Zoals ook aan de vernieuwde opmaak van het vorige nummer te zien is, is er wat betreft schoonheid op de Origin Redactie een nieuwe weg ingeslagen, die we met dit nummer graag willen doorzetten. Daarnaast blijven we uiteraard de vaste rubrieken behouden, zoals het succesnummer “Culinaire Chemie”, dit keer met professor Danhof, iemand die ongetwijfeld veel schoonheid ziet in het werk dat hij doet. Zo ook Christian Tudorache, die “Het Mysterie van de Paling” uit de doeken doet. Het faculteitsblad van Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen zou uiteraard ook niet voorbij gaan aan de wetenschappelijke definities van schoonheid die door de eeuwen heen geponeerd zijn: een interessante dialoog tussen de “Betavraagbaak” en “Infinite Beauty”. De vraag wat schoonheid nou precies is, of betekent, wordt dus op vele vlakken beantwoord. Ik zie het mooie er wel van in!
Sommige studenten werken in een bar, een winkel of verkopen abonnementen, anderen zetten zelf een onderneming op. Marinus Israel en Jaya Ramchandani vertellen hun verhaal.

Drie van de vier NWO-TOP subsidies voor Leiden
Antibiotica gezocht! Team Leiden naar finale Academische jaarprijs Team Leiden gaat door naar de finale van de Academische Jaarprijs. Het team wordt gecoördineerd door Prof. Gilles van Wezel (Leiden Institute of Chemistry) en Dr. Dennis Claessen (Institute Biology Leiden) in samenwerking met Dr. Willem van Wamel van Erasmus MC. Het team onderzoekt hoe ziekenhuisbacterien ontstaan en hoe de juiste antibiotia gevonden kunnen worden. Met de uitbraak van de EHEC-bacterie in het achterhoofd kan de speurtocht van Team Leiden het verschil gaan maken! De Academische Jaarprijs is bestemd voor de beste vertaling van wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar een breed publiek. Het team met het meest creatieve en overtuigende communicatieplan ontvangt de hoofdprijs van 100.000 euro om het ingediende plan te realiseren. Leiden Institute of Chemistry sleept vier NWO ECHO subsidies binnen Naast de 2 TOP grants heeft het LIC ook nog 4 ECHO’s binnengehaald voor dr. Francesco Buda, professor Gijs van der Marel met Jeroen Codée, dr. Dmitri Filippov en professor Gilles van Wezel. ECHO-subsidies zijn projectsubsidies van 260.000 euro, bedoeld voor Excellent CHemisch Onderzoek. Deze subsidies bieden de mogelijkheid om nieuwsgierigheidsgedreven onderzoek van hoge kwaliteit te kunnen uitvoeren. Zo kunnen creatieve risicovolle ideeën worden uitgewerkt, de kiemen worden gevormd voor de
NWO heeft landelijk vier TOP subsidies toegekend voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek, drie daarvan gingen naar Leiden. In totaal zijn er landelijk 24 voorstellen ingediend. Naast de gehonoreerde subsidie van professor Ad IJzerman zijn ook de voorstellen van professor Marc Koper met dr. Ludo Juurlink en professor Geert- Jan Kroes gehonoreerd. NWO TOP-subsidies zijn bedoeld voor gevestigde (bio-) chemische / chemisch-technologische top-onderzoeksgroepen met een bewezen track record. De subsidies bieden deze groepen de gelegenheid en vrijheid om excellente, uitdagende en innovatieve onderzoekslijnen te versterken en/ of uit te breiden. Bron: www.science.leidenuniv.nl
Klopjacht op kunstmatige bladeren en goedkope fotobiologische cellen Kunstmatige bladeren, goedkope fotobiologische cellen. Dat zijn producten waarop BioSolar Cells zich met € 42 miljoen subsidie vijf jaar gaat richten. In BioSolar Cells werken 34 partijen, waaronder de Universiteit Leiden, samen in een klopjacht op de duurzame productie van bio-energie en voedsel door middel van efficiënte(re) fotosynthese. De urgentie is hoog. De onderzoekers in het BioSolar Cells programma zetten in op het vergroten van de efficiëntie in planten en micro-organismen, artificiële systemen zoals kunstmatige bladeren, en op combinaties daarvan. Dat gebeurt zowel op het niveau van planten en cellen zoals algen en bacteriën, als op dat van moleculaire systemen. Daarmee leggen ze de basis voor goedkope fotobiologische cellen, zoals fotovoltaïsche cellen op basis van silicium, die in staat zijn in korte tijd veel biomassa te produceren of zelfs direct vloeibare brandstoffen zoals methanol. De Kamer van Koophandel heeft het onweerlegbaar vastgesteld: er komen steeds meer student-ondernemers. De vraag is waarom, wat drijft studenten om naast hun studie een eigen onderneming op te zetten? Origin gaat het gesprek aan met twee verschillende student-ondernemers, Marinus Israel uit Den Haag en Jaya Ramchandani uit Mumbai. Allereerst Marinus Israel, oprichter van Cillix en mede-oprechter van De Twee Cateraars. Cillix is een bedrijf dat ooit begonnen is als een bedrijf voor webhosting, zie voor meer informatie de website: www.cillix.nl, maar zich gaandeweg verbreed heeft.

Je was vrij jong toen je met Cillix, je eerste onderneming begon. Hoe kwam je op het idee?
Ja, ik was zestien en ik had een bijbaantje bij een hosting bedrijf dat een totale chaos was. Ik heb een tijdje geprobeerd de problemen daar op te lossen, maar op een bepaald moment dacht ik: dit kan ik zelf beter. Zo is het idee voor Cillix ontstaan.
Is het ondernemerschap goed te combineren met je studie?
Met mijn studie is het altijd vrij goed te combineren geweest. Soms ben je wat drukker met je studie, op andere momenten besteed je meer tijd aan het bedrijf. Daar moet je een goede balans in houden. Naast oprichter van Cillix ben ik ook medeoprichter van De Twee Cateraars. Dat bedrijf ben ik ongeveer 3,5 jaar geleden met Max Makurat gestart omdat we dachten dat er wel vraag was naar een professionelere, vriendelijkere en goedkopere catering op de universiteit. Het voordeel van ondernemen als je op de universiteit zit is dat je heel veel mensen kent. Je hebt dan een veel groter netwerk, waardoor je makkelijker aan klanten komt.
een klant die illegaal filmpjes op zijn site gezet had. De filmmaatschappij stelde ons aansprakelijk voor 1500 euro. Toen heb ik een rechtzaak tegen die klant aangespannen. Cillix werd in het gelijk gesteld, maar de advocatenkosten waren veel hoger dan die 1500 euro en het heeft veel tijd gekost. Met mijn huidige ervaring zou ik die rechtszaak waarschijnlijk niet zijn begonnen.
Ga je verder met je onderneming na je afstuderen? (lacht) Ik ben een maand geleden afgestudeerd en ga nu promoveren. Cillix wil ik er zeker wel bij blijven doen. De Twee Cateraars is vrij tijdsintensief, als we een (grote) borrel en lunch moeten cateren dan zijn we daar vaak twee volle dagen mee kwijt. Daarom zou ik graag het een en ander willen gaan delegeren binnen dat bedrijf. Zelf zou ik me dan alleen nog bezig willen houden met de offertes, inkooplijsten en het personeel.

Waren er tegenslagen gedurende het opstarten van een onderneming? Ik had al vrij snel een paar klanten die mijn vaste kosten dekten, dus niet echt. Het was wel lastig dat ik zo jong en onervaren was. Er was bijvoorbeeld een keer

Welke van je bedrijven is je favoriet? Als ik zou moeten kiezen, dan vind ik Cillix eigenlijk leuker. Het werk is wat intellectueler. Vanuit de oorspronkelijke dienst, webhosting, heeft het bedrijf zich breder ontwikkeld. Zo bedenken en maken we nu de complete online strategie voor een bedrijf; van concept tot website, vindbaarheid en eventueel webshop. Dat maakt het uitdagend. Bij de Twee Cateraars vond ik vooral het opzetten van het bedrijf leuk; het werk zelf is wat eentoniger.

Waar gaat je voorkeur naar uit: in je eentje een onderneming, of samen met iemand? Samen ondernemen is erg prettig. Je hebt altijd een klankbord als je samenwerkt en daarnaast heb je met z’n tweeën sowieso meer ideeën. Natuurlijk heeft samenwerking wel een keerzijde, het is eens voorgekomen dat een bedrijf waar ik medeoprichter van was (Sen media, red) daaraan ten onder is gegaan . Direct na mijn eindexamen was ik samen met een vriend van me begonnen aan het bouwen van een media-imperium. We bedachten verschillende sites, zoals een voor social media, een interactieve site over games en een over mobiele telefoons. In die samenwerking ontstond enige frictie. Uiteindelijk liep het bedrijf daarop stuk en ben ik toch maar gaan studeren. Daar heb ik nooit spijt van gehad; ik had het studentenleven inclusief vereniging (Marinus is lid bij Augustinus, red.) niet willen missen.

The following student is in total contrast with the owner of Cillix. Both entrepreneurs have total different, backgrounds, motives and objectives. Nonetheless, they have some things in common. In order to be an entrepreneur you will have to have a lot of the following ingredients: commitment, risk tolerance, networking, attention to detail and balance. An interesting question would be, what does it take to become a successful entrepreneur? Moreover, what does a successful entrepreneur look like? Well, like Bill Gates maybe, but watch out for this young lady!
You were quite young when you started with Sirius. How did you get the idea about starting up this company? After my graduation in Physics at the University of Mumbai, I knew I did not wanted to go into the field of research. Next, I also knew that I do not like to work under a authority. However, I could not make up my mind what to do. So, I started working in a company and after 4 years of experience of working in different companies I had the experience and confidence to start up my own company. However, I really like to be around people. So, I started up Sirius Interactive together with two of my friends with whom I worked together in the company where I began as a Scientific Editor. During this three year period at the company I learned besides editing of scientific papers also other competences among which are, human resource management, recruitment, accounting and more. Because I did not wanted to waste my time when I was starting up the company Sirius Interactive, my team and I decided to exploit the existing knowledge rather than to start from scratch and we hired a consultant for providing us with the knowledge which is needed for starting up this business.

I am really passionate about ‘’Spreading the word of Science’’. In more detail, we at Sirius Interactive, focus on making sure that articles from the continent of Asia and other non-western scientific papers will not be withdrawn from the public just because of the language issues. We want to connect Eastern values with the Western practise of Science.

Can you combine your company and study in a good manner? ‘’I never thought of it as a mountain’’, says Jaya about whether or not starting up a company is a burden particularly in combining this with a tough study like Astronomy. In Jaya’s perspective, studying disciplines like Astronomy and Physics enabled her to understand and communicate with scientists. Culinary chemistry with...
Professor Meindert Danhof After the announcement of professor Meindert Danhof winning the Research Achievement Award in Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics & Drug Metabolism 2010, we couldn’t let the opportunity pass interviewing the professor. However, we thought, not only is it interesting to talk about his work, but also to get to know him a little bit better. With this in mind, we decided to interview him for our ‘culinary chemistry’ section. And that’s how, on a very warm and beautiful spring day, we went on our way to ‘Koetjes en Kalfjes’ in the Breestraat in Leiden, where professor Danhof was waiting for Origin with a glass of cold beer. None of us had actually been to this restaurant, so we were all curious about the menu. As his guests, Origin was given the choice between a two or three-course menu. We all decided upon a two-course meal, with the professor opting for ‘Black angus entrecote’ with a side dish of French fries, while Origin chose the vegetarian ‘Pasta di chef!’ and ‘Salmon in a lemon sauce’. Mouth-watering at the sight of the desert menu, professor Danhof admits he has a sweet tooth. Then we dove into professor Danhof’s life as a student. In high school, professor Danhof had a passion for math, physics and chemistry. His father urged him in combining the three subjects into a study with good job perspectives. His choice fell on Pharmacy at the University of Groningen, from which he graduated cum laude. As a student, he did not have any wild escapades. Instead, he embraced his talent of playing the viola and joined the orchestra, where he met his wife.

Professor Danhof obtained his PhD from Leiden University under the direction of professor D.D. Breimer. After coming back from a trip to USA, professor D.D. Breimer arranged a post-doc position for him. This was done in the old fashion way; by writing a letter and checking it several times before posting it. This is how he started his postdoctoral research with professor G. Levy, in the department of Pharmaceutics, State University of New York in Buffalo. Many years later, he is not only professor but also the director of the LACDR. Therefore we asked him about the expansion of the LACDR. “The LACDR has grown very fast, thanks to the growing number of students. Our goal is to get the whole faculty in the new tower. The ‘UFO part’ will stay, since it’s very nice to see and I think it’s a monument for Leiden.” As we were waiting for the main course, our person of interest received a work-related phone call. He excused himself for a minute. The professor explained that he is on call for a certain project, so for him the workday does not end when he goes home. He enjoys his work so much, that he does not mind this at all.

Speaking of research, obtaining a PhD has its benefits. Still, many students have doubts about starting on a PhD. We asked him if he would recommend students to do a PhD. “It depends on what you want: If you are interested in a career in research, it’s necessary.” However, Origin comments that there are no big pharmaceutical companies in the Netherlands with a Research & Development (R&D) department. Professor Danhof explains this with the current trend. “Nowadays, you notice that big pharmaceutical companies buy knowledge from smaller companies. ‘To-BBB’, a company in the Bio Science Park, is a good example of this trend. The original ideas are thus formed in small companies and bought by big pharma, since they have the money to continue the ideas to a clinical trial and finally, into a product. So there are R&D departments, but mainly in the small companies.”

my thoughts.” He occasionally plays tennis as well and regularly goes to the gym to stay fit, but something he really enjoys is cooking! He likes to cook in the weekends, because during the weekdays he doesn’t have the time, so then his lovely wife cooks for the both of them.

The professor has an extensive cooking repertoire. As a pharmacist, he likes experimenting with ingredients from different jars and flasks and stirring in pots and pans. The many business trips take him all around the world and bring him in touch with different cuisines. He enjoys anything from American steaks to Japanese sushi. Every year in July he spends his vacation with his wife, son, daughter and their partners in France, where they have a summer residence. There in the big garden, they enjoy his home cooked meals at the dining table large enough to seat 16 people. Recently, he bought a caramel iron salamander and soufflé cups at a local French market so he could make his very own crème brûlée according to traditional French recipes.
After enjoying our desert, we concluded our interview with professor Danhof. Showing gratitude with a box of chocolates, we bid the professor goodbye. Armed with his bouquet of flowers and the chocolate, he headed home on his bicycle.
The final question burning on our lips was of course about the ‘Research Achievement Award’, the latest price of the professor. “It was a very nice time. I was granted the award in New Orleans. I was there with my wife and my two children joined us a few days later. It was a big congress with 10.000 people and the opening ceremony was just as with the Oscars; directors and cameras were present everywhere. A session was also arranged to present our views and start discussions, which was very nice. I actually had two independent nominations for this award, but to actually win it… It was such an honour. ’Schoonheid is…’ Ja, wat is schoonheid eigenlijk? Nastrevenswaardig als het is, de universele definitie van wat mooi nou precies mooi maakt, is nog niet gevonden. Waarom maakt de ene artiest er een potje van en de andere een Ming vaas? Hoe raakt Doutzen de gevoelige snaar die anderen missen? Filosofen, wiskundigen, biologen, psychologen; het is slechts een greep uit het assortiment experts dat zich al over die vragen heeft gebogen en er iets wijzer (maar waarschijnlijk niet mooier) van is geworden. We volgen drie van vele pogingen om iets algemeens over schoonheid vast te stellen. DOOR: Carlos de Lannoy
…een getal Studeer je geen wiskunde of filosofie? Dan kan het jaren geleden zijn geweest dat je de legendarische wetenschapper waarmee onze zoektocht naar schoonheid begint voor het laatst bent tegen gekomen: Pythagoras. Zoals veel van zijn collega’s in de oudheid, was Pythagoras een zwaargewicht op meer dan één wetenschappelijk gebied. Dat de ontdekking van een vakgebiedoverstijgend fenomeen als de gulden snede (zie het artikel “Infinite beauty” elders in dit nummer) aan hem wordt toegeschreven, is dan ook voorstelbaar. Helaas heeft hij zijn constante waarschijnlijk nooit in een andere dan de puur wiskundige rol gezien, want pas in 1509, toen Luca Pacioli zijn De divina proportione publiceerde, kreeg de verdeling zijn goddelijke bijsmaak en daarmee langzamerhand ook de status
van schoonheidsmaat. Vanaf dat moment werd de verhouding teruggevonden in klassieke architectonische meesterwerken, zoals het Parthenon in Athene en talloze kunstwerken, gemaakt door mensen die de zegen van de gulden snede niet eens zouden kennen![1] Een bewijs voor onze onderbewuste voorkeur voor deze verhouding wellicht? Ook in onze tijd is de gulden snede een populair onderwerp; de psycholoog Gustav Fechner leek in 1860 met een keuze-experiment te hebben aangetoond dat een rechthoek met goddelijke verhoudingen de “mooiste” was. Plastisch chirurg Stephen Marquardt, gespecialiseerd in gezichtsreconstructie na trauma, deed een eeuw later een ijverig onderzoek naar gezichtsproporties van mooie mensen en meende daarin op tientallen plaatsen de

gulden snede te herkennen. Zij die durven, kunnen zichzelf onderwerpen aan de theorie van Marquardt , door een gouden-ratio-masker van zijn website te downloaden en over een foto van hun gezicht te leggen.[2] Helaas is er meer dan genoeg reden voor scepsis. Om te beginnen bij de herkenning van de gulden snede in klassieke bouwwerken; in veel bewijzen voor de gouden ratio in het Parthenon wordt een deel van het bouwwerk op handige wijze niet meegenomen, zodat de berekening nagenoeg precies klopt. Daarnaast zorgt onenigheid over de oorspronkelijke afmetingen van het bouwwerk voor een grote hoeveelheid gegevens, die met creatief rekenwerk het bewijs levert voor élke ratio. Bovendien geeft het gebrek aan een kader van regels (waar moet de ratio precies zitten?) de welwillende zoeker genoeg kans om zichzelf te bedotten. [3] Dat op deze manier uit wel meer gebouwen een “verrassende” ratio te halen valt, bewees de bekende wiskundige Martin Gardner al in 1957, met een ludieke analyse van het Washington monument.[4] Ook bij het werk van Fechner worden vraagtekens geplaatst; geen enkele keer kon zijn keuze-experiment met succes herhaald worden. De voorkeur van proefpersonen voor de goddelijke rechthoek was mogelijk het resultaat van de volgorde waarin de rechthoeken werden aangeboden.[3] En heb je de schoonheidstest van Marquardt niet doorstaan? Puzzel dan gerust de stukjes van je zelfvertrouwen bij elkaar, want niet alle fotomodelgezichten passen het masker, terwijl het als gegoten zit
bij sommige esthetisch minderbedeelden.[2,5] Recentelijk onderzoek stelt voorzichtig vast dat de mooiste gezichtsverhoudingen aanmerkelijk minder mystiek van aard zijn dan Marquardt stelt: de ideale afstand tussen ogen en mond werd vastgesteld op ongeveer 36 procent van de gezichtslengte en de beste afstand tussen de ogen op 46 procent van de gezichtsbreedte.[6] Niemand heeft deze verhoudingen nog teruggevonden in het Parthenon, maar de aanhouder wint.
…symmetrie Nieuwe theorieën, nieuwe kansen; psycholoog Judith Langlois nam 16 tot 32 foto’s van gezichten en smolt ze samen tot nieuwe, waarna ze proefpersonen zowel compositiefoto’s als normale foto’s liet beoordelen. De samengestelde gezichten werden beoordeeld als mooier dan de onbewerkte, wat impliceert dat een gemiddeld gezicht mooier is.[7] Langlois zelf stelt dat de gemiddelde gezichten hoger scoren, omdat ze meer weg hebben van de mensen om ons heen en daardoor meer vertrouwen opwekken. Helaas doen fotomodellen niet aan gemiddeldheid. In tegendeel zelfs; de samengestelde gezichten verloren het in proeven nog steeds dik van geheel natuurlijke schoonheden. Gelukkig is ook een ander conclusie te verbinden aan de proef van Langlois; door het middelen van de gezichten werd ook asymmetrie weggenomen, en symmetrie is wél iets waar mooie gezichten hoog op scoren! [8] Het is bovendien niet enkel menselijk om je

’Schoonheid is…’ potentiële partner eerst op spiegelbaarheid te testen; dezelfde voorkeur is waargenomen bij minstens 42 andere diersoorten.[9] Wat Langlois ontdekte, was eigenlijk al lang bekend; fluctuerende asymmetrie, de asymmetrie die voortkomt uit ontwikkelingsfoutjes, staat bekend als een maat voor stabiele ontwikkeling.[10] Is het genoom in staat om de ontwikkeling van een kind in uitzonderlijk goede banen te leiden, dan is het product fitter, slimmer en symmetrischer – waarbij we in staat zijn die laatste eigenschap direct te zien en we de connectie met andere voordelen onbewust maken. Verschillende onderzoeken ondersteunen een verband tussen lichaamssymmetrie en IQ.[11] Waarom zo weinig supermodellen dan bijklussen als kerngeleerde is nog onbekend.
…imperfectie Is perfecte symmetrie dan het geheim van schoonheid? Niet helemaal. Symmetrie is van belang, maar de paradoxale finishing touch – in ieder geval voor menselijke schoonheid – is imperfectie! Jawel, het verschil tussen mooi en adembenemend is een spleetje tussen de tanden, een moedervlek op de wang, of wat de symmetrie ook maar kan verstoren. Een mogelijke verklaring wordt gegeven door Martin Lindstrom, die als goeroe van de reclame-industrie wel vaker iets over aantrekkelijkheid te zeggen heeft: “Niets is perfect en als het wél zo lijkt, zoeken we onbewust naar imperfecties. […] Studies tonen aan dat mensen zich het best identificeren met hen die onze zwakheden delen.”[12] Daarmee sluit hij enigszins aan op een concept dat al ruim een eeuw onder psychologen bekend is als unheimligkeit; iets dat bekend en vreemd tegelijk is, leidt tot afkeer. Wellicht is het perfect symmetrische gezicht zo bevreemdend voor ons, dat onze hersenen de voorkeur geven aan de makkelijker verwerkbare net-niet-perfectie.

Met Marilyn Monroe maakte de schoonheidsvlek, een van de weinige zichtbare “imperfecties” in haar gezicht, een come-back als schoonheidskenmerk.
Dus? De gouden ratio als elegante schoonheidsvoorwaarde lijkt niet bestand tegen wetenschappelijk geweld en, hoewel een hoge mate van symmetrie wenselijk is, kunnen we ook niet leven met een overmaat er-

van. Menselijke schoonheidskenmerken zijn mogelijk gewoon tekenen van gewilde genen die we onbewust herkennen. Bovenal lijkt schoonheid een ingewikkeld samenspel van algemene mechanismen die we nauwelijks begrijpen en persoonlijke voorkeuren die ontspruiten uit onze individuele hersenkronkels. Onze beperkte kennis is hooguit goed voor een paar praktische tips: vergeet de gouden ratio, meet het gezicht van je potentiële partner eens op en wees trots op je fietsenrek.

al gebiologeerd met de blokkendoos bezig kon zijn. Wellicht denkt ze ook terug aan de vertederende aanblik van het kind dat zo druk en enthousiast bezig was. Zo gek is de vergelijking nog niet eens. Net als dat kleine kind probeer je door te puzzelen en verschillende mogelijkheden te proberen de oplossing te vinden voor een ogenschijnlijk groot probleem.

Het enige verschil is het niveau van het probleem. Waar het kleine kind zijn uiterste best doet om te ontdekken welk blokje er nu toch door het uitgesneden vierkant past, breekt de Leidse wetenschapper zijn hoofd over het ontwerp van een nieuw medicijn dat op een receptor moet passen. De passie en het enthousiasme waarmee het probleem aangepakt wordt moeten bijna wel vergelijkbaar zijn.
Hoe goed het ook uitgelegd wordt, voor oma gaat het allemaal veel te ver. Ze gaat het pas begrijpen als het resultaat ter sprake komt. De voldoening die het geeft als je het probleem opgelost hebt is namelijk ook door haar te begrijpen: in sommige gevallen ben je als een kind zo blij.

Infinite Beauty I’ve got it! One equation that explains all beauty! The finest beauty is beauty that overwhelms. One formula explaining all that overwhelms all… And I found it! In this article I will reveal to you the secret of beauty, in all of its aspects.

Power Why all this fascination for all-explaining theories? Explanatory power makes it possible to control a situation, and control is power. Even loosing control gives us a feeling of power because we are the ones to decide to give control away to the unknown. The more we know about a system, the more we can control it, right? Just take a look at the weather, which we can hardly control. It’s proportional to the explanatory power of the average weather forecast. Complementary to my own grandmothers’ recipe of iron cakes, a local delicacy in the famous city of Vlaardingen, it carefully describes us how to make it. I know by experience that it will result in delicious iron cakes.
The Golden Ratio Coming back to the all-explaining equation, I must admit something; it wasn’t exactly me who discovered it. It was probably Pythagoras who worked on it first and it was Euclid who first explicitly wrote about it around 300 BC: “A straight line is said to have been cut in extreme and mean ratio when, as the whole line is to the greater segment, so is the greater to the lesser.” 1 We take a line and divide it into 2 parts. If the ratio of the separate fragments is the same as the ratio of the complete line as opposed to the biggest fragment, we will see that this ratio equals 1,618034. This irrational

number is φ, phi, and the proportion it describes is known as ‘the golden ratio’ (box 1).
Iron Cakes This mysterious number caught attention of painters, biological researchers and architects and was often used in their work, both intentionally and unintentionally. Throughout history, people from different disciplines were grasped by the divine ratio, used it in their art works and looked for it everywhere in nature. Iron cakes might accompany this sequence. Iron cakes are not made from iron, but are baked on a specific iron plate. This plate has a pattern of rhombuses on it. When the ratio of the diagonals of the rhombus on an iron cake baking plate is equal to ϕ, that rhombus is called a golden rhombus. These golden rhombuses can also be found in arrangements of molecules2 . When a golden ratio is found somewhere, one could assume that an object is self-similar. Self-similarity occurs when a subject at a smaller scale looks like itself, as it is the case for the line described in box 1, an arrangement of golden rhombuses on a baking plate or a crystalline arrangement in a molecular structure.

This ratio is thought to be important in defining some properties of beauty. This self-similarity can be found everywhere: in fractals, molecules, and also in pyramids. Interestingly enough, the golden ratio is also found all sorts of organisms in nature. Especially people who work on phyllotaxis, the study of leaf arrangements, come into contact with this ratio very often. The number of petals for example, is often a Fibonacci number. And the Fibonacci numbers are related to the golden ratio, as explained in box 2. It is thought that both people and bees are attracted by flowers because of the Fibonacci numbers that occur in the arrangement of flower leaves and petals. Architects and painters use because they believe it is a number of “divine proportions” and believe that it describes some kind of ideal ratio.
Self-Similarity If there is one thing that supports the interesting theory opposed by R. L. Oldershaw, convinced of the significance of his finding, it is the golden ratio. He proposes a Self-Similar Cosmological Paradigm that proposes that nature is ordered in a transfinite, which is not infinite, but more than finite, hierarchy of discrete cosmological scales. 3-4
Change your face Gunes and Piccardi 5 found that the golden ratio is a good descriptor of the way in which facial features should relate to each other to nominate a face as attractive. They programmed a computer in such a way that the program could assess facial beauty with the use of rules of proportion based on the golden ratio.

Which means that the more n reaches infinity, the more the ratio between the subsequent Fibonacci numbers reaches φ.
They tested the consistency of the computed results by comparing them with the opinion of human referees. The predictions were especially valuable when applied to forecast the perceived beauty of vertical proportions of facial features. With this knowledge in mind the possibility is created to ask your plastic surgeon to move your facial features to the right places. But what’s really so golden about this ratio? It might not explain all beauty. And we might have to take the all-explaining feature of it with a pinch of salt (Also see the article “Schoonheid is…” by Carlos de Lannoy). Finding the golden ratio in nature might be like gold; there is enough of it to trade or say something about it, but not that much that the gold becomes invaluable or that the ratio becomes unimportant. Scientific theories might explain some of it but cannot grasp the complete picture. Like beauty; a concept is taken and made unspeakable, like the unspeakable length of the infinite or transfinite number of decimals of φ.

Beauty in Science
At secondary school, an experiment of the Chemical Garden is shown to the students. The Chemical Garden is based on an astonishing phenomenon: adding crystalized coppersulfate, cobaltchloride and nickelnitrate in a reaction tube with sodiumsilicate results in the formation of all kinds of elongated plant-like multi-coloured structures. Coppersulfate will make blue bushes, cobaltchloride will form purple blue plants and nickelnitrate will develop into a structure referring to green seaweed. In short, this reaction of compounds results in a colourful spectacle and the arise of a miniature garden: a tiny gnome would not be unsuitable! This remains a funny experiment to comfort young students in the chemical kitchen, whilst being scientific and performing magnificent results at the same time, of which beautiful images can be taken.

Interestingly, the anatomical theatre of Leiden was built after the late medieval ages. The medieval ages are not acknowledged for their physical care and beauty. Fascinatingly, “Perfect beauty was in the old days just as unreachable as it is nowadays” as is phrased by Karine van ‘t Land, who is a junior scientist studying the history of medieval medicine. Therefore, the anatomy of the human body was drawn in an idealistic manner without any imperfections and according to the principles of beauty during that frame of time. Nowadays, we will look at these drawings as if they are not realistic and not true-to-nature at all, comparing this to the present day available knowledge and information. However, how can we judge objectively in this point of time if these late medieval age images were not realistic?

Thus, we recognise our own reality in the observation of the environment, and this is in essence the phenomenon called ‘art’. Moreover, this implies that modern day images exhibited anywhere to a public are essentially art as all the observers create their own reality when trying to interpret the illustration. However, these ten images cannot be observed in full and show only a piece of the complete item. Therefore these items could become even more like art and create their own reality, which often calls for emotions and a feeling of beauty in the observer. The exquisiteness of these images is in harmony with science as science is a reconnoitring expedition towards novel knowledge of the reality on the basis of affirming facts. To address this issue, it is fair to assume that art and science synchronise by the fact that both disciplines converge towards recreating reality, yet each from a different angle. The ten items are part of the new exhibition of Museum Booijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, for which scientists in Natural Sciences were asked to deliver sci-

Today, we look towards old illustrations as pieces of art. We are presenting these illustrations to observers through exhibitions and they serve in the first place to amaze and interest the observer. In the meantime, the observer is trying to see through the meaning and the reality of the image. The question is whether these observers are trying to understand the content reality of

entific images with exceptional beauty. The submitted images differentiated from chemical crystals to astronomical clouds of gasses of different elements that are depicted as richly coloured dust. Further, images were included which showed a close up of microorganisms or three-dimensional pictures of a time shot of the foetal development of a human baby. From this material it is clear that there are a lot of scientists that have an open eye for art and beauty in their experiments. But beware of the same hazard as that of performing the experiment with the Chemical Garden: you can view it only with one pair of glasses at the same time. If you look at the beauty in science, you may quickly forget the scientific value and lose yourself in the desirability of beauty. Images that are strongly zoomed in on the shell of a virus are so delightful and dynamic in such an extent that anybody would forget about the fatally of these phenomena and about the problematic lack of scientific knowledge regarding this phenomena in order to prevent and cure serious viral illnesses. Therefore, it remains controversial how compatible science and beauty actually are. Like the Dutch proverb “There is no arguing about taste” suspects, beauty is really subjective. To substantiate this, a few definitions can be depicted, starting
with old authorities like the old Greeks. For instance, Plato has not a roseate idea about art. As the Cave of Plato concerns, everything we are as well as the nature is slightly a reflection of the ideal. In this perspective, art is a counterfeit of a counterfeit. Heraclitus of Efeze defines beauty nevertheless as a “Tangible expression of the truth”. Kant, during The Enlightenment postulates that beauty disintegrates in the characteristics of the work of art and the impressions of the observing person. Current perspectives of beauty are more about the power of attraction, attractiveness to a person or an object by their appearance, whereupon a second place is left for the content.

Illustrations The illustrations in the museum are good representatives of the latter point of view: at first glance the appearance of the images catches the eye. Whereupon the observer turns to the brochure, he is aware of the content and this will create awareness of what he is actually looking at. To address this, the black-white portrait, entitled Betulaceae is a nice example. A regular and at the same time irregular pattern of white and black ellipses catch the eye. It looks like an abstract painting that can be placed in a modern style lodging.

more and more familiar with the identity behind this beautiful portrait of the bacteria Nocordia Astroides, we will notice that this is a bacterium, which can lead to pneumonia in immunocompromised patients. This portrait was created along with other images during an investigation in which different settings of culture conditions and microscopy techniques were used, gathering crucial information. In short, this exhibition aims at putting complex and serious images from a variety of disciplines of science in a different perspective for both uninitiated observers as scientists.
The compatibleness of Art and Science As it is stated, it is possible to look with two glasses to such a masterpiece: with a pair of glasses with an artistic filter and a pair of glasses with a scientific filter. According to Kant, the characteristics of the work remain the same, but the impressions of the observer change. This is supported by museum Boerhaave, which states the following: “Science is a scouting expedition, by means of affirming facts, to novel truths of the reality”. Art creates its own reality and therefore calls for emotions and a feeling of exquisiteness in the observer. A few minutes later the foldout explains that we are actually looking at a microscopic view of the Black Awl (Dutch: Zwarte Els). This is a tree and one of the most common members of the Birch family. The Black Awl has a great variety of applications. Since it is well resistant against rotting, it is used as a material for assembling the pillars under the Rialto in Venice and for a lot of buildings in Amsterdam. The same kind of twofold can be found in the images of the algae, which also decorate the cover of the exposition and brochure. It are beautiful green structures on a black background, available in different shapes and almost completely symmetrical. The light blue flow results in an almost magical colour reproduction. If we zoom out, however, we observe an organism that is currently used as a promising source for CO2 storage as well as for biofuel applications. A last example is the portrait of Nocordia Astroides. This portrait shows a nice red, white and orange coloured structure with spine-like bulges, surrounded by layer like structures. A grey-like square plateau seems to have formed at the top. The variety in symmetry, colour and shape will mark this portrait into an attractive view. Whilst we get

This in itself is a remarkable thesis that science and art are diametrically opposed to each other. It is argued that art and science describe a different reality; that one can never contain the other. It is stated that they simply operate in parallel, without boundaries and overlaps. However, we believe that there is an overlap between art and science; there is beauty to be found in science without the science off the mind. Think of it: millions of researchers go to work every day, passionate about a job that can both be very positive or very negative. Have you ever had the feeling of getting one negative result after the other? Ever had the feeling of stopping an experiment and going home? Still, there’s always light at the end of the tunnel, a long-lasting positive result that could be the answer to many, many questions. This difficult quest of science is joined by so many people, driven by emotion, and with passion for their work. They experience beauty in science.

Luminol: Feiten en Fictie Na de verdwijning van een 12-jarig meisje is een buurtonderzoek gestart.

Luminol wordt in meerdere stappen gesynthetiseerd. De eerste stap is 3-nitroftaalzuur te laten reageren met hydrazine. Deze stap vindt plaats in een oplossing van verwarmd triethylenglycol. Na afsplitsing van water dient de primaire aminegroep van het reactieproduct gereduceerd te worden met natriumdithioniet.[3]
die in een klein huisje aan de rand van het stadje woont. De rechercheurs besluiten om op onderzoek uit te gaan. Ze treffen het huisje verlaten aan. De penetrante geur van schoonmaakmiddelen dringt hun neusgaten binnen en ze besluiten de forensische dienst te bellen. Als deze eenmaal ter plekke zijn, sprayen ze luminol op de vloer en muren.
Reactie
Een spetterpatroon licht op...
Om bloed op te sporen wordt luminol gemengd met hydroxide en waterstofperoxide. De hydroxide maakt dat de twee secundaire stikstofgroepen van luminol ioniseren. Deze geĂŻoniseerde vorm reageert met de zuurstof (afgestaan door de waterstofperoxide) tot een instabiele peroxide in aangeslagen toestand. Als deze peroxide terugvalt naar de grondtoestand komt het karakteristieke blauwe licht vrij. Zonder verdere toevoegingen lopen deze reacties vrij langzaam. Ijzergroepen, zoals die in hemoglobine, catalyseren deze reactie.[4]

Het had uit iedere willekeurige politieserie geknipt kunnen zijn: series die scenes vertonen waarin luminol wordt gebruikt om bloedresten op te sporen. De wetenschappelijke achtergrond voor het forensisch gebruik van deze stof zal in dit artikel verder uitgediept worden.
Nadelen Geschiedenis Oorspronkelijk werd luminol gebruikt in de Duitse mijnindustrie om nieuwe koperaders op te sporen, maar in 1937 kwam de wetenschapper Walter Specht erachter dat het ook gebruikt kon worden om eeen indicatie te geven of er ergens restanten bloed aanwezig waren.[1] Nadat luminol de mogelijke aanwezigheid van bloed heeft aangetoond, worden tegenwoordig geavanceerdere forensische tests uitgevoerd, ondermeer DNA analyse van het bloed. Een aantal chemische reacties, zoals die van luminol met bepaalde bestanddelen uit bloed, leveren (zichtbaar) licht als reactieproduct. Dit verschijnsel wordt chemoluminescentie genoemd. Ook andere stoffen vertonen chemoluminescentie, zoals luciferine (zorgt voor het oplichten van vuurvliegjes) en 1,2-dioxethaandion (de welbekende glowsticks).[2]

Jammer genoeg is luminol geen definitief bewijs voor de aanwezigheid van bloed. Naast bloed zijn er namelijk ook verschillende andere ijzerhoudende stoffen, zoals bepaalde typen verf, die een catalyserende werking hebben op bovengenoemde reactie. Daarnaast licht het ook op met urineresten of bepaalde typen schoonmaakmiddelen.

Luminol is in staat om zichtbaar op te lichten bij het minste spoortje van bloed. Daarom heeft Origin een experiment uitgevoerd met bloed en verschillende schoonmaakmiddelen, in een poging bloed definitief te verwijderen.
De resultaten bij 0 en 1 zijn zoals verwacht. Bij de glaasjes 2-5 zou chemoluminescentie moeten optreden, maar dit was niet het geval. Mogelijke verklaringen hiervoor zouden het oppervlakte type van de objectglaasjes kunnen zijn of het feit dat de luminol al enige tijd gemengd was met de waterstofperoxide toen er foto’s van de objectglaasjes 2 tot en met 5 gemaakt werden.
Materiaal en methoden - - - -
6 objectglaasjes menselijk bloed luminol oplossing ( 2g luminol, 250 mL water, 15g kaliumhydroxide)[5] 3% waterstofperoxide oplossing
Er is op 5 van de 6 objectglaasjes een druppel bloed aangebracht. Deze hebben aan de lucht gedroogd. Daarna is één objectglaasje schoongemaakt met bleek, één met biotex (een enzymoplossing), één met afwasmiddel en één met schuurmiddel. De waterstofperoxideoplossing en de luminoloplossing zijn gemengd en op alle glaasjes aangebracht.

Al met al is luminol een nuttig, maar beperkt hulpmiddel in forensisch onderzoek. Alhoewel het door met name Amerikaanse politieseries méér tot de verbeelding is gaan spreken dan wellicht terecht is.

De Europese paling is een uiterst mysterieuze vis: als glasaaltjes doemen ze op aan de Europese kust en leven dan jaren in onze zoete wateren om op een maanloze nacht in de herfst te vertrekken naar een onbekende plek diep in de oceaan om te paaien en vervolgens te sterven. Het mysterie van de paling Lang was het gissen waar de palingen vandaan kwamen. Aristoteles veronderstelde nog dat palingen via spontane generatie uit modder ontstonden. Diverse grote geesten, zoals Antoni van Leeuwenhoek en Sigmund Freud, hebben zich daarna gebogen over het onopgeloste mysterie van de voortplantingscyclus van de paling. In 1923 was het de Deense zooloog Johannes Schmidt die een tip van de sluier kon oplichten door jarenlang de Atlantisch oceaan af te varen en zoĂśplanktonmonsters te nemen. De kleinste palinglarven vond hij in de zuidwestelijke Sargasso-zee en kwam tot de conclusie dat de paaiplekken zich daar moesten bevinden. Dit betekent dat de geslachtsrijpe dieren , de schieralen, zonder te eten moeten migreren over een afstand van 6000 km, gedeeltelijk over de bodem van de oceaan op dieptes van 2000 m. Zwangere vrouwtjes of eieren zijn er echter nog steeds nooit gevonden.

De onwaarschijnlijk lange en moeilijke migratieroute, met ongekende gevaren en predatoren, lijkt geen logische strategie voor een evolutionair zo succesvolle diersoort. Palingen bestaan in de tegenwoordige vorm echter al meer dan 40 miljoen jaar. Destijds was het supercontinent Gondwana aan het opsplitsen en de continentale platen lagen nog vrij dicht bij elkaar rond de Atlantische oceaan. De Sargasso-zee lag er midden in op nog geen 2000 km van de Europese kust. Het langzaam maar gestaag scheiden der platen heeft er voor gezorgd dat dit “levende fossiel� steeds verder moest gaan zwemmen om dezelfde paaigronden te bereiken. De evolutionair succesvolle paling wordt nu echter met uitsterven bedreigd. In de afgelopen 30 jaar zijn de aantallen met meer dan 90% afgenomen zonder dat we de precieze oorzaken kennen. Een combinatie van oorzaken is mogelijk, zoals overbevissing, milieu-

vervuiling en migratiebelemmeringen zoals dammen, dijken en gemalen. In het kader van het Europeese aalplan wordt er nu in Nederland beperkt gevist tijdens de migratieperiode in de herfst, maar of dat voldoende is voor een verbetering van de aalstand is nog de vraag. Het kweken van paling in gevangenschap zou betere mogelijkheden kunnen bieden voor de consumptievraag en het herstel van de natuurlijke populaties. Dit wordt echter belemmerd door het gebrek aan kennis over de fysiologie van het zwemgedrag en de ecologische omstandigheden van hun voortplanting. Enkele jaren terug is het Leidse onderzoekers gelukt om hormoonbehandelde dieren tot voortplanting in gevangenschap te brengen, maar de palinglarven waren nog niet lang in leven te houden. Meer kennis is noodzakelijk over de natuurlijke migratie en reproductie en dit zou kunnen komen door de dieren via zenders op weg naar de Sargasso-zee te volgen. Eerdere pogingen de palingen op hun reis naar de paaigronden te volgen met satellietenzenders bleven echter zonder succes. Deze zenders waren groot
en zwaar en zorgden voor opwaartse druk door het noodzakelijke drijfvermogen van de zenders, die na een vooraf geprogrammeerde tijd los moesten laten om aan het wateroppervlak de data naar een satelliet door te sturen. De zenders verstoorden zo waarschijnlijk de cruciale efficiëntie van de “anguilliforme” – palingachtige – zwembeweging, de beweging van het hele lichaam in plaats van alleen met de staart. De komende drie jaar wordt er bij het Instituut Biologie Leiden (IBL) nieuw fysiologisch onderzoek gedaan naar het zwemgedrag van migrerende palingen. Het door NWO gefinancierde project, middels de VENIbeurs aan dr. Christian Tudorache, heeft twee hoofddoelen: ten eerste moet het geheim achter de extreem hoge zwemefficiëntie worden opgelost en ten tweede moet er een optimale zender worden ontwikkeld die het zwemgedrag en de energieverbruik van de vrij zwemmende palingen niet te veel belemmert. Samen met andere onderzoekscentra, zoals het Leidse LION, worden geavanceerde technieken ingezet zoals LaserDoppler en High-Speed cinematografie. Met behulp

van zuurstofmetingen en filmopnames in zwemtunnels kan het energieverbruik van zwemmende dieren worden bepaald. De verkregen inzicht en technologische vooruitgang die het IBL-onderzoek moet opleveren zou een cruciale stap kunnen zijn op weg naar de noodzakelijke kennis voor het kweken van palingen in gevangenschap en het beschermen van de soort in het wild. Mogelijk vinden we dan binnenkort echt het antwoord op Aristoteles’ vraag die al zo veel generaties wetenschappers bezig heeft gehouden.

Laser-Doppler of Particle image velocimetry is een geavanceerde techniek voor het zichtbaar maken van kleine waterstromingen. Hierbij worden kleine deeltjes opgelost die de waterstromingen moeten volgen. Vervolgens worden de deeltje met laserstralen bestraalt. De weerkaatsing van de laserstralen geven de bewegingsrichting en -snelheid van de deeltje aan en dus van de waterstromingen. Deze methode wordt vaak gebruikt om de biomechanica van zwemmende vissen te onderzoeken. High-speed Cinematography wordt ook vaak voor biomechanica onderzoek van vissen gebruikt. Hierbij worden met een speciale camera 200 tot 500 beelden per seconde geschoten om zeer snelle bewegingen van vissen te volgen. Deze snelle bewegingsaflopen, bij voorbeeld fast-starts, kunnen maar 200 milliseconden duren en zijn met het blote oog of conventionele camera’s niet waar te nemen.
