Het thema van dit nummer, environmental sustainability, loopt begrijpelijkerwijs het gevaar in het hokje met loze termen gestopt te worden.

Begrijpelijkerwijs, omdat het op het eerste gezicht een vaag, abstract begrip lijkt. Diegene die het gedachte-experiment aandurft, komt er echter achter dat het juist concreet, zelfs praktisch bedoeld is. Dat de aarde kampt met een milieuprobleem hoeft anno 2012 nauwelijks vermeld te worden. Hoe we dat moeten afwenden, daar zit hem de crux van het verhaal. Volgens de redactie van Origin moeten we samenwerken. Sustainable energy for all, het thema van de Verenigde Naties, gaat niet alleen om hoe we in het Westen omgaan met het energieprobleem, maar juist hoe ontwikkelingslanden ook gebruik kunnen maken van goede energiebronnen en toegepaste technieken.

Dat dit hele simpele, doe-het-zelf applicaties moeten zijn, wordt uitgewerkt in de special “DIY: Developing World edition”.

Terug in Leiden wordt er stevig nagedacht over andere oplossingen voor het klimaatprobleem, bijvoorbeeld door professor Kramer van het Centrum voor Milieuwetenschappen Leiden.

Gelukkig had de professor nog wel tijd om onder het genot van een lunch de voortgang van de wereld te bespreken. De Culinaire Chemie van deze editie zit doorspekt met de goede boodschap dat we het probleem wel kunnen oplossen, als we maar nú beginnen! Of groene energie daar een bijdrage aan kan leveren, is echter de vraag die wordt beantwoord in de Betavraagbaak: “Hoe groen is groene energie?”. Kan groen nog groener?

Decaan faculteit Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen keert dit najaar terug naar onderwijs en onderzoek Prof. dr. Sjoerd Verduyn Lunel treedt per 1 september 2012 terug als decaan van de faculteit der Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen. Verduyn Lunel wordt weer hoogleraar wiskunde en zal zich volledig richten op onderwijs en onderzoek.

Verduyn Lunel is sinds 2007 decaan van de faculteit Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen en sinds 2010 voorzitter van de landelijke bètadecanen. Hij voelt een grote verantwoordelijkheid voor de faculteit en universiteit en heeft de afgelopen jaren met genoegen samengewerkt met het team van wetenschappelijk directeuren, collega-decanen en collegeleden. Verduyn Lunel laat weten dat hoezeer hij ook gehecht is geraakt aan zijn werk als decaan, hij de wiskunde

niet kan loslaten en besloten heeft terug te keren naar het onderwijs en onderzoek. “De faculteit staat er goed voor. Er is een nieuwe breed gedragen facultaire strategie `Science in Concert Accelerando 2011-2015’ en de portfoliodiscussie die in volle gang is zal voor de zomer afgerond worden.

Leidse Universitaire Scriptieprijs 2010-2011 voor Sarah Herms De Leidse Universitaire Scriptieprijs kent dit jaar twee winnaars. Dankzij het Comité Minerva 1957 en 1961 won zowel een scriptie in de categorie bètawetenschappen als in de categorie alpha- en gammawetenschappen. In de categorie bètawetenschappen won Sarah Herms met een interdisciplinair onderzoek naar de mogelijkheden om bedrijven duurzamer te laten werken.

In haar scriptie behandelt Sarah twee rekenmodellen, die zij vervolgens verenigt in een nieuw model. Een theoretische innovatie, die echter ook praktisch toepasbaar en nuttig bleek te zijn. Herms studeerde cum laude af bij de Master Industriële Ecologie, een samenwerkingsverband tussen de TU Delft en de Universiteit Leiden. Herms bedankte haar scriptiebegeleiders en zei in een reactie op de prijs: “Ik was al blij dat mijn scriptie genomineerd was, maar dit is natuurlijk fantastisch.”

Bottle of Light

I

n the slums of Manila, a new and innovative project is helping people to brighten up their homes.

In this project, plastic bottles are used to provide a way for sunlight to enter the dark rooms. The technology is as simple as could be, but double as effective.

The plastic bottles are inserted in little holes in the roof where they act as light bulbs, refracting and spreading sunlight, illuminating the room beneath.

The bottles are filled with distilled water, a little bleach added to prevent algae from growing. The power of this invention becomes apparent when the sunlight enters the bottle. Unlike a hole, in which the light will travel in a straight line, the water will refract it to go in all directions. The result: a bright room almost ten months of the year. One bottle emits as much as 55 to 60 watts of clear light.

Behind the project is Illac Diaz. The initiative known as ‘A liter of light’, aims to bring as much sustainable energy as possible to poor communities. The idea was originally developed by students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Already more than 10.000 bottles have been installed in developing country homes. One bottle emits clear light for five years. This is a significant improvement for many poor communities.

Who is Illac Diaz?

Illac Diaz earned a master’s degree in social entrepreneurship at the Asian Institute of Management. Other ideas developed by Diaz are the ‘Peanut Revolution’, a pedal powered machine to help women manually shelling peanuts, and ‘First Step Coral’, an artificial coral reef system, which attracts fish stock to shallower waters and hastens the growth of the shellfish. These shellfish are an important source of nutrition for coastal communities in the Philippines.

Windbelt

T

he ‘Windbelt’ is another device that has a great potential for improving welfare in developing countries. Its creator, Shawn Frayne, saw the need for small scale wind energy to power LED lamps and other small electronics in homes within poor communities.

Existing wind turbines often cannot be scaled down to the micro level; there is too much friction in the gearbox and in other components to make it small enough.

Frayne: ‘With rotary power, there’s nothing out there that generates under 50 watts.’ So Frayne took another path. He started studying the way vibrations caused by the wind led to the collapse of the Washington’s TacomaNarrowsBridge in 1940.

From his observations, Frayne developed his device, which he calls the ‘Windbelt’. The ‘Windbelt’ is a rubber band equipped with a pair of magnets that oscillate between metal coils. With enough wind, the rubber band starts to vibrate. His prototypes have generated 40 miliwatts in 10 mph windspeed. This output makes his device about twenty times more efficient than the top micro turbines.

Frayne envisions the ‘Windbelt’ costing little, about three dollars, and replacing kerosene lamps in Haitian homes. The use of kerosene is dangerous, because it is smoky and a fire hazard. The best thing about his invention, according to Frayne: ‘If my device breaks, locals can fix it themselves. If a solar panel breaks, the family is out a panel.’

Frayn intends to help fund the distribution of his ‘Windbelt’ in developing countries from Western applications. An example of such a Western application, is the powering of the electronics used in buildings to measure temperature, wind, and humidity levels.

Who is Shawn Frayne?

As president of Humdinger Wind Energy, Shawn Frayne is pushing forward the development of the Windbelt technology. Don't let the fact that he is 'only' a Bachelor of Science in Physics from MIT fool you: he owns a number of US and international patents, all focused on clean energy, green packaging and water disinfection. His philosophy: simple ingenuity and accessible solutions.

W

ater supply is a tricky commodity.

Needless to say, things will go wrong when the distinction between drinking water and wastewater is unclear, but even without our own pollution, many seemingly clean sources harbour diseases and parasites. As a result, waterborne disease is a leading cause of death, especially for children in developing countries. These countries often lack the means and expertise to build and maintain central water purification plants. Thus, communities need a mean to acquire their own potable water.

One construction that can fulfil a role in this sprung from the mind of Dean Kamen, the man who brought us Segway. His solution, the ‘Slingshot’, may look like a mini fridge, but according to its creator, it should be able to turn ‘anything that looks wet’ into drinking water. So far, prototypes have been able to process saline ocean water, raw sewage and, during a public demonstration on the popular TV-show ‘Colbert Report’, Kamen’s own urine into pristine water. It accomplishes all this by vaporization and subsequent distillation of the water, without clogging filters or costly chemicals.

Also, its production rate is impressive, purifying up to a thousand litres per day.

Two disadvantages still hamper the ‘Slingshot’: without support from charitable organisations, its price tag of 1,500 Euros makes it unaffordable for the peop-

le who will need it the most and it requires energy to vaporize the water. The energy problem may be fixed in several ways, depending on the location of use; the ‘Slingshot’ can be plugged into a socket, a diesel engine or Kamen’s custom sterling engine, which can burn almost anything.

Who is Dean Kamen?

Most people know him as the mind behind the Segway Personal Transporter, but Kamen has done more. His company, DEKA, holds the patents of many inventions, including portable dialysis machines, sterling engine designs and various prosthetics. He is also the founder of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an organisation that seeks to enthuse students for engineering.

Concrete Canvas Shelter

O

n the 12th of January 2010, the world watched as hundred thousands of Haitians fought for their lives under the crumbled remains of Port-au-Prince and surrounding villages after a catastrophic earthquake had hit the area. Many governments dispatched emergency teams and fundraisers collected billions of Euros to rebuild Haiti’s capital. As many were rendered homeless, tent encampments were built as a temporal solution. Sadly, the definition of ‘temporal solution’ is stretched in situations like these; in January of this year, Oxfam reported that five hundred thousand people still live in these tents, virtually unprotected and without the slightest bit of privacy.

The Britain based company Concrete Canvas could provide a smart alternative for these situations; sturdy shelters, just add water.

The ‘Concrete Canvas Shelter’ comes in a complete DIY package. Two inexperienced people can deploy the 25 m2 model in two hours, in two steps: inflate a balloon covered with cement impregnated canvas, then wet the canvas (even sea water will work) and wait 24 hours for the ‘Concrete Canvas’ to dry and harden. The resulting construction resists wind, water, fire and pressure.

Cover it with sand to arm it against small firearms and grenade shrapnel, bury it for extra heat capacity or order a sterile one for emergency surgical units. It is expected to last for over a decade, which should be plenty of time to give at least some of its inhabitants a permanent home. Costing about 1,500 Euros, the ‘Concrete Canvas Shelter’ may be slightly more expensive than four sticks and a sheet, but in many cases it should be worth the extra effort.

This is because the creators and engineers are creating technologies for cultures of which they have little or no knowledge. This cultural barrier has often posed a problem in developmental aid. Ignorance of daily life and values in developing countries can pose difficulty to estimate how people might use an invention, or even whether the particular invention is necessary at all.

Independency from Western countries should remain the aim of both parties. Hoe groen is groene energie? door: Anja Rienitz, Marit van Santen, Mark Weijers

Is de groene stroom die wij gebruiken inderdaad milieuvriendelijk geproduceerd? Betaalt de investering in het opwekken van groene energie zich op deze manier terug of kan groene energie nog groener? Deze vragen heeft Origin aan het denken gezet en de redactie heeft zijn leden erop uitgestuurd om drie alternatieve energiebronnen onder de loep te nemen.

brandstoffen worden gefossiliseerde plantenresten verbrand waardoor CO2 , opgeslagen buiten de CO2-cyclus, vervolgens wel terecht komt in de CO2-cyclus met als gevolg een verhoging van de totale CO2-concentratie in de atmosfeer. In tegenstelling tot gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen wordt bij gebruik van biomassa de netto concentratie CO2 in de atmosfeer niet verhoogd.

De energiemarkt staat binnenkort op het punt om groene energie als concurrent voor grijze energie serieus te moeten nemen. Politici en wetenschappers weten al lang dat dit de toekomst is, grote bedrijven gebruiken het als marketing tool. Het Europees Parlement heeft besloten dat het gebruik van duurzame energie enorm opgeschroefd moet worden. In 2020 moet 20% van de verbruikte energie in de Europese Unie afkomstig zijn van natuurlijke hulpbronnen. Als blijkt dat deze energie meer afval produceert of energie kost, dan zou dit natuurlijk zinloos zijn. We bekijken drie markten die zichzelf nog moeten bewijzen als concurrent van de huidige markt: biomassa (met als bekenste vorm biobrandstof), windenergie en zonne-energie.

In 2005 werd 4,22% van het elektriciteitsverbruik in Nederland opgewekt uit biomassa. Als dit deel uit fossiele brandstoffen was opgewekt, zou er 4.434 miljoen kilo meer CO2 in de lucht zijn gekomen. Dat is 2,53% van de totale kooldioxide-uitstoot in dat jaar 1. Met het oog op klimaatverandering en het versterkte broeikaseffect wordt de vraag naar groene energie, waaronder biobrandstoffen, steeds groter.

Met de toenemende populariteit neemt ook de scepsis toe en staat de duurzaamheid van biomassa alsnog ter discussie. De inzet van biobrandstoffen voor de reductie van CO2-uitstoot blijkt niet altijd even effectief te zijn. De voorbewerking en het restafval beïnvloeden de energiekosten en milieuvriendelijkheid van het proces.

Wanneer rioolslib of mest wordt gebruikt voor biomassaverwerking, komen er schadelijke stoffen als broeikasgassen (methaan, fluorgas) of zware metalen (zwaveloxide) vrij. Om plek te creëren voor het verbouwen van biomassa worden zelfs massaal tropische regenwouden gekapt, met als gevolg een verlies in biodiversiteit en een instabiel ecosysteem.

Zonne-energie ontwikkelt zich drastisch. Er is een scala aan hulpmiddelen ontwikkeld voor het overdragen van zonlicht in bruikbare energie welke een uitbarsting van technologische vooruitgang ondergaan. Of het nu gaat om een hele woonwijk met energie voorzien of alleen om het verwarmen van uw huis - hun potentieel is enorm.

waterd en wordt het oerwoud gekapt. Daarbij komen zoveel broeikasgassen vrij dat je zeshonderd jaar biodiesel moet gaan gebruiken om dat te compenseren2.

Indonesië kapt jaarlijks 1,87 miljoen hectare, een gebied bijna zo groot als de helft van Nederland. Desondanks wil de regering de productie van palmolie in tien jaar verdubbelen, dit terwijl Indonesië al 75% van haar bossen verloren heeft3. Daarnaast brengt de kap ook nietverwaarloosbare sociaaleconomische effecten met zich mee, die te maken hebben met aantasting van de voedselproductie in het land van herkomst. Denk hierbij aan het wegconcurreren van lokale kleinschalige landbouw wat stijging van de voedselprijzen met zich meebrengt.

Onder andere Milieudefensie vindt daarom dat we in Nederland geen palmolie als biomassa moeten gebruiken: ‘Het mag niet zo zijn dat aan de andere kant van de wereld regenwoud wordt gekapt zodat wij onze Kyotodoelstellingen kunnen halen en ongestoord in onze (biodiesel)auto's door kunnen blijven rijden’ 4.

Weigeren een bepaald soort biomassa te gebruiken is nog maar het begin van de vele stappen die gezet moeten worden om biomassa een stuk groener te maken. Er moeten duurzaamheidcriteria worden opgesteld waarbij er onder andere rekening gehouden moet worden met het ecosysteem, voedselproductie en de import.

Ook moet de hoeveelheid CO2-uitstoot door winning, bewerking en transport van de biomassa in acht genomen worden. Goede criteria die de duurzaamheid van het gebruik van biomassa garanderen zijn de oplossing om groene energie nog groener te maken.

het grootste deel van het jaar straalt. Zonne-energie heeft in de landen rond de equator daarom grote potentie. Vooral Spanje, China en het zuiden van de VS lijken de bron van zonne-energie te willen benutten.

Alle drie hebben deze landen iets minder dan een derde in handen van de totale 25.17 gigawatts die er op het moment ongeveer per jaar uit de zon worden gehaald5.

Deze energie wordt gewonnen uit zowel zonnecellen als thermale zonne-energie, hoewel zonnecellen het grootste deel van de markt bezitten.

Hoewel er zonnecentrales in de planning staan, is het misschien handig om nog eens te kijken naar de kosten van productie, onderhoud en recycling van de gebruikte materialen. De productie van zonnecellen bestaat uit ruwweg vier componenten; de semiconductor van een gekristalliseerd silica mengsel, de geleider van metaal, een beschermende laag van silica en de module die om de cel heen zit. De productie van de semiconductor vergt het meeste energie, gebaseerd op de kosten6. De polysilica die hiervoor gebruikt wordt moet zeer puur zijn en nauwgezet gesliced worden in dunne plakken, wafers. Dit snijden is weliswaar de grootste kostenpost, maar dit proces is niet ‘duur’ qua energiegebruik. De helft van het substraat wordt echter tot stof gemaakt, waardoor dit één van de grootste mogelijkheden is tot verbetering. Het maken van het substraat, polysilicon, is namelijk wel een energieslurper en is verantwoordelijk voor twee derde van de energiekosten! De vraag is of deze energiekosten ooit nog worden terugverdiend.

In totaal wordt de hoeveelheid energie geschat op 1494 MJ/panel. De terugbetaling van deze energie tot een energie neutraal proces kost in Nederland ruwweg 5,5 jaar, maar daarmee zitten we aan de bovenrand.

De toekomst? Off shore windparken zouden binnenkort bij het beeld van onze Noordzee kunnen horen. Of kost het teveel: het welzijn van de waddenzee en haar bewoners.

4 jaar. Er wordt zelfs verwacht dat deze terugbetaling wordt opgeschort tot 1 Ă 2 jaar in 2020.

Met energiekosten is overigens nog niets gezegd over geld. In vergelijking met kool als grootste concurrent blijft zonne-energie twee keer zo duur. Investeringen zijn hierdoor niet rendabel, want concurreren met de huidige markt blijft in de meeste gebieden niet mogelijk.

Een zonnepaneel gaat ongeveer twintig tot dertig jaar mee. Twintig jaar energie lijkt lang, maar zoals met meer processen in de historie, is het toch verstandig om te kijken naar het afval dat zoiets genereert. 100% van de fabrikanten is voorstander van recycling, terwijl maar 20% bereid is het te gaan doen7. De fotocellen van een zonnepaneel hebben fragmenten zware metalen als lood en cadmium die licht absorberen. Deze cellen verpulveren en uitspreiden gaat hierom niet. Er wordt gekeken naar de mogelijkheden om het silicon (immers verantwoordelijk voor tweederde van de benodigde energie) her te gebruiken. Hoewel bedrijven het zien als een last, zijn ze wel bezig met afvalverwerkingsprogramma’s. Grootschalig verbruikte zonnepanelen verwerken is op het moment nog niet rendabel, waardoor weggooien nu nog het meest gedaan wordt.

Windenergie Er bestaan veel oordelen over windenergie, zowel positieve als negatieve, juiste als onjuiste. Al decennia wordt de effectiviteit van windmolens onderzocht en wordt erover gespeculeerd. De meest vertrouwde voordelen zijn de vermindering van het gebruik van fossiele brandstoffen en daarmee de vermindering van de CO2uitstoot, de duurzaamheid van windenergie en de dalende afhankelijkheid van olieproducerende landen.

Tegenover deze voordelen staan nadelen zoals de kosten van productie, bouw, onderhoud en het transport van opgewekte energie. De productie van de molens vereist staal en kunststof, dat ook weer in een kostbaar en vervuilend proces gewonnen moeten worden.

Verder valt de windsnelheid moeilijk in te schatten.

Natuurbeschermers beweren dat vogels verstoord raken door de molens en dat ze erin gezogen kunnen worden. Vleermuizen zouden last van de drukverschillen hebben.

Over de afgelopen 10 jaar hebben wetenschappers en natuurbeschermers methodes ontwikkeld, waarbij kosten gedaald zijn, de tijd om energie terug te winnen verkort is en vleermuizen en vogels er minder last van hebben.

Interessant is dat er nu vooral in het noorden van Nederland en Duitsland meer off-shore windparken gebouwd gaan worden. De windparken zijn gepland in de Noordzee, en wat ligt er tussen het vaste land en de Noordzee? De gevoelige en beschermde Waddenzee. De energie die offshore geproduceerd gaat worden moet wel aan land gebracht worden en hiervoor moet men langs het wad. Voor het eerst staan twee partijen met een goede bedoeling voor mens en milieu tegenover elkaar. Het Wereld Natuur Fonds heeft een grote interesse om energie duurzamer te produceren en dit ondersteunt de verandering in de energie-industrie die in Nederland en Duitsland nu plaatsvindt, maar tegelijkertijd brengt die ontwikkeling ook problemen met zich mee. De afgravingen en het bouwen van de molens zouden direct effect hebben op het ecosysteem in de Noordzee. De Noordzee is bekend als dĂŠ opvoedingsplaats voor bijna alle vissoorten in het gebied, omdat er veel voedsel valt te vinden en er weinig roofdieren zijn. grypus) gespot – een teken dat het goed gaat met de Noordzee, want deze beesten waren in de regio door jacht bijna uitgestoven. Ook de aanwezigheid van de gewone bruinvis (Phocoena phocoena) – een kleine en geluidgevoelige walsoort – geeft aan dat het goed gaat met onze Noordzee.

Door het bouwen van de windmolens ontstaat veel lawaai en er zijn al aanwijzingen dat de gewone bruinvis zich hierom uit het gebied terugtrekt. Dat de geluidsoverlast een negatief effect op andere organismen heeft lijkt natuurbeschermers duidelijk.

Als de mensen die de bouw van de off-shorewindparken gaan realiseren het voor het zeggen zouden hebben, zou er van ieder park een grote kabel door het wad naar het vaste land worden gelegd. Omdat de kabels onder de aarde gelegd moeten worden, zouden er dus graafmachines op en neer de Waddenzee moeten gaan om deze kabels te begraven. En niet alleen dit; doordat de Waddenzee een dynamisch systeem is, zouden de kabels ook regelmatig weer tevoorschijn komen.

In het voorjaar 2012 gaat de bouw beginnen. Gelukkig zijn natuurbeschermers en de grote bedrijven het ten minste eens over de plaats van de kabels; ze mogen alleen in bepaalde gebieden begraven worden, in ieder geval niet in beschermde zones en ze gaan gebundeld worden.

Traditionele energiebronnen en hun negatieve effect op mens en milieu - maar zijn alternatieve energiebronnen wel "groener"?

vrijwel constant blijven. Het plannen, ontwerpen, produceren, onderhouden en recyclen van componenten en energiecentrales creëert ook arbeidsplaatsen op een stabiele markt.

Problemen met de opslag van energie tijdens daluren en het vervoeren van energie over grote gebieden zijn obstakels waar elk van deze energiebronnen in zekere mate mee te maken heeft. Ook is deze energie nog geen vervanger van benzine, de bron van 33% van onze CO2 uitstoot10. Ondanks dit laten de huidige processen zien dat de ontwikkelingen zeker minder uitstoot geven en een grote stap nemen richting een werkelijk duurzame energievoorziening. Maar als in 2020 20% van de verbruikte energie in de Europese Unie afkomstig moet zijn van natuurlijke hulpbronnen, moet er nog het één ander gebeuren voordat deze groene energie zijn naam volledig waar maakt.

“I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”

Het is het bekendste citaat van Thomas Edison, de uitvinder van de gloeilamp. Het is de vraag of hij zelf heeft beseft wat voor enorme impact zijn uitvinding zou hebben op de wereld. De geboorte van het kunstmatig licht kan gezien worden als een mijlpaal in de opkomst van de nieuwe, elektrische tijd. Na ruim 130 jaar levert dit nog steeds spectaculaire plaatjes op, zoals deze foto van Europa bij nacht, genomen vanuit het ISS. De grote steden lichten schitterend op in het slapende landschap.

Net zo onlosmakelijk verbonden met de gloeilamp is echter het lage rendement en de daaruit voortvloeiende energieverspilling. De zoektocht naar kunstmatig licht met zo min mogelijk impact op het milieu is begonnen. Het gebruik van spaarlampen wordt gestimuleerd, de LED-techniek verovert de wereld. Het toppunt wellicht is het verbod op verkoop van de originele gloeilamp in de Europese Unie, dat in september dit jaar ingaat. Zou Edison zich omdraaien in zijn graf? Ik vermoed van niet, zijn uitvinding sneuvelt in het naleven van zijn gedachtegang. De belasting van het milieu dwingt ons naar milieuvriendelijke technieken te zoeken. De gloeilamp was één van de tienduizend technieken die, helaas, niet goed genoeg werkten. Het is daarmee geen mislukte uitvinding!

Culinaire chemie met

professor Gert Jan Kramer Wie aan duurzame ontwikkeling denkt, denkt misschien eerder aan de TU Delft dan aan de Universiteit Leiden. Toch wordt ook in Leiden aan dit onderwerp veel aandacht besteed. In het Centrum voor Milieuwetenschappen Leiden (CML) komen experts uit een grote diversiteit aan vakgebieden bijeen om oplossingen te vinden voor de huidige milieuproblematiek. Onder hen bevindt zich professor Gert Jan Kramer, als deeltijdhoogleraar Sustainable Energy verbonden aan de Universiteit Leiden. Vanwege de lange reistijd tot zijn woonplaats Wageningen en de superieure kooktechniek van zijn vrouw kookt hij zelden. Daarom biedt hij Origin een “free lunch” aan bij restaurant Koetjes en Kalfjes in Oegstgeest.

Professor Kramer komt op de fiets naar het restaurant. Misschien wel te verwachten van iemand die zich bezighoudt met het ontwikkelingsproces van nieuwe energiebronnen. Met een glimlach schuift hij aan bij Origin. In zijn uitnodiging stelde de professor voor om de duurzaamheid van het menu te bediscussiëren aan de hand van de boeken How Bad Are Banana’s? – The Carbon Footprint of Everything door Mike Berners-Lee en The Omnivore’s Dillema – A Natural History of Four Meals door Michael Pollan (meer informatie over deze boeken vind je verderop in dit artikel).

De prijs van de lunch Unaniem wordt gekozen voor bruin brood met warme geitenkaas. De professor merkt lachend op dat we, in het kader van duurzaamheid, de carpaccio gelukkig vermeden hebben en wijst ons gelijk op de gevolgen van de bio-industrie. “Ik weet niet of jullie een tijdje terug de reclame hebben gezien van Stichting Wakker Dier waarin de evolutie van de kip wordt uitgebeeld.

Dat trok echt mijn aandacht. Zo zag je de kip van 150 miljoen jaar geleden, 65 miljoen jaar geleden en de oergedomesticeerde kip van 3000 jaar voor onze jaartelling. Dan de kip van 1950, die al een beetje aan het industrialiseren was. Die zag er nog groot, sterk en gezond uit, zoals een Barnevelder kip. Het eindigde met de Gallus kiloknallus, die zag er heel zielig uit.

Een soort van kipfilet op poten met wat schrale veertjes. Zo'n beest komt in zes weken op het slachtgewicht, terwijl de normale kip dat vroeger in zes maanden deed.” Professor Kramer legt uit dat een kip zo enorm efficiënt is in het converteren van plantaardig materiaal in voedingsstoffen dat het één derde van de calorieën die het binnenkrijgt, omzet in vlees. Dat doen de koeien de kippen niet snel na. Hiermee legt de professor een link naar de problematiek van wereldvraagstukken en duurzaamheid. “Als mensen rijker worden, willen ze een ‘rijker’ dieet volgen wat meestal betekent dat ze meer vlees gaan eten. Het beslag dat daarmee samenhangt, zowel de fysieke ruimte als de milieuruimte, is enorm en mensen beseffen dat vaak niet. Dat is ook eigenlijk mijn punt van ‘free lunch’, of eigenlijk there is no such thing as a free lunch.”

Wat schaft de pot in Huize Kramer?

Intussen zijn de luxe broodjes geitenkaas geserveerd. We laten ons de lunch goed smaken. Ook de professor spreekt zijn goedkeuring uit over het eten.

Nieuwsgierig naar de kookkunsten van zijn vrouw, vragen we de professor naar de eetgewoontes thuis.

“Omdat ik zo lang reis, is het koken geleidelijk aan geheel naar mijn vrouw overgegaan. Zij kan dat ook veel beter. Ik denk dat we bij ons thuis matig zijn in ons vleesgebruik. En ik denk ook dat we alles redelijkerwijs met zo veel mogelijk pure ingrediënten koken, dus niet alles uit een pakje uit de supermarkt.”

Doordeweeks zijn er een aantal vaste recepten bij de familie Kramer. Het belangrijkste is dat de kinderen van 8 en 10 jaar het eten lusten. “De favoriet is de zelfgemaakte pizza die we één keer in de week eten. Iedereen mag zijn eigen kwart van de pizza beleggen. Voor de jongste is het summum van de pizza nog altijd de pizza margherita en de oudste, die inmiddels wat gevarieerder eet, laat zelfs mozzarella en paprika toe, maar dat is het dan wel zo ongeveer.” Verder heeft de familie Kramer de gewoonte om één keer per week zelfgemaakte tomatensoep te eten. “Soms experimenteren we met zelfgemaakte pompoensoep, maar vooralsnog leidt dat tot commentaar van de kinderen, omdat dat toch beduidend minder lekker is dan tomatensoep.” Benieuwd lees verder > Origin - Universiteit Leiden

naar het recept van de pompoensoep vragen we de professor hoe het klaargemaakt wordt. Lachend antwoordt hij: “Door het recept te volgen! Ik weet dat er in de laatste pompoensoep waar we mee geëxperimenteerd hebben, pompoen, aardappel en tomaat zat.”

200 km per dag forenzen Vier dagen in de week werkt professor Kramer bij Shell Global Solutions in Amsterdam. Eén dag per week is hij in Leiden werkzaam op de afdeling Industrial Ecology, onderdeel van het CML van de Universiteit Leiden. Toch woont de professor met zijn gezin in Wageningen. Deze keuze ligt niet voor de hand. “Voordat we in Wageningen naar huizen gingen kijken was ik er ongeveer twee keer in mijn leven geweest. Mijn vrouw heeft er wel haar wortels, want zij heeft daar levensmiddelentechnologie gestudeerd.” Een paar jaar geleden werkte de vrouw van de professor nog bij Shell in Den Haag. Toen ze daar wegging, is ze octrooigemachtigde in Ede geworden.

Het was een goede carrièremogelijkheid voor haar en het leek leuk voor het gezin om de Randstad te verlaten. Nu werkt zij op fietsafstand, terwijl de professor 100 km moet reizen. Deze afstand legt hij dagelijks af met de trein en de fiets en hij is van deur tot deur een kleine twee uur onderweg. Deze ochtend was een uitzondering: “Toevallig moest ik vanochtend met de auto naar de trein, omdat ik een lekke band had.”

Dat voor de trein is gekozen als vervoermiddel, en niet voor de auto, komt niet geheel voort uit milieubelangen. “Als ik diep bij mezelf te rade ga is dat minstens even zeer gedreven doordat ik het een veel prettigere manier van reizen vindt. Dat maakt het ‘doenbaar’.

Mijn beweging krijg ik door van en naar het station te fietsen, de tijd in de trein kan ik vervolgens nuttig besteden. Dus of de keuze nu alleen gedreven is doordat het beter is voor het milieu? Het is altijd makkelijk om dat aan te halen, maar als ik eerlijk ben is dat niet zo. Het is voor mensen moeilijk helder te hebben hoe groot nu de milieubelasting is van de dingen die ze doen en eten. En zelfs als ze het wel weten, dan nog is het best lastig, vind ik, ernaar te handelen.”

Ondanks zijn uitmuntende prestaties aan de universiteit koos professor Kramer voor een carrière in het bedrijfsleven bij Shell. “Een belangrijke reden hiervoor was dat Shell de traditie heeft de toppresteerders onder de studenten te selecteren. Ik had al het idee om na mijn afstuderen onderzoek te gaan doen in het bedrijfsleven. Door mijn achtergrond in de vaste stof fysica lag het voor de hand bij Philips te gaan werken, maar door tegenvallende winstcijfers was daar destijds geen plaats. Joan van der Waals, erg belangrijk bij de laatste periode van mijn promotie, had connecties bij Shell. In mijn laatste jaar organiseerde hij een bijeenkomst om promovendi bij dit bedrijf te introduceren. Het toeval wil dat dezelfde Joan van der Waals me, al zwaaiend met het proefschrift van zijn oom Johan, ook al had overgehaald in Leiden te gaan studeren.”

Op de opmerking dat de professor best milieubewust leeft, antwoordt hij lachend: “Dat zal mijn vrouw tegenspreken. Die zegt dat ik me er alleen in abstracto

katalyseprocessen. “Het was een periode waarin Shell behoefte had aan een dieper niveau van kennis. Het onderzoek was in wetenschappelijk zin dan ook geweldig. Samen met Rutger van Santen heb ik twee keer een artikel in Nature kunnen publiceren. We hebben fantastisch onderzoek gedaan, maar na zo’n zeven, acht jaar werd het teruggeschaald. Het bleek toch moeilijk hard te maken dat Shell door ons onderzoek een betere katalysator zou kunnen maken.”

De professor belandde op een punt in zijn carrière dat hij moest kiezen. “Wil ik wetenschappelijk blijven en ga ik proberen aan de universiteit een baan te vinden? Of ga ik door binnen Shell? Waar ik dan beter wat praktischer werk kan gaan doen.” Hij kiest bewust voor het bedrijfsleven, omdat hij de dynamiek ervan aantrekkelijk vindt.

“Je kunt er makkelijker dan aan de universiteit van onderzoeksgebied wisselen, Shell is daar in ieder geval heel open in.”

Dan is het logisch om te kijken naar de mogelijkheid om je natuurlijke bron zowel op de olie- als op de gasmarkt te gelde te maken. Door het gas om te zetten naar olie voegt Shell economische waarde toe aan de grondstof en is de marktafhankelijkheid van Qatars export gereduceerd.”

De vraag of er niet veel energie verloren gaat wanneer het gas gedeeltelijk verbrand wordt, moet de professor met enige voorzichtigheid beantwoorden. “Als je een gas naar vloeibare brandstof omzet gooi je onvermijdelijk calorische waarde weg, maar dat doe je ook bij transport van het gas. Pijpleidingen hebben maar een beperkt bereik, dus moet gas voor transport over grote afstanden vloeibaar gemaakt worden. Energetisch is dat beter dan omzetten naar olie. Vloeibare brandstof is echter op calorische basis waardevoller dan gas en dat levert de economische drijfveer voor het proces. Een bijkomend voordeel voor het milieu is dat de diesel die geproduceerd wordt van een betere kwaliteit is dan gewone diesel.

Zo rijden de stadsbussen in diverse wereldsteden op deze diesel om smogvorming te verminderen.”

‘Wil ik wetenschappelijk blijven en ga ik proberen aan de universiteit een baan te vinden? Of ga ik door binnen Shell?’

Wetenschappelijk onderzoek Hij komt terecht in onderzoek naar ‘trickle flow’ reactoren, de meest gebruikte reactoren in raffinaderijen.

Gas en vloeistof worden daarin over een vaste katalysator geleid. “De vraag was hoe de vloeistof het best over de gehele installatie verdeeld kon worden en onder welke condities de verdeling stabiel bleef. Dat was voor mij een tijdlang interessante problematiek, maar ik merkte uiteindelijk dat ik toch meer fundamenteel wetenschappelijke interesses had. Ik vond het werk een beetje te praktisch”, vertelt de professor lachend.

“Ik heb toen gevraagd of ik terug kon naar de ‘echte’ wetenschap, de katalyse. Dat werd de katalyse van synthesegasprocessen. Ik keek zowel naar het productieproces van het gas als naar de toepassingen ervan.”

Hij weidt uit: “Synthesegas bestaat uit koolstofmonoxide en waterstof en wordt gemaakt door een brandstof onvolledig te verbranden. Vervolgens kun je de gehele organische chemie eruit synthetiseren. Zo kan van aardgas bijvoorbeeld synthetische diesel gemaakt worden. Het proces is al in de jaren ’20 van de vorige eeuw ontdekt, maar pas recent commercieel gemaakt door Shell. Het bedrijf heeft een heel grote fabriek ge-

De professor heeft niet veel aanmoediging nodig tijdens het vertellen. Hij slaat heel wat zijpaden in, maar verdwaalt nooit en komt steeds weer terug bij de kern van zijn verhaal. “Via het synthesegas kwam ik eind jaren ‘90 terecht in het onderwerp van waterstofgas als transportbrandstof.”

In die periode waren autobedrijven ook al op zoek naar radicale vernieuwingen in de aandrijving.

Brandstofcellen die energie opwekken uit de elektrochemische omzetting van waterstof zouden de ideale motor van de toekomst zijn. Dit was echter paradoxaal: niemand koopt een waterstofauto als nergens waterstof te tanken is en niemand bouwt een tankstation als er geen waterstofauto’s zijn.

te ontwikkelen om aan boord van de auto benzine in waterstofgas om te zetten. Als door middel van die tussenstap de brandstofcel zou zijn geïntroduceerd kon later de benzine door waterstof vervangen worden. Om allerlei redenen, waarop ik hier niet verder in kan gaan, is men uiteindelijk van dit idee afgestapt.

Het lijkt er inmiddels op dat de eerste auto's op waterstof in 2015 commercieel geïntroduceerd gaan worden. ”

De behoefte na te denken over maatschappelijke vraagstukken blijkt bij navraag al lange tijd aanwezig.

“Toen ik een studie moest gaan kiezen ben ik natuurkunde gaan studeren, omdat ik wilde weten hoe de wereld in elkaar zat. Als middelbare scholier vertaalde ik dat naar hoe materie was opgebouwd en wat de fundamentele krachten waren die de wereld bewegen. Tijdens je studie raak je dat idee geleidelijk aan kwijt, maar ik ben wel altijd, in intellectuele zin, op zoek gebleven naar de diepere vragen. Nu merk ik dat ik op rijpere leeftijd dan toch zo’n diepere vraag gevonden heb. Hoe krijgt de wereld de energietransitie voor elkaar? Dat is in wezen waarmee ik me zowel bij Shell als hier in Leiden bezighoud.”

‘There is exactly enough time… starting now.’

Manager Energy Futures Dan arriveren we bij de huidige functie van de professor bij Shell, manager Energy Futures. “Ik zoek voor Shell naar activiteiten met een goed verhaal, in een wereld waarin men het klimaatprobleem serieus aanpakt en tot heel snelle CO2 reductie wil komen.

Het is verre van zeker dat we zo'n wereld gaan krijgen, helaas. Maar het is duidelijk dat Shell in dat geval op zoek moet naar andere groeimogelijkheden dan alleen in olie en gas. Die veranderingen voer je niet van de ene op de andere dag door, daar wil Shell op tijd mee beginnen. Het bedrijf heeft al twee keuzes gemaakt, te weten productie van biobrandstoffen en afvang en opslag van CO2 .”

Deeltijd-hoogleraar De professor helpt ons weer probleemloos naar het volgende onderwerp, zijn werk aan de universiteit.

Voortbouwend op zijn onderzoek naar katalyseprocessen bij Shell werd hij in 1998 deeltijdhoogleraar in de fundamentele aspecten van de heterogene katalyse aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. Toen zijn werk bij Shell zich later steeds meer concentreerde op waterstof, is hij aan de TU tot hoogleraar waterstoftechnologie benoemd. “Tot ik zo’n drie jaar geleden werd benaderd door mensen van het CML. Men was op zoek, en is nog altijd op zoek, naar een voltijdshoogleraar industriële ecologie. Nu is er een aantal deeltijders op de afdeling dat in relevante industrieën werkt, waarvan de energie-industrie er uiteraard één is.” Bij CML zitten mensen van allerlei academische pluimage die werken aan zeer maatschappelijke vragen. Professor Kramer probeert de methodes die anderen ontwikkelen te koppelen aan een zo praktisch mogelijke vraagstelling. Dat ziet hij in zijn algemeenheid als de rol van een deeltijdhoogleraar uit het bedrijfsleven: “Kijken wat je in een academische setting kunt doen met de vragen waarmee je in de praktijk van het bedrijf te maken hebt. Ik vond het een heel mooie kans. Bovendien moet ik zeggen dat het toch wel speciaal voelde terug te keren naar de Universiteit Leiden, mijn Alma Mater.”

De middag is inmiddels flink gevorderd, maar de professor maakt nog even tijd de toekomst van de mensheid met ons te bediscussiëren. Er blijken optimisten en pessimisten aan tafel te zitten. Zijn eigen mening

Wat eten we vandaag?

How Bad Are Bananas? is een vermakelijk boek dat vol met informatie zit. Aan de hand van een honderdtal voorbeelden uit het dagelijks leven wil de auteur de lezer een koolstofinstinct voor de ecologische voetafdruk geven over alles wat we doen, denken en kopen. Door de rangschikking van voorwerpen naar ordes van grootte, van alledaagse dingen zoals eten en boeken naar dingen op wereldschaal vergemakkelijkt hij de lezer om bewuste keuzes te maken die passen bij de eigen levensstijl.

Wat zullen we vanavond gaan eten? Die vraag houdt ons al bezig sinds de ontdekking van vuur, maar volgens Michael Pollan is het antwoord dat we vandaag op die vraag geven bepalend voor de overleving van de mensheid. Om antwoord te geven op de vraag volgt de auteur zijn maaltijd uit verschillende voedselketens van de bron tot op het bord. Het boek belooft de lezer de manier van denken en voelen over onze maaltijd te veranderen. Je eten zal nooit meer hetzelfde smaken.

As you could read in the previous Origin, it is important for scientists to communicate clearly with the general public. Of course, this is easier said than done. Therefore all Biology students follow a course on popular scientific writing during their first Bachelor year. In this course Rinny Kooi, Bas Haring and Willy van Strien teach students how to make articles more understandable and interesting for non-scientists. At the end of the course, an essay must be written. This year, there was an extra bonus for the best essay; it would be published in Origin. Many of the older generations know the provoking protest song: 'War' by Edwin Starr. The song criticized the Vietnam war and promoted peace. In the 1970s it was a number one hit and held this position for over three weeks. Its message was crystal clear: "War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing!" Many people agree with this statement and lethal conflicts on such a grand scale should unquestionably be avoided. Nevertheless, competition makes perfect sense to nature. Pathogens and plants for instance are involved in an incessant struggle for life. What does not kill them, makes them stronger. It sounds counterintuitive, but to nature 'warfare' might actually be beneficial.

Let us take into consideration the arms race between plants and pathogens in specific. The two organisms constantly adapt their weapon arsenal, comparable to The Cold War. Their battles may not be perceptible from our perspective. Nonetheless, there is more than meets the eye. The outcomes of these seemingly invisible battles affect us greatly. The Great Hunger of 1845 was the result of an epidemic among potatoes. The culprit of the carnage was the bacteria Phytophthora infestans which feasted on the abundant crop. It was as though almighty America had been nuclearly annihilated by the Soviet Union. At that time the Irish did not know what had devastated the potatoes. But now we know.

Whenever a plant is infected by a bacterium it immediately takes defensive measures. The defense can be divided into several stages. Recognition of the invader is the first. In many respects a plant is blind. It does not even notice a pathogen when it is several millimeters off. Only when the intruder makes physical contact does the plant react. This does not mean that your plant is scared into a defensive response when you touch it.

Special receptors on the surface of the plant can distinguish between hostile microorganisms and friendly caretakers. After the pathogen has been labeled and recognized as unwanted, the cell raises the alarm. All hands are summoned on deck. Quite literally, because during the second stage of defense various proteins are called to action. Most of them relay information to the cell's center where they stimulate specific protein production. The proteins produced are responsible for the actual defense. In this exhilarating stage both plant and pathogens fight for their survival. Cells strengthen their borders, close their pores and produce reactive substances to repel the enemy. On some occasions this might work, but pathogens are persistent.

Pathogens are not so easily defeated. Since it takes many proteins to relay the alert to a plant cell's center, it is practical to compromise one of the proteins in the chain. These pathogenic saboteurs in fact exist and are called effectors. They are responsible for the repression of the immune response. The plant's answer to the saboteurs is simple. It takes on new proteins to incapacitate the effectors. If there are too many effectors, the cell commits suicide. He takes one for the team.

The eventual arms race can be summarized as follows. Pathogens trigger the plant's immune response.

Effectors suppress that response. The plant is immune against effectors. New effectors suppress immunity and the cycle continues. Between each step natural selection works its charm. As a result, plants and pathogens evolve and new species might even come into existence.

We are thus left with the interesting paradox that war is necessary for life to diversify. Edwin Starr would have been amazed.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Dylan van Gerven and since the start of this academic year I study Biology at Leiden University. Tri Hita Karana: A Primer on the Balinese Philosophy of Life and the Balance of Nature As many visitors of the Island of Bali, impressed by its splendor, wonder how the local people manage to protect and maintain both their culture and nature, and survive the impact of the current process of globalization, the indigenous population themselves explain the sustained conservation of the rich bio-cultural diversity from their ‘Philosophy of the Balance of Nature’ Tri Hita Karana .

While many refer to this remarkable cosmology of the Balinese, little is known about its history, operation and actual meaning for the daily practice of rituals and ceremonies which seek to safeguard the island and its people against the negative influences from outside.

While Tri translates to three, Hita to well-being and Karana to causes, the concept symbolizes the three causes in achieving well being and prosperity for humanity. The most basic Balinese philosophy of life calls for humans to maintain throughout their life harmonious and balanced relations with the three components of the universe in which they take a central position in order to achieve spiritual and physical prosperity: the parahyangan (spiritual environment), pawongan (social environment) and palemahan (natural environment).

The Tri Hita Karana places humans in the center of the equilibrium and as the cause of all balances and imbalances. For humans to achieve the ultimate Balinese Hindu goal of Jagadhita (happiness and prosperity), they have to achieve and maintain the harmonious ba-

lance between and within the three environments of the cosmology. In daily life, this means that the Balinese have to adhere to the various doctrines and practices within each component conducive to a harmonious and balanced relationship.

In explaining this lifetime adherence to those three environments, Anthropologist Ide Bagus Pujaastawa (2002) at Udayana University in Bali elaborates as follows: ‘The Parahyangan aspect is an expression of human relations with the spiritual environment, simultaneously being a reflection of human being as a religious being....

This process would give birth to various forms of religious system, having the function of satisfying the spiritual need of mankind’. As for the Pawongan aspect, Pujaastawa continues by noting that it is: ‘an expression of human relationship with each other, reflecting at the same time human beings as social beings in reciprocal and harmonious interactions’. Finally, on the Palemahan aspect, he explains that: ‘it expresses human relations with their

natural environment. Arrogance shown by man in exploiting excessively natural resources without considering its preservation reflects a kind of less harmonious interaction of man with the natural environment. Such institutions really reflect ecological wisdom.’

The philosophy of Tri Hita Karana finds its inspiration in the ancient Holy Book of the Yayur Weda. However, it is more clearly defined in Chapter III, Verse 10 of the Bhagawad Gita which points to Prajapati (God), Praja (Humankind) and Kamadalu (Nature) as the important elements to achieve harmony.

Tri Hita Karana is rooted in its ancient time–tested lineage of providing a formula of universal values for humankind to achieve prosperity, peace and happiness through a harmonious and balanced interaction with its spiritual, social and natural worlds, comprising the totality of relationships with its surrounding. Each environment contains a variety of systems of knowledge, beliefs and practices which must be adhered to if one is to achieve such balance and harmony between and within these environments with humans in the center of this equilibrium. While Tri Hita Karana puts humans in the center of the equilibrium in their relations with the spiritual, natural and social worlds and as the cause of all balance and imbalance, they are governed by various strict cosmological and religious guidelines which direct them to act in propriety towards all their relations so as to maintain a ‘Sacred Balance’ of interconnection, reciprocity and harmony which fosters equality between humans and the other elements of the universe.

The above mentioned three relationships are interconnected within each other and between all the three worlds, rendering that all the dictums in one relationship must conform with each other and with the dictums in the other relationships. Thus, the ‘Sacred Balance’ of Tri Hita Karana teaches, that all human behavior towards all aspects of life - which practically

comes down to the relations to God, the fellow humans and their natural environment - must be balanced, harmonious, flexible, interconnected and reciprocal. All these characteristics are basically synonymous to restraint and conservation. For, if people act in a balanced way in harmony to the norms and traditions of their life style and natural environment, they are actually helping to perpetuate the conservation and sustenance of their way of life and of their surroundings. In this way the Balinese are therefore better able to preserve their culture, self-identity and self-determination when facing the many challenges of globalization.

While the three interlocking spiritual, social and natural worlds of the Balinese cosmology have secured harmony and balance over many generations, over the past decades a process of dynamic equilibrium has transformed the existing balance into a new harmony and balance in order to cope and adapt to the recent process of social change. Such dynamic equilibrium prevents disruptions and strives for a self-sustaining ‘Sacred Balance’ between the current social order and socio-cultural change. Such dynamic situation allows for interaction, interconnection and interdependence between the various elements of society, nurturing a multifaceted cultural diversity which encourages creativity and the formation of new norms and values. This process strengthens the local peoples’ self-determination and control over their bio-diversity and destiny, spiraling into a continuous self-reinforcing cycle of more innovative creativity, formation of newer norms and values in continuity with the past and the sustenance of their inherent life styles, heritage and identity.

Philosophy

In Depth Bhuwana Agung and Bhuwana Alit.

Desa Kala Patra

Bhuwana Agung represents the universe, while Bhuwana Alit is mankind itself. They are often referred to as macrocosmos and microcosmos. According to the Holy Book Bhradaranyaha Upanishad, the two are composed of the same elements, the panca maha butha.

If anything happens to the universe, humans will also suffer. Therefore, humans must take good care of this universe, so that it will in turn protect and provide for humankind. The two are interlocked in reciprocation, with each taking care of the other (Gobyah 2002).

Having its source in the Holy Book of Wrehaspati Tatwa, this philosophy is one of the most important in the Balinese gallery of philosophies on harmony and balance. It is basically a philosophy of adaptation, whereby the dictates of religion, and therefore all acts and behaviour of Hindu people, must be adjusted according to the appropriate place (desa), time (kala) and condition (patra). There is nothing rigid in Hindu teachings, as most phenomena can be adapted to avoid friction and create harmony and balance. As humankind should be prepared to face the changes of time, desa kala patra provides for such flexibility by adapting to new environments in the interest of safeguarding harmony and balance, which is the foundation for achieving jagadhitha or prosperity, peace and happiness for humankind (cf.

Wiana 1995).

To the Balinese, the universe is made of three layers, namely swah, the sphere of the Gods who have created humankind and to which humans will return upon completing a life of dharma or truth; bwah which is the domain of humankind where it will have the freedom to do deeds or karma and create the corresponding fruits or pala and bhur, the underworld where the demons reside and where humans will go if they fail to lead a life of dharma and accumulate the necessary fruits of good deeds. Bhur, bwah, swah reflect the balanced way by which humans live. Good deeds are rewarded, while bad ones are punished. Humans as the balancers decide their fate in this highly interlocking and reciprocating relationship.

The Balinese concept of balance, a mainstay of Hinduism, is rooted in the belief that there exists a certain cosmic order in the universe, encompassing two opposite forces and a third position which has to maintain - and if necessary restore - the equilibrium between the other two forces. The continuing quest for a balance among these opposites is manifest in all aspects of Balinese life, ranging from the basic philosophy of the relationship between humans and their God, their

Upeti, Shtiti, Pralina According to the Vedic Hindu scriptures, after the Supreme Being created the universe, the earth and humankind, he preserved these elements by ruling over them systematically and benevolently, providing for order and continuity, while at the same time dissolving the unnecessary. The powers of creation (upeti), preservation (shtiti) and dissolution (pralina) of Sang Hyang Widhi Wase or the Almighty God are attributes which keep the cosmos in balance through a continuous cycle of life and death, new and old, and damnation and redemption. Nothing is eternal, except eternity itself which is moksa or the liberation of atman, the soul, after a lifetime of imprisonment within the physical self to come into union with the Supreme Being (cf. Atmaja 1999).

Philosophy

Rwa Bhineda Rwa Bhineda refers to the concept of opposites, of the positive and negative, birth and death, abstract and concrete (cf. Ariwata 1992). On the one hand, these opposites result in disharmony, but at the same time they create a new harmony and the foundation for a new balance. For the Balinese Hindu, life is a continuous motion from disharmony to harmony, from old balances to new balances in the long journey to achieving the eternal state of harmony, which is oneness with the Supreme Being.

Desa Adat The Balinese traditional village is the physical manifestation of the concept of Tri Hita Karana. Founded in the 7th century by the great Hindu Priest Merkandaya, the traditional village is structured to consist of 3 parts; namely a set of three temples called the kahyangan tiga; its residents who fall under its jurisdiction and a geographical area which form its boundaries. Respectively, the temples coincide with the spiritual or parahyangan aspect of Tri Hita Karana, the dwellers with the social or pawongan aspect and the land area with the natural or palemahan aspect.

The kahyangan tiga is further divided into the three temples of puseh, desa and dalem respectively manifestations of the gods Brahma, Shiva and Wishnu representing the three balancing powers of the Supreme God which are creation, preservation and dissolution. The three parts of the traditional village interact through a set of rules called the awig-awig which has been descended from the ancient wali or founders of the village. Thus, the awig-awig provides direction to the rights and obligations of the dwellers, how the natural surrounding is to be treated and how the temples should be kept up. All of this reflect an interlocking balance of dependence between the three parts of a village (cf. Griadhi 1995).

through the performance of continuous sacrificial rituals (yadnye) in the form of religious ceremonies, offerings and prayers, as well as through carrying out good deeds in servitude to the Gods and the Supreme Being (Bhakti/ Ngayah). It is only through such acts, including placating the demons through sacrificial rites, called caru that the cosmic order can be prevented from degenerating into disorder or allowed to surrender to evil.

The strong Balinese belief in the world of opposites is inspired by their concept of polarity, rwa bhineda, which is less mutually exclusive than the Judeo-Christian tradition, but more inclusive of a third position. Indeed, Balinese polarity of contrasting forces is not exactly in full opposition to each other, with one eventually coming out as the winner. Rather, these opposites produce balance, usually with a third factor in the centre balancing the two. It is expressed in the Hindu view, that bad and good always coexist and that it is humankind’s duty through activities not only in life, but also in sacrificial offerings and deeds (yadnye) to maintain that balance to bring harmony, peace and prosperity. For as long as that balance is not achieved, jagadhita or happiness for humankind will not be forthcoming. As such, from the most complex and all-encompassing philosophy of Tri Hita Karana to the most simple and mundane daily act of harvesting the rice fields, harmony through balance is the ultimate Balinese guide to life.

In order to understand this unique aspect of Balinese culture, enabling the local people to maintain continued conservation of the island’s rich bio-cultural diversity at times of strong external forces, the study of similar important concepts of balance and harmony is relevant to the understanding of the strong conservation-oriented behavior of the Balinese, as indicated in the "In depth" box.

The aspect of harmony and balance in Balinese daily life is so pervasive, that even the signal drums found in every meeting place of a banjar (village association) is paired to signify a male drum (kulkul lanang) and a female drum (kulkul wadon). and create disharmony, this disharmony will introduce a new and possibly more dynamic harmony and balance which may better support the society to cope and to adapt to the changes of the time (cf. Surata 1999).

Any disturbance in the harmonious balance between the Balinese and their precious natural environment be it from harvesting rice and fruits by the local farmers for their livelihood or medicinal plants and herbs by the balian (traditional healers) for their clients and patients, or the excessive use of water and land resources for massive tourist development projects - only the restoration of the equilibrium in such situation through rituals, ceremonies and offerings can bring a new harmonious balance which safeguards the conservation of the Balinese cultural and natural heritage for many generations to come.
