health phrases or topics, but not Kairo. Kairo works to make sure their audiences know that they represent all parts of mental health throughout their content. Kairo’s journey started with wanting to break “We thought it was cool and joked around about the idea, all stigmas, and it is something they will continue doing.

but then we realized we could actually make a brand - we had so many resources and could absolutely do this. Once we started to think about it and facetimed for hours, we began making Google Slides filled with design. We began to think we could make something real out of this.”

UGIRL 30

“Brands will create clothes about mental health because they know it will sell. Many people around us experience mental disorders that they don’t discuss. We wanted to be a brand that represents everyone and emphasizes that no one is alone in this fight.”

Rising influencers such as Ana Stowell have helped pave the way for Kairo. By wearing Kairo merchandise in various TikTok videos, she helped the newly developed brand insert itself on social media.

By establishing this presence, the girls were soon able to work with other influencers who shared similar values. For After having created their brand identity and core company values, example, having recently worked with Conconye, they were they began to think of what they could sell. They decided on tieable to create the “Break the Stigma, Boys Cry Too” hoodie. dye hoodies with small phrases or quotes embroidered on them.

“We started with dropping sweatshirts which people would bid a price on, and the highest bidder would win the item- it was during the very early stages. We were tiedying these sweatshirts ourselves. It was very hands-on.” From the bids, they established their website, where they would post pre-orders for customers. As pre-orders grew, a shift in the company came with it; they soon realized they needed a home base. With the help and guidance of SmartFish Group, Hannah’s dad’s company, they were able to receive marketing, graphic design, and production assistance. Along with the tie-dye hoodies came tote bags, regular hoodies, crewnecks, and a world of accessories. Some of the pieces found on their website or Instagram have embroidered phrases like “ You Are More,” “ Make Meaning,” or “Dream Until It’s Your Reality.”

“Kairosclerosis means ‘the moment you realize you are truly happy,’ but we decided to shorten it and make it into Kairo, which we felt represented who we were perfectly.”

UGIRL 31

“If you had asked me at ten years old what I’d be doing when I was in my early 20s, I would have never guessed I would be a successful female business owner.” “When these influencers look back on all the brands they have worked with; we want them to think of us as super sweet, supportive, and constantly checking in. We also want to connect with the people we work with and ensure that their mantras connect to ours.” Esteeming themselves as a brand that is there for everyone is a value that Kairo holds in high regards. Hannah and Katie work hard to build genuine connections with the brands and influencers they work with.

“We don’t just want people to check in on their friends and talk about mental health; we want to be doing that with our greater community as well.” Kairo has helped change the narrative and make mental health an acceptable topic to discuss in various settings. They have changed the stereotypes and created avenues for people to feel understood and supported.

“The growth of TikTok as a platform has given people a great outlet to talk about these things. It has made it normal for people to talk about their struggles and eliminate the stigmas surrounding mental health.” It is hard for the girls to comprehend their quarantine company’s transformation into a successful brand. Kairo has changed their lives. By inspiring their audience and collaborating with influencers, the two are in awe of what this project has become.

“If you had asked me at ten years old what I’d be doing when I was in my early 20s, I would have never guessed I would be a successful female business owner. I have learned so much from starting Kairo with Katie about how a business works and how to keep it successful beyond just making sales. Kairo is an absolute dream because of the flexibility it gives us and how much passion is truly behind our brand! I have made lifelong friends that I owe to Kairo and am extremely grateful for the amazing community we created.” Kairo will continue to support those battling mental health issues and continue preaching to their audience about ways to help others. Kairo is a brand we can all learn from, and with new exciting projects coming, be sure to follow and keep up to date with their new drops!

There comes a time in everyone’s life where at some point or another we feel the need for change. Whether it be because of a recent breakup, an identity crisis, or even the start of a new chapter in our lives, something triggers that feeling. It sparks chaos as we frantically try to change our habits or start over (as if we haven’t learned anything from the success rate of new year’s resolutions).

One of the most common things people turn to is writing. Whether it be your own or reading someone else’s, there’s some sort of unanimous thinking that this is the best solution (and it usually is!). Writing is one of the most impactful ways to feel heard. It’s a great outlet and truly speaks to everyone. Nothing is more reassuring than knowing you’re not alone in your struggles.

We’re all aware of the millions of self-care books that people preach will “change your life,” but the reality is we rarely take them seriously. However, the more recent self-help book that became all the rage is something that actually seems to stick with people. The viral “Five-Minute Journal” has piggybacked off the idea of manifestation and been said to truly change your life with its daily affirmation prompts. UGIRL 33

This science-backed guided journal has seemed to break the pattern of failed attempts at changing your life. It’s a journal made for people who don’t like to journal…perfect. The book includes six areas of induced thinking. There are a series of set affirmations for you to answer that are divided into morning and night journaling. The first four are meant to be answered in the morning, with the last two as an end-of-day reflection. What’s even better is that it can be done in under five minutes… because that seems to be all the free time we have nowadays. It’s clear this tactic has worked, but is it the only success story? Another book that has also stood out amongst others (and my current favorite), is 101 Essays That Will Change The Way You Think. While the layout of this book isn’t writing-focused, but readingfocused, it accomplishes the same thing. Compiled of 101 short essays, it’s an easy read that allows you to skip around and read whichever one you want.

There isn’t a right way to read this book, which is what makes it so effective and different. You can read the essays completely out of order and highlight them, write about them, or whatever else you like. You can choose to read one a day or read the ones that particularly interest you at that moment. I honestly can say each essay has truly left me astounded with its profoundness and relatability. While I can go on about this book forever, I’ll leave you with one last thought: this book has truly transformed my once written-down affirmations in my five-minute journal into reality. It has actualized how I’m going to change my life, and it all comes down to our perspective and how we think. So grab a pen, because this will be the one time you’re actually excited to write in the margins.

I

t seems like each day Syracuse University feels more and more like a summer camp rather than a school. The students here are constantly finding new ways to make these few blocks surrounding campus feel more like a home- and The Playground is a quintessential example of this. Founded by James Cunningham, Sophie Schlosser, and Liz Goldblatt, The Playground is a student-run comedy club that occurs every Wednesday night in the basement of a local off-campus joint. Opening their doors to the public on February 9th, and has rapidly expanded each week. At this point, people line up outside the house early to make sure they get in before capacity is met.

When I waited in line to get into The Playground, I had no idea what to expect. Immediately, I was greeted at the door, where I paid, and then walked downstairs. I was shocked to see the homey and retro environment however,I couldn’t decide whether to sit on a couch, a stool, a chair, or a bean bag. It’s “A very eclectic assortment, like, it’s very bizarre,” according to set designer, Sarah Goodwin, who states most of the furniture and decor is from Facebook Marketplace. She designed the set to maximize capacity, stating that turning people down is “the worst thing ever because for people to take time out of their Wednesday when they have school, when they have flip night, to come to our show, for us to turn them down is heartbreaking”. Oh, the gratitude! Arguably the best and most intriguing part about The Playground is the community it has created.

would I go again when there are so many people in line to take my spot,” when asked whether she will consider doing another set. To get into The Playground, here’s what you need to know. Get there early- there will be a line. Bring snacks and drinks if you please and $5 for entry (they take Venmo, too)! Come excited and be open to getting to know the comics and everyone else involved in the Playground afterwardthey have a heartwarming story to tell and are seriously the sweetest! Selfishly, I asked Sarah Goodwin whether she would ever consider moving locations to a bigger venue to accommodate a larger audience and to host more shows. She responded, “We think that if we moved locationseven though more people would be able to come to our shows, it would lose a piece of us and it wouldn’t be the same. So, we just try to make it work.” So, you’ll have to wait in line. The charm and sentiment of The Playground is in fact, as special as it sounds, and it’s worth the wait.

“It brings people from all sides of campus togetherathletes, Greek life, and everyone in between.”

Although it operates out of a Comstock basement, this is 100% a professional establishment! There is never a dull comic, and this is because the process of performing a set is quite competitive. Liz, the talent acquisition, communicates with comics before their set to ensure the best show possible.

People are simply there to laugh and express themselves through stand-up comedy, and it is an overwhelmingly supportive and accepting environment for all. They welcome and encourage new comics, and want The Playground to be a place for everyone to be able to express themselves.

hen you consider a semester abroad, you might roll your eyes when thinking of your older friend who “picked up a British accent,” kept referring to their on-campus twobedroom as a “flat,” or bragged about some foreign lover. While “abroad changed me” is a phrase we’ve come to mock, it’s impossible not to change when you spend 3 months away from home, your friends, and everything you know. There’s a lot to learn when you go abroad, and it goes beyond just cultural exploration. If you allow it to be, abroad can be an integral time for self-exploration and growth. Remember what it felt like when your parents first dropped you off at school? You were terrified; thrown into an entirely new place where you had to learn a new way of life. You had to learn how to assimilate to the culture and for the first time, you felt complete and total independence, which was exhilarating and terrifying all at once. That was how I felt when I first landed in London. I went into abroad completely blindly, knowing only my roommate and that I had my mind set on doing absolutely everything possible. The words I lived by were: why wouldn’t I just do everything? I took classes, worked an internship, went out on weekdays and still maintained my job and my grades, and went all over Europe during the weekends. You’re only 21 in Europe once, right? My desire to explore meant obtaining a skill that did, in fact, “change me:” being alone. I mean really alone, not like your typical self-care-alone-timealone. One weekend, I planned to meet up with my friend in Paris. It was my first time flying completely solo, and I UGIRL 37

TRANSITIONING TO POST-GRAD LIFE

the inside scoop from a graduating senior.

C

ollege. Four years of utter bliss filled with lazy mornings, going out as many nights a week as possible, making the best memories with your friends, lazy Fridays with no class, and eating the greasiest fast food you can think of. This is the life associated with college, one of rest and recklessness that we wish we could carry into adulthood. However, as the end of my senior year approaches, I have experienced an early case of the post-grad blues, attempting to wrap my head around the rapidly approaching transition into adulthood and the working world. Upon graduating, there are a number of stressors that take a toll on college seniors, the main one being: “What am I going to do next?” Being able to secure a job can be very difficult with trying to manage the stress of your last year, completing your classes, filling out job applications, acing job interviews, all while managing your social life and sanity. Entrylevel jobs are hard to find, and even harder to get. Getting a job requires knowing what skills you bring to the table, how you can benefit the company, great interview skills, and most importantly, confidence. In addition to job uncertainty, the idea of a complete 180 degree change in your daily routine can be nerve-racking. The working world is filled with early mornings, regimented lunch breaks, and busy commutes on crowded trains and streets, all in preparation to wake up the next day and do it all over again. Learning how to navigate this way of life, a stark contrast to the go-with-the-flow college days, can make all the difference in your post-grad progress.

maintaining your social circle Of course, you should look back on your four years of college as amazing memories, but also remember that you are only 22 years old. The best memories of your life are yet to come! Make an effort to frequently keep in touch with the people from college who have touched your life and made you a better person. However, leaving college is also an opportunity to cleanse yourself of that friend (or friends) who have not contributed to your happiness. You do not have to keep in touch with anyone you don’t want to.

getting your ultimate dream job Finding a job can be hard, but your dream job will NEVER be your first job. So, widen your horizons to something you may not be accustomed to and remain open-minded. A job you never expected may fall right into your lap. Be aggressive and persistent in the application/interview process. Send everyone you speak to an email thanking them for their time and discuss how much you enjoyed talking to them. Confidence is key here. Put out the best version of yourself and people will resonate with you. Once applying to a job you really want, look up recruiters within that company and email them asking to meet and discuss the position further and offer to tell them a little more about yourself and your application. Not getting the job you want doesn’t mean you won’t end up there someday! Everything in this world happens for a reason and you will end up exactly where you are supposed to.

coffee, food, work attire, and more! Caffeine is your friend, so be nice to her, and look up some new coffee/tea recipes to get excited about before starting work! Meal prep your lunches for the week every Sunday so you can stay on track and become the healthiest version of yourself. Look up some chic business casual attire for your new job! Zara, Aritzia, Spanx, Express, and SKIMS all have some really fashionable and affordable options! Treat yourself on the weekends, whether this means eating the dessert you have been craving, having the best time with your friends, staying in and having a movie night with your family, or shopping a little for some retail therapy, treating yourself after a tough week can make all the difference mentally. There are no set rules for this next stage of our lives. Although it can seem daunting, taking it one day at a time and working hard to reach your career goals can become one of the most rewarding times in your life. Stay calm, work hard, and transform yourself. The best memories of our lives are yet to come!

Plan to hang out, go for dinner, get drinks, go out, or even go sightseeing with people that make you happy and push you to be the best version of yourself. It’s 2022! there’s no room in your circle for people who don’t bring out the best in you. UGIRL 38

Hookups From Hell

Peppa Pig Penelope Per usual, I was watching a movie with this guy when we were hooking up. Since we bought it, the movie went straight back to TV programming after it was done. Of course, out of all shows, Peppa Pig comes on. To make it worse, the guy leaned into my ear and started repeating everything the characters were saying in a British accent. I think he even did the oink at one point.

High as a Kite Haley I was hooking up with this guy and everything was going smoothly at first. Mid-screw, he falls right asleep. Of course, the first thing that came to mind was how bad I was at sex. The next day, I come to find out that he was just utterly stoned the whole time. Love that!

Lost and Found Lucy Earlier in the year, I was getting with this super cute athlete. While he wasn’t the brightest, he was definitely worth the trek to South Campus. However, one time after we hooked up, he casually mentioned he “couldn’t find the condom.” We think nothing of it and I go home. Three days later, as I go to pee, something didn’t feel right, and the said condom comes out of me. One of the most uncomfortable (and humbling) moments of my college hookup career.

Sleepaway Camp Sally At summer camp, I was hooking up with my boyfriend at the time. Obviously, we would have to sneak around to do anything other than hold hands or share a side hug. One time, while we were in a what-we-thought was locked closet, my counselor opened the door and caught us fully in the act. I was absolutely mortified!

College Bride Cathy On spring break senior year, I met a guy while my friends and I were out. Long story short, we hooked up. Afterwards, when we were laying next to each other, he told me he’s absolutely in love with me, and proceeded to pull out his phone and ask my opinion on literal engagement rings. Somewhere between adding his last name to my first and mentioning how much his parents would love me, I found my way out of that bed before I became a 22-year-old fiancee...
